Run 950524
1st day of 2nd harmonic He3 (D majority) heating @ 4T

SL: Takase
PO: Goetz
EO: Bertolino/Daigle

Plan:
mainly scan density and He3 concentration
starting from 4T, 0.7MA, nel_04=1.0e20
later try going up to 0.8MA

Results:
He3 2nd harmonic minority heating is a tricky heating scenario.
It was expected that we might have difficulties demonstrating this scenario,
but it turned out to be more difficult than we anticipated.
We have tried a wide range of He3 concentrations, from almost 0% to almost
100%, in the density range nel_04 = 0.8-1.0e20. RF ran great, with very
little cross-talk between the two antennas, suggesting that there is
significant absorption. Unfortunately, the absorption does not appear to be
on He3, but rather on H minority (with resonance way off-axis, around R =
0.50m). We know from our earlier TF scan that at 4.0T, H minority absorption
does not result in any stored energy increase. There is also some indication
of edge heating.
As described in more detail in the physics operator's summary, we had
problems with early disruptions (may have been related to early MARFE
activity), as well as duds and fizzles (EF2L problem).

Tomorrow:
We will try to run at lower and higher density tomorrow, and also move
the H resonance out of the plasma (drop the field to 3.5T).

Physics operator summary for 950517

EO: Bertolino/Daigle
PO: Goetz
SL: Takase

Run 950524 was in support of Mini-Proposal #115A - He-3 Second Harmonic
Minority Heating. The goal of the MP is to explore He-3 second
harmonic minority heating scenarios.

Program for this run:
- Set up a shot acceptable to the RF group with a toroidal field of
4T.
- Explore the possibility of He-3 second harmonic heating

Some things discovered today:
1) A reliable breakdown at 3.5T (continuing to ramp to 4T) was achieved.
The current rises were very good, most being >= 0.1MA/0.03sec. After
shot 024, problems with the EF2L supply messed up the null and the
startup was unreliable (see shot summary below)
2) Watch out for rational q disruptions if the TF invert time is early
in the rampdown. These lead to high halo currents.
3) Many, many, many unexplained disruptions occured today. Shots 009-012
were very nice shots. These shots were followed by disruptions in
which no changes to the control system were made. Some disruptions
occured early in the discharge (and were usually multiple disruptions)
with feedback trying to recover the discharge. Some reasons that were
floated to explain the disruptions were: multiple injections, the
plasma rubbing somewhere new, power supplies, the walls out of
deuterium (from the helium puffing), etc. I don't know if these
disruption will ever be explained.
4) Shots 026-032 have the feedback for NL04 such that He-3 is the gas
used. DO NOT use these shots unless a whole lot of He-3 is desired.
------

Engineering, computing, and diagnostics today: Beginning with shot 022,
a problem with the EF2L supply occured. At times it appears that
the supply is not following its demand. Diagnosis was difficult as
some of the diagnostics on the supply are messed up. Engineering is
working on it after the run. No data acquisition problems today.

Scorecard: 32 shots = 25 plasmas + 4 fizzles + 1 CRYO dud + 2 duds

May 24 1995 01:14:39:110PM950524017John GoetzShot 950524017:
NL04 = 1.0e20 @ 0.35sec

Results:
plasma - disrupts @ 0.42
first disruption @ 0.42
a sucky shot

May 24 1995 01:15:15:710PM950524018John GoetzShot 950524018:
NL04 = 1.0e20 @ 0.4sec

Results:
plasma - disrupts @ 0.46
first disruption @ 0.42
a trapped MARFE maybe?!

May 24 1995 01:23:54:630PM950524019John GoetzShot 950524019:
NL04 = 1.0e20 @ 0.475sec
slow down CLEARIN ramp in beginning

Results:
plasma - disrupts @ 0.47
no pre-disruptions this time, but the density and Halpha
drop precipitously @ 0.44sec - a disappearing MARFE?!

May 24 1995 01:43:08:460PM950524020John GoetzShot 950524020:
reload 950524011

Results:
plasma - disr. @ 0.66
o.k. until 0.61sec - then density and current fall
for an unknown reason

May 24 1995 02:00:04:570PM950524021John GoetzShot 950524021:
IP = -750000

Results:
plasma - all the way down

May 24 1995 02:31:16:040PM950524022John GoetzShot 950524022:
PG2 = (90V x .05s) @ 0.65sec
slide NL04 notch 0.05s earlier

Results:
plasma - disrupts @ 0.84
density falls at 0.825; nothing obvious on this disruption

May 24 1995 02:32:07:330PM950524023John GoetzShot 950524023:
no changes

Results:
plasma - disrupts @ 0.38
current goes from 0.5 to 0.2MA at 0.19sec
nothing to explain this event either

May 24 1995 02:58:58:250PM950524024John GoetzShot 950524024:
no changes

Results:
DUD
EF2L not following its demand

May 24 1995 03:16:19:650PM950524025John GoetzShot 950524025:
no changes

Results:
plasma - disrupts @ 1.16
looks o.k.
EF2L seems to have fixed itself

May 24 1995 03:30:13:970PM950524026John GoetzShot 950524026:
copy in NL04 wire with D/He-3 feedback
at 0.3sec, make D/He-3 ratio = 0/1
NL04 = 0.8e20

Results:
fizzle - null is horrible
breakdown occurs when Br swings through zero at 0.011sec
EF2's out of balance again

May 24 1995 03:50:30:030PM950524027John GoetzShot 950524027:
instrument the EF2L supply

Results:
fizzle - breakdown @ .006 - null is poor - a lot of radial field
EF2L problem is not with CAMAC

May 24 1995 04:02:47:730PM950524028John GoetzShot 950524028:
swap a buffer board in the EF2L supply

Results:
dud
CRYO fault in PULSE shut off supplies

May 24 1995 04:36:16:120PM950524029John GoetzShot 950524029:
no changes

Results:
plasma - disrupts @ 0.79
lots of impurities when RF turns on
highly radiative

May 24 1995 04:58:18:230PM950524030John GoetzShot 950524030:
NL04 = 0.6e20

Results:
DUD - null opens up too soon

May 24 1995 04:58:55:600PM950524031John GoetzShot 950524031:
P_0 = 2.2e-5

Results:
fizzle - breakdown at .006 - no current rise

May 24 1995 05:10:30:580PM950524032John GoetzShot 950524032:
P_0 = 2.2e-5

Results:
plasma - disrupts @ .365
multiple disruption beginning @ 0.115
never could get the density in
