PO: I. Hutchinson SL: G. Wallace MP605: LH2 lower hybrid launcher checkout and conditioning Start from shot 1120820030. 1) Reduce Ip to 800 kA and nebar to 7e19 during flattop. Re-establish LH operation from 1120820. (120 kW/klystron, 90 deg CCD phasing, 0.8-1.0 s). Adjust plasma shape and CPS trip levels as necessary. 2) Increase LH power and pulse length. |

| MP 662 - HIREXSR Startup
We've change HIREXSR to view H-like Ar across the entire plasma cross-section and H-like Ca in the core. This requires some run-time to re-align and focus the instrument using repeatable plasma shots. For the standard configuration Ohmic plasma have been used, but his layout is geared toward high Te so an ICRF-heated L-mode will be used. GOALS: run-repeated L-mode plasmas and do focusing and masking tests. If time remains, demonstate the instrument in a high (Te ~ 6 keV) I-mode plasma. 1) Load 1120820025 and raise Ip to 1.1 MA, keep nl04 ~ 0.7. Add 3 MW of ICRF power from 0.7-1.35. Adjust strike points if necessary and add Ne to ensure good divertor compatibility. Demonstrate repeatability (3-4 shots) 2) Do a 5-point focus scan (x3 mod 34,000 < 60,0000), (x1 mod 0 < 36,000) 3) Place system at minimum of Ti and do masking tests a) left, right, medium small(x3) b) left, right, up, down (x1) 4) Develop higher Ip locked mode (try for 1.1 MA, lower to 1.0 if can't get it) 5) I-mode test plasmas to demonstrate new HIREXSR capabilities and develop divertor strategy for rev. B. |

| SL Summary for 1120821(am)
MP 605 LH2 Lower Hybrid Launcher Checkout and Conditioning SL: G. Wallace PO: I. Hutchinson The purpose of today's run was to verify proper modification of the LH2 lower hybrid launcher for operation in reverse field direction. The phase shims used in the jungle gym for forward field phasing were removed and replaced with new shims specifically cut for operation in reverse field. There exists no full calibration of the launcher with the reverse field shims installed, so it was important to verify that the calculations used to determine the phase shim lengths are correct. A fully non-inductive discharge would allow for a simple measure of the efficiency figure of merit, n*I*R/P, to prove definitively that the phasing is correct. Shots 1-16 were dedicated to bringing up the LH power and extending pulse length. The early discharges were at very high density despite little or no puffing outside of segment 1. As this density continued to drop, the amount of current drive increased steadily. The density rose significantly during the earlier LH pulses, which may be due to increased outgassing from low numbered waveguide columns. (In normal field direction the waves travel across the launcher towards higher numbered columns, while in reverse field the waves travel the opposite direction. The electric fields at the low number columns will increase in reverse field, which may increase outgassing at first.) Significant current drive was achieved at 5.4 T and 800 kA with net powers between 600 and 800 kA. The loop voltage transiently crossed 0 several times, but did not remain there as the density climbed during the LH pulse. After switching to 600 kA we sustained a loop voltage of only 0.15 V (0.8 V Ohmic) for the duration of the LH pulse. An upper bound on the current drive efficiency is ~2.5e19 AW^-1m^-2, which agrees with the efficiency found in normal field configuration. tl;dr: The switch over to reverse field operation is a success and the LH system is ready for physics operation. |

| We were able to effectively use the 1/2 run day to focus both the H-like Ar and H-like Ca systems and do x2 vignetting tests of H-like Ar. Will process that data and make changes before Friday if necessary. I'm not worried about the H-like Ca since the emission is more core localized.
