| Run Summary for 1120711
MP#706 - Fluctuation-induced heat and particle transport in the boundary plasma -- connection to critical gradient behavior and heat flux width scaling The principal goal of this run was to collect profile data over a range of plasma conditions from the Mirror Langmuir Probe (MLP) drive system connected to the A-port scanning probe. This system has the unique capability of making simultaneous measurements of electron temperature, floating potential and ion saturation currents at each location of the four electrodes in a scanning probe (12 data signals total), all at ~1 MHz. From these data, fluctuation-induced heat and particle transport can in principle be computed - hence the title of the MP. This was a productive run, achieving much of the experimental plan. The effort began during yesterday's run, where the ASP, FSP and A-WASP probe systems were operated to support MP662 and to condition the ASP probe head for the mirror probe drive system. This ASP was successfully conditioned yesterday, although perhaps a bit too aggressively. Post-run inspection of the ASP probe head indicated some melt damage on the electron-drift side of the moly probe head, indicating that slide-away plasmas take their toll on scanning probes. Still, the ASP head performed well. The FSP also operated very well. Unfortunately, the A-WASP got damaged during yesterday's run (hit by the familiar power supply cross-over lurch which cases the inner gap to go to zero), and was not available for use today (electrodes shorted to ground or to each other). Just prior to the run, the MLP system was connected to the A-port scanning probe, with a standard Mach-probe head installed. The drive system operated flawlessly today, providing detailed Te, Vf, Isat measurements from each of the probe electrodes. Electron temperature fluctuations with peak values up to 100 eV were recorded by the system. Detailed analyses will need to be performed and critically assessed, but at face-value, the system appears to be a dream come true -- just plug it in to a probe and Te, Vf, and Isat data streams directly into your digitizer channels; all bias settings are handled automatically by the MLP. The MP called for performing density scans at each of three values of plasma current (0.55, 0.8, 1.1 MA) with 5.4 tesla field and to operate the probe in scanning and fixed position modes (at the limiter radius). We managed to finish the 0.55 and 0.8 MA portion of the MP with the probe scanning, but ran out of time and could not take the fixed-position data (0.8 MA). We did not have time to even attempt a 1.1 MA plasma. GPI was operated almost all day, puffing helium after 1.2 s in most discharges. This caused the density to rise above the programmed value after this time -- something we were willing to live with. Detailed Shot Log: A. | No problems today with running the shots, i.e., the data system, power supplies, PLC's etc. all ran without a hitch. The main issue that developed during the latter half of the run had to do with fizzles, most often but not always (see shot 13) caused by disruptions. A major disruption (mid pulse) occured on shot 16 and that required two fizzles to "clean up". Fizzles began to occur more regularly beginnning with shot 26. (On shot 25 and subsequent shots there were density limit disruptions during rampdown.)There is a strong correlation between the fizzles and a preceding disruption, but it is not clear how to tune the machine parameters to avoid them. It is conjectured that a disruption kicks up "dirt" which leaves the wall in a contaminated state and leads to a problem "burning out" on the subsequent shot. One or more fizzles then clean the wall, and eventually burnout occurs allowing a proper plasma to form. Since valuable machine time is lost due to fizzles it might be worthwhile to develop a mitigation method, e.g., between shot discharge cleaning.
