| This run is in support of MP 691, Development of TEM in high performance ITBs. It is a continuation of yesterday afternoons run.
Part 1 is Complete: (Once preliminary shots have been taken, we need to set up EDA H-mode shots at 6.3 T (possibly 6.25 T) to try to obtain reproducible ITBs. We would like to begin with 3MW ICRF power) Part 2 will continue from shot 1120719030. ICRF power will be increased shot by shot, making sure that we have a good data set for several different power settings. We will need to take at least 1 locked mode shot during the morning. We expect to turn over the run to another MP at noon. |

I'll just start from the last shot, or the last good shot and follow the SL's directions. This ought to be just completion of a power scan. I may want to increase the PG4 puff, since the ones on Thursday seem a little bouncy. At some point after the first shot, we'll need a locked mode based on shot#1120719029. The second run will be another attempt at Chi Gao's MP#702 on cold pulses. He is calling for some very low density shots, which may be a challenge since Catherine's run is going to be loading up the walls all morning with high density ITB discharges. I propose to see how bad the wall loading is and if it doesn't look like it will come down on it's own after a shot or two then we will stop and ECDC in Helium for an hour, assuming time is available, before proceeding. For MP#702: Increase Argon pressure in B-side lower to 1.5psi, if it isn't already close to that. Reduce TF current limit to 165kA. Ip=800kA cases:Load seg2 from 1120607008, which has nl04 programmed at 4.2e19 and see what we get. This shot actually gave 3.5e19 when it ran. He's looking for a shot at 0.3 and one at 0.4e20, and also one at 7.5e19 with everything else the same, so if he gets them in reverse order while trying for the lower density it won't hurt. If it looks like the walls are too loaded, then stop and ECDC in helium for an hour. Ip=1.1 MA cases: Load seg3 from 1120620024 and reduce TF_CURRENT to 150kA. The rest of the programming seems to be identical to the 1120607 shots except for current and nl04=5.4e19, but load it anyway just in case. Run shots at .54, .90, and 1.2e20. It turns out the density gain is higher on this day, which is a good idea. Ramping density cases at 3 currents: Start from 1120106032 at 1.1MA, raise the P and D gains on nl04, maybe boost the pg3 feedforward puff. Change to 800kA, change nl04 ramp to go from 3.5 to 7e19 Change to 550kA, change nl04 ramp to go from 2.4 to 4.8e19 (right!) Then do a final locked mode shot, ref 1120719029 |

PO Plan for Friday, July 20, 2012 - ADDENDUM The scheduled runs for today may not fill the available time, in which case we may try to squeeze in some tail ends of experiments that could use "a few more shots" and have time remaining on their allocations. At this point, candidates include: MP698 "2.7T ITER-like discharges" Wolfe substituting for Kessel MP689 "gyrokinetic validation" Reinke & Sung substituting for White All of this is contingent on the already scheduled experiments completing their allocated time without unforeseen delays. |

| This run is in support of MP 691, Development of TEM in high performance ITBs. It is a continuation of the afternoon run of 1120719.
We set up using 1120719030. There was nearly an hour delay for a computer problem requiring rebooting several systems. Most of the non-locked mode shots had ITBs with the exception of 10 and 11. Best shots were 2,3, and 5. 1 and 6 were good but had no HIREX data. Shot 1--Good shot with a likely ITB. There was no HIREX data nor Thomson data on that shot, however. We will repeat the shot. Shot 2--Good shot, good data set. Good ITB. We will raise the rf power to 4.5 MW Shot 3--Good shot, good data set. Good ITB. We will repeat this shot Shot 4--Too many back transitions. We need to take a short break for Josh to fix the computer issues Shot 5--Likely ITB on the first H-mode. We are getting RF faults. We will try reducing the magnetic field slightly to see if we can get steady power. Shot 6--Likely ITB on the first H-mode. No HIREX Data, so we will take the shot again. Shot 7--Too many back transitions. Probably too much radiated power. We will take a locked mode shot for HIREX next. Shot 8--locked mode shot for HIREX. Shot 9--Too many back transitions. J is up against its limit for power. We will back off on power by ~200 kW Shot 10--Too many back transitions. No ITBs. We will try to raise the current to 1.1 MA Shot 11--Too many back transitions. No good ITBs. We will return the current to 1 MA and raise the target density slightly. Shot 12--No H-mode. Density too high. Shot 13--Fizzle |

| Run summary: make up hour for MP653B Hidden Variables in Neo-Alcator Scaling
Very productive hour -- four useful shots, filling in the constant Te0 density/power scans from 0207 and 0718. 22: fills in one left most point in the const. Te0=3.1 density/power scan from 1120718 at nl04=0.4-0.5 with Te0=3.0 keV. 23: locked mode 24: fills in another left most point in the const. Te0=3.1 density/power scan from 1120718 at nl04=0.43, Te0=3.1 keV. 25: fills in nl04=0.60, Te0=2.4 in 1120207 const. Te0=2.3 density/power scan. 26: fills in nl04=0.65, Te0=2.52 in 1120207 const. Te0=2.3 density/power scan. Reflectometer flucts in 026 follow density oscillations about the nl04=0.62 loc-soc critical density. We could be observing a fluctuation signature of the loc-soc transition, moving back and forth across it. Same thing but slower on 025. It could also be a change in position with respect to fixed localized fluctuations. Zeff is running a little higher today. Thanks again! |