We lost ~40 minutes to TORVAC power problems which prevented us from getting to the locked mode development. First I-mode physics run that needs HIREXSR may need to lose ~3 shots to make sure the locked mode is working. Much work is needed to covert THACO over to using this new alignment and get good shot-to-shot feedback for session leaders for the coming weeks. Also, we did some target discharge development and have a good starting point for I-modes. The heat flux is up on the 2nd tile on the inner divertor and spread over the outer divertor and has low/medium Ne seeding. If we hadn't lost time to the TORVAC problems we would have increased power and seeding. |

| Summary
------- Most of the two purposes of the run were achieved. A problem with power to the vacuum gauges lost about an hour at the end. Physop Observations __________________ Startup was generally satisfactory but fizzles were obtained after a 1.1MA disruption. The current ramp was adjusted to obtain fairly early diversions (~.15s vs .25s in the original version of this shot). Various segment switch matching adjustments were made to reduce perturbations. Shot 31 would be a good place to start for loading and developing additional shots. ICEF4 might need to be lowered by maybe 20A. Then Ip, nl04, or rcur tweaks on that are probably preferable to choosing an earlier shot and trying to redo the segment switch matching. A locked mode shot (segment 3) was attempted in shot 32 but disupted from radiative death apparently because of Ar overdose, 150ms. Probably 50ms (PG5) is nearer the right amount. The density eventually became well controlled at a low level during the LH experiments. How much of this was early diversion versus simply purging the walls is unclear. | Aug 21 2012 09:20:59:537AM | 1120821001 | Greg Wallace | LH at 120 kW/klystron, 90 deg CCD phasing. Fired at t=0, not t=0.8-1.0. Density much higher than requested. Next shot will have correct timing of LH pulse. |
| Aug 21 2012 09:38:07:967AM | 1120821003 | Greg Wallace | One fault during LH pulse at 120 kW/klystron, 90 deg CCD phasing, ~500 kW net. Looks like it might be breakdown on the plasma side (spike on refco on many columns at same time). Next shot will increase pulse length to 0.7-1.2 s at same power level of 120 kW/klystron, 90 deg CCD phasing. Also keep trying to decrease density. |
| Aug 21 2012 09:48:21:477AM | 1120821004 | Greg Wallace | Clean LH pulse at 120 kW/klystron, 90 deg CCD phasing, ~500 kW net. Density still quite high, nebar ~ 1.25e20. Next shot will increase LH power to 150 kW/klystron and try to decrease density again. |
| Aug 21 2012 10:03:42:270AM | 1120821005 | Greg Wallace | Many LH faults due to high reflections. Line averaged density finally came down which also reduced LH probe density.
Next shot will decrease outer gap by 4 mm to improve LH coupling. Also move launcher in from 1279 to 1278. |
| Aug 21 2012 10:23:06:033AM | 1120821006 | Greg Wallace | One LH fault at 150 kW/klystron, 90 deg CCD, ~625 kW net. Looks like it could be breakdown in col 3. Nothing obvious on the LH camera. Launcher seems to have crept in to 1277. Will move back slightly to 1278. Next shot will repeat at this power level. |
| Aug 21 2012 10:32:03:363AM | 1120821007 | Greg Wallace | One fault in LH pulse at 150 kW/klystron, 90 deg CCD phasing, ~625 kW net power. Fault occurs at 0.97 s, can be seen on frame 29 of LH camera. Looks like breakdown on plasma side C-row. Will stay at this power level to see if it clears. |
| Aug 21 2012 10:47:15:723AM | 1120821008 | Greg Wallace | Clean LH pulse at 150 kW/klystron, 90 deg CCD phasing, ~625 kW net. Strong current drive early in LH pulse, but density rises during pulse from 4e19 to 8e19. About 50% loop voltage reduction by the end of the pulse. Next shot will go up to 170 kW/klystron and hope density doesn't rise so much. |
| Aug 21 2012 11:13:28:570AM | 1120821009 | Greg Wallace | One fault near end of the LH pulse at 170 kW/klystron, 90 deg CCD phasing, ~725 kW net power. Nothing obvious on LH camera but clearly plasma side breakdown looking at the reflected power signals. Next shot will repeat with this power to see if it clears up. Clear signs of current drive in this discharge. |
| Aug 21 2012 11:17:04:010AM | 1120821010 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Aug 21 2012 11:33:04:397AM | 1120821011 | Greg Wallace | Many faults. Density too low at edge (nebar < 4e19!!!) for coupling. Next shot will increase line averaged density which should improve coupling. |
| Aug 21 2012 11:49:31:007AM | 1120821012 | Greg Wallace | Two faults, looks like an arc on col 2? Will stay at this power level for now. Next shot will decrease to 600 kA. |
| Aug 21 2012 12:03:11:137PM | 1120821013 | Greg Wallace | Many faults due to breakdown on the plasma side at 170 kW/klystron, 90 deg CCD phasing, 800 kW net power. Next shot will reduce to 150 kW/klystron to see if things improve. |
| Aug 21 2012 12:16:47:650PM | 1120821014 | Greg Wallace | More faulting at 150 kW/klystron, 90 deg CCD phasing. Seems to not really like the 600 kA discharge. Could be "broader" SOL profiles at the lower current? Next shot will increase outer gap by 3mm (reduce heat flux on launcher) and move timing to 0.8-1.3 s (avoid crossover in early part of LH pulse). |
| Aug 21 2012 12:29:39:787PM | 1120821015 | Greg Wallace | Several faults at 150 kW/klystron, 90 deg CCD. Still breaking down on the plasma side. Better than shot 14---bigger gap seemed to help. Next shot will increase outer gap by another 3mm. |
| Aug 21 2012 12:40:01:420PM | 1120821016 | Greg Wallace | Much better with the larger outer gap. Only two faults. Still looks like breakdown on plasma side, maybe col 2 or 3? 150 kW/klystron, 90 deg CCD phasing, ~725 kW net. Sustained Vloop near 0.15 V. Last shot of the day for MP 605. |
| Aug 21 2012 01:06:31:070PM | 1120821017 | Matt Reinke | Transitioning over the MP 662 - HIREXSR Calibration.
