Session Leader Summary - Run 940622

SL - Golovato
PO - Takase
EO - ?????? (i don't remember)

Goals - ICRF heating run

1) couple high power to diverted plasmas.
2) get fast scanning probe data w/ and w/o rf.
3) get first CX data (diagnostic checkout). Not accomplished.

The run was very successful. We started with diverted shot 940617018. Good diverted
plasmas were achieved at high elongation (kappa=1.7) with good inner (1.5-2cm) and
outer (~2cm) gaps. These shots were almost double null and the x-point was high.
Density feedback was tried for the first time and basically worked. It was on from
shot 9 on and was adjusted after shots 13-14, which disrupted around OH crossover.
Bringing the density up more slowly through this period cured the problem. Shots
15, 18, 23 and 25 had no rf and disrupted early, during the time the rf would have
been on. Shot 15 disrupted after the rf shut off early. Shot 25 disrupted just
before the rf came on. For shots 26-28, the rf was moved 50 ms earlier and did not
disrupt. The rf seemed to be having a stabilizing effect on the VDEs.

Hydrogen puffing was done on shots 8-20 with larger puffs on shots 13-20. There was
a visible density rise at about 600 ms which was attributed to the H2 puff. We were
probably puffing too hard. Loading was good, about 6-8 ohms. The poster shot for
icrf heating of a diverted plasma was shot 6. Ti went from 1.5 to 2.5 kev (hirex
and neutrons), Te went from 2 to 2.7 kev (peak of ece polychrometer channel 5
calibrated from michelson central Te before rf), and stored energy went from 35
to 65 kj from efit (diamagnetic signal shows delta_Wp of 35 kj). The rf power was
1.5 mw and ne_bar was 1.2e20 m-3.

Good shots were: 1-12, 16-17, 19-22, 24, 26-28

Good rf-heated shots were: 2-7, 8?, 16-17, 19-22, 24, 26-28

Early disruption (around OH crossover): 13-14 (related to density feedback)

Mid-shot disruption: 15, 18, 23, 25 (note that these shots had no rf)

Shot accounting: 28 plasmas

940622 RF heating of diverted plasmas (piggyback: density feedback)

Before the run, it was noted that there was an "air puff" into
the vessel after ECDC was turned off.

We started out with 940617018 with minor modifications.
These diverted plasmas were stable, reasonably looking divertor
plasmas with approximately correct strike points and matched
the ICRF antenna reasonable well. We had two shots (002 and 006)
that ramped all the way down, but we could use some improvements
on controlled rampdown. Shot 028 had some improvements (suggested
by Ian) programmed in, but disrupted before rampdown. There is
evidence that in addition to startup assist, RF helps stabilize
the plasma (see Session Leader's summary).

Density feedback now works successfully.

Jun 22 1994 09:19:37:270AMSteve GolovatoRun - 940622 - rf run

Goals -

1) couple high power to diverted plasmas.
2) get fast scanning probe edge profiles with and without rf,
limited and diverted.
3) get first chaarge exchange data (diagnostic checkout)

Jun 22 1994 09:20:16:780AM940622001Steve Golovatofiducial shot ran well but rf interrupted, tuning wasn't chosen for
this shot.

Jun 22 1994 09:38:45:950AM940622002Steve GolovatoShot 940622002 - good diverted shot, inner gap a little small, 1.5cm.
loading about 6 Ohms, 1 MW rf power, 28 kV.

Jun 22 1994 09:49:36:040AM940622003Steve GolovatoShot 940622003 - tweeked up rf power, tuning was very good last shot,
rho_V =.07-.14 last shot.

another good shot, 1.1MW, 31kV.

Jun 22 1994 10:07:03:620AM940622004Steve GolovatoShot 940622004 - tweeked up power, added ramp to try to keep power
constant during pulse. between 600-800ms equilibrium goes from
upper null to double null to lower null divertor, get bursts on h_alpha
during this time.

Jun 22 1994 10:24:09:070AM940622005Steve GolovatoShot 940622005 - more power. another good shot, 1.4MW,35kV
desnity about half of last shot for some reason, loading
a little lower, 5.7Ohms.

Jun 22 1994 10:53:27:980AM940622006Steve GolovatoShot 940622006 - 1.4MW, 36kV. fast scanning probe scanning at
750ms (with rf) and 900ms (after rf).

