Engineering Operator: V. Bertolino Physics Operator: J. Goetz Session leader: B. Lipschultz The aim of today's run is to achieve dissipative divertor operation with H-mode RF-heated plasmas. During the run - 960209 we tried using both D2 and Ne puffing to increase the divertor radiation. The D2 puffing did increase the divertor pressure but nad little effect on the other divertor parameters. With Ne we were somewhat more successful in that the separatrix region dropped in Te and was on the verge of detachment. Unfortunately the change in divertor conditions was brought about by changes in the PSOL from Ne radiation from inside the separatrix. Today we would like to try some new attacks: (1) puff Ne directly in the divertor with gas puff outside to increase flows into the divertor. (2) awitch to Ar and try the same. (3) switch to N2 and try the same. With all of these we will be trying to optimize the divertor radiation.

Mini-Proposal #113 - Impurity Puffing to Induce the Detached Divertor Condition in High Power RF Heated Discharges. The goals of this Mini-Proposal are (1) to determine the amount and type of puffed impurities required for divertor detachment at high RF powers and (2) to survey the conditions under which H-modes and divertor detachment exist to see if they can be made compatible. Plan: fiducial setup plasma with high SOL power - preferably ELMy H-mode puff deuterium through the floor tiles to try and detach the divertor if successful then characterize the SOL and divertor with the FSP, McPherson, and Chromex if not successful then puff neon, argon, and nitrogen through B_SIDE until the divertor detaches, then characterize the FSP, McPherson, and Chromex. puff neon, argon, and nitrogen through the floor tiles to try and detach the divertor. Characterize the SOL and divertor plasmas with the FSP, McPherson, and Chromex. if a completely detached H-mode (CDH) is achieved, attempt to optimize
