MP648: Direct Boron Density Asymmetry Measurements

Session Leader Plans
Entered: Aug 2 2012 09:32:47:173AM
Author: Mike Churchill
This run will combine parts from MP648: Direct Boron Density Asymmetry Measurements and MP 718: The effect of poloidally-localized sources on in-out density asymmetries.
For MP648, the goal is to vary collisionality and gradient scale lengths to vary the density asymmetry. Today, this will focus on EDA and ELM-free H-modes, as was 1120621, but with improved gap scans and different photodiodes at the HFS, to improve the HFS density profiles.
For MP718, the goal is to change plasma conditions so as to determine how a poloidally-localized impurity source affects the in-out density asymmetry

Required Diagnostics and Setup
edge CXRS
Both NINJA plenums will be filled with D2.
Chromex will be setup to view A-side, to monitor B and D recycling from the inner-wall
edge Thomson

Auxilary Systems
Ne seeding will be used

Part 0: Boronization recovery (4 shots, attempt Part 1 during this)

Part 1: Ip and RF scan in EDA H-mode (3 shots + 2 shots buffer) MP648
EDA H-mode (reference shot 1120725004, have to change Ip and nl04).
Set L-gap target to 6mm. Sweep L-gap (keep R-gap fixed) from 6mm to 11mm from 0.9s-1.1s, and then 11mm to 6mm from 1.2s-1.4s. These sweeps are critical for the success of the run, as they fill in the HFS density profiles.
1. Ip=1.0MA, nl04=1.0, RF=2MW, step to 4MW at 1.1s
2. Ip=0.6MA, nl04=0.6, RF=2MW, step to 4MW at 1.1s
3. Ip=0.8MA, nl04=0.8, RF=2MW, step to 4MW at 1.1s

Part 2: SSEP sweeps (6 shots)
EDA H-mode, Ip=0.8 MA, nl04=0.7, RF=3MW (reference shot 1080125013) MP718
Magnetic topology:
1. Start in LSN (SSEP = -1 [cm])
2. Sweep from LSN to DN from 0.85 to 1.0s
3. Stay in DN from 1.0s to 1.2s (SSEP = 0 [cm])
4. Sweep from DN to USN from 1.2 to 1.35s
5. Stay in USN till the end of the shot (SSEP = 0.3 [cm])
Modify sweep or NINJA puffs as needed.

Part 3: L-gap scan (4 shots)
EDA H-mode, use a good shot from Part 1 MP718
Sweep the L-gap from 14mm to 2mm from 0.8 to 1.5s. Adjust NINJA puffs as needed.
May also try shots with fixed L-gap of 2mm, then 14mm, if first part successful.

Part 4: Ip and RF scan in ELM-free H-mode (3 shots + 2 shots buffer) MP648
Use reference shot from Part 1, same gap changes.
1. Ip=0.8MA, nl04=0.6, RF=2MW
2. Ip=1.0MA, nl04=0.8, RF=2.5MW
3. Ip=1.2MA, nl04=1.0, RF=3MW

Part 5: USN EDA H-modes (optional) MP648
If time remains, attempt USN EDA H-modes, matching parameters from the best shots of Part 1

NOTE: The N2 injection part of MP718 will be run in extra innings of a run day which has nitrogen seeding already

Physop plan:
-------------
Load prepared shot 1120803000, including first shot of SL step 1:
Ip and RF scan in EDA H-mode in seg2 and the SSEP scan in seg3
Decide whether to update seg1 to a shot from 1120802xxx

Part 1:
1. Starting with Ip=1.0, nl04=1.0 case, RF=2MW, 4MW
tweak gap scans as requested, probably take a few shots for RF tuning
May need to increase nl04 to get EDA. Get one shot without neon before
turning on B-side Lower.
2. Go to Ip=0.6, nl04=0.6 case, same RF. High power phase may have bad
interaction with limiters and antenna, may need to tune (or tone down)
3. Go to Ip=0.8, nl04=0.8

Part 2: SSEP sweeps
Turn on seg3, from 1080125013 as modified.
Adjust to suit SL
May want to modify PG1 (Neon) puff

