| Run plan for 1120829.
MP 712 "Density range and dependence of I-mode in Rev Bt LSN plasmas" Session Leader: Amanda Hubbard Physics Operator: Ron Parker Note: Requesting a boronization, with non-standard parameters, before the run, followed immediately by extended He ECDC. See Jim Irby's logbook entry under DISCHARGE_CLEAN for details. Object of this 2-day MP is to determine the achievable density range in I-mode, and document the minimum and maximum powers at each density. Step 1: Boronization recovery, and recovery of I-mode. Start with 1120828027, but raise Ip to 1.1 MA, and Bt to 5.7 T. Program nel 0.9e20 m-3. Step ICRF power up during flat top (2-4 MW to start). Turn OFF NINJA puffing and Ne seeding; can use some Argon. Expect initially we will get higher density, and/or trips. Repeat until density control established, ICRF stays on, I-mode found. If this takes too many shots, try one or more lower Ip (900 kA) shots with programmed VDEs (ask Bob for recipe). Then, based on the experience to that point, do either Part A from MP, scanning density DOWN shot to shot, if this seems feasible, or Part B, scanning UP shot to shot. Adjust ICRF steps to determine I-mode window (ie L-I and I-H transitions). Later in the day, do the other step. If high Z impurity injections occur, start Neon seeding, starting with small puffs and increasing shot to shot. If the low density range at 1.1 MA is limited, try some shots reducing Ip to 0.9 MA, where the previous lower density I-modes were achieved. LHCD may be injected, if available, in some of the lowest density cases. Start with the LH antenna pulled back, insert later if the right conditions appear achievable. This will provide some preliminary information for MP 722. |

| Run summary for 1120829. (preliminary; will expand once more data are examined).
MP 712 "Density range and dependence of I-mode in Rev Bt LSN plasmas" Session Leader: Amanda Hubbard Physics Operator: Ron Parker A good run, despite the unwelcome surprise of E-port transmitter failing in the am; we had a delayed start to check this out. Power was limited to ~ 3.8 MW, restricting the parts of the MP we could do. Basically the L-I thresholds down to LOW density limit, and I-mode pedestal data at moderate power. The 'boronization lite' recipe we tried seemed to work well (see 'DISCHARGE CLEAN' comment). Did have strong outgassing and RF trips for first few shots, but disruptions on shots 5 and 7 reduced this a lot; had first I-modes by shot 6, and quite good ones by shot 9-10. For the main part of the run, we conducted a density scan to progressively lower density. Highest was nebar 1.5e20 m-3 (shot 12) the only condition at which we were able to also get I-H transitions with the power available. The lowest clear I-modes, by the end of the day, had density down to nebar 0.87 e20. We varied ICRF power steps show to shot, to get good L-I threshold data, and also in some cases good pedestal and fluctuation data. Pedestals were typically > 800 eV, this run should have extended John Walk's data set. While more analysis is needed, it seemed the power threshold stopped decreasing, may have risen, at lowest ne. BUT, there were hints of ohmic I-modes at even lower ne. See log for details, I need to catch a bus! |

| The purpose of the run was to explore I-mode thresholds at low density. Not surprisingly, disruptions became a problem late in the run, although a large number of good I-mode shots at low density were successfully run.
The good news: Hot I-modes can be produced at line-averaged densities of 1e20 m-3, which would make excellent targets for LHCD Bad news: The scrape-off layer desnity in these discharges is very low, , ~ 1e17 m-3, prohibiting LH coupling. Is this due to the cryopump? Or intrinsic to I-Mode? Can local gas puff raise the density above cutoff? (This needs to be explored) The only machine problem today was the failure of the D transmitter, which caused a delay of 1.75 hours at the beginning of the run to diagnose.RF power for the run was furnished by the E and J antennas, limiting the total power to 4 MW. Neverthelss, electron temperatures in the 5 keV range were produced in the I-modes. Scorecard: 26 plasma attempts (run started 1.75 hours late) 19 full length (some disrupting over halfway into rampdown) 6 disruptions 1 fizzle |

| Aug 29 2012 08:44:13:513AM | Amanda Hubbard | Delayed start today since a problem has been discovered with E-port. I do expect to need 4-5 MW to meet the goals of this run (I-H thresholds at both low and high density). So, we are taking time needed to at least diagnose the problem.
Expect to get to at least the initial steps of the run plan later this morning. | |
| Aug 29 2012 10:59:10:637AM | 1120829001 | Amanda Hubbard | Good shot - 5.7 T, 1 MA. Got 1 MW ICRF (from D-port). nel 0.8 to 1.1 - not unexpectedly, get outgassing post boronization, and L-mode.
nebar was 2e20 m-3. |
| Aug 29 2012 11:10:44:550AM | 1120829002 | Amanda Hubbard | 5.8 T, 1 MA. Got 1 MW ICRF from D, plus some from J (tripping). nebar up to 2.05e20 - still outgassing. And some impurity injections.
