The run was to be split between pcx calibration and rf conditioning. The pcx
went down at shot 8 with hvps problems, so rf took over. tci was down all day
so we controlled density with the visible bremstrahlung signal and got density
from ts. This worked fine, though shot-to-shot reproducibility was still not
great (see physics operator summary). We continued the process begun in run
951117 of bringing the two rf systems up to reliable high power operation. We
had succeeded in getting high power (1.4MW) from d-port but had not yet tuned
e-port correctly (see run summary 951117). Tuning e-port as explained in that
summary (but not tried) proved correct and put us close enough to quickly match
e-port. Within 2 plasma shots we had 0.4 MW and 2 plasma shots later over 1MW.
Shots 19, 21, 22, 24, 25 had over 1MW from each system, but not simultaneously.
We overlapped the power for shot 31, getting over 2.5MW for a short time,
with h-mode leading to tripping of the rf. Meanwhile the d2 pellet
team was firing away at 1sec. On shot 33 we tried to get pep mode with a
pellet at 0.7sec and rf soon after. This was not successful and we didn't get
another plasma to try it again. We still need to demonstrate reliable
high power operation (>1.5MW for each system) and simultaneous operation.
This is left for the next run.

Run 951128 was in support of Mini-Proposals #62 - Beast Commisioning
and #102 - RF Conditioning. The goals of these mini-proposals
are to check out diagnostics and bring the RF on the air.

Program for this run:
- Set up a shot acceptable to the various experimenters and repeat
until everyone is satisfied. Time will also be spent working on
a fiducial shot.

Some things discovered today:
1) Suitable plasmas were obtained to satisfy almost everyone today.
2) Deuterium pellets were fired today, mostly into rampdown plasmas, but
a pellet was fired pre-RF on 033.
3) Puffed prefill was used again today with 13msec of puffed prefill.
There were large amounts of molybdenum being generated early in
some discharges. Increasing the gas voltage programming in segment 1
reduced the moly, but the current rise was beginning to be affected by
the extra gas load. Also, some shots had saturated Dalpha signals
before the plasma became well diverted. This was cured by holding RXL
approximately 5mm further out before the plasma became well diverted.
4) Once again the machine was in the plasma/fizzle alternating mode. Then
it progressed to two plasmas/fizzle mode. Most shots today had
disruptions in the ramp-down due to the D pellet injection. Most
shots pre-pellet did ramp all the way down, as did the shot with the
pellet fired pre-RF.
5) Shots 027-030 and Shots 034 were attempts to reproduce the breakdown
behavior seen on Shot 951117027 (breakdown at .003s, fast current rise,
etc.). These shots used voltage spikes programmed on the OH1 and OH2
supplies to mimic the conditions of 951117027. Current rises are very
fast (see shot 034) but the vertical field does not come in quickly
enough to 'catch' the forming plasma. The commutation time for the
OH2 and EF1 coils were changed to +.0005seconds. This change reduced
the 'lurch' seen in Bz during most breakdowns. Some more work needs
to be done to perfect this startup scenario, but the results from today
are promising.
6) None of the shots today are suitable for 'fiducial' status because
of the lack of TCI data, although shot 009 may be a suitable candidate
for further massaging.
7) 'NEW_PCS' was used today and no bugs were tickled.

Engineering, computing, and diagnostics today: Engineering tests were
performed on shots 001-004 to determine which board in the TF cabinets
was causing the comm faults that weren't really there, to check the
changes to the EF3 supply, and to measure the OH coax resistance.
The misbehaving board was identified and all other changes were fine.
After these shots, engineering was flawless. There were many shots with
multiple CAMAC errors. Most data were saved though by JAS. TCI was
not functional today. Post-run work is under way to remedy the
problems. As a consequence, the whole run was performed with z_meter
controlled density feedback. The CX experiments were rendered useless
today by power supply problems.
