Some progress, but not necessarily on MP 155. Up to 2.5 MW of RF power
were coupled in for several hundred msec. Outer gap was put under
hybrid control, feeding back on the RF loading. Plasma current was
raised to 1 MA. Stored energy reached .15 MJ which is as high as we
have gotten during this campaign. On the other hand, under these
conditions, we should have reached .2 MJ - The H factors never got above
1.5. The culprit seemed to be radiated power which rose very quickly
(as on 960828) despite boronization.

Shot 18 was anomalous and interesting, as it had significant RF power,
but very little heating and no H-mode. It followed several disruptions
and the suspicion is that the H/D ratio was too high.

Shots with clear H-modes, ELMfree and ELMy.

The Run Plan was:

This run was in support of MiniProposal #155 - H-Mode confinement scaling.
The MP asks for a scan of 5 parameters; Ip, Bt, ne, kappa, Power.
The plan was:

1. Begin with shot 960828019, re-establish operation
2. Raise Ip to 1 MA, set the target density to nebar=1.2e20 and start
increasing Prf.
3. When good quality H-modes are obtained, begin an Ip scan.
Ip =[0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4] at nebar=1.2,
Bt=5.3, k=1.7, Prf=max and repeat with target nebar at 2.0
4. Then scan Bt
Bt = [4.5, 4.9, 5.3, 5.7, 6.2] at nebar=1.2, Ip=1.0, k=1.7,
Prf=max and repeat with target nebar at 2.0

Steps #1 and 2 were accomplished, with lots of ELM-free and ELM-y H-modes,
but the quality of the H-modes was not good (H-factors=1.25-1.5), due to
high radiated power fractions. Only Ip=0.8 and 1.0 MA plasmas were done
today, all at 5.3 tesla. Machine operation was fairly good today, with more
than half of the shots being plasmas. The RF had a difficult time keeping
both transmitters on for the entire pulse.

Some things discovered today: recovering from 1 MA disruptions was difficult,
with 3-4 fizzles and duds occuring before the next good plasma.

Engineering, computing, and diagnostics today: EF1L looks like it may have
a bad gate pulse on 1 of the 12 SCR's. There were two duds due to
magnet resistance faults. RF was regularly reaching 2.5 MW, but only
for a portion of the RF pulse.

Scorecard: 43 shots = 23 plasmas + 11 fizzles + 9 duds (2 due to PS faults.)
