From: NEL::LUKE Date: 12-JUN-1994 10:42:39 Description: Run summary for 061094 Run of 940610 Physics Operator - John Goetz (aka Juan Gotez) Session Leader - T.Luke Engineering - V. Bartolino This run is based on Mini Proposal 55: The Study of Core Partcle Transport The goal was to use modulated gas puffing perturbations to determine the diffusion coefficients of particle transport. The plan was to scan in current and density and get a baseline set of coefficients for ohmic, diverted operation. During the run, we ended up only looking at one current, 600 kA. We were able to do two densities at that current, namely low density at a nl of about 5.0 E19 and high density at 8.0E19. We were able to operate diverted and had several good shots with multiple puffs at each of these densities. It also looks like depending on the density when we diverted, we may have been detached also. This will be investigated in detail. Diverted operation was better that on 061009; we were able to get several shots in a row with similiar conditions. However, there still remains a vertical oscillation problem and it seems random whether you survive and keep the shot going. Progress was definitely made in terms of density control and we were able to flatten out the background density during the current flattop. In summary, this was a very useful day for transport studies. The miniproposal is clearly more than half completed and we may be able to make the required comparison of detached and attached plasmas. The best shots were: Low Density: 14,15,16,17,18 High Density:23,24,25,28 The shot by shot summary follows: Shot 1: Set up repeat of shot 940609011. Dud Shot 2: Early disruption Shot 3: Good shot. nebar =1.2e20 , flat density and current after 700 ms shot 4: two puffs at 650 and 750. First seems lost in the diverting of the plasm. Puff 2 looks good but the background n is rising. Shot 5: 3 puffs, rising background Shot 6: Same as 5 Shot 7: background is flattening. shot 8: Too much compensation, background is decreasing. Still 3 puffs. Shot 9: Beautiful shot with 3 puffs. Flat background. shot 10: early disruption Shot 11: fizzle Shot 12 and 13: same as 10 Shot 14: Nice shot, 3 Puffs, background is lower at nl of 5.0e19 at diversion. Shot 15: Good shot Shot 16: Added extra puff at 1.0. Nice Shot 17: Lower Background density. Still going nicely with 4 puffs Shot 18: Dies early. Makes it past diversion and can see the first puff but then disrupts. Shot 19-22: Early disruption Shot 23: Higher Background. May be detached when diversion occurs. nl=6.0 e19 4 puffs. Shot 24: Nice shot. Possibly see the plasma detaching at 700 ms. Shot 25: Nice high density shot. 4 puffs. Shot 26: Disrupts early Shot 27: fizzle Shot 28: Nice shot. Again might see the detached transition at the first puff. nl before diversion is 5.5e19 Shot 29: early disruption That's all Folks. TCL |

| Physics operator summary for 940610 EO: Gwinn/Bertilino PO: Goetz SL: Luke Run 940610 was in support of Mini-Proposal #055 - Study of Core Particle Transport. This run was intended to use gas puffing as a means of determining transport coefficients (D's and v's). Some data was obtained for this cause (see the run_summary_940610). Troubles today were with the vertical position control. In order to remove the upper x-point from the vacuum vessel, the EF2U was programmed with a big change ( see phys_op_summary_940609). This change causes a glitch in the vertical position. This glitch is survivable if it remains less than 4-5 cm. To get around this glitch, the turn-on of RXL control was delayed and the vertical position ramp was made more gentle. These changes appeared to work