MP171A 40MHz Testing & Conditioning
Reproducible shots for RF testing and conditioning.
He3 not ready as of the beginning of run.
May do 2.6T.

RF testing started around 2:00 pm yesterday (970527).
Net RF power to the plasma was 0.3 MW on shot 970527054
from transmitter #3. Transmitter #4 is out of service
at the moment due to problems with the HV power supply.

This was a successful run as far as RF conditioning is
concerened. Up to 1MW of RF power was injected into
the plasma, helped by the high loading resistance.
The toroidal field was ramped from 5.4T to 2.8T.
Loading changed substantially when the H cyclotron
layer was just in front of the antenna. The H
concentration was still very high (around 20%),
and the radiated power was very high (approximately
100% of the injected RF power is radiated).
Very little heating was observed, but good H-mode was
observed at 2.6T on Shot 3 with a little less than 0.4MW of
RF power. This is believed to be because the H concentration
was still low. In spite of the good progress made today,
we still have many more things to check out before
the 40MHz system is ready for physics experiments.

Physics operator summary for run 970528

MP 171A, 40 MHz RF conditioning and testing

SL: Takase
PO: Granetz
EO: Bertolino, Silva

Summary: Good progress was made on bringing up the available RF power. Most of
the discharges had Btor ramping down to 2.8 T by t=1.0 s, with two
RF pulses: one around Btor=4 T and the other at Btor=2.8 T. Plasma
current was also ramped down from 0.8 to 0.6 MA in order to keep q95
just above 3.0. Power levels up to 1 MW were launched, and a few
H-modes were seen. Shot 003 had a very good H-mode at 2.8 T. The
machine ran very well, except that disruption recovery was somewhat of
a problem. The nitrogen leak is also getting worse. Plasmas were
achieved on 2/3 of the attempts.

Note: He3 was not available for this run. It should be available by
tomorrow.

Scorecard: 31 plasmas
14 fizzles
2 duds (1 due to power supply problems)

Run Plan for Wednesday, 970528:

We will pick up where we left off on Tuesday. The machine is running
pretty well and the 40 MHz RF is beginning to operate. The main thrust of
today's run will be to continue debugging and conditioning the RF at 4
tesla. We will probably want to introduce He3 at some time during the run.

Engineering setup for Wednesday 28 May 1997

Discharge clean in deuterium overnight.
Engineering setup as on 970527054, with TF under hybrid control

Gas setup - hybrid enable all valves
fill K-side with 20 PSI of D2
fill B-top with 5 PSI of D2
fill B-side-lower with 4 PSI of Ar
*******************************************************************************

** NOTE: ** Have the He3 bottle hooked up to PG valve #2 (B-side_upper ??),
and have the system ready to go for the run if at all possible,
BUT DO NOT FILL THE PLENUM YET.

*******************************************************************************
The following gate valves should be enabled, assuming no vacuum problems
with the corresponding diagnostics (ECE, TCI, PCX & TCX, VUV)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Detailed shot log:

Hybrid coldstart done; no problems.
Reload last shot of yesterday (970527054), but ramp CLEARIN down
faster after t=1.3 s.

Shot 01 -- No OH1, EF1's, TF. Note: we had to back out of a shot cycle prior
running this shot, and that caused some of the PLC's to timeout.
The same problem happened yesterday. Apparently we have to go
through a full shot cycle to reset everything properly.

Shot 02 -- Plasma. Good shot. Ip=0.8 MA, nl=0.9-1.0e20 m-2. Prf=0.3+ MW.
Looks like there was an H-mode during the RF.

Next shot: ramp CLEARIN down even faster after t=1.3 s. Program in
an additional Btor ramp down to 2.6 T starting at t=0.8 s.

Shot 03 -- Plasma. Btor rampdown to 2.6 T didn't quite flattop. Disrupted at
t=1.21 s when q95 gets down to 2.6 (operator error!). Lower halo
current of 200 kA. Two H-modes at the two different times.

Next shot: get rid of 4.0 T flattop...rampdown to 2.6 T for most of
the shot. Reduce Ip to 0.6 MA for most of the shot.

Shot 04 -- Fizzle. 60 kA.

Next shot: try again, no changes.

Shot 05 -- Fizzle. Very dim.

Next shot: Change Ip programming so that it's 0.8 MA until t=0.6 s,
and then rampdown to 0.6 MA by t=0.75 s.

Shot 06 -- Dud. Null looks crummy.

Next shot: reduce Br offset from .0065 to .006

Shot 07 -- Plasma. Good shot. Ip=0.8 MA until 0.6 s, then rampdown to 0.6 MA
by t=0.75 s. Btor makes it down to 2.8 T at 1.0 s, then flattops.
q95=3.1. Right gap ramps from 1 cm to 2 cm during the shot. No
H-mode during the low-field RF pulse.

