| MP720 Controlling sawteeth and fluctuations in I-Mode with modulated off-axis mode conversion heating
SCHEDULED TUES. 10/2 11 AM - 3 PM REQUIRED SYSTEMS: RF D,E, 50 MHZ J (DNB if avail.), LBO Mb DIAGNOSTICS: TS, HIREX SR., GPC, GPC2, TCI, EDGE CXRS, Bolo, AXUV, MSE if avail., Polarimeter, Fast TCI, LH reflectometer, microwave reflectometer, SOL Ti probes, Mirnovs, PCI GOAL: Heat near the half-radius to minimize the very large sawteeth we see in I-mode, and to vary Te/Ti via modulated mode conversion heating. Apply modulated off-axis mode conversion and minority heating to I-Mode plasmas. This will allow us to study the response of fluctuations to electron temperature variations in a regime where TEMs dominate, and to investigate Te profile stiffness in I-Mode. | Inner wall erosion measurements with AGNOSTIC
D. Whyte, + AGNOSTIC team Goal ---- Make first in-situ measurements of plasma-facing surface erosion over the timescale of one to a few shots using the newly developed AGNOSTIC diagnostic. Background ---------- AGNOSTIC has been developed to provide the capability to perform in-situ ion beam analysis of plasma-facing components. It uses a 900 keV deuteron ion beam produced by a RFQ accelerator which is injected into C-Mod at B-port. The beam intercepts the plasma-facing components and produces highly penetration nuclear reaction products which are measured with shielded scintillation detectors. The resulting pulse-height spectrum is used to determine the surface fluence (or depth) of low-Z isotopes such as boron, oxygen and carbon. A steady-state toroidal field is applied to steer the ion beam to different poloidal locations and thus provide a map of the surface properties. At this time the beam can be steered from the inner wall midplane (where the beam is pointed) to approximately the top of the lower inner divertor with an applied field ~0.18 T on axis using the PEI power supply. We have successfully measured boron and oxygen photopeaks along the centerpost. The boron content is finite everywhere, but minimized near the midplane. Approach -------- AGNOSTIC is presently limited to making measurements along the centerpost due to the current limits in the PEI power supply. Our approach will be to maximize the effect of the tokamak plasma at and near the midplane centerpost by using inner-wall limited plasmas which should place the large majority of recycling and heating at the inner midplane. Plasma parameters ----------------- Inner-wall limited shape Toroidal Field: 5-5.4 T Plasma Current: 0.7- 1 MA ICRF heating: up to 2 MW Shot plan --------- Since these are the first measurements using AGNOSTIC between shots and with IWL discharges we are not sure what to expect. So this is a tentative shot plan that may be altered depending on what we see Note that each AGNOSTIC setup requires a brief cell access. 1. Setup the AGNOSTIC detectors and makes measurements at 3 vertical locations (I_PEI = 0, 2500 and 4500 A) 2. Run 3-4 innerwall limited discharges IWL, #1120802006 as target. 2 MW ICRF heating added. 3. Setup the AGNOSTIC detectors and makes measurements at 3 vertical locations (I_PEI = 0, 2500 and 4500 A) 4. Inner wall limited disruption by decreasing minor radius while demanding constant current. See shot 1120914015 5. Setup the AGNOSTIC detectors and makes measurements at 3 vertical locations (I_PEI = 0, 2500 and 4500 A) |

| A successful experiment to close out this run.
Main result: we successfully used AGNOSTIC on a shot-to-shot basis to obtain data about the wall surface properties. - Obtained gamma/neutron spectra at start of this MP (Shot 25) at three different locations along the inner wall - First few discharges had vertical disruptions due to shaping and control issues. By video analysis this did not seem to perturb or "hit" the innerwall. This was fixed by going to Ip=0.8 MA (q95~ 3.5)and some other control changes - Starting at shot 29 we got solid IWL discharge with 2 MW RF - Shot 30 disrupted while IWL apparently due to Mo injecton - Shots 31-33 successful IWL with 2 MW RF - So after three shots (29, 31, 32) we setup AGNOSTIC to run between shots - detectors in the re-entrant tube survived the pulse of shot 32! - RFQ and detectors took data between shots 32 and 33 which comprises the first in-situ shot-to-shot wall ion beam analysis in a tokamak - We will probably have EF4 available tomorrow for vertical field so we'll wait until then to get a 2-D map of the inner wall. Thanks to the entire engineering and scientific staff. |

| Attempted to do more flow drive...but due to the limitation of RF power from J-antenna, it was scrapped after two shots.
Ran a few shots for more NTM study. More data were collected. However, the available heating power was barely sufficient to study the effects of NTMs on plasma confinement. |