Part 3: L-gap scan
Back to seg2 or reload a seg2 from part 1
Change clearin sweep to go from 14mm to 2mm from 0.85 to 1.5sec
Adjust RCUR to maintain constant outer gap
SL_PLAN says "May also try shots with fixed L-gap of 2mm, then 14mm"

Part 4: Repeat gap scans of part 1, but with nl04 lower to get ELM-free H-modes.
Disable neon puff (PG1). Targets are
1. Ip=0.8, nl04=0.6, RF=2
2. Ip=1.0, nl04=0.8, RF=2.5
3. Ip=1.2, nl04=1.0, RF=3.0

Part 5: USN EDA H-modes (optional)
Reference shot could be 1070614013 (600kA, uses a zcur sweep)
or 1070816024 (400kA, nl04=0.7, RF 3-4MW, static USN) but that is very
low current for such high power. Or maybe use one of the step 2 cases.
We'll see if we get this far.

Rough day.
alcdaq was down for the first half, until around 1pm, at which time the run started.
For Part 1.1 (1MA EDA H-mode), we spent a good amount of time on tuning the RF up, and tweaking the gap scans (along the way adding Ne seeding). We ended up increasing the density to nl04 1.2, at which point we got a very nice shot in 11. Along the way, we had several ELM-free H-modes, which will probably serve to accomplish Part 4.2.
Moving to Part 1.2 (0.6MA EDA H-mode), we ran into problems with the plasma bouncing off the inner-wall, presumably due to cross-over issues and the L-gap being small for better CXRS coverage. After Steve tuned things up, we had a good shot in 14, though the CXRS shutter was drifting, meaning there will be smearing on Photon1 (which has the LFS periscopes), and may ruin the during-the-shot neon calibration.
Our last shot we got a nice 0.8MA EDA H-mode.

Physop summary for Friday, 3-Aug-2012
MP#648 Boron Asymmetry measurements
SL: Churchill
PO: wolfe
EO: Pierson, Byford

We lost over half the day to a network problem that
took out our connection to the data server alcdaq3.
Heroic efforts by Josh finally got us back on the air at 13:45
We then managed to get through Part 1 of the run plan,
the current and rf power scan in EDA H-modes. It took
a while to get the rf working smoothly, and we had to make
some tweaks to the gap scan. We ended up using neon puffing
at 35% from 0.4 to 0.6sec, which seemed to help. We lost one
shot to an iron injection at 0.5sec, and several shots had
either Mo or Fe injections.

The 600kA case proved problematic because OH1 crossover happened
at 0.9sec, right on top of the gap scan. This caused the inner
gap to go to zero. I never managed to get this fixed, despite
using the oh1_crossover procedure to speed up the transition,
increasing the IP gain earlier in flattop,
and counter-programming the clearin. Finally we just moved on
to the 800kA case for the last shot, and got it in one, despite
a Mo injection early in the H-mode. We ended up using
nl04 program of 1.2,0.7, and 1.0e20 for 1,0.6,0.8MA, respectively.
Lower nl04 target resulted in ELM-free H-modes at 1MA, which might
contrihute to part 4.

This is the second run this week to be savaged by the OH1 crossover
thrash. I need to look at a better compensation scheme. The problem
seems to happen more at the end of the dead time than during it, so
maybe the strategy needs to be modified to change what the other
supplies are doing at that time.

Physics Operator Comments

Begin setup for Friday's run, following posted SL_PLAN as amended
in emails from SL.

Load from 1120725004, EDA H-mode shot with Ne seeding from Matt's run last week.
Seg2 is active, seg4 is locked mode (seg 3 zeroed).

Check call dates on mag predictors. Looks like seg1 could be stale:
ZCUR call dates are "Before Dec 2, 2011" and RCUR (offset=3000) "Before Dec 6"
BR_0 is also "Before Dec 2". Last hyb-config date is Dec 5, 2011, and is for
BTOR_PICKUP, which won't matter for BR_0 since it doesn't use Bp loops.
Go ahead and call them, look to see if Btor coeff changes.
Rcur didn't change from 156.755, remembered to put back the offset=3000.
ZCUR2 didn't change either, still -1299.24. This seems to be a no-op, not
sure why the call time looks old. Don't bother with the rest in seg1.
Seg2 call times are all from last week Jul 24, 2012. Good to go. Time to
look at the programming.

