MP 701: Impact of low-Z impurity concentration on core and pedestal transport in EDA H-modes

SL: M.L. Reinke
PO: R. Granetz

OVERVIEW
====================================
The purpose of this run is to study the core and pedestal transport in more detail in plasmas similar to those run under MP 564 (1090922, 1091019, 1110903) where impurity seeding helped to enable high performance, H98 > 1.0, and high fusion reactivity (i.e. neutron rate). This will be a diagnostic-heavy run. We will start with target plasma 1101215012 (5.4 T, 900 kA, nl04=0.9), reduce Ip to 800 kA and adjust the inner/outer strikepoint locations.

Run will go from 9:00 - 6:00 pm with the 5:00-6:00 pm being used as contingency in case of delay during the day. "Golden hour" authorization will come from S. Wolfe based on accounting during the day.

***CAUTION***
While not a central focus of MP 701, neutron production in similar seeded H-mode runs have lead to neutron alerts early in the run day and elevated radiation levels in the cell following the run. Please pay attention for alerts from C. Fiore. Magnetic equilibrium will likely be fixed early in the day and most of the day used to scan gas and aux. power input, so instruments with adjustable views should be fixed early.
***CAUTION***

RUN PLAN
=====================================
Parts A-E of the MP will be explored during this run day, featuring ONLY neon seeding.

[A] post-BZN recovery (~10 shots). We are looking to not only condition up the ICRF and adjust diagnostics but also reduce the neutral pressure.
The exact level is not critical, just so it asymtotes and isn't a variable during parts [C] & [D].

1) establish target plasma (1101215012 w/ Ip lowered to 800 kA) w/ Ne at 50% from 0.4-0.6 seconds and ICRF power at 3.5 MW. Ar from 0.3-0.35 at 50%. [No NINJAs, no LHRF, no LBO]. ICRF pulse from 0.6-1.5 seconds w/ D+E used in rampdown as necessary.

2) add perturbing diagnostics - NINJAs hit at 1.4 seconds, LBO hits at 1.3 seconds

3) investigate use of LH to modify the edge, 300 kW from 1.0-1.4 seconds.

[B] HIREXSR locked mode calibration (~1-2 shots)
Load 1120626029 which uses H-BOT for argon

[C] scan Ne fraction at fixed nl04 and P_NET and no LHRF (~10 shots)
1) Ne puff 0.4-0.6 @ 30%, ICRF scan from 3.0-3.5 MW
2) Ne puff 0.4-0.6 @ 75%, ICRF scan from 4.0-4.5 MW
3) Ne puff 0.4-0.6 @ 50%, ICRF scan from 3.5-4.0 MW
4) Ne puff 0.4-0.6, 0.9-0.95, 1.1-1.15 @ 75% ICRF scan from 4.5-5.0 MW
5) (optional) chose best from C1-C4 and run with max P_ICRF

[D] at fixed Ne fraction, scan a neutral density puff during the flattop. (~10 shots)
Use the G-MID-OUT (LFS near G/H limiter) NINJA puff so as not to perturb the B-port neutral density measurements. Choose best reproducible shot from C1-C4. Times for NINJA puff are when the gas should hit the plasma. Gas pressure adjusted shot-to-shot to vary the fueling rate.
1) t=1.0, 300 ms @ 10 psi
2) t=1.0, 300 ms @ 20 psi
3) t=1.0, 300 ms @ 30 psi
4) t=1.0, 300 ms @ 40 psi
5) (optional) if LHRF shows interesting results in [A] then add LHRF into choice of D1-D4
6) (optional) if time repeat cases of D1-D4 using B-MID-IN (inner wall @ B-PORT).

SL_SUMMARY FOR 112075 - MP 701

We had a really successful run today, running through 29 plasmas w/o any fizzles/duds or and only one early disruption1 (001). We had a full-length EDA H-mode by shot 003 and all shots were FULL of diagnostics. Thanks to everyone who spent the day in the control room keeping the data flowing.

SHOTS: 003-012 PART [A] w/ 011 a locked mode [B]
SHOTS: 013-023 PART [C]
SHOTS: 024-029 PART [D]

We kept pace with the SL_PLAN but the boronization had degraded too much to get plasmas steady enough to accomplish [D]. We should have some data from the natural neutral pressure scan in part [A].

The LHRF into EDA H-modes we tried in [A] was amazingly successful. The density drop and temperature rise was clearly demonstrated and increased with PRF, with some indication of saturation between 600-700 kW, but we didn't really investigate that thoroughly. Shots 005-007 are a really nice PLH scan in fixed EDA H-mode. For shot 012 we moved the NINJA into the LH pulse and Jim Terry found that the edge turbulence demonstrated a remarkable change promptly with the application of LHRF. This will require a lot of investigation, but I think we have a good amount of data.