The Ip ramp phase looks odd - very hollow Te profiles, and probably j(r) profiles judging by MHD, and late start to sawteeth. |
| Aug 29 2012 11:22:06:533AM | 1120829003 | Amanda Hubbard | 5.8 T, 1.1 MA. ICRF up to 3.3 MW, fewer trips; conditioning coming well. But density up to 2.3 e 20!
Current rise looked normal this time. But a batch of early injections. |
| Aug 29 2012 11:40:59:963AM | 1120829004 | Amanda Hubbard | 5.8 T, 1.1 MA. ICRF up to 3.7 MW, fewer trips; conditioning coming well.
nel to 1.3e20 m-2. nebar 2.2e20, a bit lower than shot 3. This time injections come 1.3-1.5 s. Definitely L-mode (from both confinement and Tped 320 eV) Next shot try cryopump to bring neutrals down a bit. |
| Aug 29 2012 11:48:10:433AM | 1120829005 | Amanda Hubbard | Disruption just before the ICRF, not clear why. Will it outgas the divertor? |
| Aug 29 2012 12:13:35:113PM | 1120829006 | Amanda Hubbard | The disruption did reduce the gas and density a lot. Probably as a result, we this time did get I-modes, and 2-3 H-modes. Rather ratty ICRF, and a number of injections.
Will reduce ICRF this time. |
| Aug 29 2012 12:23:05:307PM | 1120829007 | Amanda Hubbard | Got an early disruption, soon in the ICRF. Density is now much lower, nel 0.6 target, rising to only 0.7. nebar 1.1.
May actually be time to increase target density. And we will try (not too much) Neon. |
| Aug 29 2012 12:58:46:713PM | 1120829009 | Amanda Hubbard | This is a good one - looks like we've got through the 'conditioning' phase of the run plan, and a reasonably steady I-mode. Density is now roughly the programmed target, actually a bit less than I had expected - nel 0.74, nebar 1.22.
So, we will start with Part A of the MP, scanning to low density. I expect at least to be able to document the L-I threshold, we may not have enough power for the I-H. First add power steps at this ne, to pin the thresholds. |
| Aug 29 2012 01:12:04:697PM | 1120829010 | Amanda Hubbard | Very nice one. Clear L-I transition early in 3.2 MW step. L-mode at 2.5 MW. We got I-mode before at 3 MW. Stayed steady I-mode at max power of 3.8 MW.
nebar was somewhat high than shot 9, 1.5e20 (nel 0.9). And Matt says there is more Neon (and I note higher Prad~0.9 MW). Repeat one more time with RF steps adjusted. |
| Aug 29 2012 01:26:41:973PM | 1120829011 | Amanda Hubbard | Another good one. Looks like a marginal I-mode thinking about developing at 2.7 MW (low f turbulence drops), clear transition and WCM right at beginning of 3.3 MW. No H-mode at 4 MW, and high P RF is tripping.
Next shot start w 3 MW, keep middle power longer, allow NINJA 1.1 s. |
| Aug 29 2012 01:45:04:990PM | 1120829012 | Amanda Hubbard | As expected, got an L-I transition, though rather weak, in the 3 MW step; much clearer and higher Tped at 3.4 MW; this clearly goes non-linear. This pins the L-I threshold at nebar =1.5 (3 MW).
Not expected was the I-H mode transition at 0.87 secs (3.3 MW); prior shots did not get H-mode at 3.7. Note density is slightly higher, 1.6e20 nebar. Or maybe just that annoying variability. Not much of a power window! Another L-I-H sequence later after RF trips; GPI and CXRS should have caught some of this. Next: Try lower density. Reduce powers and turn off NINJA. |
| Aug 29 2012 01:59:07:770PM | 1120829013 | Amanda Hubbard | Nebar 1.1 ohmic, 1.4 in early ICRF, drops to 1.3e20.
Nice long I-mode, transitions at first step 2.45 MW, continues to max power 3.5 MW; as has been found before, power window is opening up at lower ne. Repeat with bigger power steps. |
| Aug 29 2012 02:33:33:337PM | 1120829014 | Amanda Hubbard | Good - clear I-mode in the middle and higher P steps, not very evident at 2 MW.
Note W, ne are increasing through 4 MW step. Repeat w modified P steps. |
| Aug 29 2012 02:38:33:910PM | 1120829015 | Amanda Hubbard | Another good, hot I-mode.
