Run Summary for 951213

Was this the curse of Son of MP049A or the son of Curse of MP049A?
Either way, the run got off to a late start due to Cryo PC problems, then
entered the disruption-fiz-fiz-fiz-hard x-ray cycle, presumably because of
the filthy surfaces of the upper divertor area being touched for the very
first time, at least this run period. Number of useful shots: ~ 0, although
Steve Wolfe's dog will probably charge me for the run.

Today's run plan: Import segment 3 of shot 950526023, which was an upper
x-point diverted plasma from the last time we did it. Puff
in argon from B-side-lower piezo valve. John needs the
density to be rather low, so that CX excitation of Ar16+ is
significant, so set nl_04=0.6e20 m-2. We need a series of 15
good constant plasmas so that an up/down scan of the Ar16+
lines (n=9 & 10) can be done.

Summary: Absolutely the worst run I have ever had. All upper x-point shots
disrupted upwards, each followed by many fizzles. Recovering reliable
current rises proved to be extremely difficult. I finally had to give
up and try to get back the fiducial shot. The only decent upper
x-point shots (018, 023, and 025) were both at nl_04=1.0e20 m-2,
which was too high to be useful for this MP.

Misc Phys Op stuff: There was a delay of several hours getting going, due to a
problem with cryo cooling.

Normal ECDC in deuterium
Deuterium in K-side at 20 psi (used to be A-side)
Deuterium in B-top at 5 psi (puff pre-fill)
Argon in B-side-lower at 4-5 psi
No RF, no pellets

PCS copied from shot 950526023, segments 3 & 4 (with appropriate
updates), and fiducial shot 951207025 for segments 1 & 2. Density
set to nl_04=0.6e20 m-2. Segments 1 and 3 will be used today, except
for the first shot, which will be a fiducial (segments 1 and 2).


Detailed shot log:

Shot 01 -- Fiducial shot. Good shot. Had ohmic H-mode.

Next shot: Upper x-point diverted plasma. Argon set for 50 ms
puff starting at t=0.3 s (@ 90 volts).

Shot 02 -- Plasma, disrupted at 0.37 s. Went upward, Ihalo=130 kA.

Next shot: turn off argon valve and try to recover. Fizzle expected

Shot 03 -- Plasma, disrupted at 0.60 s. Was upper x-pt diverted. Maybe we're
just cleaning things up on the top.

Next shot: re-enable argon puffing and repeat.

Shot 04 -- Plasma, disrupted at 0.61 s. Some hard x-rays. All of the
disruptions have been thermal quench ones, so far.

Next shot: increase pre-pulse puff duration by 1 ms and repeat

Shot 05 -- Plasma, disrupted at 0.38 s. EFC railed a couple of ms prior to
disruption, when elongation reached 1.65. Maybe the plasma is
too elongated. There were also even more hard x-rays.

Next shot: raise ZCUR by 5 mm in order to decrease plasma elongation
Argon remains on. Raise early gas puffing.

Shot 06 -- Plasma, disrupted at 0.41 s. Hard x-rays. Don't understand
the disruption problem.

Next shot: change density programming to that of the fiducial
(1.0e20 m-2), and lengthen pre-pulse puff duration by 1 ms

Shot 07 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: shorten pre-pulse puff by 1 ms, and decrease feedback
gain on ZXL. Note: on changing the ZXL gain, PCS re-compiled the
call_alg routine.

Shot 08 -- Fizzle. The null has a large Br.

Next shot: reduce Br by 1 mT.

Shot 09 -- Plasma, disrupted at 0.56 s. Several minor disruptions from
0.2 to 0.3 s. Hard x-rays are gone. Density nearly
reaches 1e20 m-2.

Next shot: no changes

Shot 10 -- Fizzle. Null is okay.

Next shot: repeat

Shot 11 -- Plasma, disrupted at 0.57 s. Minor disruption at 0.28 s.

Next shot: copy Ip from segment 1 into segment 3, modify ZCUR in
segment 3 to better match segment 1 at 0.1 s, and reduce CLEARIN
in segment 3 to reduce elongation.

Shot 12 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: repeat

Shot 13 -- Plasma, disrupted at 0.59 s. Plasma elongation is only 1.55, and
EFC is not having much of a problem before the disruption.

Next shot: shorten the argon puff by 10 ms and repeat.

Shot 14 -- Fizzle. Null okay

Next shot: Delay gain increase in ZXU by 0.1 s and repeat

Shot 15 -- Fizzle.