Next shot: enable argon puff and move argon pulse earlier by 0.1 s.
Also, ramp RCUR in by 5 mm during the shot to try and keep the outer
gap constant.

Shot 08 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.16 s. Argon? It came on strong but seems
to pump out by 0.8 s. I had the wrong direction on the change to
RCUR.

Next shot: ramp RCUR outwards by 5 mm instead of inwards!

There's a break in the action while Josh does something to one of the camac
highways. It's taking longer than he told me it would.

Shot 09 -- Fizzle. 60 kA. Null okay.

Next shot: try again, no changes.

Shot 10 -- Plasma. Good shot. Outboard gap stays pretty constant at 1.2 cm.

Next shot: add another argon puff at t=1.0 s. Ramp CLEARIN down
faster still at end of shot.

Shot 11 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.10 s. Second argon puff?

Next shot: reduce 2nd argon puff from 27 to 20 ms.

Shot 12 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.71 s (during rampdown from 0.8 to 0.6 MA).
No sign of any moly injection. No sign of any vertical instability.

Next shot: no changes.

Shot 13 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.34 s. Lots of magnetics camac errors, but
Josh was able to recover the data. EFIT will have to be rerun.

Next shot: no PCS changes, only RF timing changes.

Shot 14 -- Fizzle. 50 kA. Null is not great.

Next shot: try again, no changes.

Shot 15 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.19 s. I don't think it's the argon.

Next shot: no PCS changes. Brian's new B-FSP (Belching Fast
Scanning Probe) will operate with helium on the next shot at
t=0.7 s.

Shot 16 -- Fizzle. 50 kA.

Next shot: no changes

Shot 17 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.34 s. Still no H-modes.

Next shot: no changes.

Shot 18 -- Fizzle. 50 kA. Null is fair.

Next shot: no changes.

Shot 19 -- Fizzle. 50 kA.

Next shot: no changes.

Shot 20 -- Fizzle. 50 kA. Time to make a change to the null. There is a
little too much Bz.

Next shot: add -15 amps to EF4 in segment 1.

Shot 21 -- Fizzle. 45 kA.

Next shot: try changing Br offset from .006 to .0065 (no good reason
for doing this though).

Shot 22 -- Fizzle. Very weak. Br got worse.

Next shot: change Br offset from .0065 to .0055. If that doesn't
do it, I'll reload an old shot.

Shot 23 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.32 s. Prf=0.4 MW. No H-modes.

Next shot: no PCS changes.

Shot 24 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.25 s. No H-modes. Brian reports a very
bright helium plume from the B-FSP.

Next shot: tweak CLEARIN around t=1.25 s.

Shot 25 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.30 s. Plasma is still not limited at the
end of the shot.

Next shot: rampdown CLEARIN even faster.

Shot 26 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.08 s, at the start of the 2nd RF pulse.
The TCI gate valve has closed prematurely during the last two
shots.

Next shot: turn off the argon valve permissive.

Shot 27 -- Plasma. Great shot, ramped nearly all the way down. Magnetics
camac errors, but I recovered the data. TCI is having bad problems
with its gate valve. This shot was limited after 1.30 s. Argon??

Next shot: keep the argon off.

Shot 28 -- Plasma. Another great shot, ramped nearly all the way down again.
TCI didn't have a problem this time.

Next shot: re-enable the argon, but get rid of the second puff, and
reduce the first puff from 27 to 20 ms.

Shot 29 -- Plasma. Good shot, but didn't last quite as long as the no-argon
shots. Still no H-modes.

Next shot: no changes.

Shot 30 -- Plasma. Good shot.

Next shot: reduce argon pulse from 20 to 18 ms.

Shot 31 -- Plasma. Good shot.

Next shot: no PCS changes.

Shot 32 -- Plasma. Good shot.

Next shot: no PCS changes

Shot 33 -- Plasma. It's becoming pleasantly boring! I probably just jinxed
it. The first RF pulse is reaching 0.8 MW. Second RF pulse is also
ramping up.

Next shot: no PCS changes.

Shot 34 -- Plasma. Good shot.

Next shot: no PCS changes

Shot 35 -- Plasma. Good shot.

Next shot: no PCS changes

Shot 36 -- Plasma, but hard disruption at 0.65 s. Prad_2pi started increasing
at 0.637 s.

Next shot: turn off argon valve permissive

Shot 37 -- Fizzle. 50 kA. Null looks okay.

Next shot: try again, no changes.

Shot 38 -- Plasma. Great shot, ramped almost all the way down (no argon).
There was an H-mode on the first RF pulse, and a lot of dithering
during the second RF pulse.

