Day 2 of MP 689

"Validation of gyrokinetic transport models across the ITG/TEM
boundary in L-mode and I-mode plasmas"

A. E. White, N. T. Howard, M. L. Reinke, M. Greenwald, et al.

The motivation for this experiment today is to study changes in core turbulence and transport across the ITG/TEM boundary in RF heated plasmas. We wish to investigate how well turbulent-transport models can match simultaneously impurity particle transport and heat transport in ITG and TEM dominant plasmas. This is the second day of a dedicated JRT validation experiment, and today we will be gathering key fluctuation/transport data that we did not obtain on day1 -- LBO, CECE, and fast TCI. PCI is not available due to a shutter problem, so it is important to gather matched turbulence data with Fast TCI.

The goal of the experiment today is to repeat as closely as possible several key discharges from 1120221, which we are currently using to validate gyrokinetic models of transport.

The main part of the shot plan today will consist of an RF power scan, followed by a density scan, so that we can cross the ITG/TEM boundary with peaked rotation profiles (1120221012/1120221014) and also we can probe changes in rotation from peaked to hollow profiles as density is scanned (1120221011, 1120221012). We will also be attempting to fill in an intermediate power step (1120221016) with LBO data as well.

The shot by shot run plan is below.

One special request is for Contingency step 6 b): For physop plan, have 3.0 psi Ne put into H-bottom plenum, disabled for shot 001.

Other than that, we wish to have standard set-up as on day 1120221.

Cryo - yes
GPC- yes
TS - yes
HIREX (set for LBO data) - yes
Beam - NO
NINJA - NO
All fluctuation diagnostics.

Run Plan for Day 2 of MP 689:

Step 0

Clean up shots, post-boronization, low to high power RF (5-6 shots)

First shot of day, load up shot 12 from 2/21 (USN, 1 MW), check things out.

Second shot of day, plan to load shot 1120621010 (LSN, test H-mode, EDA-ish).

Step 1

Locked mode calibration shot. Load entire locked mode shot (1120705005 or 006 from Thursday) for this.

Step 2

Load shot 1120221012. This will be a repeat of low power (~1 MW, 0.8MA, BT = 5.4) ITG base case L-mode.
Need to match RF power and density as closely as possible to reference shot.
Repeat 1120221012, with 3-4 good LBO pulses. Compare actual parameters to target
parameters, if agreement to within 5% then move to next step. (2-3 shots)

Step 3

Load shot 1120221014. This will be a repeat of high power (~3.5 MW, 0.8MA, BT = 5.4) TEM base case L-mode. Need to match RF power and density as closely as possible.
Repeat 1120221014, with 3-4 good LBO pulses. Compare actual parameters to target
parameters, if agreement to within 5% then move to next step. (2-3 shots)

Step 4

Load shot 1120221011. This will be a repeat of low power (~1 MW, 0.8MA, BT = 5.4) ITG base case L-mode, BUT at higher density to see hollowing of rotation profile. Need to match RF power and density as closely as possible.
Repeat 1120221011, with 3-4 good LBO pulses. Compare actual parameters to target
parameters, if agreement to within 5% then move to next step. (2-3 shots)

Step 5

Load shot 1120221016. This will be a repeat of intermediate power (~2.5 MW, 0.8MA, BT = 5.4) ITG base case L-mode for RF scan LBO data. Need to match RF power and density as closely as possible.
Repeat 1120221016, with 3-4 good LBO pulses. Compare actual parameters to target
parameters, if agreement to within 5% then move to next step. (2-3 shots)

Total = 18 good shots

Contingency:

If we make it through the primary run plan (above), then we move to one (or two?) of these three contingency options. These all support JRT 2012, support papers by Reinke, Howard, Sung, and support an APS invited talk by White.

