Run plan for 1120904xxx and 1120905xxx.

PO: W. Rowan (1120904xxx) and S. Wukitch (1120905xxx)

Critical diagnostics for this 1 1/2-day run are: emissive probes (A-B limiter,
ASP, SSS) and GPI.
GPI He puff is seeded with N2 to measure N2 penetration in presence of ICRF power.

Step 1. Establish a reference shot: 1110214016, Bt = 5.45 T, Ip = 0.8 MA, LSN,
nl04 = 0.9x10^20 m^-2.

Three ASP plunges at 0.7, 1.05 and 1.4 s.
One GPI acquisition between 0.55 and 1.15 s.

Three ICRF antenna stepped ramps:
FA-J from 0.55 to 0.85 s, from 0.1 to 1.5 MW
D from 0.90 to 1.15 s, from 0.1 to 1.5 MW
E from 1.2 to 1.5 s, from 0.1 to 1.5 MW (if available)

2 good shots.

Step 2. Repeat the ref. shot but vary teh Z position of the plasma shot-by-shot or dynamically to poloidally "match" FA-J and D antenna "piercing" field lines.

3 good shots with FA-J and D antennas ramped simultaenously.
1 good shot with FA-J and D antennas ramped sequentially.

Step 3. Repeat the reference shot but with Ip = 0.6, 1.0 and 1.2 MA.
3 good shots.

Step 4. Repeat Steps 1 and 3 but with FA-J in monopole phasing @ Ip = 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 MA. one set with conformal and one set non-conformal antenna mappings.
6 good shots.

Step 5. Repeat Step 1 but with Bt = 2.725 T / Ip = 0.4 MA. Antennas powered sequentially.
1 good shot.

Step 6. Repeat Step 5 but with FA-J in monopole phasing.
1 good shot.

Step 7. Repeat Step 1 but with nl04 @ 0.6 and 1.2 x 10^20 m^-2. Antennas powered sequentially.
2 good shots.

Step 8. Repeat Step 1 but in an inner wall limited geometry.
1 good shot.

Step 9. Repeat Step 1 but apply Ne seeding: ~2 psi from B-side lower, 150-200 ms pulse duration @ 50-60 V on the piezo).
2 good shots.

Step 10. Repeat Step 9 but with FA-J in monopole phasing.
1 good shot.

Step 11. Repeat Step 1 but with Bt = 8.0 T / Ip = 1.16 MA. Antennas powered sequentially.
2 good shots.

Step 12. Repeat Step 11 but with FA-J in monopole phasing.
1 good shot.

Total is: 26 good shots.

Session leader summary for 1120904xxx: MP708 and MP682.

We managed to complete steps 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7-ish (different nl04 values from those specified in the original run plan) of our run plan.

However, the original Z-position scan (step 2) called for the FA-J and D antenna combination and D antenna was not avaiable for today. We had to use the E antenna instead.

A brief summary is: the highest ICRF-induced potentials were measured in the
1.2 MA shot during the FA-J heated part of the discharge with the FA-J antenna
in monopole phasing -- plasma potentials up to about +300 Volts.

A 1.2 MA shot heated with FA-J antenna in regular phasing (0,pi,0,pi) configuration showed ICRF-enhanced potentials in the range of 100-200 V.

A clear "RF cell" radial structure structure was observed in the 1.2 MA discharges during the FA-J antenna heating part of the discharges. The Er field reversal was at Rmid = 0.92 and 0.95 m. This structure was not observed at
any other Ip.

Plasma potentials for all shots at 1.0 MA or less were <=100 V, even in the monopole phasing configuration.

It remains to compare plasma potential variations with the Er variations (from
GPI) and with core Mo contents.

Physop Summary for 1120904

The run was in support of MP708 "RF sheath rectification in plasmas heated with a field-aligned ICRF antenna," SL: R. Ochoukov and MP 682 "Continued studies of RF induced electric fields in the SOL" SL: J. Terry. This reversed field run consisted of a narrow z-scan and a broad current scan. The run may have been hampered by the failure of FMIT 1 since the experiment was designed to use the D-port antenna. See SL report.

The setup for the run was based on segment 1 from a recent shot (1120830032) and segment 2 from a much older reference shot (1110214016) which was developed in reversed field. The latter shot may contain a vertical instability (see below) Only the predictor recalibration was required for the latter shot. Flips not required.

The physics operation consisted of a narrow z-scan and a broad current scan. In the course of the z-scan, a disruption was generated by a vertical instability. That instability seemed to be apparent in the reference shot but did not always end in disruption. The remedy was to reduce the elongation by decreasing the inner and outer gaps.

The current scan included a few values between 0.6 MA and 1.2 MA. At reduced current, marfes were generated. The remedy was to reduce the density.

The RF was required to execute a complex stepped waveform which went well.

Results: full length shot but FA-J is trippy.

Next: repeat, likely the last shot of the day.
Sep 4 2012 05:14:54:920PM1120904028Roman OchoukovRequested: reversed Bt = 5.45 T, Ip = 0.7 MA,
nl04 = 0.5, LSN.

All four emissive probes are on (LA, UA, SSS and ASP).
SSS parked at Rlocal = 0.802 m.

GPI acquisition from 0.55 to 1.15 s.

Three ASP plunges at 0.70, 1.05 and 1.40 s.

Results: disruption @0.96 s. Plasma potentials only reach ~50 V during FA-J monopole (above the midplane).

Next: EoR.

Sep 4 2012 09:38:13:293AMBill RowanPCS setup for the run

Load 1120830032, use for segment 1

Import segment 2 from 1110214016 with label 2011 0.8 MA SNL Rev-Field
Previously compared all v's and all p's for this segment to assure that the wires had polarities which are consistent with a recent reversed field shot. Concluded that no polarity ("flip")changes in all p's or all v's are needed. Made none.

For segment 2, recalulated the predictors to allow for coil issues
RCUR, ZCUR, RXL, ZXL, RXU, ZXU,B21_PROJ

Recalculated the B21_PROJ predictor as described in step 2 of physop notes for reversed field operation (August 17, 2012)
