Run Plan:

Run target plasmas for RF (both transmitters).
Goal is 3MW total and reasonable H-modes (H > 1.5).
At some point, try to run a real fiducial.
If time permits and the plasmas are reasonably clean and
non-disruptive, start trying for 1.5MA. Alternatively,
we may go back to Ian's run and finish developing the
low triangularity shape for currents to q=3+.

Run summary:

Overnight He ECDC was performed last night, and the density was kept low,
mostly below nel=1.0e20. This was probably the most productive run of the
campaign so far. We had a good streak of plasmas (shots 05-19) with lots of
H-mode transitions with RF powers a little over 1MW. A limited density
scan was done (nel=0.7-1.1e20, target before H-mode), but no obvious
improvement was observed at low density. The H concentration was around
10% according to both CX and H_alpha/D_alpha. In the past, deterioration
of heating at high concentration (10% is considered high) was observed to
be worse at high density (nel=1.1e20), not as bad at low density (nel=0.7e20).

Technically, we had difficulty running the two antennas together.
This problem has been seen before, but not in H minority heating.
This problem needs to be solved to run high-power experiments.
The output power from transmitter 1 (D-port antenna) was limited today
because of higher-than-normal pressure in the final tube. Plasma position
feedback was turned on for the last few shots, and appears to be working
correctly.

Run Plan for 960828
======================
Run target plasmas for RF (both transmitters) until Yuichi is satisfied or I
get bored. Goal is 3MW total and good H-modes. At some point, try to run a
real fiducial, for example with segment 2 copied from 960105009; note that
gaps should be ok now, since the hybrid offsets seem to be back to "normal".
If time permits and the plasmas are reasonably clean and non-disruptive, start
trying for 1.5MA. Alternatively, we may go back to Ian's run and finish
developing the low triangularity shape for currents to q=3+.

The run started badly, but ended up being fairly successful from an operational
point of view. Unfortunately, the RF did not get close to the 3MW goal, because
they were unsuccessful keeping the two antennas on at once. Background
activities included tests of the divertor rga using NINJA puffs after the
plasma, and edge thomson was able to see plasma light and stray light, but
their alignment changed since the morning, so they were hitting a baffle.
Brian conditioned the FSP and got some data. Jim Reardon also tested his new
scanning probe into plasma. Also JR reported good rotation results. Fairly
good h-modes were obtained on most rf shots with power over 1.3MW or so. The
RF feedback was turned on, and seemed to be moving the plasma as expected, but
did not help in keeping the RF from faulting. More work is clearly required on
the RF side.

After a PLC EF4 test, the first plasma attempt was shot 2, which had a number
of problems. The EF4 was left in PLC control, so it didn't go. Also, there
were numerous CAMAC errors, including magnetics and hybrid outputs, and the TF
went to low-taps as soon as it came on, resulting in low field at t=0. Shots
1-4 were attempts to fix the TF; all of them had some level of CAMAC pronlems
as well. There was also a paranormal event between the 3rd and 4th shots which
caused the current_shot('cmod') to get reset to 960828000, so the 4th shot
ended up numbered shot 960828001!. JAS renamed the trees and set the current
shot to 4, so subsequent shots were properly numbered.

Shot 5, taken just after noon, was a full shot with the TF under PLC control,
the first shot of the day with all supplies working properly; it gave us a
full length plasma, complete with an h-mode at 1sec. The TF problem with
hybrid control was finally understood as operator error: the PLC had been
setup with 0V instead of full (1600) voltage. Apparently, the high tap circuit
obeys the PLC voltage as a limit, while the low-taps are strictly current
demand, so that explained why the supply went to low-tap immediately. PHYSOPS
SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS EFFECT: Under hybrid control, the TF should be set
for 1600V and whatever current limit is appropriate. Unfortunately, the CAMAC
problems were still present on shot 5, with most of the BP_JK loops affected,
among others; as a result the EFIT reconstruction is not trustworthy on this
shot.

For shot 6, Joe Bosco removed the 4xray crates from the highway, and the CAMAC
problems vanished for the rest of the day. After the run, Joe found a 24V
supply on one crate with .5V of high frequency noise on it, but couldn't
reproduce the failures. The xray crates were left out for the start of
tomorrow.

Shots 5-19 were all successful startups with the same settings as 960827020,
except the pre-puff was increased by 2msec. The startups were all terrible,
with lots of spikes and thrashes and very slow Ip and Bz rises. Some of them
were below 40kA at 30msec. I didn't even try to tune them up as long as we
were getting good plasmas everytime, and it worked for 15 straight shots,
until we finally got a dud on shot 20.