Next shot: no PCS changes. Argon still disabled.

Shot 39 -- Fizzle. 50 kA. Nice looking null.

Next shot: no PCS changes. Re-enable argon valve.

Shot 40 -- Fizzle. 50 kA.

Next shot: try again, no changes.

Shot 41 -- Plasma. Good shot. Disrupted at 1.36 s. Base pressure is
remaining high between shots (>3e-6 torr).

We are going to have a break in the action to allow a number of people cell
access and lab access. But I hope to close up in time to try for a few more
plasmas.

Next shot: no PCS changes.

Shot 42 -- Plasma. Good shot. Disrupted at 1.38 s. Only one RF pulse.

Next shot: no PCS changes.

Shot 43 -- Plasma. Good shot. Disrupted at 1.40 s. Only one RF pulse again.

Next shot: no PCS changes.

Shot 44 -- Plasma. Good shot. Disrupted at 1.40 s. Got both RF pulses, but
no H-mode at the low field.

Next shot: increase density demand from nl=0.9e20 to 1.1e20 m-2

Shot 45 -- Plasma. Good shot. Got slightly higher density. Disrupted at
1.35 s. No magnetics traq_1 data. Prf=1 MW on the first pulse,
lower on the second pulse.

Next shot: increase density demand from nl=1.1 to 1.2e20 m-2.

Shot 46 -- Plasma. Good shot. Disrupted at 1.30 s. Got the requested
density. Only one RF pulse. Base pressure was very high just
prior to this shot (3.7e-6 torr).

Next shot: no PCS changes.

Shot 47 -- Fizzle. Base pressure was 4.6e-6 just prior to this shot because
we were rushing to squeeze in another shot. Nitrogen peak is
very high. The leak is getting worse.

End of run.

May 28 1997 11:18:31:910AM970528012Robert Granetz
Shot 12 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.71 s (during rampdown from 0.8 to 0.6 MA).
No sign of any moly injection. No sign of any vertical instability.

Next shot: no changes.
May 28 1997 11:30:19:690AM970528013Robert Granetz
Shot 13 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.34 s. Lots of magnetics camac errors, but
Josh was able to recover the data. EFIT will have to be rerun.

Next shot: no PCS changes, only RF timing changes.
May 28 1997 11:37:02:670AM970528014Robert Granetz
Shot 14 -- Fizzle. 50 kA. Null is not great.

Next shot: try again, no changes.
May 28 1997 11:49:13:980AM970528015Robert GranetzShot 15 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.19 s. I don't think it's the argon.

Next shot: no PCS changes. Brian's new B-FSP (Belching Fast
Scanning Probe) will operate with helium on the next shot at
t=0.7 s.
May 28 1997 12:00:30:110PM970528016Robert Granetz
Shot 16 -- Fizzle. 50 kA.

Next shot: no changes
May 28 1997 12:05:47:990PM970528017Robert Granetz
Shot 17 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.34 s. Still no H-modes.

Next shot: no changes.

May 28 1997 12:24:38:690PM970528019Robert Granetz
Shot 19 -- Fizzle. 50 kA.

Next shot: no changes.
May 28 1997 12:31:31:470PM970528020Robert Granetz
Shot 20 -- Fizzle. 50 kA. Time to make a change to the null. There is a
little too much Bz.

Next shot: add -15 amps to EF4 in segment 1.
May 28 1997 12:40:41:550PM970528021Robert Granetz
Shot 21 -- Fizzle. 45 kA.

Next shot: try changing Br offset from .006 to .0065 (no good reason
for doing this though).
May 28 1997 12:46:03:000PM970528022Robert Granetz
Shot 22 -- Fizzle. Very weak. Br got worse.

Next shot: change Br offset from .0065 to .0055. If that doesn't
do it, I'll reload an old shot.
May 28 1997 01:00:38:020PM970528023Robert Granetz
Shot 23 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.32 s. Prf=0.4 MW. No H-modes.

Next shot: no PCS changes.
May 28 1997 01:12:30:100PM970528024Robert Granetz
Shot 24 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.25 s. No H-modes. Brian reports a very
bright helium plume from the B-FSP.

Next shot: tweak CLEARIN around t=1.25 s.
May 28 1997 01:24:53:010PM970528025Robert Granetz
Shot 25 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.30 s. Plasma is still not limited at the
end of the shot.

Next shot: rampdown CLEARIN even faster.
May 28 1997 01:38:00:720PM970528026Robert Granetz
Shot 26 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.08 s, at the start of the 2nd RF pulse.
The TCI gate valve has closed prematurely during the last two
shots.

