Run Plan for 1120907

MP 712 "Density range and dependence of I-mode in Rev Bt LSN plasmas"

Session Leader: Amanda Hubbard
Physics Operator: Ian Hutchinson

This run will continue the run from 1120829, which made good progress but was limited in power (to about 3.7 MW) due to lack of E-port ICRF.

Before run, do short boronization followed by Helium ECDC.
See OPS bulletin by Gary Dekow for details.
Cryopump is desired. Gas setup as on 1120829. We will need Ne seeding; start with 150 ms.

Step 0: Boronization recovery. Recover density control and ICRF power (all 2 antennas). If this takes too long, consider a deliberate VDE shot or two.
4-5 shots?

We may decide to do step 2 before step 1 if the target density hard to reduce.

1. Complete high power part of Part A, scan to low densities.

Start with repeat of 1120829015, a nice I-mode with moderately low density. But, increase ICRF power to max available. Will we get an I-H transition?

Scan density shot to shot, starting with lower densities. Shorten pulse and use Neon as needed to avoid overheating Mo. Either reach I-H transitions or, more likely, establish lower bound.

2. MP Part B: Scan target density to higher values, document L-I and I-H thresholds.

Start with nebar 1.5e20 m-3 (as on 1120829012). Step ICRF power, determine L-I and I-H tresholds.

Then increase density shot to shot. Based on prior experience we expect the power window to get rather narrow at higher densities. Determine max ne at which we get a clear I-mode, as opposed to direct L-H transition.

3. Part C: Fuel density DURING a hot I-mode.

Return to one of the moderate density I-modes from Part 1 (nebar ~ 1.2-1.3), with high ICRF. Program density to rise, and/or puff with NINJAs, AFTER I-mode is established. Goal is to see if we can increase I-mode density above the usual upper limit found eg in Part 2. This is likely to take a number of discharges to optimize.

4. Part D; Ip scan, performance optimization.

Time permitting, which is as usual unlikely, we will take some of the most interesting cases from the earlier shots, and vary current. Up to 1.3 MA for maximum performance. And down as low as 0.9 MA to establish a hot target for future LHCD scenarios.

Run summary for 1120907

MP 712 "Density range and dependence of I-mode in Rev Bt LSN plasmas"

Session Leader: Amanda Hubbard
Physics Operator: Ian Hutchinson

This run continued the run from 1120829, which made good progress but was limited in power (to about 3.7 MW) due to lack of E-port ICRF. Today we had full ICRF power (4.7 MW routinely clean, up to 5 MW on some shots), which proved needed and valuable in expanding the C-Mod operation space. MANY THANKS TO ANDY AND THE REST OF THE RF CREW WHO WORKED OVER (AND OVER)TIME IN THE PAST WEEK TO GET ALL THE TRANSMITTERS WORKING.

We used a short boronization followed by overnight He ECDC, as before 1120829, so conditions were good and comparable. Little trouble with Mo radiation. Boronization recovery (outgassing, RF tripping) took about 6 shots. On shot 4 we induced a deliberate VDE, which was helpful - future run leaders might want to consider this.

Given densities were high, started with MP Part B, determining L-I and I-H thresholds at moderately high densities. (Shots 9-15). Got good points between nebar 1.3-1.8 e20 m-3. At the higher densities, the window between I and H-mode transitions was extremely narrow; no steady I-modes, at most a brief transient phase before the H-mode transition. eg shots 12-15, nebar 1.55-1.8.

We then went to lower densities (Part A), which had been covered on 1120829, with the goal of injecting higher ICRF. Density programming proved tricky; shot 16 evolved to higher density during I-mode. Reducing target density on shot 17 led to a locked mode and disruption, the start of a series of locked modes and fizzles; by this point the walls were completely outgassed and we were actually getting lower densities than programmed. (shots 17-23).

Recovered good, full length discharge with I-mode on shot 24 (nebar 10^20, I-modes a 2, 3 ~4 MW, no H-mode.

Shots 25-28 were very good I-mode discharges, nebar ~ 1.3-1.5. Progressively better ICRF. Shot 28 is a particularly nice, high performance discharge (tweaking Zcur and gaps ameliorated the ipurity influx at highest P on shot 26, a good equilibrium for future use). This had nearly 5 MW ICRF, > 1 keV pedestals (with great ETS data), Te0 7.5 keV (on GPC, GPC2 was saturating!), WMHD 178 kJ and H98 =1.1.

