Session leader plan for 1120905xxx: MP708 and MP682.

This run is a continuation of run 1120904xxx.

SL: R. Ochoukov (1120904xxx) and J. Terry (1120905xxx)
PO: W. Rowan (1120904xxx) and S. Wukitch (1120905xxx)

Critical diagnostics for this 1 1/2-day run are: emissive probes (A-B limiter,
ASP, SSS) and GPI.
XEUS and LoWEUS camera. CHROMEX (if available)
GPI He puff is seeded with N2 to measure N2 penetration in presence of ICRF power.

Step 1. Establish reference shot 1120904013
RF power as in 1120904013.

Depending on the status of the D antenna, we will follow one of the two
alternative routes for this run day.

1 good shot.

Step 2. a) if D antenna is available then:

repeat the ref. shot but vary the Z position of the plasma shot-by-shot or dynamically to poloidally "match" FA-J and D antenna "piercing" field lines.

3 good shots with FA-J and D antennas ramped simultaenously.
1 good shot with FA-J and D antennas ramped sequentially.

Step 2. b) if D antenna is not available then:

Repeat Step 1 but in an inner wall limited geometry.
1 good shot.

Step 3. Repeat Step 1 but in an inner wall limited geometry with FA-J in monopole
phasing.
1 good shot.

Step 3. Repeat Step 1 but apply Ne seeding: ~2 psi from B-side lower, 150-200 ms pulse duration @ 50-60 V on the piezo).
2 good shots.

Step 4. Repeat Step 3 but with FA-J in monopole phasing.
1 good shot.

Step 5. Repeat Step 1 but with Bt = 2.725 T / Ip = 0.4 MA. Antennas powered sequentially.
1 good shot.

Step 6. Repeat Step 5 but with FA-J in monopole phasing.
1 good shot.

Step 7. Repeat Step 1 but with Bt = 8.0 T / Ip = 1.16 MA. Antennas powered sequentially. Will need a good 8.0 T reference shot, will consult with the
phys op.
2 good shots.

Step 8. Repeat Step 7 but with FA-J in monopole phasing.
1 good shot.

Total number of shots is 11 with the shot sequence varying
depending on the availability of the D antenna

SL summary for run 1120905xxx

We completed the Ne seeding and the 8.0 T field shots.

Key observations from today's experiment:

1) Ne seeding didn't make a difference on the induced plasma potentials in plasmas
"heated" with FA-J in monopole.

2) ICRF-induced plasma potentials in plasmas heated with dipole FA-J antenna dropped
slightly during Ne seeding, will need to examine more carefully what caused the
drop and if there's any correlations with the Mo contents in the core.

3) ICRF-enhanced plasma potentials reached values >400 V in plasmas "heated" with
monopole FA-J antenna @ 8.0 T. These potentials correlate well with RF-induced Er fields
and radiative power losses from the core.

Will have to do more analysis to compare with CHROMEX and ZEUS/LeWUS data on
impurity contents in the core.

Summary

The run was productive. The start up was quite robust with only one
fizzle. Operation at 8 T had a rough start. I forgot to carry the
BR_0 (-1 mT) and RCUR (3500) offsets from 012 and once they were set
breakdown was robust. We had an IOC indication on 015 and fuses were
replaced. Following a successful TF test under PLC control, we
resumed 8 T operation. The 8 T discharges showed that the waves do
not penetrate to the core (PCI) and there is little evidence heating
(ECE).

Result: full length pulse.
Once again, plasma potentials reach up to +400 V during the monopole FA-J
rf pulse.

Next: Repeat but with slight changes to the ramp up phase, see Phys Op entry.
also swap RF pulse order (first monopole then dipole).
Sep 5 2012 05:15:59:247PM1120905020Roman OchoukovRequested: reversed Bt = 8.0 T, Ip = 1.0 MA,
nl04 = 0.8, LSN.

All four emissive probes are on (LA, UA, SSS-dead and ASP).
SSS parked at Rlocal = 0.809 m.

GPI is off.

Three ASP plunges at 0.70, 1.05 and 1.40 s.

Result: disruption at 0.5 s, before RF.

Next: Repeat without disrupting.
Sep 5 2012 05:15:43:200PM1120905021Roman OchoukovRequested: reversed Bt = 8.0 T, Ip = 1.0 MA,
nl04 = 0.8, LSN.

All four emissive probes are on (LA, UA, SSS-dead and ASP).
SSS parked at Rlocal = 0.809 m.

GPI is off.

Three ASP plunges at 0.70, 1.05 and 1.40 s.

Result: full length discharge.
First ASP plunge went into Ohmic part of discharge.
Strongest ICRF-induced potentials are during the monopole RF phase.

Next: EoR.
