Run plan for 1120906. MP 722 "Assessment of LHCD efficiency in high Te I-mode"

Session leader: Amanda Hubbard
Phys op: Yijun Lin.

Do NOT want overnight boronization.
DO want overnight ECDC, in HELIUM.
Request cryopump available, but do not turn on first thing (we may or may not use it).
Will need Neon available for seeding and D2 in NINJA near LH grill.

The objective of this run is simple: Couple LHCD into a high Te I-mode at moderate density, where we would typically be seeing 'density limits', and compare with colder plasmas at the same density, see if CD effects are larger.

Key diagnostics: HXR, edge density measurements (reflectometers, probes, including scanning probes if available), polarimeter, ECE, PDI probes.

Achieving it may not prove as simple; last week the SOL densities proved surpisingly low in this configuration. We will need to combine LHCD and ICRF, without melting anything. So, stay watchful and flexible.

Tentative run plan:

1). Reproduce good I-mode shot 1120829017 (5.8 T, 1.1 MA, nebar 1.0e20 m-3).
Check target density, about nel 5e19 I think. Adjust startup for NO cryopump.
3 MW ICRF, 0.7-1.1 secs; increase pulse length on subsequent shots to 0.7-1.3 s, using Ne seeding if injections or heating seen.

LH will monitor local density, may try to couple a little.

2) Try reducing Bt to 5.2 T, to put ICRF resonance on HFS rather than LFS (and thus further from outer limiter and shoelace antenna).
If we get equivalently good I-mode, will run here rest of day. If not, go back.
Again, monitor edge density.

3) Next shot, reduce Ip to 1 MA (same q95 as target shot). If hot I-mode still achieved, and SOL densities increase, will stay here. (don't want to go lower due to concerns about fast ions).

4) Once target shot determined, increase coupled LH. Starting 100 ms after I-mode, turning off 100 ms before it ends. Means to improve coupling include:

- reducing outer gap (while keeping loads on limiter and QC antenna reasonable).
- puffing from NINJA near LH launcher (while not increasing plasma density too much; if need be reduce the ohmic target.)

5). N// scan, from 1.9 to about 2.5, to determine maximum effect on HXR.

6) VERY IMPORTANT: Ohmic (or low P ICRF control shot with same density, N// lower Te. Measure HXR, polarimeter effects, etc.

7) Assuming some positive effects were seen at high Te, scan ICRF power over a few shots (L and/or I-mode) to determine its threshold.

Time permitting, and depending on results, repeat steps 4 and 5 at higher or lower densities; ideally we want to determine the density dependence at high Te.

Run summary for 1120906. MP 722 "Assessment of LHCD efficiency in high Te I-mode"

Session leader: Amanda Hubbard
Phys op: Yijun Lin.

A challenging run as expected. But, in the end we did get through essentially all of the run plan, and I think have the data to accomplish the assessment of LHCD efficiency at high Te. Although the quick assessment is that it likely is not dramatically different than at lower Te.

It was indeed hard to couple LHCD into an ICRF I-mode. The first 11 shots were unsuccessful due to high reflections. The steps needed, each of which helped to some degree, were

- Reducing gap (to < 1 cm) and making shape more up-down centered.
- Puffing gas in NINJA near LH grill.
- Reducing Ip to 1 MA.
- Using as little E-port power as possible (it reduces ne)
- TURNING UP THE FAULT LIMITS SO LH COULD RUN ANYWAY.

We managed to get LHCD into I-mode (or in some cases hot L-modes) at N//= 2.2, plus a few cases at N//=1.9 (eg shot 24) and N//=2.6 (shot 26, vry high reflections).

Shots 17, 18 and 26 were steadiest I-modes, many shots transitioned rather late; we were marginal on power and density. nebar was typically 1.3-1.5e20 m-3.

Ran ohmic target comparison shots with ne ramp in shots 27, 28 (same ne range, lower Te).

Last couple shots were at 900 kA; good plasmas but only brief LH pulses.

thanks to all - machine operators (no fizzles by Yijun!) LH and ICRF crews for a good run.

Tomorrow, more I-modes, no LH, all the ICRF!
(Steve Wukitch tuned up D-port today late in shot, got 5 MW total)

Session Leader Comments
Sep 6 2012 09:14:47:260AM1120906002Amanda HubbardFirst plasma, 5.8 T, 1.06 MA. Disrupted at 0.67 s, before either ICRF or LH on.

Probably because density was much lower than expected, dropped to nel 3.5e19!
GOt to Te0= 5 keV (big sawteeth!).

Next shot, increase target ne, and enable Neon to be on the safe side.
Sep 6 2012 09:38:07:447AM1120906003Amanda HubbardNice I-mode this time. Te0 > 6 keV. But disrupted 1.08 s.

Density is dropping lower than in target shot, probably contributing. We will raise the next shot, before we start reducing gaps as LH wants, we need shots that survive.
Sep 6 2012 09:56:54:893AM1120906004Amanda HubbardNice I-mode again, full shot this time. Te0 > 6 keV.