Step 6

a) CECE data scan

If CECE is getting good data near r/a = 0.7-0.8 region of plasma, then repeat shot like 1120221011, but raise the current to move the q = 3/2 surface (rotation reversal location further out in radius. This way, CECE may measure turbulence changes closer to the rotation reversal. (1-2 shots)

If CECE is not getting good data near r/a = 0.7-0.8, then do Bt scan and repeat shot pair like 11/12 and then like 12/14, to get CECE data. (4-6 shots)

b) Zeff scan

In 1 MW, peaked rotation L-mode plasmas, increases collisionality via Zeff to try and induce transition to hollow/flat rotation profile. (assume ICRF power from 0.5-1.5 seconds as per 2/21 target)

1) scan Zeff dynamically during ICRF pulse (1-3 shots)
a) enable H-BOT from 0.8-0.9 seconds at 40 V, 1.05-1.10 at 40 V and 1.2-1.25 at 40 V.
b) if rotation profile change is observed, move to (2) else repeat (1) increasing the voltage, puff lengths until radiation is saturated.

2) keep Zeff ~ constant at just below and just above demonstrated (2-3 shots)
a) Using levels from (1) set initial 100 ms puff voltage to have Zeff just below threshold
b) Using levels from (1) set initial 100 ms puff voltage to have Zeff just above threshold

c) I-mode LBO data

Depending on how well other steps progress, we might wish to make some I-mode plasmas and inject LBO. Use high power targets from 1120221 or raise current and density on good targets from today (4-5 shots)

The motivation for this experiment today is to study changes in core turbulence and transport across the ITG/TEM boundary in RF heated plasmas. This is the second day of a dedicated JRT validation experiment, and today we will be gathering key fluctuation/transport data that we did not obtain on day1 -- LBO, CECE, and fast TCI.

The goal of the experiment today is to repeat as closely as possible several key discharges from 1120221, which we are currently using to validate gyrokinetic models of transport.

The main part of the shot plan today will consist of an RF power scan, followed by a density scan, so that we can cross the ITG/TEM boundary with peaked rotation profiles and also we can probe changes in rotation from peaked to hollow profiles as density is scanned. We will also be attempting to fill in an intermediate power step with LBO data as well.

We were able to complete the 5 step physics run plan, and also complete part of the contingency plan. Data were obtained with LBO, CECE, reflectometer and FTCI in discharges that were matched extremely well (ne, Te, rot, WMHD, neuts, etc?) to the target discharges from 1120221 run day. For the high power cases, which we ran later in the day, we did have to request 1 MW more RF than the target shot, as H/D was high today.

Step 2/3: Repeat ITG and TEM cases, but with LBO and all fluctuation diagnostics

These were successful.
Low power ITG case with LBO data: 1120706008
High power TEM case with LBO data: 1120706029/30

We also had an attempt at a Highest power point, n seeded: 1120706033 (attempt)

Step 4: Rotation profile changes/hollowing

These were successful.
Low power ITG case with higher density for rotation hollowing:
1120706015, 16, 17, 18 ?? these shots have density scans and show evidence of ??hollowing?? rotation as density is increased from nl04= 0.60-0.85

Step 5: Intermediate 2.5 MW power case for LBO: success. 1120706021

Contingency 6 a): slight Bt scan for CECE

High power TEM case with LBO + CECE Bt scan: 1120706031
Low power ITG case with LBO + CECE Bt scan: 1120706004

Thank you again!

MP689 - Validation of gyrokinetic transport models across the ITG/TEM
boundary in L-mode and I-mode plasmas

Session leader: A. White
Physics operator: R. Granetz

We had good I-mode and L-mode plasmas today, with good ICRF performance up
to 4 MW, although there were a lot of fizzles too. The goal was to match
the Te, ne, and Vtor of discharges on 1120221, which involved running
several different densities and RF powers, in upper null with the cryopump.
Last night we had a boronization which lasted only about an hour due to a
diborane leak problem, and as a result, the H-fraction rose during the day,
eventually reaching 15%

There were some data acquisition problems early in the run due to a disk
space problem. On shot 20 the EF1 switches didn't close, resulting in the
only dud.

Scorecard: 22 plasmas
            1 dud (power supply issue)
9 fizzles (2 due to cryopump issues)
            0 power supply tests
            1 no-power MDSplus cycle test
            0 no-power gas test
           --------------
   Total: 33 shot cycles