After shot 20, I started tweaking: EF4 current (more positive by 15a, later
put back), RCUR offset, and pre-puff (up and down). I succeeded in getting
much nicer startups, with few or no thrashes and Ip to 130kA at 30msec, but
these were not nearly as robust as the initial sequence. The main change in
these is to raise the RCUR offset in segment 1 by 2000 amp-meters. This has
the effect of causing the Bz to ramp up more quickly during the early current
rise. At the old level, the Bz ramp was retarded because the feedback seees
the plasma as being centered or inside. I believe the startup on shots 5-19
had the plasma starting away from the inner wall and driving out to the
limiter, but not quenching, while the later cases started near or on the inner
wall and moved in so they snuffed themselves. I also note that the Br seemed
to like to be slightly positive, in contrast to previous runs; I never tweaked
the Br, although it seemed to drift negative during the day and duds seemed to
be more negative than plasmas. Also, see the logbook for a summary of the new
resultant coil currents at t=0-, which differ from the ones obtained before
yesterday by 100's of amps due to the new offset situation; the currents are
now closer to what is drawn.

During the course of the day, we changed the outer gap several times and
varied the density from .6e20 to 1.2e20 (nl4). There were a few full current
disruptions, due to Mo injections, but no halo warnings. See the logbook for
blow-by-blow. We never got around to doing the fiducial, which I copied into
segment 4.

They've figured out what the TF problem was: Frank had the voltage limit

Daigle and Cochrane). However, Daigle is afraid they have gronked
something poking around in the supply, so stay with PLC TF for now.

Aug 28 1996 02:11:52:850PM960828015Steve Wolfe960828015: repeat
early disruption. .47 sec.
Moly injection.

Aug 28 1996 02:20:37:040PM960828016Steve Wolfe960828016: move rcur out by 2mm (.667 -> .669) to reduce gap for RF
loaded it twice - pay attention wolfe!

plasma - h-modes. RF staying on better together.
Goetz requests more Ar for next shot.

Aug 28 1996 02:31:32:240PM960828017Steve Wolfe960828017: Ar back to 44msec. No other changes.
plasma - h-modes.

Aug 28 1996 02:44:46:770PM960828018Steve Wolfe960828018: Another mm on rcur ->.670
plasma - h-modes
lots of Mo injections.
outer gap is a little smaller, down to .9 to 1.0cm
RF still not real happy.

Aug 28 1996 02:58:16:990PM960828019Steve Wolfe960828019: Yuichi is turning on the RF load input. No gain on it for
this shot. No changes from my end. BLIP is having the NINJA plenum
pumped out, preparatory to puffing some neon.

plasma- lots of h-modes
I see a signal of about -.02V on RF_load signal. Yuichi says this is
the floor value for pushing the plasma away.

efit and RF power calc both bombed out?
running efit manually.

Aug 28 1996 03:10:14:280PM960828020Steve Wolfe960828020: nl4 back to .9e20
dud . Oh well, it was nice while ot lasted.

Aug 28 1996 03:18:51:740PM960828021Steve Wolfe960828021: nl4 back to .9e20
EF4 15amps more positive (to -1360)
another dud. It's gone!

Aug 28 1996 03:30:19:810PM960828022Steve Wolfe960828022: nl4 back to .9e20
Raise puff to 18msec.
Rcur offset from 7000 -> 8000
fizzle - 40kA moving outside.

Aug 28 1996 03:43:36:790PM960828023Steve Wolfe960828023: nl4 back to .9e20
rcur offset to 9000.
bd is still late, but current rise looks good. 125kA at 30msec
Plasma - h-modes,
rfload_e signal is around +.2V.

Aug 28 1996 03:55:40:510PM960828024Steve Wolfe960828024: RCUR seg 2 add RFload gain at -2000.
nl04 to 1.0e20
dud again. still not good startup.

Aug 28 1996 04:06:52:030PM960828025Steve Wolfe960828025: EF4 back to -1375.
RCUR seg 2 add RFload gain at -2000.
nl04 to 1.0e20

plasma - hmodes.
breakdown back at 5.9msec, strong current rise, but is it robust?
one or two short thrashes around 11msec

Aug 28 1996 04:14:49:940PM960828026Steve Wolfe960828026: nl04 to 0.7e20
fizzle. hardly any current. bd at 6.5msec
br actually looks more negative this time?
bz rising much more quickly.

Aug 28 1996 04:22:42:260PM960828027Steve Wolfe960828027: nl04 to 0.7e20
pre-puff down to 17msec
dud. does it want more gas? Br? what?

Aug 28 1996 04:33:36:060PM960828028Steve Wolfe960828028: nl04 to 0.7e20
pre-puff up to 19msec

plasma- late h-mode.
density still came out at .85
late bd 7.5msec
rf only has small overlap.

Aug 28 1996 04:42:50:530PM960828029Steve Wolfe960828029: nl04 to 0.6e20, reduce pg3 voltage to 10 after .5sec
Neon puff at 2sec for div. rga response

plasma. 2h-modes. got about .75e20 for density. valve is off after .5sec
still only small overlap on rf's

Aug 28 1996 04:54:36:030PM960828030Steve Wolfe960828030: nl04 to 1.2e20, raise pg3 voltage back to 35.
Neon puff at 2sec for div. rga response
dud.

Aug 28 1996 05:18:33:020PM960828031Steve Wolfe960828031: No changes!
nl04 to 1.2e20, raise pg3 voltage back to 35.
Neon puff at 2sec for div. rga response

plasma-1.1e20, 1h-mode
rf still not getting it together.
