The goal of the run was to continue the search for better h-modes at 5.3 T,
better meanig higher h-factor, or at least longer elm-free phases.
Specifiically we proposed the following approaches.

(1) start with shot 950523017, a higher triangularity configuration,
vary outer gap to keep rf from tripping during h-mode.
(2) go to higher triangularity, at the expense of elongation and
running limited if necessary.
(3) density scan, revisit lower densities where thresholds are lower,
see how much power we can get in.

We tried the above and some other things but got neither higher h-factors
nor longer elm-free phases. We did get FSP and laser blowoff data. It seems
clear from the laser blowoff that particle confinement is strongly enhanced
and this causes both a fast density rise and impurity accumulation. Some
combination of these effects may be our current limitation. Brian
LaBombard has noted that we only get rf h-modes when the midplane neutral
pressure falls below 0.4 mtorr. This may be true before rf, in which
case we quickly go into elm-free h-mode, or it may fall during rf, in which
case we get h-modes later in the rf pulse when it falls below the "magic"
value of 0.4 mtorr. The new, improved 2pi bolomater is a sensitive diagnostic
of elms and can be used to evaluate h-mode quality.

We started out with shot 950523017 but the configuration with these settings
had an inner wall x-point, which it didn't have on 950523. We did not get
h-modes through shot 006 so we went back to our "standard" elm-free h-mode
shot (950523009) and got back the h-modes on shots 007-009. We the went back
to shot 006 and began tweaking it to get h-modes. By lowering the initial
nl04 to 1.35e20 from 1.5e20 and cutting off the gas voltage programming, we
got h-modes on shot 013. Shots 013-020 were a density scan down to 0.7e20.
The h-modes deteriorated with decreasing density with no h-modes at the lowest
density, even with 2,2 MW of power. We then tried to control the midplane
pressure by better mapping the SOL flux into the divertor. We got a highly
triangular plasma (ltriang=0.7) on shot 023 with the desired flux mapping,
but no better h-modes. This was done mainly by moving the upper x-point more
up. We then tried moving it down on shots 027 and 031, making the h-modes
worse. On shots 028 and 029 we tried extreme edge gas control. We fired in
a Li pellet and turned off the gas completely. On shot 028 the pellet didn't
fire and we got h-modes which held up the density even though the gas was off.
On shot 029, the pellet fired but we got no h-modes and the density fell to
nl04=0.5e20 by the end of the shot, with 2.8 MW of power.

Some suggestions include:

(1) a 2.6 T run to look at h-mode thresholds and factors. We have seen
good 2nd harmonic heating here and might learn a lot about B-field vs size
scaling.

(2) Boronization to control the Moly influx.

(3) Better gas control (divertor pumping, pellet fueling) to control the
density rise.

We have a summer to think about it.

MP078A ICRF H-mode Run

This run will take over from where we left off on 950523 and we will set up
with shot 950523017. ECDC was performed in deuterium for 1 hour and 45
min. before the run, then shut off by 7:45 am or so to allow the machine
to pump out before the run. The plan is to first start with our previous
good shot, 950523017 with relatively high triangularity, high density (nl =
1.4 x 10^20 m^-2), 1 MA, 5.3 T, and try to keep the RF power up and
maintain ELM-free H-modes. We will then scan the density down to as low as
nl = 8 x 10^19 m^-2. After spending a number of shots trying to increase
the ELM-free H-mode durations, we will then change to a limited or nearly
inner wall limited plasma shifted above the midplane with low elongation
and high triangularity. For this, we will start with shot 950526031,
shifting the plasma up and trying to increase the triangularity to attempt
to reach triangularities above 0.7. This requires running above the nose of
the divertor. If we succeed in getting decent plasmas under these
conditions, we will again scan the density to try to optimize ICRF H-modes
with high triangularity.

It was a very good run. We succeeded in accomplishing much of what
was planned. However, the H-modes were not significantly better than in
previous runs. We did learn some things about getting H-modes. The most
important thing appears to be that the midplane neutral pressure does indeed
correlate with getting the H-mode and that the midplane pressure correlates
with how much flux maps from the inboard to the outboard plate. By
comparing shots 26, 27 and 31, one sees that the more flux that maps around
from the inboard to the outboard plate, the lower the neutral pressure at
the midplane and the better the H-mode. This difference in the recycling
outweighed differences in the triangularity. Still, the ELM-free H-modes
only lasted at most 40 - 50 msec. The direction to head seems to be to
increase the inner gap, increase the amount of flux that maps around the
plasma from the inner to the outer plate, and then try to also increase the
triangularity beyond 0.7.

From the technical side, the machine ran quite well, though there
were a couple of problems. About shot 22, Earl noticed that the TF was at
5.1 T rather than 5.3 T. In fact, it had been low since shot 15. We spent
some time looking into it, but then decided to ask for more TF current to
get the field that we wanted. That worked fine until shot 31, when we
actually got 5.5 T. This problem should be looked into some more. There
was also a disruption caused by an EF1U fault on shot 29 that was resolved
immediately. There were 31 shots, 30 plasmas, and 1 Fizzle. There were no
warnings or strikes.