First shot for Friday wants Ip=1.0MA, nl04=1.0e20. Density is already there,
change the Ip from 800kA. The big change is the gap behavior. On this shot,
left gap was 15mm, right gap 13mm. SL wants an initial lgap=6mm, with sweeps
of left and right during the pulse. I think he wants right gap to start as is(?)
The idea is to keep minor radius constant, so sweep rcur out along with lgap,
and vice versa. This is likely to make it tough for the RF match, but that's
their problem.

CLEARIN from .004 to -.005
RCUR from [.662,.661] to [.6575,.6565]
Sweep CLEARIN from -.005 to 0. from t=0.9 to 1.1sec
and from 0. to -.005 at t=[1.2,1.4]
Sweep RCUR from .65699 to .6568+.005=.6618 at [0.9,1.1]
and back to .6566 from 1.2 to 1.4sec

Next bring in the "ssep" vertical sweeps from 1080125013 into seg3.
Check on which seg was active, using traverser. I need to put something into
PCS to do this in a more convenient manner. It's seg2, so import it.
Recalculate mag predictors; note two active rows in the clearin.
Turn off seg2, on seg3, and build_all (both to check the setup and make
sure all the builds and timestamps are updated). No warnings, completes in
6 sec. Seg3 off, Seg2 back on, and continue making adjustments in seg3.

This is a 3-step zcur sequence, with no corresponding ZXL, ZXU steps, to
accomplish the "SSEP" sweep from LSN -> DN -> USN without using SSEP control.
SL wants 0.8MA, nl04=0.7; the ref shot is nl04=0.6, so raise it.
There are unused ssep wires on 11 and 12, with waveforms, so just for fun
set these to zero so I can watch the phys_a_out.
SL_Plan changes the timing of the steps: LSN to DN (i.e. ZCUR -.014 to -.007)
from t=[.85,1.0] and DN to USN (ZCUR=[-.007,-.001]) from t=[1.2,1.35]. These
were [.7,.85] and [1.1,1.2], respectively. The clearin ref change was at t=1.15,
so I need to move that to 1.25.

Now to look at the all_V's in seg2. Matt is recommending Neon in B-side Lower
at 3psi, with a 40% puff; timing in ref shot is t=[.4,.6]; leave that.
Argon in H-bot will be set at 100% from .3 to .33 (was lt 100, for 50msec).
TF is at 150kA.

NL04 gain in seg 2 has P=9 dropping to 8, but D=3 only from [.1,.5], no idea
why. Raise D to 9 for whole shot. I may want to reduce the P gain if it's
oscillating.

NL04 gain in seg3 is P=9, D=0; raise to D=9 here also.
Copy PG1 and PG4 traces from seg2 to seg3. Remove pg2 and AMHD traces in seg3
Note that there is a pg3 feedforward in seg3; leave it for now

Do another build_all with seg2
Seg2 off, seg3 on, build_all
Seg2 on, seg3 off.
Save as /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/ shot#1120803000

Aug 2 2012 12:08:56:697PMSteve Wolfe
Re-doing the setup for tomorrow's run, after revisions to the
SL_PLAN. In part 1, he now wants the outer gap kept constant,
rather than sweeping, in order to keep the ICRF coupling better
matched; probably a good idea.

Change seg2 rcur points at t=[1.1,1.2] from .6618 to .6594, trying to
keep outer gap fixed.

In seg3, SL prefers the inner gap to be near 6mm, compared to reference
shot#1080125013 which starts around 17mm. Clearin in the ref is
+.003, so I would want to reduce this by 10mm t0 -.007, reduce RCUR by 5mm.
However, the seg2 case is trying to get this location with CLEARIN=-.005,
so I'll start with this setting. That makes a change of -8mm in clearin,
so I should reduce RCUR by -.004, from .6589 to .6549, mostly; move them
all in by 4mm.

I think that's all the pcs changes at this point, so do another save
to /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/ shot#1120803000
