| Session Leader's Summary for 951221 MP 126 Fast Current Ramp MP 125A ICRF Reverse Shear Mode SL wolfe PO Hutch EO Silva/Bertolino/Daigle The goal of this run was to produce reverse shear plasmas heated with ICRF and look for enhanced confinement. The plan was as follows: Start from a fiducial shot setup Tune up the starting equilibrium to a) Elongate and divert as early as possible CLEARIN on wire 4 in Seg 1 Crowbar EF1's earlier b) Move out to match antenna as early as possible Low-level RF to check loading Turn on High power RF during early ramp up Vary early density programming Monitor Moly brightness, RF loading, runaways For all of the above steps, monitor Moly levels, heating, Te(r) profiles, sawtooth onset, any signs of improved confinement. This was a very frustrating run. The main goal was not achieved, although some interesting discharges were produced that will bear further analysis. These are called out below. We were plagued by vertical instabilities which caused early disruptions for the first three-quarters of the run. These were found to be at least partially due to secondary effects of wall conditioning, and not directly to the equilibria being requested. In particular, the fiducial shot setup exhibited the same vertical disruption when it was reloaded at shot 24. There was only one successful plasma in this portion of the run, namely shot 3, and it also had incipient vertical problems. These shots were also characterized by hard xrays. Interestingly, many of them had hollow temperature profiles before the disruptions, and #3 was hollow to around 160msec. We finally loaded a low elongation limiter equilibrium 951207015 at shot 29. This ran almost full length, until disrupting after the EF1U supply faulted. This shot also had some hards, and just made it past the vertical problems around 180msec. It also had hollow te profiles until around 450msec! While this was probably due to high central radiation, this was an interesting shot. It also had substantial non-thermals and may have been in slide-away regime. Shot 30 was a repeat shot, but in this case the te profiles were more normal and the xrays reduced, although not gone. Shot 31 was the same equilibrium at higher density, .6e20; it had hollow te profile until .35sec and started sawtoothing after .45 sec. Shot 32 was a repeat of 31, but with the RF on from .11 sec; the rf ran for the whole length of the shot (about .9sec at 1MW). The te peaked up with the rf, but sawteeth were delayed to around .4 sec. Shot 33 raised the density to 8e19. The rf again stayed on nicely. Sawteeth started at .23 sec, and there was some high frequency hash on the halpha that started at the same time as the sawteeth, but didn't look like sawteeth. This shot was almost completely free of non-thermals. It also had humongous early moly. For shot 34, we went back to the original program by reloading shot 3, but leaving the rf on early. The sawteeth started around .2 secm when the te0 was up to nearly 4keV. Again the moly and core radiation were very high. The RF tripped around 0.4sec, and was an h-mode with repetitively faulting rf starting around .65. Since shot 3 had previously been reloaded at shot 18 and had disrupted at .18sec, the fact that this shot ran at all is an indication that the wall conditions were playing a crucial role. Shot 35 was a fiducial shot, obtained by reloading 24. This one ran. Shot 36 was back to the program, reloaded 34 and filled in the early density dip. While there were no sawteeth till 220msec, the te profile was always peaked, as it had been on the fiducial. Shot 37 had the EF1's crowbarring at 80msec, which had previously produced higher early elongation but also disruptions. This time it ran nicely. Again sawteeth started at .22 sec, but the te was hollow before the rf, and reached 3.8keV before the first tooth. Shot 38 was an attempt to flattop the current at .5MA after the fast rise, but it fell victim to the vertical instability and disrupted at 280msec. It did however get to 3.5keV and had hollow te(r) before the rf. There were problems with the e-port rf today: first the tuner stopped giving a position readout, and then the transmitter died. Therefore, almost the entire run used only D-port antenna, limiting the power to about 1.3MW. However, it proved possible to couple the rf in quite early, despite low loading. See the PHYSOP report and the logbook under SESSION_LEADER for a more detailed descriptions of the machinations in the first part of the run. |