| MP720 Run summary - Day 1
GOALS: The goal of MP720 is to study the Te profile stiffness, and response of fluctuations to changes in Te, in I-mode plasmas. Gyrokinetic stability analysis finds the dominant core instability is the trapped electron mode driven by the electron temperature gradient. Therefore we will apply modulated ICRF heating to look for a signature TEM response to changes in the electron temperature profile and its gradient. However I-mode plasmas typically display very large sawteeth, with peak to peak amplitudes up to half the average electron temperature. The sawteeth have long periods as well, approaching the energy confinement time. To minimize the interference of sawteeth and allow a study of the response of transport and fluctuations to changes in the electron temperature profile, off-axis ICRF heating (both 50 MHz He3 mode conversion and 80 MHz H-minority heating) will be applied near the half-radius to obtain I-Modes with small sawteeth. Modulation with a period very different from the sawtooth period will be used to separate the response to perturbations from sawteeth. RESULTS: The half-day experiment was very successful in both minimizing sawteeth and maintaining I-Mode through clean and clearly observable power modulations. Profiles were well-diagnosed with Thomson scattering, HIREX Sr., GPC and GPC2 ECE, TCI, Edge CXRS HFS/LFS, bolometers, AXUV, X-rays, SOL probes, etc. Fluctuation data was obtained with microwave reflectometry at four frequencies spanning edge and core, polarimetry, fast two color interferometer, Mirnovs, phase contrast imaging, and gas puff imaging (all views using He4 puffs). CECE data could not be obtained at the magnetic fields used. Impurity poloidal asymmetry data was taken using laser blowoff of molybdenum. Despite having no J-antenna power at 50 MHz, we successsfully completed the experiment using only D+E minority heating, achieving three clean modulation cases and one steady I-Mode. Modulation was clearly visible on ECE, Neutrons, Wtot, and edge CXRS Ti. Sawtooth amplitude and period were greatly reduced relative to on-axis heated I-modes, allowing a clear separation of sawtooth activity from the response to modulation. Switching from 6.1 T LFS heating to 4.5 T for HFS heating at the half-radius seemed to strongly improve performance. We could not get I-modes reliably at 6.1 T with the available power -- there may be a toroidal field scaling of the I-mode threshold. The run got off to a late start (we gave MP721 an extra shot, then there were some programming errors on the switchover). The first good shot was 1121002011 at 11:35 am, which was a locked mode for HIREX Sr. Then had a delay adjusting ECE grating for 6.x T. Only two shots taken in first hour. Nevertheless, the pace picked up, and we completed 14 shots. We could not get any power from J antenna for any of the shots in MP720, so we turned it off. This meant no 50 MHz mode conversion heating was possible, and that we would have to operate just above the I-Mode threshold with D + E antennas, leaving little headroom for modulation. To avoid continued trouble with injections, RF faults, and possibly a Bt scaling of the I-mode threshold, we move from 6.1 T to 4.5 T for shot 16. This and lowering the RF power dramatically improved performance and allowed us to stay in I-Mode during modulation. Shots 22 and 23 were nearly perfect cases. Thank you to each of you for your enthusiasm and for ensuring good quality data was taken on this campaign's last run day! 1121002011 - locked mode, but short, 1.23 - 1.27 sec, for HIREX Sr. 1121002012 - 6.1 T for minority at rhomid=0.5, nl04=0.7, L-mode, 2.3 MW, tail-end I-Mode, no J power 1121002013 - 6.1 T got I-mode early, but the many diagnostic puffs killed it. | This run day covered three mini-proposals:
Shots 1 to 11 ------------- MP721 - Study of ICRF mode conversion flow drive and NTMs in high performance I-mode plasmas SL: Lin Shots 12 to 24 -------------- MP720 - Controlling sawteeth and core turbulence in I-mode plasmas with off-axis heating SL: Ernst Shots 25 to 33 -------------- MP723 - Inner wall erosion measured with AGNOSTIC SL: Whyte The machine start-up was very good all day. We had only one fizzle, shot 27, which followed a couple of disruptions, and before which I did not lower the prefill. Because the target densities were generally low for the first two mini-proposals, we had several disruptions caused by locked modes and/or injections of moly and in one case Fe (04, 14, 16, 19, 24). We added a tweak to the b21_prog offset that Steve Wolfe and Earl had found useful in suppressing locked modes in an earlier run. It may have helped this run also. We also increased the early density request a little when possible. A seg 1 increase in pg3 was useful in suppressing injections. Shot 10 was supposed to be a locked mode calibration shot. However, I forgot to switch segments, and we got an Ohmic discharge instead. Shot 11 was a successful calibration shot. In changing over to mp723 we had difficulty producing a limited plasma. I thought it would be relatively easy to modify a recent shot to go limited, as we had done in the past. However, it took us two disruptions and a fizzle to obtain a good discharge; a large block of time in a three hour run. My initial changes to CLEARIN were too severe and taxed the ef2 supplies and resulted in a disruption (25). CLEARIN changes were smoothed out and RXU and RXL were made more positive to decrease the triangularity for shot 26, which resulted in a somewhat longer discharge. Ian pointed out that we were ramping ef4 too rapidly, which added to the demand on the ef2s, so we reduced the preprogramming from -3500 to -2000 A. Ip was also reduced from 1000 to 800 kA. So on shot 29 we obtained a good discharge. Shot 30 disrupted because of a large injection, but it was followed by three full-length limited discharges. problems -------- EF4 did not run on shot 01. Data system slowdown on a couple of shots. Shot 28 was "lost". |

No RF faults to speak of, got nice 10% modulation on Te0. Didn't get I-mode well established until 0.85 sec, so start modulation 0.8sec. Continue modulation until end of RF. No LBO NINJA He4 at 1.3 NINJA D at 1.1 |
| Oct 2 2012 02:56:44:857PM | 1121002023 | Darin Ernst | ANOTHER EXCELLENT SHOT, PERFECT RF.
Great modulations. Stayed in I-mode. Dennis was nice enough to give me another shot - so add more Ar and lower Prf min. to 1.0 MW. |
| Oct 2 2012 03:08:43:623PM | 1121002024 | Darin Ernst | Early disruption before RF.
THANKS EVERYBODY! Despite having no J-port power, we got two trophy shots (22 & 23), with a nice response to modulation, and very small sawteeth, and fully diagnosed. |
