MP667: Commissioning of new SOL probes

9:00-12:30, budgeting for maximum of 12 plasmas. Due to limited number of plasmas, unlikely to repeat shots.

The purpose of this run is to operate the new A-port scanning (ASP) retarding field analyzer (RFA) to measure ion and electron temperatures to the sepratrix. These will be used for comparison with (and hopefully validation of) ion temperature data with the ion sensitive probe (ISP). The ISP data covers a density scan at both 0.58 and 0.80 MA. There is already good data with the RFA at low densities and 0.8 MA.

Reload shot 1120726019, 0.58 MA, 0.4e20 m^-2. Target probes. Increase density by ~0.1e20 m^-2 per shot until at ~0.8e20 m^-2. (total ~6 shots)

Increase plasma current to 0.80 MA, decrease density to 0.7e20 m^-2. Target probes. Increase density by ~0.1e20 m^-2 per shot until time runs out. May take coarser density scan if time is running out. (total ~6 shots)

Hand over to LH. Will piggyback with RFA to look for changes to electron/ion distributions with/without LH.

CXRS will be puffing helium to get B+5 temperature profiles for comparison:
Fill NINJA plenum with 6 psi Helium DISABLED.

MP665: Field, current, and q dependence of LH density limit
SL: G. Wallace
PO: R. Parker

This will be the second attempt at MP665. The first attempt on 1120724 had difficulty getting to the desired low field conditions. Some data was obtained at 3 T, 0.55 MA and 4.1 T, 0.55 MA. This run will focus more on the low field, lower current discharges and try for some of the high field discharges as well.

LH Setup:
90 deg phasing, 150 kW/klystron, launcher at 1278.

Shot plan:
0) Load from 1120710020 (5.4 T, 550 kA, USN, no cryopump). Repeat as programmed with TS this time.
1) Load from 1120724012. Decrease Ip to 0.3 MA. Scan density from nl_04=4-8e19.
2) Repeat 1 at 0.4 MA.

3) Repeat 1 at 4.1 T, 0.3 MA.
4) Repeat 3 at 4.1 T, 0.4 MA.

5) Load from 1120727023 (6.3 T, 0.8 MA). Target nl_04 is 7e19. Note that target shot was in H with a He3 minority, so adjust density feedback and gas puffing accordingly. This shot will be to directly compare the H discharges from 1120727 with D discharges at the same Ip and Bt.

6) Repeat step 5 at 7 T, 0.8 MA.
7) Repeat step 5 at 7 T, 0.5 MA.
8) Repeat step 5 at 7 T, 1.1 MA.

Good run. Set out to get density scan at 0.58 and 0.80 MA and completed both. Nearly perfect shot performance. Only first shot disrupted, injection and slow death.

Got extra innings while LH sorted out trouble moving launcher in. Got two low density points at 1.2 and 1.1 MA. Far SOL only.

Now have RFA ion and electron temperature to compare to ISP. Unlike previous runs, there was no arcing or shots between the electrodes and ground between scans! The solution was complete coverage with mica. Mica tight through all of the corners and mica extending out past the electrodes. Although a new source of arcing is now differentiated: during the plasma scans. There were arcs during the first scans of the day, likely the grids cleaning up? Then there were arcs mainly during the first scan, ionizing the neutral gas built up between shots? Then there were arcs when scanned to at least a certain depth, too much plasma recycling inside the probe (something like this has been seen on other machines, e.g. JET's RFA RSI).

Time to polish up RFA analysis code and compare profiles to ISP.

A very interesting run today. We started at low field (3 and 3.9 T) and had not much success. We then went to higher fields (6.3 and 7 T) and had great success. Preliminary analysis shows non-trivial current drive at nebar = 1.1-1.3e20 at the higher fields and 800 kA! This result is very encouraging but also very confusing. Seung Gyou reports that PDI is stronger as compared to the 6.3 T H2 discharge, but current drive seems nearly identical. We will need to compare x-ray results with the old 7 T data from 2008, but this will require re-analyzing the 2008 HXR raw data with the latest analysis technique.