| Physop 951221 MP126 +125A SL Wolfe PO Hutch Wolfe's instructions: ____________________ Start from a fiducial shot setup Tune up the starting equilibrium to a) Elongate and divert as early as possible CLEARIN on wire 4 in Seg 1 Crowbar EF1's earlier b) Move out to match antenna as early as possible Low-level RF to check loading Turn on High power RF during early ramp up Vary early density programming Monitor Moly brightness, RF loading, runaways For all of the above steps, monitor Moly levels, heating, Te(r) profiles, sawtooth onset, any signs of improved confinement. If there are any signs of improved confinement, or of reverse shear, and if there is time, try firing Li pellets for (probably destructive) Bz measurements. Tried most of this but with a lot of vertical instability problems. Summary _______ Most of the first 2/3 of the run was spent with vertical instabilities early (.1-.18s). In the end, even the fiducial suffered the same problem. Therefore we loaded a low elongation shot and then managed to get it to run. After a few shots like this which gradually seemed to condition the walls and reduce the tendency to form hollow current profiles, we got the RF going throughout the shot. Then we went back to shot 3. This ran, as also did the fiducial (35). We then got a shot with the EF1s crowbarred early that made it, but the final shot which attempted to limit the current to .5MA did not. Conditioning or some other behaviour is now different. We are getting hollow temperature profiles, a tendency for runaways and slower Ip rises. The effect is to cause the shape to be more unstable in the first 200ms. It seems that this is combatted to some extent by early gas but a consistent solution is not to hand. Achieved: Early RF coupling. Hollow Te profiles. But no obvious signs of any good confinement. Tweaked B_r offset to .0065 (was .0055). Loaded wire from seg 2 wire 4 CLEARIN to seg1 wire 4. Gain 3 from 40ms to 0.08ms then 6. RCUR: Called fluxihh in the first predictor. Its version is slightly later there seem to be some differences. Only at -10 to -3 s. 1 Fiz Br seems low. Br to 7.5 offset. 2 Pla Vertical thrash leads to disruption at 160ms. Slow instability caused by extra elongation while the position is still rather far in. RCUR seg 1 new version. offset 10000 till 40ms, then 5000. Notched the derivative gain off 38ms to 42ms. Seg2 offset to 5000. Programmed clearin to ramp from (0s,-.02) to (150ms,0.). 2 Pla Ran the duration. Density rises fast and shuts off. A few hards. Signs of vertical instability 130ms, 180ms and 300ms. Diverts at 160ms (.6MA) ELM free H-mode at .9-10.s, with RF. Fill puff to -515 to -493 (increase by 3ms). Lowered gas 3 puff V to 15 from 30 during 1st 100ms. EF3 V given a 100V rampdown and back minimum at 35ms. 3 Fiz Got 2.4e-5 fill. (c.f. 1.9) fizzled at 30kA, 14ms. Drop gas back to -494. Lower EF3 V to 2000 at 20ms. 4 Pla Four oscillations of vertical instability during 80 to 160ms. There seems to be crosstalk between the R and Z oscillations. Lowered RCUR P till 40ms, to try and get rid of RCUR instabilities. 5 Pla Vertical instability terminates at .15s. Hard xray warning .04R. Stability in segment 1 looks better. Plasma seems to get hit at the segment switch. Put gas puff to 100V from 0 to .01s. Clearin to -.02 at .1s in segment 2. RCUR in segment 2 to .653 at 0.1s to match seg 1. This should fix these discontiuities 6 Pla Vertical instability during .1 to .15s then lost. Drew RCUR to .66m (from .653) at .1s, ramping out in segment 1 from 0.6s. Reduced Gas 3 early peak. Introduced a gas 4 pulse -20ms to 0ms. Lost all my notes from shot 6 on. Basically tried a lot of things including early EF1 crowbars, which work, Lowering fast zcur P, which looked worse. Removed clearin gain, hardly any change. Nothing succeeded in preventing the vertical instability. Check Wolfe's notes for details. 22, 23 fiducials thrown away by no EF1 commutation. 24 Pla Fiducal suffers from the vertical instability. Reload. 25 Pla Same Set clearin to -.02 till 200ms. 26 Pla Rather the same. Fix early gas puff to give one chop. 27 Pla Same thing. Vertical Instability. Wolfe did a cold start things look all right. However, the plasma looks really bad, as if the control is messed up. Add gas puff set to 25 during 10-80ms. 28 Pla Loaded 951207015. A low elongation shot from the kappa scan. Br is at 7mT. 29 Pla Long shot. Xray warning. ECE looks really ugly, reported as hollow current profiles for about .5s. Repeat. 30 Pla Long again. ECE seems more sensible, except in the rise. Raise nl04 to 6.e19. 31 Pla Hollow T_e till about 300ms. Apparently radiative effect. Got the higher density. 2pi drops to 160kW once the hollowness disappears, from about 500kW earlier. Asked for early RF. 32 Pla Got 1MW through most of shot. Te0 hotter early. Density jumps up to demand only when the sawteeth appear. Added a gas 4 pulse at -30 to 0ms. Set nl04 to 8e19. 33 Pla Getting the RF on before the sawteeth start at .2s. Load shot 3. Br to 7mT offset. 34 Pla Ran the duration. Reload shot 24 for the fiducial. 35 Pla Ran the duration at last. Reload 34. Add an early density point to keep the gas on. 36 Pla Fine. Seemed to get rid of the current S. Got 1.1MW from .11s Tweaked up nl04 some more. EF1 crowbar to .08s. 37 Pla Drew Ip to 500kA. 38 |