PO Summary for Friday, July 20, 2012
SL's: Fiore, MP#691
Gao, MP#702
Ernst, MP#653b
PO: wolfe
EO:Parkin, Pfeiffer, Toland
We got through three experiments today, one scheduled in at the
last minute. The machine ran well, but we had computer problems
that cost us some time in the morning and again in the afternoon.
Josh managed to get us going again after each meltdown. There may
be an ongoing issue with Alcserv1.
We started on MP#691 from the last shot on Thursday, 1120719030. The run
got off to a slow start, partially because of computer problems. Eventually,
Josh rebooted alcserv1, which fixed the problems for a while. Argon
puffs that were too small yesterday turned out to be excessive today,
apparently because the helium purge in HIREX was working better. Cutting
back on the argon may have helped with the EDA/ITB-ness of the H-modes,
but was not sufficient. As the power was increased and the run went
along, we had more radiative collapses and back transitions. The fact that
the 78MHz resonance had to be located very close to the antennas wasn't
helping either; the antenna tiles were clearly lighting up. There were
also issues with HIREX_SR data acquisition, which may or may not have been
related to the general computer issues. Nevertheless, Catherine managed to
get some data from the power scan through shot#11. It was not clear if
the boronization was just too degraded for good EDA or if the target
was just at too low density for the power.
On shot 12 I tried
to raise the density by changing the gains on NL04, since it was already
drawn at 1.25e20 and we were only getting up to 1.1e20. While I was at
it, I tried recalculating the predictor, in order to make sure
that the correct TCI calibration was being used. Unfortunately, I
accidentally put the predictor weight on the input_079 (Chopper
current) instead of input_080 (NL04), which resulted in the feedback
turning the gas on full throughout the shot, leading to a very high
density and disruption around 1.4sec. I fixed the predictor for the
next shot, which was the last in Catherine's part of the run, but
it ended up in the only fizzle of the week. Mea culpa.
Chi Gao's MP#702 was run from shot#14-21, and went better than I expected.
There was no problem reaching the low density he was asking for, despite
the morning of high density discharges and the super-high density disruption
on shot#12. The first shot disrupted, but mainly because of excessive
argon and too large LBO injections. We then ran a successful 4.3e19 flattop,
after adjustments to the P and D gains on the NL04. After some changes
to LBO we moved on to the 1.1MA case, skipping the higher density 800kA
points. The low density point at the higher current got a locked mode
disruption, which was cured by raising the early density demand, at
the expense of having to come back down to the target and therefore
having the first LBO pulses at the wrong density. After securing the LOC
point at this current, we went on to get two SOC conditions at 0.9 and
1.2e2, nominally. There was a one hour lossage between shots 20 and 21
(and an aborted shot#21 that never happened) due to an alcserv1 crash.
The final hour of the run, #22-26, was taken by Darin Ernst, making up for the
time he lost on Wednesday on MP#653b. He really wanted the cryopump for his USN
experiment, but due to a communication snafu I had thought he was not
going to be running today, and around 14:00 had had Frank shut down the
cryopump, which he had put in standby mode before the start of the run for
use in this or one other possible fill-in experiment. As it happened, we
were able to run the cases he requested without the cryopump, although
the density was more oscillatory than we would have liked because I
never did get the P and D gains properly balanced. His run started
from 1120207032 (segment 4); I loaded the whole shot and then reimported
the segment 1, since the startups today were working, except for the
one post-disruption fizzle. He also had a locked mode disruption
problem because of the initial low target density, which I fixed in the
same way as in Chi's experiment, by raising the nl04 demand before 0.5sec.
This was successful, and we ended up getting four useful shots in under
an hour of run time. See the SL_SUMMARY for details.

| Jul 20 2012 05:18:17:997PM | 1120720026 | Darin Ernst | good. nl04=0.65 with oscillations. Hit Te0 = 2.44.
Reflectometer flucts follow density oscillations, as if moving in and out of a localized turbulent region. This could be extremely interesting, since nl04=0.62 is the loc-soc critical density. We could be observing a fluctuation signature of the loc-soc transition, moving back and forth across it. Same thing but slower on 025. Thanks for the make up time! We were able to fill in two shots in the 2.3 keV constant Te/Ti scan. |

