Summary of MP709
The day started with many disruptions, which we later attributed to magnetic issues. Once we sorted out the magnetic issues, H/(H+D) ratio was observed to be elevated (>30%) making H-mode regime less sustainable. After multiple attempts at reducing this ratio, we decided (through the relaxation of the shape to insure good ICRF coupling) to dedicate the remaining discharges to the restoration of H-D fraction to manageable levels. It is worth noting that during the course of the day, one of the port of the ICRF became unavailable. The H-D fraction was ultimately reduced during the discharge cleaning session. Shot 26 turned out to be the best shot with an EDA-H mode (with a clear QCM mode), but we were unable to achieve the shape required by the MP. Overall, the machine was not in a good condition to reliably pursue the MP goals, and we hope to have another chance to effectively start and complete MP709.

This was a tough one.

The run followed a Friday run with H majority discharges, and then a weekend
of ECDC in D. We had assumed we might have a little excess H left over in
our initial discharges, but in fact in our early discharges today we saw
H/(H+D) hit levels of 30--50%. Eventually we determined that the B-side
plenum was delivering significant concentrations of H, because it had not
been purged sufficiently well. After 2 purges of B-side during the run,
we began to see the H fraction drop, and in the end we were able to run plasmas
again with H/(H+D) between 5 and 8%. However, during most of the day, the
D(H) heating scheme was not workable, and no progress toward physics goals
could be achieved.

LESSON: When making a main ion species changeover, have B-side (and B-top, if applicable) purged and filled 5 TIMES before running a plasma.

Unfortunately because we were puffing a mix of H and D early on, we don't have
a good sense of what the residual H in the walls looked like due to high power
ops in H on Friday. We also don't know whether there might be some excess H
still trapped under the boronization layer in places.

The H contamination in B-side would have been identified earlier in the day,
but we had a number of other issues that distracted us. On shot 4 there was
a baseline offset warning for F12. After this, EFIT reported very high chi^2 values for a number of coils. We lost a lot of time while Wolfe and Granetz
examined magnetics signals for anomalies. Nothing clear was seen, but it was obvious something was wrong, as MFLUX showed fields on startup that never
should have allowed a clean breakdown. In the end, Granetz found some dungarees
and had a cell access to zap F12, which had in fact developed a high resistance.
While all this was going on, Bill Cochran was dealing with voltage spikes on a
TF2 converter. I do not think these were causally connected.

With these problem fixed, we then had a few shots (8--11) with poor vertical
control. Reloading a known good shot from 1120725, I found that it disrupted in flattop. The control issue stemmed from a large difference between the
voltage measured on the OH2L supply and the voltage on the bus. Wolfe spotted
this, recognized the behavior from a previous run, and called Bill Cochran in
to fix it. This was successful, and shot 13 ran full length without a disruption.

Now it was well after lunch, and we had the high H to contend with.
We had been thinking all morning that H was just stuck in the walls. However,
we began to notice a correlation between the H/(H+D) signal and the B-side puff.
The B-side plenum had been purged and refilled once prior to the run. We
had it purged a second time following shot 14 (along with B-top). There was
still plenty of H, so we purged a again after shot 15. Shot 16 was a
gas test with all valves other than B-side disabled. The RGA registered mostly
D. Shot 17 was a plasma, with H/(H+D) down at the 20% level, and no bump up
associated with puffing. After shot 17, the H/(H+D) came down steadily with
each shot. Unfortunately, by this time (14:30), J-port was out of commission
and required a 30--60 minute repair. D+E were operable, but difficult to tune,
and weren't doing much to heat, given that H/(H+D) was still on the high side.

At around 15:00 we concluded that we had little hope of getting good pedestal
data in the JFT-2M shape, and we decided to condition the machine for the
remainder of the run. I dialed up a standard equilibrium from 1120725 and
Wukitch started putting in joules from D+E. This was successful. H/(H+D)
continued to drop and reached acceptable levels by 17:00. We put a little power
on the upper divertor by sweeping SSEP negative, and saw an
increase in H/(H+D). This did not persist when we went back to LSN.

One other thing to note is that when we operated with the strike point in
the slot today, injections were commonplace. Fe was the dominant impurity.
This was an issue on some shots on 1120621 as well.
The divertor floor may prove to be more inhospitable this campaign than in the
past.

Load from 1120621025. Active segment is 4!
In seg 4, raise nl04 program to 1e20 at 0.6s.
Now import seg 1 from 1120725002 into seg 1
(a recent good 5.4T, D2, post-boronization, non-cryopump startup)

Load at 30-Jul-2012 15:46:58.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: No power test shot was taken by engineering well before I arrived.
Successful cycle test.
Jul 31 2012 09:18:22:123AM1120731002Jerry HughesShot 2.