Jun 22 1994 11:06:45:730AM940622007Steve GolovatoShot 940622007 - low density shot again. 1.5MW, 36kV.
delta(Ti)=1000eV from hirex and neutrons.
delta(Te)=500eV.

Jun 22 1994 11:31:24:110AM940622008Steve GolovatoShot 940622008 - loading only 5 Ohms, rf interrupting., 38kV.

Jun 22 1994 11:45:55:540AM940622009Steve GolovatoShot 940622009 - trying density feedback this shot.
also moved plasma out a little. lots of rf interrupts, 38.5kV
try tuning a little.

puffig H2 for the last few shots, increase for next shot.

Jun 22 1994 12:29:58:410PM940622010Steve GolovatoShot 940622010 - rf interrupting, lower power, but still 39kV.
tune a little more.

Jun 22 1994 12:48:03:980PM940622011Steve GolovatoShot 940622011 - rf still interrupts. density feedback appears to be
working. rasie density to get loading up, lower rf voltage.

Jun 22 1994 12:48:31:780PM940622012Steve GolovatoShot 940622012 - repeat of 11,

Jun 22 1994 12:59:04:680PM940622013Steve GolovatoShot 940622013 - disrupted starting at 400ms.

Jun 22 1994 01:11:40:580PM940622014Steve GolovatoShot 940622014 - same as previous shot, having problem at oh crossover,
current never come out of hesitation. seems related to density feedback
which comes on too hard at 300ms. we both icreased gain and increased
density level, need to bring up density more slowly.

Jun 22 1994 01:28:36:820PM940622015Steve GolovatoShot 940622015 - worked. but short rf pulse 40ms, 1.7MW. had
fpa screen current overload. density higher as programmed.

Jun 22 1994 01:46:14:130PM940622016Steve GolovatoShot 940622016 - loading higher, 8 ohms. 1.8MW, 33kV at higher
loading.

Jun 22 1994 01:48:47:730PM940622016Steve GolovatoShot 940622016 - loading higher, 8 ohms. 1.8MW, 33kV at higher
loading.

Jun 22 1994 02:18:57:450PM940622017Steve GolovatoShot 940622017 - good shot, rf still interrupts occasionally.
density appears to drop during rf, as does h_alpha.

Jun 22 1994 02:29:22:000PM940622018Steve GolovatoShot 940622018 - no rf, BiRa didn't initialize. good baseline shot for
scanning probe. disrupted early, at 810ms.

Jun 22 1994 03:05:37:960PM940622019Steve GolovatoShot 940622019 - good shot, many rf interrupts. lower power and take
another.

Jun 22 1994 03:07:10:830PM940622020Steve GolovatoShot 940622020 - lower pwer still interrupts. bump in density may
be H2 puff which is larger than we think.

Jun 22 1994 03:28:08:390PM940622022Steve GolovatoShot 940622022 - increased inner gap on this shot.
didn't see much of an effect, increase it some more (5mm increments
of clearin).

Jun 22 1994 03:49:14:550PM940622023Steve GolovatoShot 940622023 - no rf, shot disrupted at 770ms.
both shots wihtout rf have disrupted early, during the time the
rf would have been on.

Jun 22 1994 03:50:22:040PM940622023Steve GolovatoShot 940622023 - inner and outer gaps larger, x-point a little high.

Jun 22 1994 04:02:56:430PM940622024Steve GolovatoShot 940622024 - shot ran, inner and outer gaps 2cm, kappa=1.7.
rf 1.3 MW with some interrupts, loading 6 ohms. no disruption
unitl current rampdown. RF PREVENTS DISRUPTIONS!!!

Jun 22 1994 04:08:19:350PM940622025Steve GolovatoShot 940622025 - plasma disrupted before rf,675ms.
rf pulse shortened 50ms so scanning probe sweep at 950ms has no
rf effect.

Jun 22 1994 04:40:06:310PM940622026Steve GolovatoShot 940622026 - rf pulse 650-850ms. lower power.
ran well, plasma and rf. good scanning probe data.

Jun 22 1994 05:02:24:610PM940622027Steve GolovatoShot 940622027 - good shot, still disrupting at beginning of rampdown.

Jun 22 1994 05:03:04:720PM940622028Steve GolovatoShot 940622028 - disrupted at 900ms after rf pulse.