A good day!

Machine ran well and good progress was made toward the goals of both MP's

For MP667, Ohmic shots were run with currents ranging from 0.5 - 1.2 MA, and with density scans at each current. We took advantage of a delay inpreparing the LH system to extend this part of the run by 2 shots. All shots called for on the SL plan were run.

For MP665, we had difficulty running and coupling to a 3 T plasma, so we decided to move on to 4 T (actually 3.8 T). It wasn't perfect because LH was faulting but good enough to determine the "density limit". We then moved on to 6.3 T, where we found evidence of current drive up to n_bar = 1.3e20 m-3. We then ran a 7 T shot for comparison, and again found reduction of loop voltage at 1.3e20 m-3. we ran out of time for this part of the run and could use about 2 more hours to complete it. The remaining question is: is the higher "density limit" we seem to be finding with the USN plasmas due to q or field?

There were a couple of delays during the run, one due to problems in inserting the LH antenna, the other due to a drop of water pressure in the alternator house. Nevertheless we ran 31 shots most of which were useful.

Scorecard: 30 plasma attempts, one no power (water pressure), two disruptions before rampdown, one runaway shutdown, no fizzles (a robust startup!) and the rest full length.

Aug 9 2012 01:45:12:180PM1120809018Greg WallaceRunaway shutdown. First attempt at repeating shot 1120710020. Try again.
Aug 9 2012 02:08:12:157PM1120809019Greg WallaceRepeat attempt of shot 1120710020. Want 700 kW, 5.4 T, 550 kA, nebar=1.2e20.

Got 450 kW at 110 kW/klystron, 90 deg. Got other parameters right. One fault, possible breakdown on plasma side based on reflected power but nothing visible on cameras.

Next shot will repeat with 150 kW/klystron and reduce outer gap by 5 mm.
Aug 9 2012 02:19:35:967PM1120809020Greg WallaceThree early faults at 150 kW/klystron, 90 deg. Looks like could be plasma side breakdown on reflected power signals but nothing on camera.

Discharge nearly goes limited just before the LH pulse starts. Crossover problem?

Try one more time for this condition.
Aug 9 2012 02:38:38:193PM1120809021Greg WallaceOne fault early in the LH pulse at 150 kW/klystron. Change in outer gap did not come through.

Next shot will try again to repeat the same conditions as 1120710020, including longer LH pulse length (0.6-1.4 s) and outer gap reduced by 5 mm.
Aug 9 2012 02:49:17:797PM1120809022Greg WallaceSufficiently similar to shot 1120710020. One fault early when the plasma tries to go inner wall limited.

Next shot will move on to 3T, 300 kA with density ramp (step 1 of run plan). LH parameters will remain constant.
Aug 9 2012 03:08:11:437PM1120809023Greg WallaceShot cycle hung.
Aug 9 2012 03:32:26:607PM1120809024Greg WallacePoor LH coupling. Disruption at 1.15 s. Plasma does not look very good.

Next shot will move on to step 4, 4.1 T, 0.4 MA.
Aug 9 2012 03:45:24:807PM1120809025Greg WallaceField a little lower than expected (3.75 vs 4.1 T). Lots of tripping, looks like it might be due to breakdown on the vacuum side?

Next shot will repeat with lower LH power (120 kW/klystron) to try to keep it from arcing(?).
Aug 9 2012 03:55:03:683PM1120809026Greg WallaceMany faults again, but a little better. Perhaps the outer gap is too small at the higher density and that is causing the breakdown on the plasma side? Next shot will ramp RCUR by 5 mm between 0.6 and 1.4 s.
Aug 9 2012 04:11:20:413PM1120809027Greg WallaceLH coupling better now, but still not great. Outer gap scan seemed to help. Next shot will go on to step 5 (6.3 T, 800 kA; repeat of 1120727023).
Aug 9 2012 04:32:45:513PM1120809028Greg WallaceGood shot! Clean LH pulse. Next shot will repeat at higher power (170 kW/klystron) and decrease pulse length (0.8-1.3 s) to better match 1120727023.
Aug 9 2012 04:40:58:327PM1120809029Greg WallaceClean LH pulse at 170 kW/klystron, 90 deg, 6.3 T, 800 kA! Vloop changes almost exactly the same as shot 1120727023!!! Next shot will repeat with a density scan.
Aug 9 2012 04:57:52:073PM1120809030Greg WallaceAnother good shot! Still driving current! Not a huge density ramp but we will move on and try for one shot at 7 T, otherwise same conditions as shot 29.
Aug 9 2012 05:15:46:960PM1120809031Greg WallaceAnother good shot. 7T, clean LH. Last shot of the day. Still looks like some current drive. Very confused.