Shot 1 : Copied shot 950523017. Good shot. No H-mode with 2.3 MW
of RF
2 : Removed step in RCUR from 0.75 to 1.05 sec. Disrupted at
0.74 sec. Probably a moly injection at 0.69 sec.
3 : Try again. Good shot. No H-mode. RF at 2 MW (timing error).
4 : Moved ZXU up from 0.5 sec to 4.5 cm then up to 4.75 cm from
0.6 to 1 sec. Extended gas pre-programming on both A side
and B top valves to 1 sec. No H-mode with 2.3 MW of RF.
RF timing error.
5 : Moved ZXU up to 5 cm from 0.6 to 1 sec. Good shot. No
H-mode. RF up to 2.3 MW.
6 : Moved RXU out by 0.5 cm and ZXU up by 0.5 cm. Good shot. No
H-mode. RF up to 2.3 MW. Good configuration with high
triangularity.
7 : Reloaded shot 950523009. Good shot. ELM-free 0.8 - 0.85
sec then ELMy 0.9 to 1.01 sec.
8 : Moved ZXU up to 5.5 cm from 0.5 to 1 sec. Zirconium
injection at 0.94 sec. Good shot. ELM-free and ELMy
H-modes from 0.79 - 1.02 sec. Zirconium at 0.94 sec.
9 : Repeat. Good shot. ELMy H-mode from 0.79 - 0.95 sec.
10: Returned to shot 6 with a step in RCUR from 0.75 to 1.05
sec. No RF. No H-mode.
11: Repeat. Good shot. No H-mode.
12: Lowered nel to 1.4 x 10^20 m^-2. Good shot. Short H-mode
0.94 - 0.95 sec.
13: Reduced nel to 1.35 x 10^20 m^-2. Turned off
pre-programmed gas feed at 0.8 sec. Good shot. H-modes
0.88 - 0.92 and 0.99 - 1.01 sec.
14: Reduced nel to 1.25 x 10^20 m^-2. Turned off
pre-programmed gas feed at 0.75 sec. Good shot. 3 ELM-free
H-modes 0.85 - 1.01 sec.
15: Repeat to tune RF. Good shot. 4 ELM-free H-modes 0.85 -
1.01 sec.
16: Lowered nel to 1.1 x 10^20 m^-2. Good shot. In and out of
H-mode from 0.85 - 1.03 sec.
17: Lowered nel to 0.9 x 10^20 m^-2. Bad shot. Hard x rays
from the current rise. Disrupted at 0.38 sec.
18: Try again. Increased prefill to 1.9 x 10^-5 Torr. Bad
shot. Disrupted at 0.48 sec.
19: Reduced early gas a bit. OK shot. 2.2 MW of RF with
dithering. Very high radiated power.
20: Reduced nel to 7 x 10^19 m^-2. Bad shot. Disrupted at 0.6
sec.
21: Try again. Bad shot. Disrupted at 0.86 sec during RF.
22: Returning to shot 15 with B top enabled. RXL moved in 2 cm,
ZXL moved up 3 cm, and ZCUR moved up to +0.5 cm. ZXU moved
up by 2 cm to 7.5 cm. There is a problem with the TF in
that the field only reaches 5.1 T. The problem has been
there since shot 15. Short delay to investigate.
23: Prefill set to 1.7 x 10^-5 Torr. Good shot. 2 ELM-free
H-modes from 0.85 - 0.92 sec.
24: Prefill set to 1.8 x 10^-5 Torr. Changed ZXU controller
reference to 0.44 m and shifted the waveform to start at
-5 cm and ramp to + 5 cm. Good shot. Several H-modes from
0.81 - 0.99 sec.
25: Increased ZXU to 7.5 cm. Moved ramp in RXL to 0.45 sec.
Good shot. H-modes from 0.81 to 1.01 sec.
26: Increased nel to 1.4 x 10^20 m^-2. Good shot. H-modes from
0.82 - 1.01 sec.
27: Lowered ZXU to 0. No H-mode. RF up to 2.5 MW. No H-mode.
Neutral pressure much higher apparently prevented the
H-mode through changes in recycling.
28: Reloaded shot 26. Gas and density feedback shut off at
0.65 sec. Med Li pellet at 0.65 sec. No pellet. H-modes
from 0.82 - 0.97 sec.
29: Li pellet at 0.65 sec. 2.8 MW of RF. No H-mode. Disrupted
at 1.03 sec. EF1U fault at 1.0 sec.
30: Reloaded shot 26, then set ZXU to 2 cm. Fizzle.
31: Try again. Good shot. Two very short H-modes 0.83 - 0.84