Got desired target density nel 6e19 m-2, nebar ~ 10^20. This completes step 1 of run plan.

But, as we feared very low density at LH grill. Before we start reducing gaps, reduce Bt to 5.2 T to move ICRF resonance further from outboard hardware.
Sep 6 2012 10:12:17:403AM1120906005Amanda HubbardGood shot, 5.2 T, 1.1 MA. Still get an I-mode, Te0 ~ 5 keV early (on GPC2 and FRCECE, GPC not yet recalibrated). Cools after 0.92 secs, probably linked to rising Prad. We will increase Neon next shot to try and deal with this.

This will be a suitable target shot. (Step 2) I don't see a good reason to reduce Ip (step 3) yet. Now we need to figure out how to get some LH into it - has been tripping due to low grill density. (Step 4).

We will start by reducing the outer gap from 1.7 mm to about 1 cm.
Sep 6 2012 10:25:11:337AM1120906006Amanda HubbardSimilar shot, still no LH coupled.

I-mode at least until 1 sec. Edge cools at 1 s. Prad still rising to 1.5 MW, think we are heating the divertor. Will try some strike pt sweeping, and reduce outer gap more for LH.
Sep 6 2012 10:43:37:607AM1120906007Amanda HubbardGood I-mode again. Smaller gap (about 7 mm) but ngrill still too low.

Will try the famous LH grill NINJA next shot.

Edge Te cooling is delayed to 1.05 s, maybe the strike pt sweep helped. The NINJA may help with that and the ne droop (to nebar 9e19 m-3) we are seeing. These will all be issues when we get to extending the pulse lengths. But first we need to couple some LH.
Sep 6 2012 10:49:23:387AM1120906008Amanda HubbardDisrupted before either RF or NINJA came on.
Sep 6 2012 11:13:15:540AM1120906009Amanda HubbardFull shot, with some edge cooling mid pulse. Density still too low at grill, esp during ICRF.

Next: try to center plasma vertically on grill.
Sep 6 2012 11:21:23:090AM1120906010Amanda HubbardTHis was a hotter, steadier, I-mode discharge; the centering of the plasma may have improved some PFC interaction. 130 kJ, Te0 6 keV, Te8 1.1 keV (cools after 1.05 s when Prad rises, 1 MW until then.

But, LH still not coupling, even in the ohmic period.
Sep 6 2012 11:33:00:263AM1120906011Amanda HubbardGood shot, but no LH at all. Extended J longer, reverted to L-mode in that period.
Sep 6 2012 11:39:50:443AM1120906011Amanda HubbardGood shot, but no LH at all. Extended J longer, reverted to L-mode in that period. LH crew reports local density is lower when E on.
Sep 6 2012 11:53:19:243AM1120906012Amanda HubbardFirst shot where some LH is coupled - trip levels were raised. Reflections are still very high (70% to 40%). NINJA puff (<~ 1 sec) did help, but also raised target density, from nebar 1.2 (higher than a few shots ago) to 1.5. They will back off.

Next shot: Reduce Ip to 1 MA, see if it affects SOL lengths. Better keep a close eye on limiter....
Sep 6 2012 12:14:23:283PM1120906013Amanda HubbardGood. 1 MA. Nebar 1.1-1.3. Coupled 200-400 kW LH.

From ECE, looks like more effect in the ohmic period, not what is expected. But ne is a little lower.

Note: At today's field, should use GPC2 channels 7 or lower, eg Ch 6, for non-thermals, not Ch 10.
Sep 6 2012 12:17:09:930PM1120906014Amanda HubbardUsed 2.6 MW J+ 0.5 E. This gave good hot plasma, and better LH (but still high reflections). Definitely some non-thermals on ECE. nebar 1.2-1.5e20.

Next: Try just J-port. Don't think this will be an I-mode but you never know.
Sep 6 2012 12:37:16:023PM1120906015Amanda Hubbard2.5 MW, J-port only. We did get an I-mode, but as expected, rather marginal and late, ~ sec. This would make seeing small changes due to LHCD hard. Greg reports coupling not all that much better. So we will go back to the waveforms of shot 14, start modifying the timing of ICRF and LH to see the effects more clearly. And hopefully raise the LH power.
Sep 6 2012 12:52:33:670PM1120906016Amanda Hubbard3 MW ICRF. I-mode still comes rather late, about 940 ms, which reduces Prad and ne. Did get about 3 keV non-thermal ECE.
Sep 6 2012 01:20:31:270PM1120906017Amanda HubbardGood shot for the MP. Steady hot plasma, with LH ~ 400 kW, N//=1.3-1.5.