From shots 29-32 we did Part C, fueling DURING an I-mode. This is something we've wanted to try for a long time, and worked better than I had dared expect. We used NINJA puffing, mainly HFS. Extended I-mode density to 1.7 e20 on shot 29, 1.8e20 on shot 31, and 2e20 m-3 on shot 32 (another 'trophy'). The pedestal cooled, and we could see changing fluctuaions, but still solidly an I-mode and WMHD stayed nearly as high. Note that this density is above that for which we could make a steady I-mode starting with a cold target. It thus appears that the trajectory matters; creating a hot pedestal and strong WCM first enables avoiding H-mode to higher densities.

The run was going well enough it was decided to extend an hour - many thanks to those who stayed on no notice!

Shots 33 and 34 were locked mode shots for HIREX. Shot 35 we used even stronger NINJA fueling; got some RF trips, and eventually an I-H transitions at nebar ~ 2e20 m-3. It tentatively appears that lower Te correlated with I-H modes. Clearly there is room to expand further, and the prospect that with more power even higher densities and pressures could be optained.

Shots 36 and 37 we went on to 1.3 MA. (Part D) Again got very high performance I-modes. The early part of 36 reached over 200 kJ with 4.7 MW ICRF! Again H98 > 1.1. NINJA puffing degraded things somewhat, partly due to causing RF trips. But, we again remained in I-mode to 2e20 m-3, with a late I-H transition when Tped was relatively cool. Shot 37 had delayed fuelling and lower density, but lower ICRF power and performance.

We have much data to analyse, for IAEA and likely a long time beyond. An expanded operating space for I-mode and tantalizing prospects for the regime in the future, on C-Mod and elsewhere. If this was my last run, I'm glad it was a good one! Many thanks to the large team (engineering, RF, many diagnostics) who made it happen.

Session Leader Comments
Sep 7 2012 09:10:15:210AM1120907001Amanda HubbardFirst shot ran well. As expected post-boronization, lots of gas - nel 8e19 m-2 pre-RF, 1.3e20 after. E had only a few trips, D ran clean, J was tripping.

5.8 T, 1.1 MA; we plan to stay at this field all day, and current most of the day.
Try again.
Sep 7 2012 09:16:01:133AM1120907002Amanda HubbardSimilar - D and E ran clean, J is tripping early. We will use cryopump next shot to try and reduce neutral pressure.
Sep 7 2012 09:38:27:633AM1120907003Amanda HubbardSimilar again - D and E ran clean, J is tripping early in high P phase.

Cryopump did reduce densities, by about 0.1 nel (now 1 to 1.2e20, still well above our target of 0.6).

Next shot we will try to induce a disruption at 1.2 secs.
Sep 7 2012 09:52:22:930AM1120907004Amanda Hubbard900 kA conditioning shot. Density and RF were somewhat better (nel 0.7 to 1.2 e20 m-2), up to 4 MW though J is still ratty.

VDE induced 1.23 secs (went down). We'll see if this reduces density and gas on the next shot.

Sep 7 2012 10:09:00:237AM1120907005Amanda HubbardConditioning shot (maybe next to last one?). Getting better - we actually got a short I-mode followed by an ELM-free H-mode duirng the higher power ICRF phase. Max nel 10^20 m-3 before H-mode. The disruption appears to help.

One more cleanup shot coming up.
Sep 7 2012 10:17:17:687AM1120907006Amanda HubbardSimilar. Again a quick L to I to H-mode sequence, early in the 4 MW RF step, not in the 2 MW step. So we have some idea of the thresholds (at nel ~ 9e19,
nebar ~1.5-1.6e20.).

Next, start the physics. RF step 3 and 4 MW.
Sep 7 2012 10:34:49:337AM1120907007Amanda Hubbard GOod plasma. 3 MW was already enough to make an I-mode and I-H transition; thresholds are low. So, next shot use 2, 2.5 and 3 MW steps.

nel 0.7-0.9 in this period. nebar 1.1-1.5e20. More outgassing and evoultion than I'd like, hopefully the early 2 MW step will help get that out of the way.

Radiation is nice and low - only 0.5 MW in I-mode phase on 2 pi diode, which had ~ 2 MW yesterday. So boronization has helped!
Sep 7 2012 10:48:12:210AM1120907008Amanda HubbardGood. I-mode starts developing I think already in 2 MW step, certainly in 2.5 MW. nebar evolving 1.0-1.3 e20. Then I-H at 0.87 s, 2.6 MW, nebar 1.4e20.

Next shot we (Yijun) will reduce power further, and make longer steps since it is taking some time for density and I-mode to evolve.
Power window is indeed rather narrow in this density range.

Sep 7 2012 11:05:48:553AM1120907009Amanda HubbardPerfect threshold shot, at fairly constant density nebar 1.2-1.3e20 m-3 (nel 0.75e19 m-2).

Got gradual L-I evolution at 0.85 s (only 2 MW ICRF), very clear and hot at 2.6 MW. H98 ~ 1. And I-H transition late in 2.6 MW step, so this must be about the threshold.

