The run was overall successful.
We marched through the run plan. The day started with good EDA-H modes during which the ASP probe was scanned and dwelled (near the limiter). We also obtained good fluctuation data with both GPI systems, and reflectometer. During the EDA-M mode part of the run plan, we conditioned the LH antenna to observe the density pumpout at the pedestal. This was no successful. The LH was kept in order to get fluctuation suppression data. Part II of the run plan started with a scan in density to decrease the collisionality. At nl04 = 0.5, and with reduced ICRF power, we observed ELMs. The remainder of the run day focused on slowing down the ELM frequency for both good profile reconstructions and enough time resolution to characterize the inter-ELM fluctuations. We used all the tricks in the bag with no success. This was made difficult as the wall condition deteriorated toward the end of the day. Overall, we accumulated enough data for analysis of the pedestal evolution.

Today's run was very successful. C-Mod and all subsystems were operating properly. 34 shot cycles, 32 plasmas, and two fizzles. The first fizzle was fixed by reducing the early PG4 puff, and the second was corrected by undoing the first fix. PG4 puffs were at 18 ms for shots 1-2 and 8-34 and 16 ms for shots 3-7. We were running the JFT2M all day and had many discharges with ELMs. The first few shots had a very good confinement mode around 1.3 s as the outer divertor leg hit the shelf, but this behaviour disappeared with no input from the physop.

Aug 15 2012 07:59:53:333AMAhmed DialloShot plan:

I. Load from 1120621025.
Apply ICRF 3 MW from 0.6 until end of discharge.
Adjust ICRF between 2 -3 MW to insure good coupling
Achieve EDA-H mode with JFT-2M shape (3-6 shots)
Dwell the magnetic probes (start time tbd)
Verify passive diagnostics (shoelace antenna)

II. Establish a good baseline for the fluctuations diagnostics
CXRS
GPI start puff at 1.2 s
Plunge probe at 1.2 s (this will be determined on the shot to shot basis)

III. Start LH (700 kW) at 1.0 s (2 shots)
Stop gas puffs and probe plunges to achieve a LH base case
If successful
Initiate probe plunges at different times (TBD)
Start GPI

IV. Start density scan
nl04 = 0.9 to 0.5 in steps of 0.1 (2 shots each)
Find a suitable ELMy H-mode through this scan
Repeat at constant ICRF
Try LH (700 kW) at 1.0 s (if time permitting)
Make sure all the fluctuations diagnostics have good data
(SL will direct changes to ICRF, LHRF programs, puff timing for NINJA based diagnostics)

Aug 15 2012 12:54:16:687PM1120815017Jerry HughesI am filling in as SL while Ahmed has a conference call.

Shot 17 will be a locked-mode calibration shot for hirexsr.

Aug 15 2012 01:42:30:703PM1120815018Jerry HughesShot 18.

Repeat shot 16 with a lower initial RF power.

Result: Looks like some ELMS.
Some nice modes visible on the ASP mag head.

Aug 15 2012 01:40:27:457PM1120815019Jerry HughesShot 19

Excellent. Steady phase with with somewhat irregular ELMs form 0.8 to 0.95s.
An ok phase from 1.05 to 1.15.

Got ASP plunges, 1 pre-ELMs and 2 after ELMs begin.

Confinement degrades and ELMs disappear around the time of the He NINJA puff.
JT didn't get data, so we will try again.

No LH.
Aug 15 2012 01:46:28:250PM1120815020Jerry HughesShot 20.

Very nice regular ELMy period obtained with only 2MW ICRF from about 0.8 to 1.0s.

Aug 15 2012 02:40:08:390PM1120815021Jerry HughesShot 21

Made RF constant at 2MW throughout flattop.

Good long ELMy H-mode, variable ELM frequency.

He puff raises density late.

Aug 15 2012 02:51:11:683PM1120815022Jerry HughesShot 22

RF still constant at 2MW throughout flattop.

Good long ELMy H-mode, variable ELM frequency.

He + D2 puff this time, larger density rise.

Aug 15 2012 02:52:41:547PM1120815023Jerry HughesShot 23

RF still constant at 2MW throughout flattop.

Long ELMy H-mode, very fast ELMs. D2 puff only with reduced density rate of
rise. ELMs sustained, and perhaps slowed by the density rise.

ASP is in dwell mode. Getting good data.

Aug 15 2012 03:03:42:667PM1120815024Jerry HughesShot 24

RF still constant at 2MW throughout flattop.

Nice long ELM period between 0.72 and 0.76, with 3 Thomson points included.

A D2 puff was added at 0.72s. H-mode is killed too soon.
Aug 15 2012 03:06:25:807PM1120815025Jerry HughesShot 25

Attempted to add some feedback to control the density in H-mode, and
continued with D2 from NINJA.

RF faulting early. Density is not well controlled. Good ELMs early.

Aug 15 2012 03:38:00:520PM1120815026Ahmed DialloChanged the density programming to be 0.7
Results:
Fast ELMs

Aug 15 2012 03:39:29:273PM1120815027Ahmed DialloModulate ICRF to get three H-modes

Good good ELMs in the second phase

Aug 15 2012 03:51:27:337PM1120815028Ahmed DialloRepeat with three H-mode phases

Results:
Second ICRF phase has two good ELMs
Not so great!

