| Summary for Run 950302 - Dimensionless Scaling Comparisons M. Greenwald Run Plan -------- The basic outline of the run are power scans at two fixed densities - nebar = 1.5 and 3.0 e20 (nel ~ .9 and 1.8). The other conditions are R= .67, a = .22, kappa = 1.65, Ip = 1.02 with a SNB equilibrium. Inner and outer gaps should be about 1 cm. We start with shot 950301026, with the current nudged down to 1 MA. We tweak the density and equilibrium as needed from there. We start with the lower density. Once the equilibrium and density are established we should start increasing the RF power to its maximum value. Steps of .5 MW are probably appropriate. The RF waveform should be a simple square wave, the pulse length should cover most of the flattop. When we reach the maximum power at ne = 1.5, we will raise the density to 3.0 and repeat the power scan. ................ Not a great day. Lots of fizzles and disruptions. The E Port transmitter/antenna worked well but there is still a problem with the D port system. Thus RF power was limited to about 1.8 MW. All the shots were at 1.0 MA, nebar = 1.5 e20, kappa = 1.7, we never got to the higher density. | MP085 (MOD) Dimensionless Scaling Comparison with DIII-D Engineer in Charge: Vinny Bertolino Physicist in Charge: Joseph Snipes Session Leaders: Martin Greenwald and J. DeBoo Started by copying shot 950301026 but with Ip = 1 MA and nel = 9 x 10^19 m^-2 (about 1.5 x 10^20 m^-3). Intent is to run high power ICRF in a standard SNB equilibrium with kappa = 1.65 and about 1 cm inner and outer gaps for two densities (1.5 x 10^20 m^-3 and 3.0 x 10^20 m^-3). The run did not go very well being plagued with fizzles and disruptions. The power supplies ran very well though. Nonetheless some useful shots were obtained at the lower density. Two attempts at high density failed before the RF could do very much. There were also problems with startup in that too little gas led to runaways and disruptions but faster current rise, while too much gas reduced the rate of rise of the current. Shot 1: Fizzle 2: EFC failed at 0.1 sec, plasma disrupted vertically 3: Disruption at 0.52 sec. 4: Fizzle 5: Fizzle 6: Good shot. Disrupted in rampdown. 7: Fizzle 8: Good shot. | Mar 2 1995 08:38:13:590AM | Joseph Snipes | Dimensionless scaling run to compare with DIII-D MP085 (MOD)
Starting with shot 950301026 but with Ip = 1.0 MA and nel = 9 x 10^19 m^-2. Intend to run at highest possible ICRF power at two separate densities of 1.5 x 10^20 m^-3 and 3.0 x 10^20 m^-3 with SNB equilibrium, kappa = 1.65, and about 1 cm inner and outer gaps. | |
| Mar 2 1995 08:40:06:440AM | 950302001 | Joseph Snipes | Copied shot 950301026 with Ip lowered to 1.0 MA and nel lowered to 9 x 10^19
m^-2. Prefill set to 2.0 x 10^-5 Torr. Fizzle! |
| Mar 2 1995 09:08:42:970AM | 950302002 | Joseph Snipes | Repeat with prefill to 2.2 x 10^-5 Torr. Got current rise up to nearly 300 kA
but there was a problem with the EFC coil that may have caused the disruption at 0.13 sec. |
| Mar 2 1995 09:42:36:600AM | 950302003 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 3
Set prefill to 2.1 x 10^-5 Torr. Replaced some fuses in the EFC supply. Plasma nearly reached 1 MA, but disrupted at 0.52 sec. |
| Mar 2 1995 09:43:44:100AM | 950302004 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 4
Fizzle. |
| Mar 2 1995 10:07:52:210AM | 950302005 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 5
Fizzle! |
| Mar 2 1995 10:14:30:800AM | 950302006 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 6
Lowered Br offset in segment 1 from 6.5 mT to 6 mT. Raised prefill to 2.2 x 10^-5 Torr. Good shot. Disrupted in rampdown at 1.2 sec. |
| Mar 2 1995 10:57:50:490AM | 950302007 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 7
Density rise still too rapid early leading to a slow current rise on shot 6. Reduced early gas puff from 0.05 to 0.1 sec. Tried moving RXU and ZXU in and up, respectively at the end of the shot to keep the X point out of the vessel during the rampdown. However, it may have been the 0.5 MW of RF at the disruption on shot 6 that raised the radiated power too much as the density dropped. Fizzle. |
| Mar 2 1995 11:10:12:380AM | 950302008 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 8
Reduced early gas puff to try to increase the rate of current rise. Reduced density in the first half of the shot to 8.8 x 10^19 m^-2 to try to get the requested density. Kept the density up after 1.2 sec to try to avoid the disruption in the current rampdown. Good shot, disrupted at 1.2 sec again. |
| Mar 2 1995 11:11:22:120AM | 950302009 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 9
Fizzle! |
| Mar 2 1995 11:32:50:120AM | 950302010 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 10
Reduced OH2 U and L voltage around 0.005 sec by a few volts at Horne's suggestion to try to prevent fizzles. Good shot. RF at 0.8 MW from 0.7 to about 1.1 sec. Disrupted in rampdown. |
| Mar 2 1995 11:38:24:700AM | 950302011 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 11
Corrected ZXL programming that had been programmed to move up when I had intended to program ZXU to move up from shot 7 so that ZXU is now programmed to move up while ZXL is programmed to move down during the rampdown. Fizzle! |
