Summary for Run 950302 - Dimensionless Scaling Comparisons
M. Greenwald

Run Plan
--------

The basic outline of the run are power scans at two fixed densities -
nebar = 1.5 and 3.0 e20 (nel ~ .9 and 1.8).

The other conditions are R= .67, a = .22, kappa = 1.65, Ip = 1.02 with
a SNB equilibrium. Inner and outer gaps should be about 1 cm.

We start with shot 950301026, with the current nudged down to 1 MA. We tweak
the density and equilibrium as needed from there. We start with the lower
density.

Once the equilibrium and density are established we should start increasing the
RF power to its maximum value. Steps of .5 MW are probably appropriate. The RF
waveform should be a simple square wave, the pulse length should cover most of
the flattop.

When we reach the maximum power at ne = 1.5, we will raise the density to
3.0 and repeat the power scan.

................

Not a great day. Lots of fizzles and disruptions. The E Port
transmitter/antenna worked well but there is still a problem with the
D port system. Thus RF power was limited to about 1.8 MW.
All the shots were at 1.0 MA, nebar = 1.5 e20, kappa = 1.7, we never
got to the higher density.

Good shots were

950302006 Prf = 0
950302008 Prf = 0
950302010 Prf = 0.8 MW
950302017 Prf = 0.5 MW
950302019 Prf = 0.5 MW
950302020 Prf = 1.1 MW
950302024 Prf = 1.1 MW
950302025 Prf = 1.8 MW
950302027 Prf = 1.5 MW
950302029 Prf = 1.6 MW

Started by copying shot 950301026 but with Ip = 1 MA and nel = 9 x 10^19
m^-2 (about 1.5 x 10^20 m^-3). Intent is to run high power ICRF in a
standard SNB equilibrium with kappa = 1.65 and about 1 cm inner and outer
gaps for two densities (1.5 x 10^20 m^-3 and 3.0 x 10^20 m^-3).

The run did not go very well being plagued with fizzles and disruptions.
The power supplies ran very well though. Nonetheless some useful shots
were obtained at the lower density. Two attempts at high density failed
before the RF could do very much. There were also problems with startup in
that too little gas led to runaways and disruptions but faster current
rise, while too much gas reduced the rate of rise of the current.

Physics Operator Comments
Mar 2 1995 08:38:13:590AMJoseph SnipesDimensionless scaling run to compare with DIII-D MP085 (MOD)
Starting with shot 950301026 but with Ip = 1.0 MA and nel = 9 x 10^19 m^-2.
Intend to run at highest possible ICRF power at two separate densities of
1.5 x 10^20 m^-3 and 3.0 x 10^20 m^-3 with SNB equilibrium, kappa = 1.65, and
about 1 cm inner and outer gaps.

Mar 2 1995 08:40:06:440AM950302001Joseph SnipesCopied shot 950301026 with Ip lowered to 1.0 MA and nel lowered to 9 x 10^19
m^-2. Prefill set to 2.0 x 10^-5 Torr.
Fizzle!

Mar 2 1995 09:08:42:970AM950302002Joseph SnipesRepeat with prefill to 2.2 x 10^-5 Torr. Got current rise up to nearly 300 kA
but there was a problem with the EFC coil that may have caused the disruption
at 0.13 sec.

Mar 2 1995 09:42:36:600AM950302003Joseph SnipesShot 3
Set prefill to 2.1 x 10^-5 Torr. Replaced some fuses in the EFC supply.
Plasma nearly reached 1 MA, but disrupted at 0.52 sec.

Mar 2 1995 09:43:44:100AM950302004Joseph SnipesShot 4
Fizzle.

Mar 2 1995 10:07:52:210AM950302005Joseph SnipesShot 5
Fizzle!

Mar 2 1995 10:14:30:800AM950302006Joseph SnipesShot 6
Lowered Br offset in segment 1 from 6.5 mT to 6 mT. Raised prefill to
2.2 x 10^-5 Torr.
Good shot. Disrupted in rampdown at 1.2 sec.

Mar 2 1995 10:57:50:490AM950302007Joseph SnipesShot 7
Density rise still too rapid early leading to a slow current rise on shot 6.
Reduced early gas puff from 0.05 to 0.1 sec. Tried moving RXU and ZXU in and
up, respectively at the end of the shot to keep the X point out of the vessel
during the rampdown. However, it may have been the 0.5 MW of RF at the
disruption on shot 6 that raised the radiated power too much as the density
dropped. Fizzle.

Mar 2 1995 11:10:12:380AM950302008Joseph SnipesShot 8
Reduced early gas puff to try to increase the rate of current rise.
Reduced density in the first half of the shot to 8.8 x 10^19 m^-2 to try to
get the requested density. Kept the density up after 1.2 sec to try to avoid
the disruption in the current rampdown.
Good shot, disrupted at 1.2 sec again.

