Things to try today:
1. Higher field 6.4T
2. Use steady pre-fill
3. RF assist

This was the most successful run of this campaign so far.
There were 7 full-length plasma shots: 03, 07, 10, 14, 21, 25, and 27.
All of them had breakdown at 6.0T with TF ramping up. Attempts to
break down at 5.3T were unsuccessful, so later in the run we made 5.3T
plasmas by ramping the TF down after breaking down at 6.0T.
They were all at 0.8MA and nel=1.0e20 (later shots had a little lower
density, nel=0.9e20). The power radiated into the plasma from the
two antennas were in the range 0.1-0.2MW by the end of the run.
The run ended early because of an alternator problem. Transmitter #2
has a problem, which needs to be fixed on Monday.

Physics operator's summary for run 960815

MP 159A -- Re-start machine.

SL: Y. Takase
PO: R. Granetz
EO: F. Silva

Today's run will again try to get good plasmas after the 5-month shutdown.
The initial attempts at this during the past 2 weeks have not yet yielded
any more than 0.33 s long discharges, and lots of duds and fizzles. The
primary difference today will be operation at higher toroidal field.

Summary: The higher toroidal field did the trick. With TF >= 6.0 tesla at
breakdown, we had 9 plasmas, 7 of which ramped down successfully.
The best was probably 027, which had a flattop to 1.2 s and 200 kW
of RF. We could not get current rise with breakdown at 5.3 T, so
I got around this problem by using hybrid control of the TF to
breakdown at 6.0 T and then ramped back down to 5.4 tesla for the
flattop. Obviously this problem needs to be worked on some more.
Unlike previous runs, we had no duds today. By the end of the run
we were in the familiar alternating pattern between plasmas and
fizzles. We made a good start, but there's still a lot to be done
to get reliable operation of the machine and the RF. We also still
have to run with higher pre-charge and parallel EF4's. See Yuichi's
session leader's report for info on the RF.

Plasma shots: 003, 007, 010, 013 (disrupted), 014, 021,
024 (disrupted), 025, 027

Scorecard: 9 plasmas (7 full length, 2 disruptions)
19 fizzles (7 with Ip > 50 kA)
0 duds
----------
28 total

Run plan:

Establish consistent operation (at any field and any Ip!)
Start from yesterday's shot 960814011 (EF4's in series and without high
pre-charge), except raise TF field to 6.4 tesla. Another possible
thing to try is using a constant pre-fill rather than a pulsed pre-fill.

Engineering setup for Thursday 15 Aug 1996:

Discharge clean in deuterium overnight.
Engineering setup from shot 960814011 (EF4's in series), EXCEPT set the
PLC limits on the TF for 6.4 tesla (183 kA on PLC) and start the TF
at -1.1 s.

gas setup - hybrid enable B-top and A-side
fill A-side with 20 PSI of D2
fill B-top with 5 PSI of D2
fill B-side-lower with 4 PSI of Ar

Detailed shot log:

Shot 01 -- Fizzle. A little too much vertical field. Next shot: 15 amps more
negative on EF4 in segment 1.

Shot 02 -- Fizzle. Bv was better. Null is fair, but should be good enough.
Next shot: reduce pre-pulse gas puff duration from 15 to 13 ms.

Shot 03 -- Plasma! Full length rampdown, no disruption. Ip=0.8 MA. OH2's
and EFC are working very hard during the first 0.2 s to stabilize
plasma position. Prf=0.1 MA, but faulted out at t=0.4 s.
NL_04=1.0e20 m-2. Next shot: no changes.

Shot 04 -- Fizzle. 55 kA. I think it almost went. No changes for the next
shot. Note: on both this and the previous shots, there was 2 kW of
RF starting at t=-0.010 s.

Shot 05 -- Fizzle, sort of. 100 kA. The GPC shows that the early plasma
is moving inwards to the wall. Next shot: reduce pre-pulse gas
puff duration from 13 to 12 ms. Note: the OH2U coax resistance
is now 2.5 microohms.

Shot 06 -- Fizzle, another 100 kA one. GPC still shows the plasma moving
inwards. Steve Wolfe also thinks it's moving vertically as well.
Next shot: reduce pre-pulse gas puff duration from 12 to 11 ms, in
the hopes of getting a faster current rise, to better match the
Bz ramp. Note: OH2U coax resistance was slightly less this shot.

Shot 07 -- Plasma. Full length, duration=1.5 s, Ip=0.8 MA, no disruption.
There's a nasty vertical instability early on, just like on
shot 003. OH2U coax resistance came down again. RF crapped out.
I'll try one more shot with no changes.

Shot 08 -- Fizzle. 60 kA. Just like after the plasma on shot 003. No changes
until we get another plasma.

Shot 09 -- Fizzle. 80 kA. No changes.