Matt reports satisfactory argon signal from hirex Second h-mode could be ITB, but power wasn't steady Next: repeat |
| Jul 20 2012 09:57:16:260AM | 1120720004 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#4: repeat of shot 3 Result: plasma full length, 3 h-modes, injection early in the first one. second one looks promising on neuts, bounces in startup looking a little worse. Getting magnetics warnings every shot, probably from long tf pulse; EFIT chisq's are pretty normal. I don't think this shot is satisfactory, probably will repeat Josh still dealing with computer problem(s). He may reboot a server before the next shot. |
| Jul 20 2012 10:39:15:883AM | 1120720005 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#5: repeat of shot 4 Prior to this shot, josh rebooted alchome Once cmodws50 was again able to see the home dir, a build completed in 13seconds. Still no changes to load. Took a test shot 1120720101 on dpcs: outputs look ok, log file looks ok, 5.8sec in init, 4.4sec in store. Josh is also doing something separate but possibly related to the RF station. Ready to go after 40 minutes in recool Result: plasma full length Two h-modes. First one looks promising Startup hanging in there, bounces no better, no worse, no action taken RF ratty. Next: Back off the field a bit |
| Jul 20 2012 10:50:08:400AM | 1120720006 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#6: Back off the field a bit to 6.2T, TF_CURRENT from 174.0 to 172.3 Load at 20-Jul-2012 10:42:45.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: plasma full length Multiple h-modes, may be due to rf faulting. Workstations are still hanging up, Josh is back in the room Next: ?? |
| Jul 20 2012 11:07:34:040AM | 1120720007 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#7: Repeat (again) with HIREX_SR data (we hope) Actually, reduce argon to 35msec Load at 20-Jul-2012 10:58:28.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Plasma full length, but still multiple h-modes Next: run a locked mode calibration shot |
| Jul 20 2012 11:26:32:000AM | 1120720008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#8: run a locked mode calibration shot Turn off seg2, turn on seg3 and raise PG1 to 100% for 300msec (was at 60%) Load at 20-Jul-2012 11:10:26.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: disrupted in rampdown, got a locked mode at the usual time HIREXers are happy. Next: Back to ITB's. Go to higher RF power |
| Jul 20 2012 11:44:47:120AM | 1120720009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9: Back to ITB's. Go to higher RF power Back to seg2, no change in pcs program this time Load at 20-Jul-2012 11:28:21.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Plasma full length, but at least four or five h-modes. RF very choppy. Next: Adjusting rf sharing. No PCS change |
| Jul 20 2012 12:16:27:923PM | 1120720010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#10: Adjusting rf sharing. No PCS change Result: plasma full length, too many H-modes (3 decent ones, 1 little guy near eof) RF looked pretty good, no faults on E or J before 1.3sec, D trips on first and 2nd H->L but recovers for a while. P > 4.5MW Hmodes are pretty ELM-free looking. H/D is around 0.05, so boronization may not be completely gone, but... SL says no ITB Next: Raise Ip to 1.1MA |
| Jul 20 2012 12:26:33:540PM | 1120720011 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#11: Raise Ip to 1.1MA Load at 20-Jul-2012 12:17:20.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: plasma full length, four? H-modes Less EDA character, not too surprising Next: back to 1MA, raise target density |
| Jul 20 2012 12:53:04:583PM | 1120720012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#12: back to 1MA, raise target density NL04 program is already at 1.25e20, raise NL04 gains: P from 3 to 8, D from 4 to 10. While I'm at it, recall the predictor to be sure it has the correct calibration Load at 20-Jul-2012 12:31:10.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Disrupted before eof, at 1.45sec Gas just turned on full. May have screwed up the nl04 feedback. I clicked on the wrong menu item in the custom it was feeding back on the chopper current! Operator Error! nl04 reached 3.6e20 before it disrupted. Distuption is due to power supply railings on OH2's, chopper floors trying to do proportional gain. Lots of gate valves closed. Probably will have a fizzle next shot. |
| Jul 20 2012 01:08:22:100PM | 1120720013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#13: Redo the nl04 controller, put it on NL04 this time! Load at 20-Jul-2012 12:47:58.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done No other pcs changes, but it will probably fizzle. Fluxihh failed on shot#12, logfile shows i/o error on alcdaq4. Josh is checking on alcdaq4, says we can go ahead. Result: Fizzle, not surprising. Next: Change over to Chi Gao's MP#702. |
