MP118 ICRF Heated H-Mode at 2.6T
Using Second Harmonic H Minority Heating
Mainly Density and Minority Concentration Scans

We have achieved one of the objectives of this run, to
demonstrate that second harmonic H minority heating works.
Unfortunately, D-port transmitter broke on shot 006 and we had
to do the density and concentration scans at 1MW power level.
Consequently, we were not able to operate way above threshold.
The current was fixed at 0.55MA for these scans.

Heating was definitely observed, but it is not clear how efficient
the heating was. H-mode was observed except at the highest density
(target nel_04 > 1). The stored energy typically doubled in H-mode
plasmas, but no spectacular H-factors were observed.
H-factors of these H-modes were about 1. However, both ohmic and
L-mode plasmas had H-factors significantly below 1, as low as 0.6.

H concentration was varied by changing the gas mix in the plenum.
The H fraction in the mix was varied in the following order:
20%, 40%, 10%, 0%, and 100%. Density scan was performed in the
range (target value before RF) 0.5 to 1.2 on nel_04. It was
operationally difficult to go down further in density.
Similar results were obtained at all concentration. At low density,
ohmic and RF H-modes were observed. At intermediate density, only
RF H-modes were observed. At high density no H-modes were observed.
The largest stored energy increases were observed at intermediate
density. Preliminary indication from H_alpha/D_alpha measurements
is that the H concentration was not varying as much as we had hoped.
Isotope dependence of energy confinement was not clearly observed.
Evidence of sawtooth stabilization was not observed.

Towards the end of the run, Li pellets were injected (shots 036 and 037).
H-mode was observed after RF came on, but the plasma disrupted shortly
thereafter.

The last shot was a fiducial. In contrast to shot 001, no H-mode was
observed, and heating was below L-mode. There was probably still a large
concentration of H. Jim Irby reports that C level has been increasing
steadily throughout the day.

Run 960118 was in support of Mini-Proposal #118 - ICRF Heated H-Mode at 2.6T.
The primary objective of this mini-proposal is to explore the
possibility of achieving improved H-factors by operating at lower
values of nebar*Bt. A secondary objective is to study sawtooth
stabilization using this heating scheme.

Plan:
establish a 2.6T shot that can be heated
H minority scan at fixed density
scan density at best H concentration
study sawtooth stabilization

The plan was carried out. Plasmas with Ip=0.55MA and Bt=2.6T were obtained
and heated with ICRF. The density was scanned with varying H fractions.
Sawtooth stabilization was not attempted. See the Session Leader's summary
for a more detailed description of the physics.

Some things discovered today:
1) Startup was very good today once the correct prefill puff duration was
determined. There were three fizzles in the first nine shots but no
more fizzles for the rest of the day. The radial field offset was
changed and then changed back, but not touched after shot 005. A rule
of thumb today was 12msec of prepuff following a low density shot and
10msec of prepuff following a high density shot (here, high density
means nl04 >= 1.0e20). Plasmas began to bounce outside late in the
run (tracked by the z_meter_array) and increasing the prepuff stopped
this phenomenon. All breakdowns, non-fiducials, were at 4.8T.
2) The number of useful plasmas was limited by early disruptions. Some of
these disruptions were caused by the RF feedback causing the plasma to
move in and out rapidly. Others were caused by too much gas early
causing impurities and such to enter the plasma. Two shots, each at
low density had indications of large moly injections. It does seem
difficult to make robust plasmas with Ip=0.55MA and Bt=2.6T.
3) The hybrid was used to control the TF current without any worries.
The pulse length was extended to 1.2 sec to obtain a long enough
flat-top for the experiment. When extending the flat-top, do not
forget to extend the gains on the individual wires.
4) All in all, not a bad day to be in the chair.

Engineering, computing, and diagnostics today: Cooling cost 1/2 hour at the
beginning (EF1L and EF2U were not cold). Two duds today, one due to
a magnet resistance fault and one due to the hybrid gas waveforms not
making it to the gas PLC. The alternator lost voltage on one shot.
One unexplained TF crowbar. ZENITH hung before one shot causing a
delay.