Small effect on ECE. Should have HXR data.
Sep 6 2012 01:47:04:677PM1120906018Amanda HubbardAnother very good shot, steady hot plasma, with ~ 500 kW LH mid I-mode,

SHoudl be good data at turnoff. But, nebar by then is 1.5e20, more than we had wanted (shot 17 also). So, repeat with lower target ne.

As I feared, Ian reports little HXR response on this shot and 17, more on 16 and 19.
Sep 6 2012 01:41:38:467PM1120906019Amanda HubbardLower target density gave a lower density in flat top (1.1e20 m-3), but unfortunately a much less steady shot. I mode didn't come until about 0.9 s, perhaps triggered by NINJA puff?? Did get more ECE, but will be hard to sort out transients. By LH turnoff, ne is up to 1.3e20, and ECE effect is small.

Try going back to higher target, turning off NINJA puff. Can LH couple without it?
Sep 6 2012 02:06:52:050PM1120906020Amanda HubbardTurning off the NINJA gave no LH power; not a good thing. Also resulted in another very late I-mode (after 1 sec).

Did give lower density, nebar 1.3 to 1e20.

Next, turn NINJA puff back on, earlier (0.8 s).
Sep 6 2012 02:17:21:003PM1120906021Amanda HubbardLow density discharge, but again not very steady - Confinement transition not until after 1 second. Density drops throughout pulse.

LH issue prevents any power.

Raise target density to nel 6.5ee19 and repeat.
Sep 6 2012 02:29:29:880PM1120906022Amanda HubbardGot good LH this time, but many trips in ICRF (J-port). Result was a moderately hot L-mode. Some ECE response to the LH. nebar 1.2 to 1.5 to 1.3e20; NINJA puff is having quite a big effect I think.

Rebalance J and E. And hope LH still couples.
Sep 6 2012 02:51:17:753PM1120906023Amanda HubbardGood ICRF and LH. Te0 5 keV, Te8 below 1 keV, not an I-mode except perhaps at very end of ICRF pulse (after LH). nebar ~ 1.5e20 during LH.

Should have good data on the LH effect at turnoff (I think it was small, though).

Next: Try some N// variation.
Sep 6 2012 03:07:50:957PM1120906024Amanda HubbardGood ICRF and LH. N//=1.9

This time got a short, late, I-mode 1.04-1.16 s, complicating interpretation of HXR I expect. Do see ECE turnoff, ~1 keV. nebar 1.5 - 1.4 during LH.

Next: Repeat trying more E-port power. See if coupling can handle it.

Sep 6 2012 03:34:51:453PM1120906025Amanda HubbardGood ICRF and LH. N//=1.9 Higher ICRF power. 3.7 MW.

Again got a short, late, I-mode 1.04-1.16 s, complicating interpretation of HXR I expect. Do see ECE turnoff, ~1 keV. A second I-mode after 1.2 s.
Next higher N//.

And Cornwall will delay his NINJA puff from 0.8 to 0.9 secs (moving it earlier is one of the few changes we've made since the better shots 17 and 18).

Sep 6 2012 03:59:34:350PM1120906026Amanda HubbardGot the early I-mode back, steady until after LH. Looks like the earlier NINJA puff was the problem (mea culpa, I asked for the change).

Good ICRF. N//=2.5 High reflected power, so low (350 - 200 kW) forward power. But enough I hope to see any LH effects. I do see some ECE rise, which is higher than at lower N//.

Next, we will turn off ICRF, program ne ramps during LHCD, to get a low Te comparison for the analysis and modeling.

Sep 6 2012 04:02:10:953PM1120906027Amanda HubbardComparison shot, with ne ramp and LHCD N// 1.9.

nebar is 1.2 -1.35e20 during ICRF, which is 660 kW. Got more ECE response than we've had all day - so much for the 'high Te is good' theory. Though ne and power may not be quite comparable.

next, repeat at N//=2.2, increase ne ramp.
Sep 6 2012 04:35:52:880PM1120906028Amanda HubbardAnother good comparison shot, with ne ramp and LHCD N// 2.2.

nebar is 1.2 -1.6e20 during ICRF, which is 600 kW. Good, covered the range of most of today's ICRF shots, for comparison of HXR, PDI etc.

Next, try for a 900 kA I-mode.

Sep 6 2012 04:49:42:413PM1120906029Amanda Hubbard900 kA, with 3 MW ICRF. Got a hot L-mode, no sign of limiter heating. LH tripped early. nebar ~ 1.3e20m-3.

Repeat with

- slightly lower target ne.
- 0.5 MW more ICRF, and power to 1.4 s for better baseline.
- LH staying on.

(too late in the day for one thing at a time...)
Sep 6 2012 05:05:03:140PM1120906030Amanda HubbardVery similar, both the plasma and (unfortunately) the LH; only a short pulse. Got an I-mode this time, but after LHCD. 6 keV!

I aw ~ 700 eV non-thermal response, Ian reports no HXR. But a short and low power LH pulse.

Thanks everyone! We proved LH and ICRF CAN play together, with a little nudging.