First goal is to setup a repeatable ICRF-heated L-mode plasma for use in diagnostic configuration changes. LSN, Ip=1.1, nl04~0.7, ICRF at 3 MW from 0.7-1.35 seconds. Adding Ne puffing for heat flux managment, increasing Ar. RESULT: decent target plasma, but got two big Mo injections and ICRF-induced density rise. NEXT: adjust the strike points, move inner strike higher to avoid heat flux on the corner, move Ne puffing earlier |
| Aug 21 2012 01:21:31:303PM | 1120821018 | Matt Reinke | repeat of target with tweaked shaping and gasing
RESULT: got rid of injections, moved inner footprint up a tile but outboard footprint is riding high. Lots of outgassing from ICRF NEXT: RXL change, repeat, trying to get the density control |
| Aug 21 2012 01:35:00:870PM | 1120821019 | Matt Reinke | converging on good target shot for calibration
RESULT: killer Mo injection after 1.0 seconds NEXT: reduce ICRF to 2.5 MW and increase Ne to 45% |
| Aug 21 2012 01:39:19:357PM | 1120821020 | Matt Reinke | RESULT: post-disruption fizzle
NEXT: repeat |
| Aug 21 2012 02:15:44:927PM | 1120821022 | Matt Reinke | RESULT: Excellent target shot. Perhaps the disruption helped to outgas the walls? Getting better nl04 control. This makes a good 1st shot in the focusing scan.
NEXT: 2nd point in focus scan (see HIREX entries) |
| Aug 21 2012 02:42:45:503PM | 1120821023 | Matt Reinke | 2nd focal point
RESULT: good plasam, density a little higher NEXT: adjust HIREXSR for 3rd focal point |
| Aug 21 2012 02:41:58:863PM | 1120821024 | Matt Reinke | 3rd focus data point
RESULT: HIREXSR did not trigger, ran test shots afterwards and it worked OK NEXT: Repeat 3rd focal point |
| Aug 21 2012 02:53:02:970PM | 1120821025 | Matt Reinke | trying for 3rd data point again
RESULT: got the 3rd focal point NEXT: repeat at 4th focal point |
| Aug 21 2012 03:04:53:923PM | 1120821026 | Matt Reinke | repeat target at 4th focal point
RESULT: good Ar 4th point, but bad LBO. Mark fixing the shot NEXT: the x4 points are good enough to get the Ar focus, so we'll set Ar to best focus and get the 4th focal point for LBO |
| Aug 21 2012 03:29:12:960PM | 1120821027 | Matt Reinke | H-like Ar at best focus
RESULT: excellent repeat NEXT: start H-like Ar masking test, try for 4th H-like Ca focal point |
| Aug 21 2012 03:40:34:940PM | 1120821028 | Matt Reinke | first H-like Ar mask point, 4th H-like Ca focal point
RESULT: excellent shot NEXT: get A-SIDE mask of H-like Ar and repeat of 3rd H-like Ca focus |
| Aug 21 2012 03:50:58:337PM | 1120821029 | Matt Reinke | RESULT: good repeat
NEXT: might be a few minutes, something wrong with TORVAC |
| Aug 21 2012 04:42:16:960PM | 1120821030 | Matt Reinke | RESULT: managed to repeat L-mode target after long wait
NEXT: Flipped H-like mask, last H-like Ca focal point |
| Aug 21 2012 04:59:28:327PM | 1120821031 | Matt Reinke | last L-mode target shot
RESULT: good repeat of target, but the H-like Ca got bumped so didn't get the focal point NEXT: attempt at locked mode |
| Aug 21 2012 05:12:17:057PM | 1120821032 | Matt Reinke | locked mode target with seeding out of H-BOT.
RESULT: way too much Ar, throughput similar for forward field shot, good to know for future use. Looking at 1120210004 (forward), a 150 ms from H-BOT was used while on 1110317006 (rev.) H-BOT was at 50 ms. NEXT: end of run |
