| Physics operator's summary for run 970515 MP#170A Restart Operation: May 1997 SL: Wolfe PO: Granetz EO: Bertolino, Silva Summary: Not much of an improvement over yesterday. The fizzle-to-dud ratio was significantly higher, but only three shots had appreciable current rises. I can't identify any obvious problems, other than the plasmas that we did get were obviously dirty and disruptive. Power supplies worked well until a couple of crowbars occurred late in the afternoon. Camac errors on both the engineering and magnetics highways began cropping up late in the afternoon as well. Raising the toroidal field to 5.9 tesla didn't seem to help things at all. Plasma shots: 002, 023, 037 Scorecard: 3 plasmas (all rather short duration, 2 disruptions) 24 fizzles 12 duds (2 due to power supply faults) 1 power supply test ---------- 40 total ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Run Plan for Thursday, 970515: We will pick up where we left off on Wednesday. All indications are that the tokamak could use a good cleaning, but other than that, all systems seem to be in working order. ECDC will be done overnight prior to the run. If we are successful at obtaining 0.6 MA full length shots, then Ip will be raised to 0.8 MA. Engineering setup for Thursday 15 May 1997 Discharge clean in deuterium overnight. Engineering setup as on 970514026 (high pre-charge case). TF on PLC control. Gas setup - hybrid enable B-top and K-side (aka A-side) fill K-side with 20 PSI of D2 fill B-top with 5 PSI of D2 fill B-side-lower with 4 PSI of Ar All of the usual gate valves should be enabled, assuming no vacuum problems with the corresponding diagnostics. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Detailed shot log: Shot 01 -- First "shot" was a no-power test of the TF scanner Shot 02 -- Plasma, disrupted at t=0.33 s. Ip flattopped at 0.6 MA. Succeeding in becoming diverted. Density reached nl_04=1.5e20 m-2 (demand is for 0.9e20). ECE says 250-300 eV, but that doesn't seem right, given that the loop voltage drops to 2 volts. This disruption went upwards, Ihalo_U=45 kA. Shot 03 -- Dud. (No changes were made from previous shot.) Null looks good. Shot 04 -- Fizzle. Very weak, very late. Keep banging away. No changes. Shot 05 -- Fizzle. A little earlier. Next shot: increase pre-pulse gas puff width from 24 to 26 ms. Shot 06 -- Fizzle. Breakdown at 11 ms. Data acquisition is taking a long time. Shot 07 -- Fizzle. Somewhat stronger flash, and earlier (7 ms). Continue repeating. Shot 08 -- Fizzle. 5 in a row. No changes. Shot 09 -- Dud. Next shot: increase pre-pulse gas puff width from 26 to 28 ms. Shot 10 -- Dud. Next shot: reduce pre-pulse gas puff width from 28 to 20 ms. Shot 11 -- Fizzle. Nearly went. No changes for next shot. Shot 12 -- Dud. Next shot: raise Btor to 5.8 tesla (170 kA). Also increase pre-pulse width from 20 to 22 ms. Shot 13 -- Fizzle. Btor=5.9 T (TF starts at -1.2 s, instead of -1.0). Breakdown was late. Next shot: reduce gas puff to 20 ms. Shot 14 -- Fizzle. Almost was some current. No changes for next shot. Shot 15 -- Dud. Next shot, raise EF4 by 15 amps (+0.6 mT) Shot 16 -- Fizzle. Breakdown was a little earlier (11 ms). Next shot: raise EF4 another +10 amps. Shot 17 -- Dud. Next shot, remove 10 amps from EF4. Shot 18 -- Fizzle. Nearly went. Next shot: increase pre-pulse width to 22 ms. Shot 19 -- Fizzle. Next shot: increase pre-pulse width to 24 ms. Shot 20 -- Fizzle. Next shot: raise Br offset from .0065 to .007 T. Shot 21 -- Fizzle. No changes next shot. Shot 22 -- Fizzle. Next shot: raise Br offset from .007 to .0075 T. Shot 23 -- Plasma. No disruption, current ramped down starting after 0.1 s. All indications are that the plasma crashed to the inside. Why? Next shot: no changes. Probably will be a dud anyway. Shot 24 -- Fizzle. No changes next shot. Shot 25 -- Fizzle. That's 8 non-duds in a row. Does that count as progress? Next shot: raise TF another 5 kA (PLC to 175 kA). Shot 26 -- Dud. Next shot: no changes ... see if it recovers by itself. Shot 27 -- Dud. Next shot: return TF to 170 kA. Shot 28 -- Fizzle. Null is obviously affected by the extra 5 kA of TF. On Steve's suggestion, I'll add 60 volts to the early OH1 programming. Shot 29 -- Fizzle. Null has some radial field in it. Next shot: reduce Br offset from .0075 to .007 T Shot 30 -- Fizzle. Camac errors on engineering tree. Null still has a little positive Br. Next shot: reduce Br offset from .007 to .0065 T. Shot 31 -- Fizzle. Camac errors on engineering and magnetics. Can't reconstruct null. Joe Bosco and Bill Parkin are power cycling some of the highway drivers. Next shot: subtract 15 amps from EF4 (i.e. make it more negative). Shot 32 -- Dud. Null is so-so. We're just playing around in the dark now. For next shot: reduce pre-fill puff to 17 ms. Shot 33 -- No 13.8 kV power supplies fired. Shot 34 -- Dud. Next shot: reload shot 02 from this morning. Shot 35 -- PF breaker pulled out before commutation. Shot 36 -- Fizzle. Camac errors on engineering and magnetics. Can't reconstruct the null. No changes next shot. Shot 37 -- Plasma. Ip=0.6 MA, major disruption at 0.24 s. Didn't divert. No changes next shot. Shot 38 -- Fizzle. No changes next shot. Shot 39 -- Fizzle. Camac errors on some engineering. Next shot, reduce early gas puffing on pulse gas valve #3. Shot 40 -- Fizzle. TF crowbarred during the rampdown. Next shot: reduce pre-pulse pulse to 20 ms. There are a number of blown fuses in the TF supplies, which will take about a half hour to repair and check. In lieu of Keith Burrell being the speaker at the Physics Dept. Colloquium, starting at 16:15, we will cancel the run now. |