Next: Repeat with slightly higher target ne. Decided to go up first, until we lose the I-mode phase, and then go down.
Sep 7 2012 11:24:14:460AM1120907010Amanda HubbardGood shot. Got very clear L-I at 2 MW. Though density was not much higher at this time, nel 1.3e20. NO I-H transition, up to 2.6 MW, nel 1.4. So we will add more power next shot. Also extend duration and have NINJA puff at 1.2 secs.

Sep 7 2012 11:40:09:453AM1120907011Amanda HubbardGood shot. Got brief I-mode then I-H transition, all in the 3 MW power step.

nel was 8.2e19, nebar 1.3 e20, not as high as I wanted. Outgassing is now pretty low.

second H-mode transition at nebar 1.7e20, and 3.4 MW ICRF. This one seems to go directly L-H.

Next increase target by nel 0.2e19, use bigger RF steps since I don't know what thresholds to expect.

Sep 7 2012 11:53:06:970AM1120907012Amanda HubbardGood shot. nel was 1.0e20. nebar 1.55

Again, got brief I-mode then I-H transition, all in the 3 MW power step.

Repeat with 2.5 MW in first step to bracket L-I power.

Sep 7 2012 12:16:05:090PM1120907013Amanda HubbardGood shot. nel was 1.0e20. nebar 1.6e20 (slightly higher than in 12, maybe due to more early RF?)

No apparent I-mode even at 2.5 MW, then perhaps a brief transient phase just before H-mode at 3 MW - the window is indeed narrow!

Prad staying low (0.4 MW) in L/I mode, up to > 3 MW in H-mode(s).

Next: Increase target density. I rather expect direct L-H transition, we'll see.
Sep 7 2012 12:32:02:900PM1120907014Amanda HubbardGood shot. nel was again 1.1e20, nebar 1.8e20.

Definitely L-mode at 3 MW. H-mode early in 4 MW step (1.055 s), with perhaps a brief, transient, I-mode phase at RF stepup. (starting 1.025 s).

The RF step was rather big, so next shot increase middle step, reduce last step to 3.9 MW.
Sep 7 2012 12:52:17:753PM1120907015Amanda HubbardGood shot. nel was again 1.1e20, nebar 1.8e20.

Even at 3.89 MW (with some trips) there is at most a weak, transient, I-mode phase prior to H-mode; slight change in fluctuations and Tedg at 0.935 s, no real increase in confinement. Prompt I(?)-H transition very early in the step to 4 MW. With simultaneous Te and ne increases.

Could go even higher in density. But, given the long run plan we will instead go down. Program target nel 5e19 m-3, use bigger RF steps until we see how wide the I-mode power window is.
Sep 7 2012 01:20:58:930PM1120907017Amanda HubbardLocked mode before RF leads to disruption; ne dropping too low (3.5e19!)
Sep 7 2012 01:31:37:157PM1120907018Amanda HubbardSame again only worse; nel to 2e19, followed by strong non-thermals!
Sep 7 2012 01:37:27:600PM1120907019Amanda HubbardFizzle.
Sep 7 2012 02:07:52:553PM1120907020Amanda Hubbard
Plasma. Got a very low density throughout; about what was programmed, but less than expected based on prior shots - no increase during ICRF this time. nebar only 6e19 m-3, less than half that on shot 16!

Decent plasma until 0.9 s when there is a locked mode and/or injection. Te0 7 keV, and H-mode like confinement, though not an evident pedestal; 60 GHz reflectometer does show decrease in fluctuations. So, either an I-mode or very hot L-mode. Certainly no H-mode. 3 MW.

But also high impurities and disruptions.
Sep 7 2012 02:21:12:323PM1120907021Amanda HubbardDisrupted about 0.25 s.
Sep 7 2012 02:28:29:110PM1120907022Amanda HubbardPlasma to 1.2 secs. But again very low density (nebar 7e19), and high radiation, esp in 4 MW ste. There is now no increase at all when RF is on.

High Te and confinement, though. Fluctuaions do look like I-mode. But not a pretty discharge; Zeff = 8!

We will raise target nel to 7e19,
Sep 7 2012 02:29:28:640PM1120907023Amanda HubbardFizzle
Sep 7 2012 02:54:31:150PM1120907024Amanda HubbardGot a full shot back. Density ended up lower than programmed, but higher than prior shots; nel 6e19, nebar 1.0e20 m-3. H98=1. Good I-mode at 2 and 3 MW, except for big W injection that almost killed the shot. RF struggles at 4 MW, and Prad is up to 0.9 sec.

Good data points, and clearly no H-mode.