For part [C] we were able to scan the Ne seeding over a factor of 2, going from H/L back-transitions due to Ne when it was too high and H/L transition due to Mo being too high. 013,014 and 016 have steady portions while 015 and 018 have too much Ne and Mo respectively with P_ICRF from 4.0-4.5 MW. 019,021 and 022 are a similar Ne scan at slightly higher P_ICRF ~ 4.5-5.0 MW. These should be good to look at transport changes with Ne fraction. My only worry is that these are at marginal H_98 ~ 0.8 so we might not be accessing the "elevated" confinement regime we identified

The last few shots we tried to study the neutral density effects, but except for 026 there wasn't really a steady shot to add NINJA + LHRF. I think this would be a worthwhile microproposal for a few shots in a more well boronized machine.

There's a GOBS and GOBS of data from this run we got through a good chunk of the SL_PLAN. To be continued after Oct. 1st, hopefully.

MP701 - Impact of low-Z impurity concentration on core and pedestal
        transport in EDA H-modes

Session leader: M. Reinke
Physics operator: R. Granetz

The goals of today's run were to have EDA H-modes with lots of neon and
argon puffing, with 3.5-4 MW of ICRF, some LH occasionally, and many
impurity diagnostics taking data. We were very successful at meeting these
goals. Recover from last night's boronization was a non-issue. The ICRF
and LH both ran well. We also had laser blowoff of aluminum, as well as
NINJA puffing of D2 and He. There were no significant problems with power
supplies, computers, or the tokamak.

Scorecard: 29 plasmas

Jul 25 2012 09:10:57:930AM1120725001Matt ReinkeLoad target plasma (1101215012 - lowering Ip to 800 kA and tweaking x-point) and demonstrate seeded EDA H-mode.
Steady ICRF ~ 3.5 MW. [no NINJAs, LBO in rampdown].

RESULT: early disruption, see Ti in the plasma and a blast from J-ANT faraday screen

NEXT: repeat
Jul 25 2012 09:30:25:417AM1120725002Matt Reinkerepeating target plasma, looking for first H-mode before adding the piggies

RESULT: few H-modes w/ ratty ICRF but probably a bit too much PRAD. Still getting some blasts from J-ANT. Jim says the IR camera is happy.

NEXT: turning down the Neon, putting D+E in the ramp down and making adjustment for TS pedestal profiles.
Jul 25 2012 09:43:35:757AM1120725003Matt Reinkerepeating target plasma, almost there. Less Ne (40% from 50%), ICRF in the rampdown and (see PO entry) adjustment to the LCFS to optimze Thomson pedestal coverage.

RESULT: Good steady EDA H-mode! Mo injections early in H-mode elevate PRAD. H-alpha and neutral pressure evolves over the shot

NEXT: repeat with added diagnostics
Jul 25 2012 09:54:03:120AM1120725004Matt Reinkerepeat H-mode target but Send in the Clowns! Add some extra diagnostics.
1) NINJA hits at 1.4
2) LBO at 1.3
3) Shoelace ANT after 1.0 seconds

RESULT: excellent repeat! Don't see anything too perturbing from any of the above

NEXT: repeat target, but add LHRF (1.0-1.25)
Jul 25 2012 10:13:21:473AM1120725005Matt Reinkerepeating target, trying to bring down the neutral pressure, but adding LHRF into the steady EDA H-mode from 1.0-1.25, Greg says ~200 kW.

RESULT: another great EDA H-mode, but neutral fueling is still high

NEXT: repeat target with high LHRF power
Jul 25 2012 10:30:31:893AM1120725006Matt Reinkerepeat target EDA H-mode, increasing the PLH to ~ 500 kW

RESULT: great shot, effect from LH increased with power

NEXT: repeat with another increase in PLH
Jul 25 2012 10:40:53:260AM1120725007Matt Reinkerepeat target EDA increasing PLH to ~650 kW

RESULT: the increased lower hybrid power let to an increase in temperature and decreased density. LH getting a hotspot which limits Power and length

NEXT: increase outer gap by 3 mm per LH request. Increase PLH.
Jul 25 2012 10:59:20:630AM1120725008Matt Reinkerepeat EDA target with increased PLH and a slightly larger outer gap to preven LH overheating

RESULT: looks like we're near saturating the LHRF effect, argon & PRAD is creeping up and target nl04 is probably a bit high. Getting an increase in PRAD from Mo during the pulse

NEXT: reduce nl04 demand from 1.0 to 0.95, reduce Ar puff from 50 ms to 40 ms. Increase LH time to be from 0.9-1.25
Jul 25 2012 11:14:39:780AM1120725008Matt Reinkeslightly lower nl04 and argon, increase LH pulse length. neutral pressure still coming down

RESULT: the LH effect reaches steady state, argon drops

NEXT: increase PLH from 1.0-1.35, move NINJAs to hit inside the LH pulse
Jul 25 2012 11:38:55:227AM1120725010Matt Reinkeincrease the length of time of the LH pulse and put NINJA to hit at 1.2

RESULT: got a Mo injection during the H-mode which dropped it back to L-mode

NEXT: do locked mode
Jul 25 2012 11:54:56:987AM1120725011Matt Reinkerun locked mode for HIREXSR

RESULT: great locked mode

NEXT: repeat 010 with adjusted diagnostic coverage
Jul 25 2012 12:13:18:153PM1120725012Matt Reinkeback to 010, the EDA target. Earlier, the GPI was seeing very interesting changes in the edge turbulence so we've want to repeat 010 w/o injection and get the GPI cameras w/ He filters.

