| Run Summary for MP 122A - Rho-Star Scaling - Jeff Schachter ========================================== Overall, a good day - we were 30 for 30 on shots required. We ran the following fields: Field Shots ------ ------ 2.6 003-017, 022 3.5 018-021,023,024 5.3 025-032 Please see the logbook under the topic SESSION_LEADER for shot to shot details. (Note that the NUSTAR result quoted is not in the correct units.) We ran 1.5 s flattops for shots 007-024. Breakdown was at 4.8 T, and the TF was ramped down to the appropriate field value. The portion of the lower field flat top that is usable in the rho-star analysis usually began around 0.78 s and lasted until 1.5 s. Rf was used in the 5.3 T shots starting at shot 027. The digitization rate on the Visible Brem. Array was changed from its usual setting for shots 008-020. Either this screwed up the data itself, or Earl's analysis program choked, but the data needs to be looked at. We changed the rate back for shot 021. Shot 022 was a rerun of shot 012 to get a Zeff measurement. YAG data is bogus for shots 027-032. This could be a problem, since I was using the YAG Te0 to gauge the goodness of the shot for rho-star scaling. Fortunately, this was at 5.3 T, so we have ECE data. I need to go back and verify that the shots marked as good will indeed be useful. 4 different parameter ranges were obtained at 2.6 T - only one of which will be possible to obtain at 8.0 T (group 1). Here are the shot groupings for today's run (only shots that have good parameters are listed): GROUP 1 Ip (kA) Nel20 Te (keV) RF Power (kW) ======= ======= ===== ======= ======== 2.6 T: 011, 012, 014, 022 300 0.45 0.95 0 3.5 T: 020, 021 410 0.65 1.05 0 5.3 T: 030, 031 615 1.15 1.5 800 (must check) GROUP 2 ======= 2.6 T: 009, 010 350 0.53 0.93 0 3.5 T: 018, 019 470 0.79 1.15 0 GROUP 3 ======= 2.6 T: 016 400 0.40 0.85 0 3.5 T: 023, 024 525 0.7 1.0 GROUP 4 ======= 2.6 T: 017 400 0.6 1.2 0 We may need to rerun the group 1 5.3 T shots, depending on how well the ECE Te's do in the first group. We also need 5.3 T shots for groups 2-4, and 8.0 T shots for group 1. Therefore another run would be nice. |

| Physics operator summary for 951218 EO: Bertolino/Daigle PO: Goetz SL: Schachter Run 951218 was in support of Mini-Proposal #122A - Rho-star Scaling. The goal of this run is to obtain a set of plasmas at 2.6T, 3.5T, 5.3T and 8.0T that are suitable for rho-star scaling analysis. Program for this run: - Set up a diverted shot with: Ip Bt ne20 heating .35 2.6 .43 OH .48 3.5 .65 OH .73 5.3 1.1 ICRF 1.1 8.0 2.0 ICRF - Make plasmas with dimensionless parameters (except rho-star) as similar as possible. See the session leader's summary for a report on this program. Some things discovered today: 1) Very reliable startup today. Very good current rises and low impurity levels. There was a string of 30 straight shots. This string was interrupted by a 'strong' fizzle, which was the fiducial shot. The Br offset change was not in the shot loaded. 2) Breakdowns were obtained at values of the toroidal field from 4.8 to 5.4T. The only knob touched for these was the TF current. Fill pressure was approximately 2.0e-5 in nitrogen units. Impurity levels during current rise were low. 3) Hybrid control of the TF current worked well, no problems were encountered. The scale factor is 28kA of TF current gives 1T. 4) The controllers are not really orthogonal. Much care was needed to keep the gaps the same shot-to-shot as the current was changed. Also, there seems to be a 0.1e20 offset on NL04 - drawing 0.5e20 results in 0.6e20. 5) Pulse lengths were extended to 1.5sec for the 2.6T and the 3.5T discharges. A pulse length of 1.2sec was used for the 5.3T discharges. Disruptions were occurring @ ~1.65sec, not much time was spent investigating the cause as the disruptions were relatively benign. Engineering, computing, and diagnostics today: Engineering tests were performed on shots 001 and 002 to check the OH coax resistances. Troubles with the YAG after shot 026. Some CAMAC errors today, but not many.
