Session leader plan for run 1120808 (Wednesday, August 8, 2012)
MP 713: "Impurity Transport in H-Modes of Varying Collisionality"

The objective of this run is to explore the transport of injected CaF2 in a variety of EDA H-mode conditions.

Basic Conditions:
B=5.4T
Main species: D2

Required Diagnostics:
CaF2 LBO
HiReX-SR with Ca crystal, set for 6ms time resolution
XEUS
LoWEUS
HiReX-JR (core view of 3.177 angstrom line)
Thomson scattering
(fast) TCI
ECE (all systems)

Desired Diagnostics:
PCI (core turbulence)
CECE
fluctuation reflectometry

Required Systems:
Cryopump
ICRF: all antennas, up to 4.5 MW available
Ar as needed by HiReX: <1psi in H-bottom
Ne in case we need seeding: 3psi in B-side lower
LH (maybe)

Shot Sequence:

Reference shape: 1101014019, but different target nL_04, current, and ICRF power as specified below.

Obtain TWO good shots at each condition before moving on. We are starting with the high currents in order to maximize benefit from the overnight boronization.

Order of power points to be dictated by ICRF post-boronization recovery.
Most likely will not want cryopump on the 1.0MA shots as per Jerry Hughes' advice. This will be determined depending on how steady-state the EDA H-mode is.

1.) Ip=1.0MA, P_ICRF=2.5MW, nL_04=1.0e20m^-2, injections at 0.9s, 1.2s (and possibly 1.3s or 1.4s to get more statistics on rise)
2.) Ip=1.0MA, P_ICRF=4MW, nL_04=1.0e20m^-2, injections at 0.9s, 1.2s (and possibly 1.3s or 1.4s to get more statistics on rise)
(perform power scan between those two conditions as needed for boronization recovery to obtain a steady-state discharge)

3.) Locked mode as per HiReX requirements: reference 1120626029, SET H-BOTTOM TO 100% (revert to conventional HiReX setting after shot)

4.) Ip=750kA, P_ICRF=2.5MW, nL_04=0.75e20m^-2, injections at 0.9s, 1.2s (and possibly 1.3s or 1.4s to get more statistics on rise)
5.) Ip=750kA, P_ICRF=4MW, nL_04=0.75e20m^2, injections at 0.9s, 1.2s (and possibly 1.3s or 1.4s to get more statistics on rise)

At this point we will need to carefully consider the limiter heating from condition 5 before moving on to the next conditions. Should the limiter heating be found to be too high, need to decide on higher current and/or lower powers for next two conditions.

6.) Ip=400kA, P_ICRF=2.5MW, nL_04=0.6e20m^-2 (this target density chosen based on 1100305022), injections at 0.9s, 1.1s and 1.3s
7.) Ip=400kA, P_ICRF=4MW, nL_04=0.6e20m^-2, injections at 0.9s, 1.1s and 1.3s
(perform power scan between those two conditions as needed to inspect effect on limiter heating when approaching the high-power point)

8.) Repeat locked mode: reference 1120626029, SET H-BOTTOM TO 100% (revert to conventional HiReX setting after shot)

With two of each condition obtained plus two locked modes, this plan comprises 14 desired shots.

Session leader summary for run 1120808 (Wednesday, August 8, 2012)
MP 713: "Impurity Transport in H-Modes of Varying Collisionality"

The objective of this run was to explore the transport of injected CaF2 in a variety of EDA H-mode conditions.

Overall, this was a pretty smooth run: 34 plasma attempts, only 4 fizzles. Post-boronization recovery took a bit longer than was hoped, but things ran pretty well once we came down from the 1 MA shots.

We obtained H-mode plasmas with currents ranging from 1 MA down to 430 kA. As was anticipated, there was quite a bit of limiter heating at the 430 kA, 2.5 MW case. Switching to 470 kA with 1.5 MW and not using J antenna enabled us to get some pretty good shots with acceptable limiter heating. We ended up with enough shots left to add an intermediate current point in addition to the three originally planned, and used the last two shots to perform a small neon puffing scan at this current in order to vary the collisionality through Z_eff.

Shots that seem to pass the first cut for usefulness for detailed analysis:
009 (1MA, 2.5MW)
014 (0.95MA, 4MW)
018 (750kA, 2.5MW)
019 (750kA, 2.5MW)
021 (750kA, 4MW)
024 (470kA, 2MW)
025 (470kA, 1.5MW)
026 (470kA, 1.5MW)
028 (600kA, 2.5MW)
030 (600kA, 2.5MW)
031 (600kA, 4MW)
033 (600kA, 3MW)
034 (600kA, 4MW)

Run summary for Wednesday 2012/08/08

MP713 - Impurity transport in H-modes of varying collisionality

Session leader: M. Chilenski
Physics operator: R. Granetz

The goals of today's run were to have steady EDA H-modes in
nearly-double-null plasmas and several different plasma currents. Since
there is an empirical proportional link between the plasma and the density
for achieving EDA H-modes, the scan of Ip values also entailed a scan of
densities. The ICRF power was also varied at each condition. So the
different densities and RF power effectively gave a scan of collisionality
in EDA H-modes. CaF2 was injected multiple times during each discharge in
order to measure the impurity transport as the collisionality was varied.
The machine ran quite well. There were no significant problems with power
supplies, computers, or the tokamak. The DNB also began operating again
today, although it was not fired into plasmas.

