Run 951115 PCX Cross-calibration/Commisionning MP062A Hirex restart MP048 SL R. Boivin and J. Rice PO J. Snipes Eng V. Bertolino We are attempting to have a long series of reproducible shots in order to cross-calibrate the channels of the Perpendicular Charge-Exchange (PCX) (78 channels, 39 for each mass). Some of them were changed (and some fixed) over the summer break. The alignment was also slightly modified. By the same token we are restarting HIREX and verify internal alignment and try to debug the system. We will use a 0.8 MA, 5.3T shot with low(ish) density, anything near 5-6x10^19 nel, which can be easily reproduced. 951115 001 Shot went through nicely, density 8x10^19 a bit above request, we will try to reduce a bit. 002 Fizzle, attempt to lower density. Not sure why it fizzled. 003 Good shot, density is about right, Stay at this level. Very good signal on PCX. 004 Another good one, go for it Joe! 005 A good one, "natural" moly injection around 0.8 sec. 006 Still good, disruption on the way down. Not sure why? 007 Fizzle, result of disruption? 008 Oh well, another fizzle. 009 Actually a DUD, gas problem?? 010 Dud, trying to get the gas right. 011 Fizzle, not quite enough gas. 012 Good shot, increase pre-puff gas. 013 Fizzle. 014 Good shot, will have to keep an eye on the gas... 015 Fizzle, Cleaning the machine??? 016 Good shot, density still holding. 017 Good one, disrupted on the way down, we'll pay for that... 018 Fizzle, to be expected. Carbon really high. 019 Another fizzle, we'll get the machine cleaned someday. 020 Another fizzle. 021 Good Shot, carbon the problem, or simply gas?? 022 Fizzle. 023 Gas test only, using B top only. No Argon. 024 Another gas test. 025 Good shot, piece of moly junk at 0.9 sec, then disrupted on the way down. 026 Fizzle. | Diagnostic development run for HIREX and PCX 951115. Session Leaders: Rejean Boivin and John Rice Physics Operator: Joseph Snipes Engineer in Charge: Vince Bertolino Standard 0.8 MA, 5.5 T, medium density discharges throughout the day for checking out HIREX and PCX. Using the new pulse gas system with only a puff instead of prefill. The run went reasonably well. There were problems getting reliable current rises leading to quite a number of fizzles. The gas programming with a pre-puff instead of pre-fill has now been tuned up and should prove quite reliable for future runs. Still, the neutral pressure at breakdown needs to be watched carefully during the day because it seems that longer pre-puffs are required as the wall conditioning improves. The last shot, 34, was probably the best one to start from with a 9 msec flattop of the pre-puff. Now that the pre-puff is set to -0.51 sec, the exact timing of the puff is no longer critical because the pressure is relatively constant for at least 200 msec around t=0 (without plasma, see shot 951115024). There were some problems with TF cooling that slowed down the run significantly. Otherwise, the engineering systems worked quite well. There were a few computer problems, but they were quickly resolved by Josh. Scorecard: 18 plasmas, 12 fizzles, 2 duds, 2 test shots Shot 1 : Copied shot 951114031 lengthening the Ar puff by a couple of msec and reducing the programmed density to 6 x 10^19 m^-2. Good shot. Shot 2 : Reduced programmed density to 5 x 10^19 m^-2. Fizzle! Shot 3 : Repeat. Good shot. Shot 4 : Reduced pre-programmed gas puffing to try to get down to the requested density. Raised requested density to 6 x 10^19 m^-2. Good shot. Shot 5 : Repeat. Good shot. Natural Moly injection at 0.76 sec. Shot 6 : Repeat. Good shot. Disruption in rampdown. Shot 7 : Repeat. Fizzle! Shot 8: Repeat. Fizzle! Shot 9 : Repeat. Dud! Shot 10: Disabled B top early gas puff. Dud! Shot 11: Re-enabled B top puff and added 1 msec more to the puff. Fizzle! Shot 12: Added another msec to the B top early puff to make it 6 msec long. Good shot. Shot 13: Repeat. Fizzle! Shot 14: Returned B top early puff to 5 msec duration. Good shot. Shot 15: Repeat. Fizzle! Shot 16: Tweaked B top pre-puff to make it a bit longer. 6 ms flattop with 2 ms rise and fall times. Good shot. Shot 17: Added another ms to the B top pre-puff flattop. Good shot. Disrupted at 1.16 sec. Density data lost. Shot 18: Repeat. Fizzle! CII level up to 0.04 mW/cm^2/ster. Shot 19: Repeat. Fizzle! Shot 20: Repeat. Fizzle! Shot 21: Reduced Br offset from 7.5 mT to 7.0 mT. Reduced B top pre-puff by another ms to 6 ms flattop with 1 ms rise and fall times. Good shot. Shot 22: Repeat. Fizzle! Shot 23: Test shot with B top gas puff only, no fields. A side and B side gas valves disabled. B top gas puff moved to -0.41 sec. B top pressure set to 5 lbs. Shot 24: Test shot with B top gas puff only. B top puff moved to -0.51 sec. B top pressure changed to 10.8 lbs. Flattop increased to 7 ms. Shot 25: Real shot with new gas pre-puff arrangement.