At 2.6 MW, do get a (rather weak) I-mode. At 2.9 MW, much stronger pedestal (Te8 900 eV) and WCM. RF tripping in highest step. Some ne increase, perhaps due to NINJA. Te0 at least 6 keV, maybe 7! (I need to check xcal on GPC Ch 1 which has low sensitivity at this angle). nebar 1.3 - 1.1 e20 m-3 (pumps out in I-mode, then rises w NINJA. These should be interesting LH targets. Next shot, repeat with longer, intermediate step. Note: Turned off MO LBO (they have their info) and try to couple LH after ICRF (it tripped). |
| Aug 29 2012 02:51:19:727PM | 1120829016 | Amanda Hubbard | Another good, hot I-mode.
At 2.6 MW, again get a (rather weak) I-mode. This is I'd say about the threshold at nebar 1.4. Then a nice steady I-mode at 3.6 MW, nebar 1.38e20. Got helium NINJA data for GPI. Next, reduce target density further, go back to 2, 3 4 MW steps (without NINJA). How low can we go...? |
| Aug 29 2012 03:03:32:180PM | 1120829017 | Amanda Hubbard | Very nice - got I-mode with nebar only 1.0-1.1 e 20 m-3.
L-mode at 2 MW step, prompt and clear I-mode at 3 and 3.7 MW. We may have reached the minimum in Pthresh. Next shot raise first step to 2.5 MW, use longer 3.5 MW step, allow NINJA. |
| Aug 29 2012 03:18:45:883PM | 1120829018 | Amanda Hubbard | Should have been a repeat, but got lower target density, and disruption early in ICRF. Something is getting hot!
Repeat w more Neon and fingers crossed. |
| Aug 29 2012 03:53:27:960PM | 1120829019 | Amanda Hubbard | Very similar, with low ne and a disruption early in ICRF.
But, in the ohmic period, very hot edge Te, and what MIGHT (or might not) be a short ohmic I-mode. Looks like a pedestal on both ECE and TS, some changes in fluctuations (though this is complicated by low and dropping density). nebar was only 5e19 m-3 at this phase. And Te 5+ keV, pretty hot for ohmic! Repeat without ICRF, just to find out. |
| Aug 29 2012 03:44:37:913PM | 1120829020 | Amanda Hubbard | Really ugly and disruptive, in 1st (and only) 300 ms).
Try to get a full length ohmic shot through. |
| Aug 29 2012 03:57:06:153PM | 1120829021 | Amanda Hubbard | Ohmic shot, ran through clean. Ne 3.7-4.6e19.
Again there are some intriguing changes in fluctuations during the same low ne period (0.46-0.65) sec period where edge Te is hottest. Will be interesting to check and see if it is on other diagnostics - hints of potential ohmic I-mode. nebar is 0.65 e20 |
| Aug 29 2012 04:18:00:897PM | 1120829022 | Amanda Hubbard | Added ICRF, delayed to 0,7 s to avoid the early ne dips. Got target 0.75e20, rises to 1.0 in ICRF, then drops to 0.86.
Clear I-mode in the higher P ICRF periods (3.4 MW, with a lot of trips). Big, fast jumps in edge Te, and fluctuations drop on 65 and 75 GHz channels. The low power (2.5 MW) phase is not very clear - might be a marginal I-mode? Te8 500 eV vs 820 eV. We apparently are heating the shoelace again. This may be as low as we can safely go. Good time to give Matt his locked mode shot. |
| Aug 29 2012 04:41:46:263PM | 1120829023 | Amanda Hubbard | Locked mode attempt that didn't lock. |
| Aug 29 2012 04:44:45:300PM | 1120829024 | Amanda Hubbard | Locked mode attempt that DID lock (but disrupted soon after).
For our next shot(s), reload shot 22, use shorter RF steps 2.5, 3, 3.5 MW. (trying to pin down the I-mode threshold without toasting shoelace or anything else.) |
| Aug 29 2012 04:59:14:127PM | 1120829025 | Amanda Hubbard | Good shot, probably record low density I-mode.
Clear L-I transition this time late in the 2.5 MW step, at nebar 1.e20 m-3. Then density drops further, to 0.87 e20, in 3.1 MW phase. Te8 to 820 eV. Brief I-L transitions I think. Prad is steadily rising, no evident injection but something is getting hot. So increase Neon, and adjust powers, for last (final) shot. Add He + D2 NINJA earlier, document pedestals. |
| Aug 29 2012 05:18:35:233PM | 1120829026 | Amanda Hubbard | Good. Did NOT get I-mode in the 2 MW power step. Did get a nice hot one in the 3 MW step, and NINJA crew reports good CXRS (and hopefully GPI) data. Density rose a bit, to 1.0e20 m-3, with NINJA, and Matt reports this and/or the extra Neon kept Moly and Prad lower.
So, a successful end to what has proven a productive run. |
