| Run 950524 1st day of 2nd harmonic He3 (D majority) heating @ 4T SL: Takase PO: Goetz EO: Bertolino/Daigle Plan: mainly scan density and He3 concentration starting from 4T, 0.7MA, nel_04=1.0e20 later try going up to 0.8MA Results: He3 2nd harmonic minority heating is a tricky heating scenario. It was expected that we might have difficulties demonstrating this scenario, but it turned out to be more difficult than we anticipated. We have tried a wide range of He3 concentrations, from almost 0% to almost 100%, in the density range nel_04 = 0.8-1.0e20. RF ran great, with very little cross-talk between the two antennas, suggesting that there is significant absorption. Unfortunately, the absorption does not appear to be on He3, but rather on H minority (with resonance way off-axis, around R = 0.50m). We know from our earlier TF scan that at 4.0T, H minority absorption does not result in any stored energy increase. There is also some indication of edge heating. As described in more detail in the physics operator's summary, we had problems with early disruptions (may have been related to early MARFE activity), as well as duds and fizzles (EF2L problem). Tomorrow: We will try to run at lower and higher density tomorrow, and also move the H resonance out of the plasma (drop the field to 3.5T). shot 01 pl disrupt @ 0.66sec, no He3 yet 02 fiz 03 pl no high power RF 04 pl I_p=0.7MA, R_gap=1.7cm, nel_04=1.0e20, no He3, 1MW ea from D&E no heating (as expected), density pump out (about 10%) 05 pl He3 puff 90V 0.5-0.55s, nel program 0.7->1.0 got density increment of 0.3 on nel_04, still have density pump out not much heating 06 pl I_p=0.8MA, He3 puff 90V 0.5-0.6s, nel program 0.7->1.0 got density increment of 0.45 on nel_04, still have density pump out HeII Ly_a = 6 07 pl nel program 0.5->0.8 disrupt @ 0.55sec 08 pl He3 puff 90V 0.5-0.6s + 50V 0.6-0.9s got density increment of 0.65 on nel_04 HeII Ly_a = 10 09 pl He3 puff 90V 0.65-0.75s + 50V 0.75-1.0s (RF pulse 0.75-1.0) HeII Ly_a = 15 10 pl He3 puff 90V 0.70-0.75s + 50V 0.75-1.0s got density increment of 0.4(?) on nel_04 HeII Ly_a = 15 (same as 09 during RF) 11 pl He3 puff 90V 0.70-0.75s + 0V 0.75-1.0s HeII Ly_a = 11 Ar on 12 pl no He3, nel program 1.0 HeII Ly_a = 7 13 pl no He3, nel program 0.8 disrupt @ 0.45sec 14 pl repeat disrupt @ 0.45sec 15 pl repeat nel_04=0.8, no He3 disrupt @ 0.88sec 16 pl He3 puff 90V 0.65-0.70s disrupt @ 0.41sec 17 pl repeat disrupt @ 0.45sec 18 pl repeat disrupt @ 0.46sec 19 pl repeat disrupt @ 0.47sec 20 pl reload shot 11 disrupt @ 0.66sec 21 pl 0.75MA, got plasma back He3 puff 90V 0.70-0.75s, nel program 0.5->1.0 (got nel=0.8 then slow rise) HeII Ly_a = 5 22 pl He3 puff 90V 0.65-0.70s, nel program 0.5->0.8 disrupt @ 0.84s 23 pl repeat disrupt @ 0.38s 24 dud repeat 25 pl repeat, He3 puff 90V 0.65-0.70s, nel program 0.5->0.8 got nel rise of 0.3 HeII Ly_a = 4 26 fiz 100% He3 after 0.3sec, nel program = 0.8 27 fiz repeat 28 dud repeat 29 pl nel_04=0.8, disrupt @ 0.80s 30 dud nel_04=0.6 31 fiz repeat 32 pl disrupt @ 0.36s |

| Physics operator summary for 950517 EO: Bertolino/Daigle PO: Goetz SL: Takase Run 950524 was in support of Mini-Proposal #115A - He-3 Second Harmonic Minority Heating. The goal of the MP is to explore He-3 second harmonic minority heating scenarios. Program for this run: - Set up a shot acceptable to the RF group with a toroidal field of 4T. - Explore the possibility of He-3 second harmonic heating Some things discovered today: 1) A reliable breakdown at 3.5T (continuing to ramp to 4T) was achieved. The current rises were very good, most being >= 0.1MA/0.03sec. After shot 024, problems with the EF2L supply messed up the null and the startup was unreliable (see shot summary below) 2) Watch out for rational q disruptions if the TF invert time is early in the rampdown. These lead to high halo currents. 3) Many, many, many unexplained disruptions occured today. Shots 009-012 were very nice shots. These shots were followed by disruptions in which no changes to the control system were made. Some disruptions occured early in the discharge (and were usually multiple disruptions) with feedback trying to recover the discharge. Some reasons that were floated to explain the disruptions were: multiple injections, the plasma rubbing somewhere new, power supplies, the walls out of deuterium (from the helium puffing), etc. I don't know if these disruption will ever be explained. 4) Shots 026-032 have the feedback for NL04 such that He-3 is the gas used. DO NOT use these shots unless a whole lot of He-3 is desired. ------ Engineering, computing, and diagnostics today: Beginning with shot 022, a problem with the EF2L supply occured. At times it appears that the supply is not following its demand. Diagnosis was difficult as some of the diagnostics on the supply are messed up. Engineering is working on it after the run. No data acquisition problems today. reload 950524011 Results: plasma - disr. @ 0.66 o.k. until 0.61sec - then density and current fall for an unknown reason |
