MP 721: ICRF flow drive and NTMs in high performance I-mode plasmas

Special request:

B-side-upper 15 PSI He3 Hybrid Enbled (PG2)
fill B-side lower with 2 psi Ne Hybrid DISABLED (PG1)
fill H-bottom with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled(PG5)

Ar puff required (H-bottom)
Also possible Ne puff (B-side lower)

Specific request for diagnostics:
FICXS, fast TCI, PCI (heterodyne mode for 50 MHz RF), HIREX, and other standard diagnostic

SL_plan:

(main uncertainty: how much power can the J antenna deliver?)

1. re-establish I-mode with J antenna at 50 MHz plus D/E at 80 MHz.
target plasma: load 1120917015, change Ip to 1.0 MA, Bt0 = 5.1 T, nl04 = 0.6e20
PG2 He3 puff, 0.4-0.55 sec
PG5 Ar puff, 0.3-0.4 sec
PG1 Ne puff, 0.3-0.4 sec
RF waveform:
.J 2 MW, 0.65-1.5 sec, heating phase (180 degree in RF_control)
.D+E, ramp up 0.1 to 2.4 MW, 0.85-1.3 sec, then flat at 2.4 MW from 1.3-1.5 sec.
.find the threshold of I-mode and find the threshold for NTMs.
.check rotation.
We may spend quite a while here until we can get sufficient power to observe the NTMs. We might have to revise target plasma density, RF wave form, He3 puff length, etc.

After a good target has been obtained, swap J with D/E antennas, then repeat.

2. Run RF power above I-mode threshold, but below NTM threshold. check out rotation

3. Antenna phase dependence. run shots at different antenna phases.

4. a locked mode calibration shot.

5. density scan (I-mode threshold and NTM threshold). details will depend on the data above.

6. B field scan. Choose B field and antenna phase from shots above.

7. If time allows, different plasma current.

J antenna was not able to provide high RF power. It was limited at about 1.6 MW. (there was also a possible mistake in the plumber of the J loops, and the phase information recorded may be somewhat off. Strap 1 and 3 may be not [0,180], but [0, 180+36], and JV1-JV3 shows 0 V).

Most of the run was focused on NTMs after we found that the total power is sufficient to get NTMs.

The following has been done:
1. sawtooth length and the possibility of NTM appearance (17, 18, 19, etc)
2. high density kills NTMs (22)
3. NTM in H-mode at higher density and higher beta (20,21)
4. in I-mode plasmas, NTMs can appear if beta is high enough (18, 19)
5. In I-mode plasmas, if density is lower, the beta threshold is lower also (23)
6. B field scan. High B field kills NTMs (with lower beta and also smaller sawtooth).

We have accumulated quite some amount of NTM events, and they will be sorted out later.

Not significant flow drive effect observed. On shot 30, adding J power during I-mode triggered by D+E, rotation increases, but not more than that expected from the increase of Wmhd.

Last shot (35) we tried to run J to drive flow first then add D+E, unfortunately, there was no HIREX data.

The machine and power systems ran well today. After a data/gas test, we had 34 consecutive plasmas. A few shots had very early disruptions due to unintentional locked modes and/or injections (5, 6, 12, 13). For shot 25 and subsequent, we added a 0.1 mT offset to the B21_PROJ wire, which seemed to have a positive effect in preventing locked modes. A possible implication is that some component of error field does not reverse when the fields are reversed.
When we went for intentional locked modes, instead of driving the A-coils to their limit, we turned them off after 0.5 seconds (shot 33); this did lead to locking after 1.03 second, followed very quickly by disruption (1.08 s).

Summary:
34 plasmas
1 gas test

35 shot cycles

1 MA, 5.1 T, nl04=0.6e20, He3/Ne/Ar puff, He3 150 ms.
J antenna phase/JVX: 0 V (programed 180, dipole)

result: max faults on J. Quite high voltage in the transmission line.
next: needs to lower J power to let it run cleaner.

NTMs: actually, there are a couple of them (~30 kHz) after 1.4 sec during H-mode phase after large sawtooth crashes. They are not what I was looking for, but good.

beta_N 1.0
beta_p 0.46
Rotation did not rise in H-mode...Maybe NTMs effect??

Next: raise power on D/E. more conditioning on J and let it run.

NTM: none

next: drop D/E power a little. still try to get J to run. Try to get density lower so it can stay in I-mode.
