Description: Session Leader's Run Summary 940621

The goal of the run was to test the hypothesis that Li pellets improve wall
conditioning and lead to reduced H-mode power threshold. Given the small
air leak, it was unlikely from the outset that we would get H-modes and
indeed, we did not. First, we started with shot 940617018 with EF1 and EF4
waveforms from 931027035 and 800 kA of plasma current. It was a good start
and we slowly adjusted things to try to get larger gaps from the inner wall
and outboard limiter. A sign error lost us several discharges as we also
tried ramping down the TF to reduce the threshold, which led to disruptions
because the plasma was pushed against the inner wall while we were trying to
divert it as well. Finally, by shot 11, we had the correct sign on the inner
gap, but were then plagued by vertical disruptions. Shot 12 was O.K., but
no H-modes were found. Then, shot 13, which was not changed, had very little
gas and lots of runaways for 0.4 sec. Repeating the shot went O.K., but was
still rather disruptive. Then, I decided to inject Li pellets in the hope
that Li wall conditioning might clean up the machine. When the pellets were
injected at 0.4 sec before the plasma diverted, they did not lead to
disruptions even when two pellets were fired out of the same barrel
mistakenly on shot 16 and the line integrated density reached nearly 4 x 10**20
m**-2. But, each time we injected a large pellet (nominally 1.5 x 10**20
electrons) into a diverted discharge (at 0.5 sec or 0.9 sec), the plasma
disrupted shortly after the pellet. This may indicate that the equilibrium of
the diverted discharge is still not very robust, since similar discharges last
year did not disrupt with this size pellet.
Then, the RF was added from 0.6 to 0.8 sec on shot 15 and they tried to
couple in up to 1.5 MW of power. For short periods of time, they achieved that
power level, but the RF was constantly tripping out due to rapid changes in the
coupling. We then tried combining Li pellets and RF for many discharges
with little success in that many disrupted early and no H-modes were found.
Finally, we tried the last three shots copying 940616004, which was an inner
wall limited H-mode with RF. The plasma disrupted at 0.5 sec after a Li
pellet on shot 24, then shot 25 went well without Li and 1.2 MW of RF was
successfully coupled. On the last shot, we tried pulling the plasma off of
the inner wall and it disrupted at 0.4 sec.

Overall, except for a slow start with a power supply problem and a
disconnected rogowski cable, the machine ran well. However, no H-modes were
found. In that many of the discharges were well above the P/S/(neBt) power
threshold sometimes by as much as a factor of two by running at low density
and we still found no H-modes, I feel that the air leak has ruined the
quality of the discharges and made it very difficult to get H-modes until we
can close up the leak and clean up the machine. Nonetheless, the plasmas ran
o.k, except that every one disrupted for one reason or another, so some
programs may succeed with these machine conditions if the machine cleanliness
is not very critical.

Physics operator summary for 940621

Run 940621 was in support of Mini-Proposal #038 - Lithium Conditioning and
Ohmic H Modes. This run started with divertor discharges and lithium pellets
were fired to condition the walls. The H-mode threshold was to be investigated.

Shot 940617018 was the shot loaded to be the starting shot. Steve Horne had
prepared this shot with NL_07 on wire 9 in segment 2 to try and do density
feedback. Changes were made to the EF1's and the ZCUR programming to try and
mimic shot 931027035. The plasma current was increased to 0.8MA and the
flat-top shortened to 1.0sec to allow for more shots. TF invert time moved
to 1.1sec and PF invert time to 1.3sec.

The discharges were plagued by an oscillation in the z-position for most of
the day. These discharges were running at a z of -.03m. Adding extra gain
to the chopper controlled ZCUR wires did not help the situation. By easing off
on the elongation (using EF1's) and the ZXL position, shots 940621022 and
940621023 made it well into the ramp-down phase. Most shots disrupted early
due to pellets, general filth, and high elongation (although this meant that
kappa was only greater than 1.6). The RXL position was oscillating a bit today
and the drawn waveform was changed to reflect the fact that the divertor
was being pulled earlier and that the x-point didn't need to be held outside
early in the discharge.

The early part of the run was plagued by a small inner gap. This was finally
corrected when the operator realized that the drawn waveform was for -.01m
instead of +.01m. Once this was realized, plasmas with good inner and outer
gaps were routinely obtained. There were changes made to help out the
elongation during ramp-down. These changes happened to be in the wrong
direction, so if any of these shots are used, change the EF1 ramps to give
lower elongation not higher.