and together with extended pulse lengths, adequate discharges for data collection were obtained. The problem with this delay of the RXL turn-on is that the lower x-point forms inside the inner nose of the divertor and the discharge is limited on the nose for a long time. ZXL control was exhibited, but with a long equilibration time and what appears to be an offset of ~2cm from the nominal position. Work still needs to be done on these 'divertor' controllers as most of the shaping has been done 'manually' with the IC_* controllers for a plasma current of 0.6MA. Engineering today: Computer troubles today (SHAPE was disconnected from the net accidently) lost some time waiting for the reboot. Scorecard: 29 shots = 26 plasmas + 2 fizzles + 1 dud Shot summary for Run 940610 Reload of 940609011 Changes: more PULSE_GAS_3 after 0.4 to increase density turn on CLEARIN from 0.42 to 0.50sec @ -.005 Shot change result ____ _____ ______ 1 see above dud 2 IC_EF4 = -1040A; P_0=1.1e-5 plasma 3 IC_EF2U ramp gets to -3000A @ 0.55sec; ZCUR ramp to -.015 @ 0.5sec plasma 4 add 43V x 0.02sec pulses on PULSE_GAS_3 at 0.65 and 0.75 IC_EF1L to +450 at 0.5 and -100 @ 0.6 plasma 5 remove 5V from each of the PULSE_GAS_3 puffs; add 38Vx0.01sec pulse @ 0.85 to PULSE_GAS_3 plasma 6 Extend Ip flat-top to 1.1sec; reduce first puff width to .015; reduce 2nd and 3rd puffs by 5V; EF2U ramp to -3000@0.6; ZCUR ramp from 0.36 to 0.46 plasma 7 ramp down PULSE_GAS_3 during flat-top; all puffs now .01s wide plasma 8 puffs on PULSE_GAS_3 now at 0.7, 0.8, and 0.9 sec; ramp on PULSE_GAS_3 steeper; ZCUR ramp from 0.32 to 0.42sec plasma 9 ZXL ramp from -.005 @ 0.5sec to -.01 @ 1.1; make PULSE_GAS_3 ramp less severe; turn CLEARIN gain on a little earlier plasma 10 ZXL drawn to -.01 @ .75sec; IC_EF2L to -900A @ 0.4 (was -1150) plasma 11 reload 940610009 fizzle 12 IC_EF4 to -1035A plasma 13 lower PULSE_GAS_3 between 0.1 and 0.3 plasma 14 stairstep on the RXL gain beginning at 0.6; ZCUR ramp from 0.58 to 0.65sec plasma 15 lower PULSE_GAS_3 after each puff; raise PULSE_GAS_3 early; ZXL to -.01 @ 0.8 plasma 16 extend pulse length to 1.2sec; PF inversion times = 1.5sec; extend EF1's and EF2's to 1.35sec; add 4th pulse to PULSE_GAS_3 @ 1.sec; move 3rd pulse on PULSE_GAS_1 to .620sec plasma 17 extend RCUR, ZCUR, ZXL, RXL, and CLEARIN to 1.2sec; delicate tweaks to PULSE_GAS_3 plasma 18 turn on RXL starting @ .56; TF invert to 1.3sec; more volts to 4th pulse on PULSE_GAS_3 plasma 19 RXL turning on at .58 plasma 20 Reload 017; add gas early to PULSE_GAS_3 plasma 21 voltage programming on EF2L to 0. @ .45sec; overlap gain turn off for IC_EF2L with turn on of RXL; up volts early on PULSE_GAS_3 plasma 22 slow down ramp in ZCUR plasma 23 RXL on @ 0.5; ZCUR ramp much slower; IC_EF2L more negative for longer plasma 24 more volts on PULSE_GAS_3 to up density plasma 25 add 5th gas puff of 40V x .01sec @ 1.1sec; lower 1st pulse to 12V plasma 26 RXL=+.005 from 0.6 to 1.2; ZXL=-.015 from .72 to 1.2 plasma 27 reload 940610025 fizzle 28 P_0=1.2e-5 plasma 29 lower PULSE_GAS_3 early; first puff to .725; second puff gone; third puff is now .03sec wide @ .85 plasma |

| Jun 10 1994 08:11:03:770AM | Tom Luke | Today's run will be devoted to the study of core particle transport
through gas modulation experiments. We will be trying to run diverted in order that we can better compare measured baseline coefficients with those of detached plasmas. There will be an attempt at scanning in density and plasma current with several shots at each pair of parameters. A few limited shots at the same plasma parameters will be done to compare transport during diverted and limited operation. | |
