MP699: Explore LHCD efficiency at high density with H(He-3) plasma

SL: S. Shiraiwa
PO: G. Wallace

Goal of this MP is to test to reproduce previous He3 minority
MC heated plasma and apply LHCD to see the benefit of higher
Te target plasma.

A target shot is 950608017. (Ip 800kA, Bt 6.3T, LSN). Reference
shots for control system are 1120710020 (USN), 6 (LSN)

Step 0: ECDC using H2

Step 1: switch over to H2 plasma and reproduce the core electron
heating observed in 950608017. (10 shots including the switch-over)

Start with USN case.

Previous experince indicates the importance of right amount
of He fraction and minimize D2, therefor we will try H
breakdown.

He3 concentration is scanned to compare the mode-conversion
regime and minority heating regime and find a optimum to obtain
highest Te. PCI will be used to monitor the MC layer location

ICRF from 0.65-1.4s
ne_bar = 1.0-1.2e20

LH from 0.8-1.3s 90deg to adjust coupling

2-1 Apply LHCD (5 shots, including one ??non-ICRF" discharge)
LHCD from 0.9-1.4s
75, 90, 120 deg phasing for a reference.
If higher phasing is possible, include 145 deg.
Scanning probe for SOL profile measurement. (making a notch
in RF pulse...?)

2-2 to take ohmic control case.

3. Repeat step 2 with ne_bar = 1.4e20 (5 shots)
4. Repeat step 2 with ne_bar = 0.7e20 (5 shots)
5. If time is available, change Ip to 600kA and/or 1200kA and repeat
step 2. (5 shots)

It was a difficult run day today. We had several
technical issues including slowing down of computer system,
power supply break fault, delay due to alternator...

Major difficult was to make a target plasma reliably.
We got 6 fizzle + 9 disruptions before 0.7s. 3 of
them are early runaway shut down.
Part of the difficult may be due to H2 breakdown,
although previous experiments did not have a big
problem.

We got 5 full length plasma and 2 shots sustained
enough (>1s).

Nonetheless, there is interesting finding and
good news from today's experiment.

Shot 7 and 12 shows a good comparison of OH plasma
and ICRF MC heated plasma. With 2MW of ICRF Te0
reaches transiently 5keV, average (3-3.5keV)
compared to 2keV for OH. PCI shows MC layer located
close to center on this shot.

Interestingly, we found a good current drive at
ne ~ 1.1e20, even with OH! (shot 23). Comparison
of shot 20 and 23 suggests that LHCD can produce
similar amount of fast electrons independent from
ICRF. Generating fast electrons in ICRF heated
plasma at this density is probably good news,
although it sounded me contradictory to our
previous experience to a large degree...

Physop Summary for 1120727

Today's run was in hydrogen majority with helium-3 minority. Breakdown in hydrogen as well. Getting a good startup proved problematic with many fizzles and runaway shutdowns. Also many disruptions due to injections (caused by weak absorption of the mode-converted ICRF?) which caused the usual post-disruption fizzle. Some computer problems in the morning slowed down the start of the run.

The PCS was running very very slowly in the morning. Wolfe suggested a workaround to make it run faster by storing files in a tmp directory rather than grabbing data from the tree for each operation. Instructions as follows:
1) Open a new terminal
2) type "export pcs_scratch=/tmp" and hit enter to set up a scratch directory in tmp
3) type "/usr/local/cmod/codes/pcs/pcs" and hit enter to launch pcs from the command line
This fix reduced the time to load a shot from > 2 min to 15 s.
