| MP 694 Transport of helium impurity in L-mode, H-mode, and I-mode
Required systems: DNB, Thomson, ICRF, cryopump, reflectometer *RUN BEGINS AT 8:00AM* This is a continuation of MP 694 from run 1120822. During that run, we weren't able to obtain steady I-mode due to uncontrollable density rise during ICRF and a lengthy boronization recovery, so we are trying again without boronization, using a configuration for steady I-modes with nebar ~1.2*10^20 taken from Hubbard's run 1120829. Also, we'll take some ohmic shots for comparison to the previous data. ECDC in D Fill H-bottom with 10 psi He4 Hybrid ENABLED (PG5) Shot plan: Run is at 5.8T 1. Load shot 1120907026, nl04 0.8. But use constant 2.4MW ICRF power from 0.6s - 1.4s. Puff 30ms He4 at 0.9s. DNB timing: 60/20, starting at 0.500 seconds, 14 beam pulses, at 46.5 keV, highest safe current. Once we get a good I-mode shot, repeat 4 times for statistics, using different beam start times. 2. Switch back to I-mode, change ICRF power. a. ICRF to 3.5MW power from 0.6s - 1.4s. b. ICRF to 3.0MW power from 0.6s - 1.4s. c. ICRF to 2.0MW power from 0.6s - 1.4s. d. ICRF to 1.0MW power from 0.6s - 1.4s. (expect out of I-mode) 3. Switch to ohmic shots. Same plasma shape. nl04 0.8. Take 4 shots with beam. |

| Today we will continue (and finish if things go agreeably) running MP705 which was run for the second half of 1120606 (shots 11-24) and the first half of 1120612 (shots 1-15) previously, completing parts a and c. We will be running over the second half of the runday which will go from 8am until 6pm. We will take over at noon.
MP 705: Current profile measurements in plasmas with Strong LHCD SL: Mumgaard PO: Irby This will be for part b of the MP, a shot-to-shot scan in the LH launched phase at constant power, current and density, attempting to get two good shots at each of 4 phases. The later part of the run will then attempt to do a phase scan within a LH pulse with a long LH pulse to show the dynamic phase change results in the same current profile as the static phase. These shots will then be compared to models to determine if the current profile is consistent. We will finish the run with a MSE calibration plasma sweep. (PO note: This will take some programing to change) ==============REQUIRED SUBSYSTEMS================= LH (will not run without) DNB (will not run without) no Cryopump, no ICRF Overnight ECDC in D. | Today we did a scan in LH phase at near constant plasma conditions and net LH power. Were were able to successfully couple phasings of 75, 90, 105, 115 but not 65. We also did a LH phase scan within a long pulse at constant LH net power and plasma conditions. MSE performed well throughout the run and with the ISC actuating every shot and the error bars on the MSE data small (<0.1deg in the MSE frame.) The beam performed very well across the day, only dropping 2 pulses (the first pulse in the train in two different shots) this represents 402/404 DNB pulses, a 99.5% success rate! This data will allow us to compare to models of LH current drive.
Note that for most of the day we extended the IP and BT flattop to 1.65s and for the later part of the run we extended to 1.85s which caused some issues with the power supplied but Steve Wolfe, Jim Irby and Steve Scott figured out the problems with the setup. See their notes for details. So overall we got most of what we were after, except at low phasing which was inaccessible and we couldn't couple to. (though we think we should have been able to) also, the reflection coefficients were pretty high for most of the day. The good shots in scan: phase: shots at 600kW net power 75: 16,17 90: 11,12, 22(560kW, density matched to 105/115 case) 105: 20,21 115: 24, 23(560kW) variable: 28 Not matched but interesting: 10: 90 at 550kW Ohmic: 4,5,6,15,26 MHD at 3-5kHz: 14,18 Trashed: LH faults: 7,8,9,25,27 no-power: 1 Disrupts: 2,3,13 Fizzle: 19 Overall a very good day considering how many systems needed to work successfully. This completes part b of the MP705 and should close that MP. Shot notes: 1: Cycle test 2: early disrupt 3: early disrupt 4: no LH coupling at 65deg 5: no LH coupling at 65deg 6: no LH coupling at 65deg, decide to go to 90deg 7: LH faults at 90deg 8: LH faults at 90deg 9: Less LH faults at 90deg 10: LH at 550kW at 90deg 11: LH at 600kW at 90deg, one of the scan 12: LH at 600kW at 90deg, other 90 part of the scan 13: Early disruption due to locked mode. Try again 14: Locks with MHD 15: LH didn't go, ohmic 16: LH at 600kW at 75deg 17: LH at 600kW at 75deg 18: Locked, but stayed going and got MHD throughout pulse, with LH making it worse. Cool shot. 19: Fizzle 20: LH at 560kW at 105deg, density a bit higher than 11,12,16,17 21: LH at 560kW at 105deg, ditto on density 22: Went back to match density and power to 20/21 at 90deg, accomplished it 23: LH at 550kW at 115deg. 24: LH at 600KW at 115deg Switched to variable phase scan 25: LH faults in second to last step. Power supplies take a notch out of current 26: LH didn't go due to operator error, Ohmic 27: LH went but arced out a bit. Decide to up density a bit 28: LH at multiple phases at constant net power! Great shot. |