Plasma attempt based on 1120621025 with increased nl04.

Result: More or less reaches target density.
Many injections early. Disrupts at 0.8s following a large Prad increase.
Chalk it up to boronization cleanup?

Jul 31 2012 09:31:45:823AM1120731003Jerry HughesShot 3.

Changes:
Reduce pre-puff from 17ms to 15ms for post-disruption startup.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 09:18:35.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Fizzle. Pressure was a bit higher than on shot 2, but not extremely so.
Bz is a bit negative.

Jul 31 2012 09:45:44:713AM1120731004Jerry HughesShot 4

Changes:

In seg 1, change IC_EF4U from -1300A to -1290A.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 09:33:03.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Disruption at 0.71s this time. Early injections improved, I think.
There is still a substantial one before the RF comes on, and some after.

Jul 31 2012 10:27:55:137AM1120731005Jerry HughesShot 5:

Bill Cochran having a power room access.

PO changes:

In seg 4, change RCUR in flattop from 0.660 to 0.662

Load at 31-Jul-2012 09:52:08.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Made it a bit farther. Disruption at 0.97s.
Interesting. EFIT suggests the strike is on the EF1 corner. (although
EFIT has huge chisquared on this shot . . . not clear why)
This is where we saw I-modes before, and there does appear to be a Te
pedestal in the Thomson, and possibly WCMs on reflectometry.

Jul 31 2012 10:39:43:890AM1120731006Jerry HughesShot 6.

Wolfe and Granetz can not easily explain the large chi squared errors on
EFIT for shot 5. Flux loop signals look reasonable. Cautiously, we will proceed.

Changes:
In seg 4, Get RCUR up to 0.662 by 0.6s.
Change RXL from -0.045 to -0.040. (Trying to move strike point more outboard)

Load at 31-Jul-2012 10:25:51.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Still disrupting. There is still a disconnect between magnetics and
reality. Also there are persistent voltage spikes on the TF2 converter
that Bill Cochran is diagnosing.
Jul 31 2012 11:09:35:983AM1120731007Jerry HughesShot 7

Change to Seg 4: RXL from -0.04 to -0.03.
Try to get the X/strike in a more conventional location and see if this can
be made to run through.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 11:01:36.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Fizzle.

Jul 31 2012 11:34:27:923AM1120731008Jerry HughesShot 8.

Granetz has been in to zap F12.

Change:

Increase PG4 pre-puff form 15ms to 16ms.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 11:18:36.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Pretty early disruption, well before RF.
H/(H+D) remains high. (near 30% even with no RF)

Jul 31 2012 11:50:53:440AM1120731009Jerry HughesShot 9.

No PO changes.

Result: Basically a repeat of 8, with the disruptiojn in the same place.
Vertical control is getting lost right as the plasma comes off the inner wall.
Not clear why. The shape is not too abnormal and the n/ncrit is 0.85.

Jul 31 2012 11:58:54:260AM1120731010Jerry HughesShot 10.

Changes:

In seg 4, slow down ZCUR, RXL ramps between 0.24s and 0.4s.
Also hold CLEARIN fixed at 0.005 until 0.45s.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 11:49:10.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: runs into vertical control issues even earlier. Disrupts again.
Jul 31 2012 12:31:45:357PM1120731011Jerry HughesShot 11.

Let's try to reproduce a good shot from July 25 (EDA H-modes)

Import seg 2 from 1120725009 into seg 2.
Turn off seg 4 and turn ON seg2.
Change PG1 program in Seg 2 to be on for 50ms at 100V starting at 0.3s.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 12:02:37.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

results: Disrupts later. Still thrashing at segment switch.

Jul 31 2012 12:44:22:950PM1120731012Jerry HughesShot 12.

Change:
In seg 1, change BR_0 offset from 0.001 to 0.002, at Wolfe's suggestion.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 12:22:20.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Fizzle. Fields look okay, but are they correct?

It turns out that we have a new issue, spotted again by Wolfe,
whereby the OH2L power supply voltage reads differently from the bus voltage.
Cochran is in to diagnose and fix.

Jul 31 2012 12:54:58:280PM1120731013Jerry HughesShot 13.

Bill Cochran has returned from the power room. We will retry.

Change:
Reverse the BR_0 offset. 0.002-->0.001.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 12:50:54.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Full length plasma!
Jul 31 2012 01:25:59:767PM1120731014Jerry HughesShot 14

Change: in seg 2, change RXL from 0.000 to -0.005

Load at 31-Jul-2012 13:06:50.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Other changes: More joules from RF.

Result: Disrupt at 1.5s. Very ugly plasma with bad RF absorption.