Next shot: turn off the argon valve permissive.
May 28 1997 01:50:26:650PM970528027Robert Granetz
Shot 27 -- Plasma. Great shot, ramped nearly all the way down. Magnetics
camac errors, but I recovered the data. TCI is having bad problems
with its gate valve. This shot was limited after 1.30 s. Argon??

Next shot: keep the argon off.
May 28 1997 01:57:09:660PM970528028Robert Granetz
Shot 28 -- Plasma. Another great shot, ramped nearly all the way down again.
TCI didn't have a problem this time.

Next shot: re-enable the argon, but get rid of the second puff, and
reduce the first puff from 27 to 20 ms.
May 28 1997 02:06:21:030PM970528029Robert Granetz
Shot 29 -- Plasma. Good shot, but didn't last quite as long as the no-argon
shots. Still no H-modes.

Next shot: no changes.
May 28 1997 02:14:25:080PM970528030Robert Granetz
Shot 30 -- Plasma. Good shot.

Next shot: reduce argon pulse from 20 to 18 ms.
May 28 1997 02:21:46:610PM970528031Robert Granetz
Shot 31 -- Plasma. Good shot.

Next shot: no PCS changes.
May 28 1997 02:29:52:650PM970528032Robert Granetz
Shot 32 -- Plasma. Good shot.

Next shot: no PCS changes
May 28 1997 02:39:20:670PM970528033Robert Granetz
Shot 33 -- Plasma. It's becoming pleasantly boring! I probably just jinxed
it. The first RF pulse is reaching 0.8 MW. Second RF pulse is also
ramping up.

Next shot: no PCS changes.
May 28 1997 02:49:19:440PM970528034Robert Granetz
Shot 34 -- Plasma. Good shot.

Next shot: no PCS changes
May 28 1997 02:57:05:220PM970528035Robert Granetz
Shot 35 -- Plasma. Good shot.

Next shot: no PCS changes
May 28 1997 03:08:37:000PM970528036Robert Granetz
Shot 36 -- Plasma, but hard disruption at 0.65 s. Prad_2pi started increasing
at 0.637 s.

Next shot: turn off argon valve permissive
May 28 1997 03:15:44:360PM970528037Robert Granetz
Shot 37 -- Fizzle. 50 kA. Null looks okay.

Next shot: try again, no changes.
May 28 1997 03:24:35:780PM970528038Robert Granetz
Shot 38 -- Plasma. Great shot, ramped almost all the way down (no argon).
There was an H-mode on the first RF pulse, and a lot of dithering
during the second RF pulse.

Next shot: no PCS changes. Argon still disabled.
May 28 1997 03:31:10:960PM970528039Robert Granetz
Shot 39 -- Fizzle. 50 kA. Nice looking null.

Next shot: no PCS changes. Re-enable argon valve.
May 28 1997 03:38:33:440PM970528040Robert GranetzShot 40 -- Fizzle. 50 kA.

Next shot: try again, no changes.
May 28 1997 04:09:39:160PM970528041Robert Granetz
Shot 41 -- Plasma. Good shot. Disrupted at 1.36 s. Base pressure is
remaining high between shots (>3e-6 torr).

We are going to have a break in the action to allow a number of people cell
access and lab access. But I hope to close up in time to try for a few more
plasmas.
May 28 1997 04:23:46:160PM970528042Robert GranetzShot 42 -- Plasma. Good shot. Disrupted at 1.38 s. Only one RF pulse.

Next shot: no PCS changes.
May 28 1997 04:31:43:550PM970528043Robert Granetz
Shot 43 -- Plasma. Good shot. Disrupted at 1.40 s. Only one RF pulse again.

Next shot: no PCS changes.
May 28 1997 04:42:10:300PM970528044Robert GranetzShot 44 -- Plasma. Good shot. Disrupted at 1.40 s. Got both RF pulses, but
no H-mode at the low field.

Next shot: increase density demand from nl=0.9e20 to 1.1e20 m-2
May 28 1997 04:49:40:350PM970528045Robert Granetz
Shot 45 -- Plasma. Good shot. Got slightly higher density. Disrupted at
1.35 s. No magnetics traq_1 data. Prf=1 MW on the first pulse,
lower on the second pulse.

Next shot: increase density demand from nl=1.1 to 1.2e20 m-2.
May 28 1997 04:57:55:590PM970528046Robert Granetz
Shot 46 -- Plasma. Good shot. Disrupted at 1.30 s. Got the requested
density. Only one RF pulse. Base pressure was very high just
prior to this shot (3.7e-6 torr).

Next shot: no PCS changes.
May 28 1997 05:02:07:390PM970528047Robert Granetz
Shot 47 -- Fizzle. Base pressure was 4.6e-6 just prior to this shot because
we were rushing to squeeze in another shot. Nitrogen peak is
very high. The leak is getting worse.

End of run.