| Jul 20 2012 01:29:25:170PM | 1120720014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14: Change over to Chi Gao's MP#702. Reduce TF current limit to 165, add 0.5psi to argon in bside lower Import seg2 from 1120607008 In seg1 reduce pg4 from 20 to 18msec to compensate for residual effects of disruption on #12. Load at 20-Jul-2012 13:15:59.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done plasma disrupts at 0.8 sec. Injection at .7 and a killer at .79sec, nl04 was down to 2.8e19 but then rose starting at 0.7sec There is not a locked mode, although there may have been one at .49 to .52sec. The injection at 0.7sec may have been intentional, but it looks like something came in with it. Argon is deemed excessive, reduce to 100msec and increase density |
| Jul 20 2012 01:39:58:500PM | 1120720015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: reduce to pg1 100msec and increase density Density is programmed for 4.2e19, but was as low as 2.8 Try increasing the P gain from 2 to 6, D gain from 3 to 8 Leave the predictor alone this time! Load at 20-Jul-2012 13:32:49.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done plasma full length, got LBO's all the way through nl04 is at 4.3e19 at the base of the injections, right on programmed value Next: SL wants smaller LBO injections, repeat this shot after cell access to adjust laser |
| Jul 20 2012 01:55:07:187PM | 1120720016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16: SL wants smaller LBO injections, repeat this shot after cell access to adjust laser Result: plasma full length, no LBO (didn't get enabled) Nl04 is flat at 4.1e19. The curse of 702 continues Ion gauge on LBO won't turn on. Another cell access to investigate/repair Next: repeat |
| Jul 20 2012 02:07:37:867PM | 1120720017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#17: repeat, still trying for nl04=4e19 with satisfactory LBO plasma full length with LBO. Hopefully, time to move on. Next: Change to higher current case, 1.1MA |
| Jul 20 2012 02:38:50:390PM | 1120720019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#19: increase early density demand to avoid locked mode. It is LOC Next: raise nl04 to 0.9 |
| Jul 20 2012 02:54:22:217PM | 1120720020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#20: raise nl04 to 0.9e20 Load at 20-Jul-2012 14:39:24.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: plasma full length, with LBO nl04 is 0.85e20 or so, might be able to use a little more P gain Next: Go to nl04=1.2e20 |
| Jul 20 2012 03:32:04:140PM | 1120720021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21: Go to nl04=1.2e20, just changed the waveform didn't increase gain Load at 20-Jul-2012 14:56:24.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Ack failure in INIT, no power shot Will try again System-wide computer meltdown, delaying until Josh fixes and gives the go ahead. Not sure if next shot is going to be 21 or 22 |
| Jul 20 2012 03:50:48:853PM | 1120720021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21: Go to nl04=1.2e20, just changed the waveform didn't increase gain Load at 20-Jul-2012 14:56:24.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Trying again after computer problem Result: Plasma full length, got LBO If the data comes through that's the end of 702 run Next: Ernst taking over as SL on MP#653b |
| Jul 20 2012 04:16:39:533PM | 1120720022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: Ernst taking over as SL on MP#653b Reference shot is 1120207032, active segment is 4 Load that, re-import seg1 from 1120720021 This was run originally with the cryopump, and Frank has turned it off since I thought Darin wasn't go take this hour, have to see what we get. Load at 20-Jul-2012 16:02:14.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: plasma full length, 1MA, USN, nl04=5+/-1e19, some wobble, can play with D gain, get rid of Igain. RF=0.8MW Next: increase NL04 D gain from 6 to 9, turn off I gain Reduce TF to 150kA from 153. Reuce pg1 from 2 puffs @100msec to one puff at 60msec |
| Jul 20 2012 04:23:11:920PM | 1120720023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: increase NL04 D gain from 6 to 9, turn off I gain Reduce TF to 150kA from 153. Maybe I need to bump up the P gain as well. The present P program drops from 6 to 4 at .6sec, should keepo it at 6 or go to 8. Next: Make P go up to 8 at 0.6sec, bump D up to 9 |
| Jul 20 2012 04:49:36:653PM | 1120720025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25: Make P go up to 8 at 0.6sec, bump D up to 9 Change nl04 demand to 5.8e19 Ramp clearin and rcur down faster in rampdown Load at 20-Jul-2012 16:41:42.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: plasma into rampdown, disrupts at 1.55, seems to have made that worse. Clearin ramp started at 1.6 instead of 1.5, rcur started earlier NL04 is close to program, call it 5.5e19. Next: Start clearin ramp earlier, see SL for flattop changes |
| Jul 20 2012 05:04:14:933PM | 1120720026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26: Start clearin ramp earlier, change density demand to 0.7e20. drop max P gain back to 7 from 8 Load at 20-Jul-2012 16:53:46.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: plasma full length Density is averaging ok, but still has wobbles, P gain is still too high it's 7 +/- 1; have to do.