Aug 15 2012 05:14:18:900PM1120815029Ahmed DialloExtend the second ICRF until the 1.5s
Puff He and D2 at 1.2s

Good but not enough ELMs

Aug 15 2012 05:16:06:150PM1120815030Ahmed Dialloadding a ramp to 4 MW on the ICRF at 1.1

Results:
Yet not able to reduce the ELM frequency

Aug 15 2012 05:18:30:223PM1120815031Ahmed DialloExtend the ICRF through the discharge starting at 0.6s
Add the ramp to 4 MW at 1.1s

Result;
Occurrence of ELMs
with slight reduction of frequency during the ramp up

result:
very small and very fast ELMs
Aug 15 2012 05:21:19:783PM1120815033Ahmed DialloExtend the LH

Result:
Too many trips
Few grassy ELMs around 0.6s

Few good ELMs

Physics Operator Comments
Aug 15 2012 09:18:20:460AM1120815001Greg WallaceChanges: Load seg 1 from 1120810018 (2012 non-cryopump startup) into seg 1 ON.
Load seg 4 from 1120621025 (0.9 MA JFT2M) into seg 2 ON. Increase NL_04 demand to 1e20.
Load seg 3 from 1120807033 (0.8 MA LSN locked mode) into seg 3 OFF.

Result: Plasma through rampdown. Startup looks OK. Strange "transition" from H-mode to better H-mode at 1.3 s.

Next shot: Enable 50 ms PG1 Ar puff. Otherwise repeat.
Aug 15 2012 09:26:53:560AM1120815002Greg WallaceChanges: Enable 50 ms PG1 Ar puff. Otherwise repeat.

Result: Fizzle. Lots of CIII emission starting at 10 ms. F-side pressure is 25% higher than shot 1.

Next shot: Reduce early PG4 puff from 18 to 16 ms.
Aug 15 2012 09:42:15:093AM1120815003Greg WallaceChanges: Reduce early PG4 puff from 18 to 16 ms.

Result: Plasma. Still have sudden increase in confinement around 1.3 s as outer leg of x-point hits the inner divertor shelf.

Next shot: Repeat. No DPCS changes.
Aug 15 2012 09:55:39:727AM1120815004Greg WallaceChanges: Repeat. No DPCS changes.

Result: Plasma. Current ramp is a little slow starting at ~12 ms. No increase in confinement at 1.3 s this time---seems to be correlated with the outer leg not hitting the shelf as it did in the earlier shots?

Next shot: Repeat. No DPCS changes.
Aug 15 2012 10:10:00:660AM1120815005Greg WallaceChanges: Repeat. No DPCS changes.

Result: Plasma. Still some hesitation in the current ramp at ~15 ms. Will keep watching for now. Again the confinement drops at ~1.2 s and outer divertor leg does not hit the shelf until ~1.5 s. No programmed changes in RXL or ZXL during flat top. Suspect the scanning probes may be the source of the problem.

Next shot: Repeat without second scanning probe plunge. No DPCS changes.
Aug 15 2012 10:29:23:880AM1120815006Greg WallaceChanges: Repeat without second scanning probe plunge. No DPCS changes.

Result: Plasma. Still have problem with confinement decreasing at 1.24 s.

Next shot: No DPCS changes. Add LH from 0.98 to 1.48 s.
Aug 15 2012 11:39:31:303AM1120815011Greg WallaceChanges: No DPCS changes. Add LH from 0.98 to 1.48 s.

Result: Plasma. LH faulted out.

Next shot: Decrease target nl_04 to 0.9e20. Move LH pulse to 1.4-1.5 s. Turn off D-port and increase power from E- and J-port accordingly.

Result: Plasma.

Next shot: Decrease nl_04 target to 0.7e20.
Aug 15 2012 12:37:00:633PM1120815014Greg WallaceChanges: Decrease nl_04 target to 0.7e20.

Result: Plasma.

Next shot: Increase outer gap between 1.35 and 1.5 s by decreasing RCUR from 0.660 to 0.6575 to see if that helps with LH breakdown. Decrease nl_04 demand to 0.6e20.
Aug 15 2012 12:45:27:773PM1120815015Greg WallaceChanges: Increase outer gap between 1.35 and 1.5 s by decreasing RCUR from 0.660 to 0.6575 to see if that helps with LH breakdown. Decrease nl_04 demand to 0.6e20.

Result: Plasma. LH had fewer faults with bigger outer gap.

Next shot: Decrease nl_04 demand to 0.5e20. Increase outer gap by an additional 5mm (decrease RCUR from 0.6575 to 0.655) during LH pulse.
Aug 15 2012 12:52:50:597PM1120815016Greg WallaceChanges: Decrease nl_04 demand to 0.5e20. Increase outer gap by an additional 5mm (decrease RCUR from 0.6575 to 0.655) during LH pulse.

Result: Plasma. LH looks much better with bigger outer gap.

Next shot: Locked mode shot. Turn seg 2 off and seg 3 on. Reduce PG1 puff from 300 ms to 200 ms.
Aug 15 2012 01:02:54:203PM1120815017Greg WallaceChanges: Locked mode shot. Turn seg 2 off and seg 3 on. Reduce PG1 puff from 300 ms to 200 ms.

Aug 15 2012 01:25:09:370PM1120815018Greg WallaceChanges: Re-run shot 16. Turn off seg 3 and turn on seg 2.

Result: Plasma. ELMs! Clean LH pulse. ICRF coupling seems to have been perturbed by ELMs. No ELMs during LH---possibly due to NINJA puff, bigger outer gap, or LH?

Next shot: No DPCS changes.
