MP171A 40MHz testing/conditioning
Transmitters #3 and #4 ready (1MW into dummy load)
Top priority: RF power into plasma at a level of 1MW from each transmitter.

MP178 MCCD D-He3 piggyback exploration
cryopump ready to be tested

Not a very productive run. We had 5 shots (36, 39, 40, 44, 47)
which made it into plasma current rampdown. The machine was
incredibly dirty. Nevertheless, we got about 0.3MW into plasma
from transmitter #4. We have also started looking at the
relative phase between the two transmitters.

Physics operator summary for 970604

SL: Takase

Run 970604 was in support of Mini-Proposal #170 - Restart Alcator C-Mod and #171
RF Conditioning. The goals for today are to try and produce good plasmas and get at least
1MW from each antenna.

Plan:
start with 970528044 and try to make plasmas until the day is over

The goals were not reached today. Although some plasmas were produced, they
were neither very good nor reproducible. The RF group did not reach 1MW out of
each antenna although there was power launched.

Plasmas today were very dirty with slow current rises, high loop voltage, high
radiation. etc. Breakdowns, however, were quite robust with only three duds
and a few other late breakdowns.
The offset on RCUR in segment 1 was lowered to 6600 by the end of
the day to help match the Bz ramp with the slow current ramp. Be wary of using this startup with a clean machine. Also, the
drawn value of IP was adjusted over the day to try and match
the actual value obtained during segment switch.
In the beginning, only short plasmas were produced, and looked to be
dominated by something other than deuterium. Minor disruptions
were the rule for the first half of the run. Hydrogen fraction
was also greater than the deuterium throughout the day.
During OH1 crossover, the plasma would kiss the inner wall and not be
able to handle the subsequent influx of junk. Ramping the
CLEARIN fast enough but not too fast got through this dirt
event.
Late in the run, unexplained fueling events were occuring starting
at about .25s. Changing the ramp rates of CLEARIN, RXL, and/or
ZXL did not alleviate the problem. Densities were climbing as
high as 2e20 with the gas turned off. Shot 047, which was a
reload of an earlier shot did not have this problem.

Considering the vacuum events of the previous week, this was not a bad run.
problems.

Engineering, computing, and diagnostics today: Over voltage the OH1 on a couple disruptions
but other than that, a good engineering day. CAMAC highways performed well. A crash
of DAIGLE caused some data from one shot to be lost as the servers didn't serve.

Scorecard: 47 shots = 28 plasmas + 16 fizzles + 3 duds