Mar 2 1995 11:11:22:120AM950302009Joseph SnipesShot 9
Fizzle!

Mar 2 1995 11:32:50:120AM950302010Joseph SnipesShot 10
Reduced OH2 U and L voltage around 0.005 sec by a few volts at Horne's
suggestion to try to prevent fizzles.
Good shot. RF at 0.8 MW from 0.7 to about 1.1 sec. Disrupted in rampdown.

Mar 2 1995 11:38:24:700AM950302011Joseph SnipesShot 11
Corrected ZXL programming that had been programmed to move up when I had
intended to program ZXU to move up from shot 7 so that ZXU is now programmed
to move up while ZXL is programmed to move down during the rampdown.
Fizzle!

Mar 2 1995 11:45:37:270AM950302012Joseph SnipesShot 12
Repeat. Fizzle!

Mar 2 1995 11:57:21:280AM950302013Joseph SnipesShot 13
Raised prefill to 2.2 x 10^-5 Torr.
Fizzle!

Mar 2 1995 12:11:17:170PM950302014Joseph SnipesShot 14
Raised Br offset to 6.7 mT to improve breakdown.
Disrupted at 0.7 sec at 1 MA.

Mar 2 1995 12:44:04:510PM950302015Joseph SnipesShot 15
Reduced RCUR from 0.6675 to 0.665 m during the flattop to try to increase the
outer gap a bit, hopefully to reduce the moly influx.
Fizzle!

Mar 2 1995 12:45:57:820PM950302016Joseph SnipesShot 16
Fizzle!

Mar 2 1995 01:08:40:220PM950302017Joseph SnipesShot 17
Prefill set to 1.8 x 10^-5 Torr. Good shot. Disrupted in rampdown.

Mar 2 1995 01:09:33:750PM950302018Joseph SnipesShot 18
Fizzle!

Mar 2 1995 01:43:11:880PM950302019Joseph SnipesShot 19
Extended all shaping parameters out to about 1.3 sec. Very good shot ramped
all the way down.

Mar 2 1995 01:55:21:240PM950302020Joseph SnipesShot 20
Good shot. Disrupted at 1.17 sec.

Mar 2 1995 02:08:14:010PM950302021Joseph SnipesShot 21
Fizzle!

Mar 2 1995 02:19:58:470PM950302022Joseph SnipesShot 22
Runaway discharge. Disrupted just before 0.5 sec.

Mar 2 1995 02:22:07:660PM950302023Joseph SnipesShot 23
Raised prefill to 2.1 x 10^-5 Torr. Fizzle

Mar 2 1995 02:42:38:240PM950302024Joseph SnipesShot 24
Lowered Br offset from 6.7 mT to 6.2 mT. Good shot! Ramped down to less than
0.3 MA before disrupting at 1.5 sec.

Mar 2 1995 02:54:04:230PM950302025Joseph SnipesShot 25
Repeat. Good shot. Disrupted at 1.0 sec. High moly emission during RF.
RF power up to about 1.9 MW but decreasing during the shot.

Mar 2 1995 03:00:34:170PM950302026Joseph SnipesShot 26
Reduced prefill to 2.0 x 10^-5 Torr.
Fizzle!

Mar 2 1995 03:28:42:990PM950302027Joseph SnipesShot 27
Raised prefill to 2.1 x 10^-5 Torr. Reduced OH2 by 5 V at breakdown.
Good shot. RF up to 1.5 MW, ramped down to 1.49 sec before disrupting.
TF crowbar, blown fuse. Short delay.

Mar 2 1995 03:50:40:820PM950302028Joseph SnipesShot 28
Repeat. Fizzle!

Mar 2 1995 04:21:10:920PM950302029Joseph SnipesShot 29
Good shot. Disrupted at 1.2 sec at 0.9 MA.

Mar 2 1995 04:22:16:460PM950302030Joseph SnipesShot 30
Fizzle!

Mar 2 1995 04:41:02:890PM950302031Joseph SnipesShot 31
Lowered Br offset from 6.2 mT to 6.0 mT. Runaway discharge disrupted at 0.43
sec.

Mar 2 1995 04:53:33:440PM950302032Joseph SnipesShot 32
Raised EF3 voltage "front porch" from 50 V to 100 V from -0.012 to -0.003 sec.
New circuit boards installed in OH2 supply. Disrupted at 0.53 sec with some
hard x rays.

Mar 2 1995 05:18:11:200PM950302033Joseph SnipesShot 33
Increased early gas puff to try to avoid the hard x rays. Seems to have
worked, but the density went up too fast and led to a disruption at 0.65 sec.