We will increase density and Neon a bit on next shot.
Sep 7 2012 03:11:09:477PM1120907025Amanda HubbardNice one. nebar 1.2-1.3. RF up to 4.1 MW, pretty clean. I-mode all the way, at least 3 and 4 MW steps. (maybe not 2 MW, ne is higher now). H98 > 1.

Disrupted after ICRF off, for unclear reasons.

Keep this target, try for even more RF, earlier.

Sep 7 2012 03:20:15:613PM1120907026Amanda HubbardAnother good I-mode; clean 4 MW but tripping at 5 MW; no sign of H-mode. 1.15-1.3e20.

This one had clear L-I already in 2 MW step (after I just asked Yijun to raise for next shot). nebar was 1.2 e20 at that time.

Rebalance and repeat. Should be a good one for demonstrating nice wide power window.
Sep 7 2012 03:45:54:933PM1120907027Amanda HubbardThis time nice clean RF, up to about 5 MW. But not so clean plasma, getting 3 big injections in the high power phase. I'd really like this example shot, so try one more time, adjusting gaps to reduce interaction.

After this we will go to step C and try to fuel the I-mode. Which is indeed hot, Te8 ~ 1 keV and T0 7.5 keV! nebar up to 1.4 e 20.

163 kJ, and H98>1, even with the injections. Ploss is exceeding 5 MW.

This time no L-I at 2.5 MW. nebar was 1.4. So another threshold data point.
Sep 7 2012 04:01:04:717PM1120907028Amanda HubbardTrophy shot - IAEA here it comes.

4.7 MW ICRF, stays in I-mode, no obvious injections. Prad rises smoothly.

nebar 1.35 to 1.55e10 20 m-3, increasing during high P phase.

W 178 kJ, H98 1.1.

Now we will move high P phase a bit earlier, and try increasing density with NINJA puff.
Sep 7 2012 04:19:38:237PM1120907029Amanda HubbardGood. Puffed D2 NINJA at 0.9 secs. Nebar gets to 1.7e20, still solidly in I-mode though it is cooling a bit, and I can see changes in fluctuations. 175 kJ. H98 1.13.

This density is roughly where we were finding no I-mode window, at much lower ICRF power, in earlier shots today. So the trajectory does seem to make a difference, worth pursuing.

But, we used both LFS and HFS NINJA, seems to be making D-port trip. So adjust to mostly HFS fueling.
Sep 7 2012 04:28:33:887PM1120907030Amanda HubbardFizzle.
Sep 8 2012 12:19:07:300PM1120907031Amanda HubbardGreat I-mode, with fuelling. RF 4.7 MW, clean. And NIJA got us to nebar 1.77e20 m-3, still clearly in I-mode with no sign of H-mode transitions. Slight pedestal cooling (1 keV to ~ 850), but only a tiny drop in WMHD (178 to 175 kJ).

Another keeper!
Sep 7 2012 05:07:13:143PM1120907032Amanda HubbardEven nicer! Longer ICRF and NINJA puffs achieved nebar to to 2e20 m-2, with only a few ICRF trips (still 4.7 MW) and keeping WMHD up - to 178 kJ.

This is well higher than we've been able to make I-modes before.
Sep 7 2012 05:25:36:487PM1120907033Amanda HubbardLocked mode attempt - that didn't lock.
Sep 7 2012 05:25:22:377PM1120907034Amanda HubbardLocked mode shot - that locked (early).
Sep 7 2012 05:53:10:270PM1120907035Amanda HubbardChange of plans - these shots have been so good we are continuing until 6pm.

Next shot will be like 32, but with a larger gas puff, to find out what the density limit to the I-mode is, and what it then transitions to (L or H-mode?).

Result: An H-mode. Very strong NINJA puff, from 0.9 secs. Cools edge. I-H transition at 1.026 secs. nebar was just over 2e20, not very different than the highest we reached in I-mode shot 31. Likely it depends somewhat on the power and density/Te nu* trajectory somewhat. We had somewhat less steady ICRF this shot.

Next: 1.3 MA
Sep 7 2012 06:13:53:303PM1120907036Amanda HubbardGood I-mode, 1.3 MA. Peak WMHD 200 kJ. W and T roll over after 0.9 s, when NINJA puff hits. RF also trips, these may be related.
High WCM frequency, about 450 kHz.

Get an I-H transition late, after edge cools.

Last shot coming up: We will delay the NINJA, tune the RF.
Sep 7 2012 06:26:13:820PM1120907037Amanda HubbardAnother good one - worth the wait for cryopump.

Got I-mode, no H-mode. Lower density, droops without NINJA.

Some ICRF tripping, W HMD 188-155 kJ.

THAT'S ALL FOLKS - THE LONG LATE RUN IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED! WILL BRING GOODIES ON MONDAY.

Have a good weekend - I'll post a proper summary on Monday.