This comletes Dan Brunner's par of the run (MP667)

We will now begin with the MP665 part of the run, with Greg Wallace as SL.

The first shot will be loaded from 1120710020
Aug 9 2012 01:10:06:380PM1120809015Ron ParkerWe're having trouble moving the LH launcher in. So while this is being worked on (out of the cell!), we'll resume Dan's run.

Beging by loading a 1.1 MA, nlo4 ~ 0.6e20 m-2
Aug 9 2012 01:23:52:800PM1120809016Ron ParkerShot 16 ran full elngth, first shot at 1.1 MA in Dan's run

Oops, make that 1.2 MA (but it should have been 1.1 MA, which will nbe programmed of next shot.)
Aug 9 2012 01:39:15:057PM1120809017Ron ParkerShot 17 ran full length.

LH launcher is fixed and in position. we'll start now on MP 665 beginning with a 5.4 T shot, 1120710020.
Aug 9 2012 01:49:50:550PM1120809018Ron ParkerRunaway shutdown. We attempted to go USN which may have cleaned the upper divertor. Try again with 5 ms more prefill
Aug 9 2012 02:21:14:383PM1120809019Ron ParkerShot 19 came back, ran full length and had LH

Next: same shot, increase LH power, and reduce outer gap by 1 cm
Aug 9 2012 02:23:17:967PM1120809020Ron ParkerShot 20 ran full length, same outer gap, so the R_cur change must not have been loaded.

Try again, decreasing outer gap by 1 cm, hopefully
Aug 9 2012 03:01:41:120PM1120809021Ron ParkerShot 21 ran full length, same as 20
Aug 9 2012 03:00:07:250PM1120809022Ron ParkerShot 22 ran with reduced outer gap, more or less reproducung 1120710020.

Now we'll move on to lower field as described on the runplan, starting with
1120724012 but with a density ramp and I_p = 300 kA
Aug 9 2012 03:05:09:140PM1120809023Ron ParkerShot 23 was a no power shot, water pressure in the alternator supply had dropped and forced a trip
Aug 9 2012 03:08:53:540PM1120809023Ron ParkerThere are stillproblems in the alternator house -- alternator is not ramping up
Aug 9 2012 03:58:54:080PM1120809024Ron ParkerShot 24 ran (300 kA, 3 T) but disrupted around 1.15 s.

Rather than tune this shot, we'll start with shots at ~ 4 T

Aug 9 2012 03:39:25:637PM1120809025Ron ParkerShot 25 ran full length, 400 kA, 3.8 T

Good shot, but LH keeps tripping
Aug 9 2012 03:59:51:200PM1120809026Ron ParkerShot 26 ran FL, but LH still tripping
Aug 9 2012 04:26:52:957PM1120809027Ron ParkerShot 27 ran fulllength. LH better with an R_cur sweep, but still faulting
Aug 9 2012 04:25:40:563PM1120809028Ron ParkerShot 28 ran full length and seems to have some current drive at 1.3e20
Aug 9 2012 04:43:34:473PM1120809029Ron ParkerShot 29 ran FL. Good LH pulse, clear heating and current drive
Aug 9 2012 05:17:12:407PM1120809031Ron ParkerFull length. Good LH pulse, and clear falloff of LH efficiency at 6.9 T.
