| We will be calibrating the Big beast and the small beast if it's behaving. We will start with reproducible shots (I made my sacrifice to the Alcator Gods this morning), approximately 10-12 if everything goes well. Afterwards we will attemptto "calibrate" the hydrogen row (H to D ratio) by puffing/injecting various amounts of hydrogen into the machine. 950110001 Usual OH/Chopper Tuesday morning test. Found small leak in E port (Argon), port now pumped. 002 First attempt, Dud 003 First plasma, needs little tweaking to avoid disruption on the way down. 004 Good one, almost identical, still disrupted on the way down 005 Another good one, very much the same, disruption much later. 006 Fizzle, almost made it. Conditions changed? 007 Good, density about the same as previous ones. 008 Good, a tiny change in density towards the end. 009 Good, density pretty close. First signs of signal in Beast Junior (TCX, K port) 010 Good, still holding density. Beast Junior gets good signal. Some Preamps to be fixed before comparing temperature. 011 Still holding, good. Moved to calibrate second row in analyzer. 012 Density still the same. A few more.... 013 Good stuff, the streak is continuing. 014 Good, density holding. 015 Plasma, pretty similar, although many small changes, and "big" injection early. 016 Good plasma, density the same as before. Some injections again, origin ??? 017 Good, density very flat. Last point of reproducible sequence. 018 Good, nominal density the same, Hyd. puff at 0.7 sec. Observed a 25% increase in NL, very visible in the NPA signal. 019 Good, nominal density the same, Hyd. puff at 0.6 sec. Smaller increase in NL, visible in the NPA signal. Small Li pellet injected at 1.1 sec. 020 Good, still same nominal density, Medium H puff. 021 Good, Smaller Hydrogen puff, just visible in the NPA. Medium Li pellet at 1.1 sec. 022 Good, Larger Hydrogen puff, up to 60 msec long, feedback catching on with puff. 023 Good, replaced puff with ~20% H in prefill. Line still full with D so no appreciable H in plasma. 024 Same than 023, no visible change. 025 Purged line for prefill, in plenum approximately 22% of H. Got fizzle. Changed prefill pressure a little bit. 026 Purged line for better/updated H ratio of approx 22%. Probably the amount of H in the machine will be lower. Saw some H tail ions in the end of the shot. 027 Repeat 026, nice plasma. Tail ions also. 028 Dud, field config. wrong? 029 Good plasma, Lower prefill concentration of H, ~13% probably lower in machine. 030 Good plasma. Lower density to 5e19 Nl. No Hards observed, radiated power reasonable. 031 Good plasma, lower density to 4e19 Nl. No hards, funny end. 032 Good, density to 7e19, A good sequence. And a good day. Overall, the goals have been achieved, we should be able to cross-calibrate the internal channels of the Beast in F port. We also got precious info about the Hydrigen measurements and we were able to get some basic data from the other analyzer (Beast Junior in Kport). |

| Physics Operator Summary for 11/10/95 MP 62A Calibration of CX diagnostics Session Leader: Boivin Physics Operator: Wolfe Eng. Operators: Bertolino/Daigle The goal of the run was to get reproducible diverted discharges at low density for calibration of the PCX and TCX diagnostic systems. Shots with D2 only, H2 secondary puff, and mixed puff and fill were required to calibrate the mass differentiation. Piggyback experiments included Li pellet injection to check out the cigar detector, a vertical scan of the ECE beam, and RF conditioning of the E-port RF antenna. All of these were accomplished. From the operational standpoint this was a pretty routine run. Segment 2 from 941221005 was loaded, and the P gain on the fast ZCUR dropped by a factor of 2 to account for the reduced series resistor on the chopper. Startup was the same as we ended up with on 950106. Some tuning was done on the rampdown, basically extending the ramps on everything. Shots 3 and 4 disrupted early in rampdown, with high radiation levels but no obvious injections. This was cured by slowing the Ip ramp down and holding the density up until .95 sec and then ramping the NL04 down more slowly. Some very late vertical instabilities (around 1.45 sec) were more or less fixed by not pushing RCUR in so hard at the end. Shot 1 was the first-day-of-the-week OH test; the chopper was run as well. Shot 2 was the first plasma try. It failed due to the EF1 problem noted below. Shot3-17 were constant shots with NL04 programmed to 6e19, except for tweaks to the ramp-down (see logbook under PHYSICS_OPERATOR for details) Shots 18-22 had H2 puffs (B-side-upper) at different levels. In addition, there were Li pellets on shots 19 and 21. Shots 23-24 used a mixed puff 20% H2 in A-side, but without having purged the line. There was no sign of H above background on these, so the line was probably still all D2. Shots 25-27 were 22% H2 in the A-side plenum after purging the line; 25 fizzled at a 1.8e-5 fill and the gas was lowered to 1.5e-5, which worked. Shots 28-32 were 13% H2 in the plenum, after re-purging. Shot 28 was a dud (!) at a fill of 1.5e-5, the others were back up to 1.7e-5 fill and ran. However, the null looked bad on 28, so it may not really have been the gas. Shots 29-32 were a small density scan: Shot NL_04 ---- ----- 29 6e19 30 5e19 31 4e19 32 7e19 Problems: -------- The fix on the EF1 supplies that was installed on Monday (a lower voltage Zener across the cap in the voltage feedback circuit) did not work; it resulted in clamping the voltage at 100V, which was insufficient to get to more than half the demand current (shot 2). This was removed at shot 3, and we got good startups as on Friday. On shot 8, a new 4.7V Zener was installed, and this also worked, although the supply is still not behaving properly. A minor PCS bug(feature) was uncovered. The loaded waveform for CLEARIN was invalid, because it called for too large a (negative) value during rampdown. However, this was not flagged until a change was made on the EDIT_WIRE screen. The waveform was then re-drawn to be within bounds on shot 15. Since the WAVEGEN outputs its maximum value under these circumstances, no harm was done by not recognizing the invalid waveform, but it probably should have been flagged at BUILD_ALL anyway. Scorecard: --------- Tests 1 Duds 2 (1 due to Power systems) fizzles 2 plasma 27 (2 disrupted on rampdown) -- shots 32 |