RESULT: some LH trips, but the GPI got their data

NEXT: start part [C], the Ne concentration scan
Jul 25 2012 12:31:53:173PM1120725013Matt Reinkestarting the Ne concentration scan, increased Ar slightly to get better HIREXSR. Keeping Ne at 40% right now, increasing RF power to scan from 4.0-4.5 MW.

RESULT: rf trip later in shot, but good flattop up till 1.2. PNET is a little low, some of it is Ar.

NEXT: decrease Ne, Ar and target nl04
Jul 25 2012 12:46:35:297PM1120725014Matt Reinkesome tweaks to target: reduce Ne to 35 V, argon to 45 ms, nl04 target to 0.9

RESULT: great shot. Ar dropped, Ne dropped but Mo came up so PRAD is ~same as 012.

NEXT: Increase Ne to 50%
Jul 25 2012 12:59:36:630PM1120725015Matt Reinkeincreasing Ne to 50%

RESULT: too much Ne, getting H/L back-transitions - 45% would probably do it, but lets make a big step down to see where we are in the Ne+Mo=PRAD

NEXT: drop to 25% on the Ne
Jul 25 2012 01:23:26:067PM1120725015Matt Reinkerepeat target shot with Ne at 25%

RESULT: lower Ne and higher Mo

NEXT: raise Ne to 45%
Jul 25 2012 01:35:03:817PM1120725017Matt Reinkeincreasing Ne to 45%

RESULT: again, too much Ne and getting H/L transitions

NEXT: reduce Ar and Ne and repeat
Jul 25 2012 01:59:20:207PM1120725018Matt Reinkedecreasing Ne to 20% and decrease Ar to 60%

RESULT: unhappy early with injection that went to a MARFE, but also had some H/L transitions that look Mo induced

NEXT: increase Ne back to 45% and increase PRF to 4.5-5.0 MW
Jul 25 2012 02:16:27:060PM1120725019Matt ReinkeAr back down to 50 and Ne up to 45%, increase ICRF power to get some more PNET, help stay in H-mode.

RESULT: good 1st half of the shot, some RF trip out

NEXT: reduce Ne to 35%
Jul 25 2012 02:29:36:357PM1120725020Matt Reinkereducing Ne to 35%

RESULT: J-ANT matching was off, a rare mistake from Yijun

NEXT: repeat with a little bit more Ar for HIREXSR
Jul 25 2012 02:52:39:030PM1120725021Matt Reinkerepeat w/ better RF and Ar at 60%

RESULT: very nice steady H-mode, Ne down from 019

NEXT: drop Ne down to 25%
Jul 25 2012 03:10:24:300PM1120725022Matt Reinkelowering the Ne puff to 25%, this might be the last shot in [C]

RESULT: good single H-mode but there is time variation

NEXT: increase Ne, decrease Ar slightly
Jul 25 2012 03:24:39:987PM1120725023Matt Reinkeincrease Ne to 50%

RESULT: Ne too high, good scan at 4.5-5.0 MW

NEXT: moving to part [D]
Jul 25 2012 03:45:44:883PM1120725024Matt Reinkechanging over to [D]. Going to put 200 ms @ 10 psi NINJA from (hitting) at 0.95 seconds. LH @ 600 kW from 1.1-1.4 seconds. Ne at 40%

RESULT: got an ELMfree-ish H-mode initially w/ lots of Mo but there was an injection right across the transition...blame that

NEXT: repeat with some diagnostic changes
Jul 25 2012 03:57:32:483PM1120725025Matt Reinkeremoved LBO, set He NINJA to hit at 1.3 seconds. QCM turns on at 1.2 seconds

RESULT: still had the inital radiative collapse which is messing with the pacing of this flattop

NEXT: increase target nl04 and Ne puff
Jul 25 2012 04:14:46:890PM1120725026Matt Reinkeneed to try and get rid of the first H/L back transition. Increasing target nl04 from 0.9-1.0 and Ne to 45%.

RESULT: got the single H-mode back, NINJA shows an effect which is "reversed" by the LHRF

NEXT: increase NINJA pressure
Jul 25 2012 04:31:18:360PM1120725027Matt Reinkeincreasing NINJA pressure to 20 psi, still at 200 ms length.

RESULT: got the early H/L back, RF trips early droped Te and it never really recovered.

NEXT: repeat w/ some RF tweaks
Jul 25 2012 04:51:02:850PM1120725027Matt ReinkeRF trying to get a better match, trying to get single EDA that we can puff NINJA into and apply LHRF.

RESULT: still ugly

NEXT: remove Ar, reduce Ne and shorten NINJA puff
Jul 25 2012 05:00:30:037PM1120725029Matt Reinkereduce Ne to 40%, reduce NINJA pulse to 150 ms, remove Ar puff

RESULT: almost made it, got steady but losses of J led to a H/L transition

NEXT: end of run