Shot 10 -- Plasma. 0.8 MA, 1.5 s, 1.0e20 m-2. RF is still having severe
problems. Next shot: tweak up the OH1 voltage around t=0.02 s in
order to keep the current rising quickly.

Shot 11 -- Fizzle (surprise!) 65 kA. The plasma is still hitting the
inboard wall, even with the extra OH1 voltage. For the next shot,
try reducing the ramp rate of Bz by lowering the EF3 voltage
around t=15 ms.

Shot 12 -- Fizzle. 105 kA. Plasma still hits inboard wall. The voltage
changes to OH1 and EF3 do not seem to be doing anything. According
to Ian and Steve, this may be because the RCUR programming is
too dominant. For the next shot, reduce the RCUR offset from
10000 to 7000.

Shot 13 -- Plasma, hard disruption at 0.26 s due to vertical instability.
The vertical and radial control was much better early on, so those
changes in segment 1 were beneficial. The instability after 0.2 s
may have been due to kappa > 1.6. CLEARIN was programmed to have
a big jump around then, so I've delayed it and ramped it for the
next shot.

Shot 14 -- Plasma. Good shot. Good stability. Low Prad. Sawtoothing (as
have all the previous plasmas today). Prf=0.1 MW.
Well, that's two shots in a row, at 6.3 tesla. For the next shot,
try lowering the field to 5.3 tesla (PLC setting of 154 kA and
at t=-1.0 s). Also enable the argon.

Change to 5.3 tesla.

Shot 15 -- Fizzle, very weak. No changes for next shot.

Shot 16 -- Fizzle, another weak one. On the suggestion of Ian and Steve, I
will boost the EF1 currents prior to t=0 by 50 amps (-4800 to -4850)
in order to partially offset the drop of 19 kA in the TF single
turn at this lower field.

Shot 17 -- Fizzle, just like the previous one. For the next shot, add some
voltage to OH1 from t=5 to 30 ms.

Shot 18 -- Fizzle, no improvement. Next shot: reduce gas and raise early OH1
voltage some more.

Shot 19 -- Fizzle, even worse. For the next shot: raise Btor to 6.0 tesla
(PLC setting of 174 kA, t=-1.1 s). Also recall shot 014 and
re-load.

Raise field to 6.0 tesla

Shot 20 -- Fizzle. Should have been nearly identical to shot 014. Next shot,
raise TF PLC limit back to 183, which should make shot 021 exactly
the same as 014.

Shot 21 -- Plasma. Good shot. The difference in I_tf at t=0 between this
shot and the previous one was only 1-2 kA, but for this shot the
TF was not in regulation and for the last shot it was. For the
next shot, go back to 5.3 tesla, but start the TF at -0.85 s
so that it is not in regulation at t=0.

Back down to 5.3 tesla.

Shot 22 -- Fizzle, weak. Screw it. Let's go under hybrid TF control and
get 5.3 tesla by breaking down at 6.3 and then ramping down.
Set PLC at 183 kA, starting at -1.1 s.

Turn on hybrid control of TF, start plasma at 6.3 T and then rampdown to 5.3 T.

Shot 23 -- Fizzle, weak. Try again, no changes, except move TF change from
t=0.10 to t=0.15 s.

Shot 24 -- Plasma, but disrupted at t=0.26 s, probably due to a fault in OH2L.
Next shot: repeat with no changes, except extend the argon puff
by 5 ms, AND TURN OFF THE RF AT T=0.

Shot 25 -- Plasma, good shot, even without the RF on at t=0. For the next
shot, increase the flattop from 1.0 to 1.2 s (which entails
modifying every wire!). Also increase the argon puff by another
5 ms.

Shot 26 -- Fizzle, weak. Try again, no changes.

Shot 27 -- Plasma, good shot, flattop to 1.2 s. Ip=0.8 MA. Btor=5.45 T during
flattop, but 6 tesla and rising at breakdown. For the next shot,
reduce the outer gap from 2 cm to 1 cm by increasing RCUR by 5 mm.
Note: JR is still not seeing any argon in the plasma. After this
shot he went into the cell to make sure the valve wires are okay and
the argon bottle valve is open. It checked out okay. So for the
next shot, increase pulse width by another 20 ms (total of 50 ms),
but reduce the plenum pressure from 4 to 2 psi.

Shot 28 -- Fizzle, weak. Try again, no changes.

End of run. We had to terminate the run early today because of a problem with
an oil leak in the alternator.

Aug 15 1996 03:18:37:500PM960815027Robert GranetzShot 27 -- Plasma, good shot, flattop to 1.2 s.

Aug 15 1996 03:22:12:180PM960815028Robert GranetzShot 28 -- Fizzle, weak. Try again, no changes.

Aug 15 1996 03:45:07:350PM960815028Robert GranetzEnd of run. We had to terminate the run early today because of a problem with
an oil leak in the alternator.
