| This run is in support of MP 691, Development of TEM in high performance ITBs
Overnight boronization. This work will begin at noon. Presumably boron recovery will be complete by then. We will need argon for Hirex, but it should be kept at the minimum that is needed for measuremets of Ti and rotation profiles. We will begin with at least one locked mode shot for HIREX calibration. The shots should be based on shot 1040310014. Once preliminary shots have been taken, we need to set up EDA H-mode shots at 6.3 T (possibly 6.25 T) to try to obtain reproducible ITBs. We would like to begin with 3MW ICRF power Once a good data set (HIREX, PCI, Thomson, other fluctuations) have been obtained at this power level, the power level should be increased over several shots to obtain fluctuation data with increasing power. |

| This run is in support of MP 691, Development of TEM in high performance ITBs
We begin on shot 15 with a locked mode shot. We had 2 locked mode shots, 1 no power shots, and most of the remainder exhibited ITB peaking. The best shots were 21-24, but most of the shots generated usable ITBs. Today we focused on re-establishing high power ITBs. Tomorrow we will focus on increasing the ICRF power into them. Shot 15-- Locked mode shot for HIREX. Signal low, so we might need another later. We will be setting up the EDA H-mode and ITB over the next few shots. Shot 16-- No power shot Shot 17--No steady H-mode. Many faults on the ICRF. It is suggested that we raise the density somewhat to get EDA H-modes Shot 18--One steady H-mode, but not long enough for a good ITB. Many back transitions after that. We still don't have steady rf, D dropped out early. It may take a while to get the shot set up. Shot 19--One steady (0.4 s) H-mode. There was a weak amount of peaking, leaning towards ITB. Two back transitions after that. We still don't have steady rf, D dropped out early. Shot 20--Very late H-mode. No ITB Still having problems with rf tuning. Shot 21--Good long ITB. We need more argon to get the Ti and rotation. Shot 22--Beautiful long ITB. We still need more argon to get the Ti and rotation. Shot 23--Another good ITB. We are still having problems getting argon in. We are changing plenums. Shot 24--Another good ITB, but ended a bit early. The density was much more peaked, and the PCI signature was different. This could be very interesting in the stability analysis, because the temperature is also lower. We had some argon in, but Matt would like more. Shot 25--A couple of Moly injections, but an ITB formed on the last H-mode. We have enough argon. The rf power is at 3.5 Mhz. We need to make sure we have good rotation and Ti data before beginning the power scan. Shot 26--ITB on the second H-mode. We should have HIREX data. We are backing off a little on the ICRF power. Shot 27--ITB on the second H-mode. Repeat to make sure we have good data Shot 28--ITB on the second H-mode A bit more peaked than the one before. HIREX needs a locked mode for the next shot. | MP698 ITER-like Discharges at 2.7T
A 3 hour run was performed to make up for lost time on 1120717 due an alternator shutdown. Recovery of 1120717021 with the previous night's boronization was largely done by shot 005, at n/nGr = 0.85, betaN = 1.75. Shot 004 reached the Greenwald density in its EDA H-mode phase. In shot 006 the ICRF power was raised from 4.0 MW to 4.5 MW in the flattop. In shot 007 the ICRF power was raised to 5 MW in flattop, although there were several dropouts. The betan values were consistently reaching sustained values of 1.8 for over 500 ms, with excursions above 2.0. The ICRF power in the rampdown was obtained in 007 and we got a full rampdown. We began to incrementally increase the density request with shot 008 to maintain the flattop EDA H-mode density near the target of 0.85nGr. By shot 010 we were not getting the ICRF power to remain steady, and introduced neon. Although 010 disrupted, the same was tried in 011-014, and the neon clearly improved the ICRF power. 3 levels were tried, 50, 40 and 30 V. The 2 higher were satisfactory, while the lowest seem not quite enough. Although the radiated power rose over no neon, it was not detrimental. High Pnet over n values were obtained, up to 1.3 with H98 values as high as 0.9. The final discharge gave betan > 2 for over 300 ms. The 10 KHz MHD signal was evident on several shots, however, it could take on a range of characters. Overall for MP698, the runday was quite successful, providing a significant extension of the database for ITER-like flattop performance at the high density operating point. | Startup was good all day.
Good ITER like plasmas (650 kA, 2.7T) for the 1st part. Also good RF power > 4.5 MW with Neon puff (from B-side lower) (shot 12, 13 etc). Good ITB plasmas (1 MA, 6.25 T) for the 2nd part. Using H-bottom 3 psi for Argon puff seemed to be not working (shot 16-22). Switched back to B0-side lower for Argon since shot 23. plasma attempts: 30 fizzle: ZERO (0) no power shot: 1 (due to engineering operator error) Several early disruptions in the beginning to recover from boronization. |
