Session Leader plan for Monday, 20-Aug-2012 (afternoon plasma tests) Engineering setup as on 1110215014, but reduce TF limit to 165kA MP298a? Plasma startup The goal of this mini-run is to establish plasma operation in reversed field. We will also try to provide a few target plasmas for verification of the new HIREX_SR alignment, in preparation for their half-day run which may happen on Tuesday. Other systems may piggyback. The shot is based on a 2011 I-mode which is the reference shot for John Walk's run scheduled for this Friday, but with the field reduced to 5.3T, just to minimize magnet cool-down times. Gas setup: ---------- Fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) Fill B-side lower with 2 psi neon Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) fill H-bottom with 1 psi argon hybrid enabled (PG5) fill NINJA with 10 psi D2 DISABLED Load shot from 1110215014 (1MA, nl04=7e19, 5.8T, I-mode shot) Reduce PG4 in seg1 from 65msec to 20msec (it was a cryopump startup) Reduce TF_CUR in seg2 from 159733 to 150000. Enable argon puff from H-bottom (PG5) Tune up reverse field startup. Note seg 1 settings from 1110215014 RCUR= -3500 BR_0= 0.000 IC_EF4=+1290 May also want to tweak PG4 and PG3 in seg1 |

Session leader summary for Monday, 8/20/2012 MP#298a C-Mod startup (in reverse field) SL: wolfe PO: Shiraiwa EO: Tesfaye, Cochran, Parkin This was a successful restart in reverse field. Power tests were completed by 14:15, and we began plasma operation with shot#20. All plasmas ran successfully, no fizzles, no flattop disruptions. We tweaked the startup a little, not that it mattered much; we had intermittent bounces, but they didn't hurt anything. The startup should be good to go. HIREX_SR had triggering problems, and did not get the data they needed to prepare for a run tomorrow. The DNB fired into plasma from shot#25 on. MSE reports that the signal with 5A of DNB current is insufficient. However, Ken Liao was able to clearly see the beam enhancement on his He signal. LH fired into plasma from shot#26 on, getting up to almost 600kA. Some hints of non-thermals (xrays, ECE) were observed, although the density was too high for much of an effect to be expected. There may be an issue with the pressure reading on the H-bot plenum. It was used for argon puffing today, and argon was coming into the plasma despite the fact that the plenum pressure was reading -0.5psi on shots 24-25. Increasing to a reading of 1.2psi for shot#26 caused a noticable increase in the 2pi diode signal, over 500kW. |

| This is the first run day for reversed field and current.
The machine works well today. Power supply test finished smoothly and we started plasma operation little earlier than an control room expectation (after shot 20). 11 successfull discharges are made (out of 11 attempt). No computer problme, no power supply problme, and no fizzle today. In the last three discharge, we tried to reduce the density to 0.5, but ne04 did not decrease as requested. (Note for tomorrow) pcs program for the last shot has active segment 1 and 2. Seg 3 and seg 4 are zeroed. |