Scorecard: 30 plasmas
            0 duds
4 fizzles (2 due to cryopump issues)
            0 power supply tests
            0 no-power MDSplus cycle tests
            0 no-power gas test

Physics Operator Comments
Aug 8 2012 08:50:36:230AMRobert Granetz
SL has decided that we do not want the cryopump for the 1 MA shots today, which includes the
start of the run. So no cryopump for shot 1. Therefore I have reloaded seg 1 with seg 1 from
1120807031 (a good startup from yesterday). PG4 pulse is 18 ms, rather than the 45 ms used in
the previously loaded cryopump startup.

Aug 8 2012 09:09:17:637AM1120808001Robert Granetz
Shot 01 -- Plasma, full length. 1.0 MA, 5.4 T, 1.0e20 m-2 (target), SNL then DN, Prf=0.65 MW only
           nl_04=1.5e20 m-2 (too high...boronization recovery?)

Next shot: move ZCUR down by 5 mm

Aug 8 2012 09:26:28:793AM1120808002Robert Granetz
Shot 02 -- Plasma, full length. 1.0 MA, 5.4 T, 1.3e20 m-2, LSN (close to DN, as desired), Prf=1.4 MW.
Density is coming down on its own, but still needs to come down some more. J-port antenna
needs some more shots also for boronization recovery. CaF2 injections are at t=0.85 s and
           1.25 s.

Next shot: increase Ar puff to 50 ms (was 40 ms); increase Prf to 4 MW

Aug 8 2012 09:40:09:557AM1120808003Robert Granetz
Shot 03 -- Plasma. 1.0 MA. Disrupted in rampdown due to an injection. Went into H-mode at 0.7 s, but
a CaF2 injection at t=0.85 s dropped it out. Prf=1.1 MW, only E-port stayed on.
           nl_04=1.1e20 m-2 (target).

Next shot: no DPCS changes; repeat for RF conditioning; smaller CaF2 injection

Aug 8 2012 09:50:54:807AM1120808004Robert Granetz
Shot 04 -- Fizzle

Next shot: add -10 amps to IC_EF4; reduce pre-fill by 1 ms

Aug 8 2012 10:09:32:637AM1120808005Robert Granetz
Shot 05 -- Plasma, full length. 1.0 MA, 5.4 T, 1.1e20 m-2, H-mode, Prf=2.0 MW. The ICRF still needs
           more tuning/conditioning.

Next shot: repeat, no DPCS changes

Aug 8 2012 10:18:21:910AM1120808006Robert Granetz
Shot 06 -- Fizzle

Next shot: reduce early PG3 gas programming

Aug 8 2012 10:30:56:630AM1120808007Robert Granetz
Shot 07 -- Plasma, full length. 1.0 MA, 5.4 T, 1.1e20 m-2, LSN (nearly DN), Prf=3.7 MW, LBO w/CaF2.

Next shot: reduce Prf to 2.5 MW

Aug 8 2012 10:45:33:523AM1120808008Robert Granetz
Shot 08 -- Plasma, full length. 1.0 MA, 5.4 T, 1.1e20 m-2, LSN (nearly DN), Prf=2.5 MW, LBO w/CaF2.

Aug 8 2012 10:58:29:537AM1120808008Robert Granetz
Shot 09 -- Plasma, full length. 1.0 MA, 5.4 T, 1.1e20 m-2, LSN (nearly DN), Prf=2.5 MW, LBO w/CaF2.

Terrible startup...pre-fill pressure was way too low, even though the programmed pulse was
correct (17 ms). Cryopump was cooling down in preparation for shot 10, and it looks like
it actually started pumping on this shot.

Next shot: cryopump; set pre-fill pulse to 45 ms (was 17 ms)

Shot 12 -- Plasma, full length. 1.05 MA, 5.4 T, 1.1e20 m-2, LSN (nearly DN), Prf=2.5 MW, LBO w/CaF2.
           Cryopump startup.

Next shot: decrease Ip to 0.95 MA; increase nl_04 to 1.15e20 m-2; Prf will be 4 MW

Aug 8 2012 12:10:47:243PM1120808013Robert Granetz
Shot 13 -- Plasma, full length. 0.95 MA, 5.4 T, 1.15e20 m-2, LSN (nearly DN), Prf=4.0 MW, LBO w/CaF2.
           Cryopump startup.

Next shot: no changes

Aug 8 2012 12:23:00:230PM1120808014Robert Granetz