| This run was supposed to be an extended run from 08:00 to 18:00, but
trouble with the alternator turning gear hardware delayed operation for approxmately 2 hours. It was decided that there would not be enough time to do both 1/2 day mini-proposals. MP705 was picked to run for the whole day. The machine ran extemely well today. We had only one fizzle, shot 19, which was the result of the primary seal leak at C-Hor opening up enough to bring the machine vacuum nearly to 1e-5 Torr from the helium purge gas. This seal was purged in helium rather than argon so that we could verify that it was the major source of a leak we have been dealing with over the last few weeks. We had several distruptions that were the result of locked modes appearing early in the discharge. Increases in the target density fixed the problem, but we were operating all day very close to locked mode conditions, as we tried to maintain a low enough density for good LH current drive. The density tended to rise with LH power w/o any gas puffing at all from the main fueling valve making it particularly hard to keep the density low enough to maintain good LH conditions. The Lower Hybrid system performed extremely well. It provided many fault-free lower hybrid pulses at the 600 kW level after adjustments in density and the outer gap. The DNB also performed extremely well. Pulses at about 6.5 A and 46.5 kV were maintained most of the day. A cell entry to adjust the gas level was required with the beam current dropped to around 6.2 A. We extended the flat-top to 1.65 s for shot 02, the first plasma attempt of the day. To extend the flat-top beyond 1.5 s requires extending the programming and gain settings of over twenty wires and pre-programmed supply voltages. I checked and changed seventeen of them, but missed the OH1, OH2u, and OH2l voltages. Luckily, they required no changes for a flat-top of only 1.65 s. However, on shot 25, I attempted to extend the flat-top to 1.85 s, but we obtained only a 1.75 s flat-top. Steve Scott noticed that the OH supplies had been missed, and on shot 26, we had a full length discharge. |

A clean phase scan in LH power with long pulse. Result: Great. Just great. Got all 4 phases coupled into it with constant new power. Loop voltage and non-thermals respond to each change in phase. Density creeps up and then pumps out causing non-thermals and loop voltage to change. DNB goes well. Temp increases. Not sure what we'll see in the physics, hopefully the current profile is moving around somewhat. Next step: Done with run. Thanks to everybody who stayed late. |

| Sep 12 2012 08:19:23:027AM | Jim Irby | Stored reversed field version of 1120612001 (Bob's Incredible Shrinking Plasma Shot) in /usr/irby/ shot 1002, having done just step 1 below, in seg 3. Step 2 will be done when we get to that part of the run plan. Seg 1 taken from last shot from yesterday (1120911021, non-cryo startup).
Detailed instructions for converting a normal field shot are: Step 1: For each segment (it is best to deal with all of them, even the unused ones, to avoid future accidents), bring up the ALL_P and ALL_V screens and use the "FLIP" menu item (on the pop-up menu under the right mouse button) to invert the following waveforms: ALL_Ps (seg1): IC_OH1,IC_OH2U,IC_EF1U,IC_EF1L,IC_EF2U,IC_EF2L,IC_EF4U,IP note: all of the traces in the right-hand column ALL_Vs (seg1): OH1_VOLT,CHOPPER,OH2U_VOLT,OH2L_VOLT,EF1U_VOLT,EF1L_VOLT, EF2U_VOLT,EF2L_VOLT,EF4_VOLT,EF3_VOLT,TF_CURRENT note: everything except the pulse gas lines. ALL_Ps (seg2-4) EF2_by_EF4,IC_EF4U,IP (and any other IC_* that may be there) ALL_Vs (seg2-4) OH1_VOLT,CHOPPER,OH2U_VOLT,OH2L_VOLT,EF1U_VOLT,EF1L_VOLT, EF2U_VOLT,EF2L_VOLT,EF4_VOLT,EF3_VOLT,TF_CURRENT note: everything but the pulse gas lines and ACOIL_CUR Step 2: If using the B21_PROJ feedback for locked mode control it is necessary to recalculate the predictor on this wire. Note that the correct acoil configuration for reverse field is (-Dtop +Dbot +Jtop -Jbot), the reverse of the normal field direction. This must be properly entered by the EngOp on his screen, and should be specified on the Physop run plan. To recalculate the B21_PROJ predictor, click on the button to bring up the EDIT_WIRE screen. If the EO has already entered the Acoil configuration on his control screen then it should be sufficient to click the CALL button on the middle row, for the algorithm "nonaxi_smw". However, to be sure that the correct configuration is used, type the following line ACOIL_CONFIG="-DTOP +DBOT +JTOP -JBOT" into the Keyword Args field, and then click CALL. After the call completes, the Alg. Version field should read: 07-Aug-2009,total 2/1 non-axisymmetric field at phi= 18.67 degrees, Acoil=-DTOP+DBOT+JTOP-JBOT You can then OK the EDIT_WIRE screen, Acknowledge the P_INFO warning, and OK the Verify Factor screen. | |