MP# 62A PCX Commissioning SL: Boivin PO: Wolfe Plan: Start from a modified 941221005 (see below) First establish a good discharge Repeat 10-12 times as identical as possible Second puff H in, increasingly more (5-7 shots) Third, if time allows a little scan in density (D only) Start from last shot and IMPORT SEG #2 from 941221005 Cut P gain on ZCUR 3 from 9 to 4 to compensate fro lowered resistor on Chopper circuit. Pre-op problems: Couldn't get ECDC on because of an unclearable gas fill fault. Finally tracked down that TORVAC was seeing the STATE as ABORT instead of TEST. After some cycling of STATE machine, TORVAC finally picked up the right STATE (Network Error). Discharge cleaning start at 07:30 Second problem: Ion gauge on TMP2 was dead? It seems to have fixed itself now. There has been a mod to the EF1 supplies: A 4V Zener across the feedback cap in the error integrator replacing an 8V Zener. Looking at Vinnie's error scope on shot 950106005 we see traces that still don't make complete ssense - large negative error implying supply giving more voltage than requested. Have to keep an eye on this. | |

Try for plasma. Startup from last shot Friday (I hope); Seg 2 from 941221005 with P gain on ZCUR 3 reduced by about a factor 2. Enable Ar puff (3psi in plenum) Fill = 1.5e-5 Note: The Ar leak showed up again. Childs went down to the cell to pump out the E-port seal. Dud EF1's never get close to demand. They look weird. It looks like the Zeners are too low. For next shot Vinnie will go back to the old configuration |
| Jan 10 1995 09:33:52:940AM | 950110003 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#950110003:
EF1s unfixed. The new Zeners had been clip-leaded in, so they were easy to remove. No other changes. Shot went - disruption on ramp-down. Some oscillation on EF1s - they had left the gain turned up; will adjust down next shot. |
| Jan 10 1995 09:49:55:950AM | 950110004 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#950110004:

No change, see if the line gets exchanged. No sign of H2. |

Purge the line and refill with the 80:20 mix. Now at 77.5:22.5 Fizzle. No ECE signal, but it does have a bounce on H-alpha. |

Drop the fill to 1.5e-5. That worked. Good signals on CX. RF got .25 MW; Rejean sees an H tail. |
| Jan 10 1995 04:14:35:190PM | 950110027 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#950110027:
Repeat. Similar. |
| Jan 10 1995 04:26:29:410PM | 950110028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#950110028:
Change mix on A-side to 87:13 Leave fill at 1.5e-5 Dud! Null looks bad, too much vertical field? |
| Jan 10 1995 04:35:17:650PM | 950110029 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#950110029:
Raise fill to 1.7e-5 and try again. Got it back. I don't really believe the gas did it. Null still looks pretty bad. RF gets to .5 MW |
| Jan 10 1995 04:43:04:770PM | 950110030 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#95011030:
Change density programming to NL4=5e19 It ran ok, got 5e19. No hards, bolo is ok. |
| Jan 10 1995 04:55:11:710PM | 950110031 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#95011031:
Change density programming to NL4=4e19 Looks good, got 4e19. |
| Jan 10 1995 05:07:55:730PM | 950110032 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#95011032:
Change density programming to NL4=7e19 Several injections, got NL5=7e19 ok. |
