| Run 950321 Engineering operator: V. Bertolino/J. Daigle Phyics operator: J. SNipes Session leader: BLip Mini-proposal #80: "Effect of Separatrix strike point location on divertor detachment". We tried, and failed, to make a decent flat-plate divertor equilibria today. Starting at shot 14 we switched to vertical plate placement of the outer strike point and started the second half of today's program. The second half of the run was much more successful. I believe we have obtained the high density points needed to determine whether detachment extends beyond the outer divertor nose as the density is raised. For shot 34, the highest density shot, probe 8 does seem to be detached. Further analysis will be needed to verify this and to see whether this occurs at lower densities. We did obtain some very high densities (nl04=2.7e20). However, the power supplies had problems controlling the plasma towards the end of those shots. We had a number of shots with density in the range nl04=1.-1.4e20 in order to 'probe' parameter space where the high-pressure region at the divertor (the so-called 'death ray') occured. It disappears from the outer divertor for densities above nl04=1.3e20 (and below 1.0e20). There is also a pressure peak on the inner divertor which may also be greater magnitude than upstream. We have to check further with the mapping to the FSP to verify this. A summary shot by shot follows: shot 1: power test shot 2: disruption @ 500 ms. We didn't get a flat-plate for some reason. shot 3: We got the sweep of the strike point but because of some offset the sweep takes us from slot divertor to strike point on probe 8 and back. Otherwise things fairly normal with nl04=0.7e20. shot 4: disrupted at 500 ms. May be due to big injection. shot 5: disruption at 0.65 seconds. nl04=0.5e20. Strike point at the required spot. shot 6: fizzle shot 7: disruption shot 8: fizzle shot 9: disruption shot 10: fizzle shot 11: disruption - still appears to be a problem with power supplies. shot 12: fizzle shot 13: disruption, switch to vertical plate operation. shot 14: disruption with strike point low. Big MARFE shot 15: disruption shot 16: disruption with incredible HXRays shot 17: small amount of hard x-rays but otherwise the fisrt decent shot. Next shot we will adjust the STRKPSI sweep slightly and repeat, this time with a little He at the midplane in front of the new B-side shot 18: again fine. He injection worked, no plume observed. Will repeat for FSP shot 19: nl04=0.9e20, He puff visible, Mo injection at 0.6 seconds again like last shot. shot 20: another Mo injection around 600 ms. No He puff, FSP probe scan accomplished. nl04=1.0e20. shot 21: disruption at crossover - 350 ms. Try again with slower rate of rise of density. shot 22: shot went fine, nl04=1.1e20, He puff at midplane inner wall. B-side camera viewed He puff with H_alpha filter. FSP trace. shot 23: nl04=1.2e20. No He puff, FSP scan went fine. shot 24: nl04=1.3e20 (and creeping up slightly). FSP scan ok. shot 25: nl04=1.4-1.5 e20. detachment moving up the divertor shot 26: nl04=1.6 e20. detachment moving up the divertor shot 27: fizzle shot 28: nl04=1.8e20 by 800 ms. FSP went in ok. shot 29: nl04=2.e20. FSP scan ok but disruption at 1.0 sec. Next shot we will add divertor gas puff (private flux region - B26-019) to raise the density faster. shot 30: divertor gas puff at 30 PSI (1400 torr) through private flux region (B-26-019). Trigger for puff at 0.43 seconds for 100 ms. nl04=2.e20 with disruption again at 1 second. FSP scan ok. shot 31: Too much puff (150 ms with .33 sec trigger) and disruption at .55 seconds. Try again with the gas puffs spread out in time. shot 32: nl04=2.4e20. no FSP scan but we will repeat. Three divertor gas puffs: 0.33 sec, 0.43 sec, 0.53 seconds, each for 50 ms. Divertor pressure 70 mTorr. shot 33: nl04=2.3-2.4e20. FSP went in but we may have lost the data. shot 34: divertor gas puff triggered at same times but with the following pulse lengths: 0.65, 0.65 & 0.6 seconds. FSP scan at 0.75 seconds with disruption following at approx. shot 35: disruption, somehow a flat-plate shot was loaded in? shot 36: try for low density but disrupted. |

| Repeat of MP080 Strike Point Position Scan Engineer in Charge: Vince Bertolino Physicist in Charge: Joseph Snipes Session Leader: Bruce Lipschultz This run is intended to scan the density and modify the strike point position with both a flat plate divertor configuration and a vertical plate divertor configuration, both at the bottom of the vessel. We intend to complete both density scans at 0.8 MA and, if time remains, to repeat the vertical plate divertor scan at 1 MA. We copied shot 950202032, but raised the current to 0.8 MA and lowered the density to 7 x 10^19 m^-2. Also, RCUR was copied from shot 950202014. The flat plate configuration was incompatible with the programming we had copied from shot 950202014. Only one decent discharge was obtained in this configuration shot 3. Various attempts to get the strike point scan led to disruptions due to EF2 going to zero. This needs some thought and some work. The vertical plate configuration worked reasonably well and a pretty good density scan was obtained up to quite high densities of 2.6 x 10^20 m^-2. So, the run was partially successful, but did not complete the program. 36 shots, 30 plasmas, 5 fizzles, 1 test Shot 1: OH test shot. 2: Disrupted at 0.5 sec 3: Lowered slow ZCUR gain to 1.5. Good shot at 7 x 10^19 m^-2 4: Disrupted at 0.5 sec. 5: Disrupted at 0.65 sec. 6: Fizzle 7: Disrupted at 0.74 sec. 8: Fizzle 9: Disrupted at 0.7 sec. 10: Fizzle 11: Disrupted at 0.75 sec. 12: Fizzle 13: Disrupted at 0.71 sec. 14: Changed to vertical plate configuration. Engineering operator: V. Bertolino Phyics operator: J. SNipes Session leader: BLip Mini-proposal #80: "Effect of Separatrix strike point location on divertor detachment". We plan to continue flat-plate divertor syudies at 800 kA. Each shot will have constant density, the density varied from shot to shot over the range nl04 = 0.5 - 2. e20. | Mar 21 1995 03:47:05:080PM | 950321031 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 31
Density raised to 2.2 x 10^20 m^-2. NINJA puff moved to 0.4 sec. Disrupted at 0.55 sec. |
| Mar 21 1995 04:14:54:590PM | 950321032 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 32
Repeat. O.K. Disrupted at 0.99 sec. |
| Mar 21 1995 04:15:29:040PM | 950321033 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 33
Reduced Ip ramp to 0.85 MA at 1 sec. O.K. Disrupted at 0.94 sec. |
| Mar 21 1995 04:26:00:900PM | 950321034 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 34
Increased density to 2.6 x 10^20 m^-2. Disrupted at 0.86 sec. |
| Mar 21 1995 05:18:26:120PM | 950321035 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 35
Reduced density to 0.5 x 10^20 m^-2. Somehow PCS has a shot from earlier today loaded into it with the flat plate configuration. It disrupted at 0.23 sec. I did not load this! So, there is some problem with PCS here. |
| Mar 21 1995 05:19:45:850PM | 950321036 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 36
Reloaded shot 950321022. Set nl = 5 x 10^19 m^-2. Disrupted at 0.3 sec. |