We are still suspicous about the amount of H in the plasma.
Ron will purge both B-top and B-side and refill with D2 before next shot.

Jul 31 2012 01:45:15:403PM1120731015Jerry HughesShot 15.

In seg 2 change RXL from -0.005 to -0.010 .

Load at 31-Jul-2012 13:30:23.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Plasma into rampdown. H-modes.

Jul 31 2012 02:01:19:260PM1120731016Jerry HughesShot 16.

H/D continues to track the main gas puff.
Ron is doing a 2nd purge and refill with D2.
We will take a gas test shot next and look at the RGA.

In seg 1 set PG3 to 100V for 120ms

Load at 31-Jul-2012 13:51:26.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

No power shot. Disable everything but B-main.

Result: RGA reads out mostly 4, some 3 and 2. Looks like a proper D2 fill

Jul 31 2012 02:37:26:007PM1120731017Jerry HughesShot 17.

Delay due to breaker replacement (fast!).

Load from 1120731015.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 14:03:52.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Plasma into rampdown. Some power from D+E (FMIT3 was down)
A little extra B-side gas comes in at ~1s.
H/D definitely does not correlate with the main fueling puff now.
Perhaps the 2nd purge was what was needed.

Jul 31 2012 02:51:39:500PM1120731018Jerry HughesShot 18

J-port will take some time to fix, so we will proceed with D+E.

Go back to JFT-2M shape.
Turn OFF seg 2, turn ON seg 4.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 14:39:52.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Plasma into rampdown. Many H-modes.

Jul 31 2012 03:12:18:967PM1120731019Jerry HughesShot 19.

No PO changes.

Result: Somewhat improved power, some longer H-modes.
Still have Fe injections, which seems to be associated with the slot.

H/(H+D) is down to the 15% level throughout the shot.

Jul 31 2012 03:20:48:417PM1120731020Jerry HughesShot 20.

Changes:
Sweep RXL through flattop from -0.02 to -0.03.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 15:10:06.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Plasma into rampdown. Multiple H-modes. Bad matching on RF.

Jul 31 2012 03:35:22:393PM1120731021Jerry HughesShot 21.

Want to get back to the original JFT-2M target with 2cm. No RXL sweep.
This may provide a steadier target for the ICRF.

Import seg 4 from 1120731004 into seg 4.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 15:25:30.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: The changes weren't very helpful. Still a large number of H-modes,
radiative.

Jul 31 2012 03:48:51:687PM1120731022Jerry HughesShot 22.

After a high-level strategy meeting, we have decided to just switch to RF/wall
conditioning, since the H/D is showing positive signs of decrease. We will
try to maximize the number of Js in from D+E by running a more standard shape.

Turn OFF seg4 and turn ON seg2.
Import seg2 from 1120731013 into seg2.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 15:39:01.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Good steady RF. L-mode most of the way, short H-mode.
H/(H+D)~12%. Heating is imporving.

Jul 31 2012 04:10:06:440PM1120731023Jerry HughesShot 23.

Changes:

In seg 2 raise nl04 from 9.5e19 to 10.5e19.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 15:51:57.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Target nl04 looks good. Plasma just into rampdown. H/(H+D) down to ~11%.

Jul 31 2012 04:25:01:700PM1120731024Jerry HughesShot 24.

Inserted a ZCUR ramp from -0.01 to 0.00 and back during flattop.
This should sweep SSEP toward and perhaps through 0.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 16:09:29.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: More H-modes. This is the double null effect.

Jul 31 2012 04:37:53:290PM1120731025Jerry HughesShot 25

Removed the ZCUR ramp in seg2 and lowered DC ZCUR by 2mm.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 16:22:40.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Mostly L-mode. H/(H+D) down to ~8--9%. Looks like we may be able to stop
at 5pm.

Jul 31 2012 04:50:20:550PM1120731026Jerry HughesShot 26.

Try to run a mostly USN case.
In seg2, raise ZCUR from -0.012 to +0.005

Load at 31-Jul-2012 16:36:07.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: Biased slightly USN, so we get some flux on the upper plate,
but we still get an H/(H+D). Looks like it's up again slightly.

Jul 31 2012 05:01:11:313PM1120731027Jerry HughesShot 27.

In seg2 raise nl04 from 1.05e20 to 1.15e20.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 16:51:16.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: H/(H+D) looks very manageable. There is heating.

Jul 31 2012 05:18:42:807PM1120731028Jerry HughesShot 28.

Changes:
Put ZCUR back at -0.012 to go LSN again.
Also add anegative ramp to RXL and ZXL throughout flattop.

Load at 31-Jul-2012 17:00:49.00
Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

Result: H/(H+D) is between 5 and 8%.