Density feed-back was not tried today as the offset coming from TCI was
not stable. Be careful with the offset typed into the NL_07 controller
because it varied during the day and it is unknown as to which value is
left there and whether it is correct.

The last three shots (24, 25, 26) were limited discharges. This was an
attempt to get any kind of H-mode. None were obtained.

An air leak to the vacuum vessel was opened up in the p.m. on 940619 which
may have affected the quality and usefulness of the discharges obtained today.

Engineering today: The bus rogowski for EF1L was disconnected and a firing
switch on the OH1 supply was not turned on. This cost the first two
shots of the day as OH1 charged through the resistor and did not
commutate.

Scorecard: 26 shots = 24 plasmas + 2 p.s. duds

Session Leader Comments
Jun 21 1994 09:36:57:090AMJoseph SnipesH-mode run with Li pellets
First, we will try to get diverted plasmas at 800 kA by copying most of the
waveforms from 940617018, but using the EF1 and EF4 programming from an early
ohmic H-mode shot 931027035. If we manage to get decent plasmas with the leak
that we have, we will first try to get ohmic H-modes without Li pellets and
then try again with Li pellets to see if they help lower the power threshold.
If H-modes are not forthcoming, we may try ramping the TF down or we may try
using high RF power to get into H-mode.

Jun 21 1994 10:42:07:450AM940621003Joseph SnipesPlasma! Looks close to what I want.

Jun 21 1994 10:42:53:300AM940621004Joseph SnipesShot 4
Not bad. Need to reduce the density and increase inner wall gap.

Jun 21 1994 11:20:23:410AM940621005Joseph SnipesShot 5
Looks pretty good. No H-mode.

Jun 21 1994 11:21:44:860AM940621006Joseph SnipesShot 6
Added Ar on the previous shot. Disrupted earlier at 0.8 sec.

Jun 21 1994 11:27:34:320AM940621007Joseph SnipesShot 6
Added Ar on the previous shot. Disrupted earlier at 0.8 sec.
Well above the P/S/(neBt) threshold up to 0.06.

Jun 21 1994 11:43:53:360AM940621007Joseph SnipesShot 7
Not bad shot. Disrupted late. Move TF inversion to 0.9 sec. Try to fill
in the density droop as the plasma goes diverted. Still well above the
H-mode power threshold.

Jun 21 1994 11:59:32:360AM940621008Joseph SnipesShot 8
Not bad shot. Disrupted late. Still no sign of H-mode.
Try moving TF inversion to 0.5 sec.

Jun 21 1994 12:30:57:620PM940621010Joseph SnipesShot 10
The inner gap gain had the wrong sign. Goetz will correct it for the next
shot. So, we will return to TF inversion at 0.9 sec.

Jun 21 1994 12:50:31:410PM940621011Joseph SnipesShot 11
Disrupted at 0.8 sec. Inner and outer gaps look better at 2.5 to 3 cm each.
Plasma goes vertically unstable and then disrupts.

Jun 21 1994 12:57:20:640PM940621012Joseph SnipesShot 12
A bit better, but disrupted at 0.94 sec. Good gaps, but still no sign of
H-mode. Density was a bit higher between 0.4 and 0.7 x 10**20 /m**2.

Jun 21 1994 01:24:55:860PM940621013Joseph SnipesShot 13
Hard x rays. Plasma seems to have hit something early and was disruptive
throughout its 0.4 sec.

Jun 21 1994 01:46:53:500PM940621014Joseph SnipesShot 14
Disrupted at 0.65 sec. Very dirty! It seems that the leak is overcoming the
experiment.

Jun 21 1994 04:52:05:420PM940621024Joseph SnipesShot 24
Large Li pellet at 0.5 sec. Disrupted at 0.52 sec with a locked mode.

Jun 21 1994 05:00:50:600PM940621025Joseph SnipesShot 25
No pellets (empty chamber). Good RF heating up to 1.2 MW

Jun 21 1994 05:06:08:810PM940621026Joseph SnipesShot 26
Attempt to pull it off the inner wall to limit on the divertor nose failed.
Disrupted at 0.4 sec.
Overall, the machine ran quite well, but the goals of the experiment were not
met, presumably because the machine is dirty due to the air leak. We just
weren't very lucky this time.
