| Beginning MP148 (80 MHz RF Conditioning and Testing). The discharges will be constant throughout the run (BT = 5.4 T, Ip = 0.8 - 1. MA, nel = 0.5-1.0x10^20). Hopefully, the hydrogen concentration will be low enough to permit efficient minority heating. The top priority is to condition the antennas and maximize the coupled power. The RF will require 5-7 shots at low power to get calibration data for matching program before trying higher power. If time permits, MP142 (Ion tails and low density limit H-mode) will be started. shot comments 001 ef4 test 002 ef4 test 003 ef4 test 004 OH test 005 dud 006 fizzle FMIT #2 had no fizzle detect signal 007 fizzle (weaker than previous) still no fizzle detect on #2 008 plasma FMIT#1 ran, but FMIT#2 faulted 009 plasma switched ps #2 to old setting from '96 campaign; moved st #1 to start calibration; FMIT#2 faulted 010 plasma FMIT#2 still faulting 011 fizzle 012 fizzle 013 plasma lowered multiplication factor to 1 on FMIT#2, both transmitters ran 014 plasma changed ST#1 713->733 015 plasma changed ST#1 733->685; ST#2 2824->3177 016 plasma changed ST#1 685->550; ST#2 3177->3401 |

From: WOOD::MARMAR Date: 16-JUN-1997 23:31:12 Subj: physop run summary, 970616 MP148, 80 MHz tuning SL Wukitch PO Marmar EO Silva The morning was devoted to completion of RF tasks. An EF4 test, at about noon, showed a problem, which was solved by removal of the new reactors which had been added. The first plasma attempt came at about 3:00 pm. The first two plasmas showed evidence of some non-thermals early; this was solved after an EF4 preprogram tweak (10 Amp less -ve). The "sparker" was used for the first time. Triggering it at -.01s gave very early breakdown and current rise, resulting in strong fizzles. Triggering it at -.002s led to reproducible breakdown at about 6 ms. There were a total of 7 1MA plasmas, and 4 fizzles out of the 11 attempts with all power supplies. Attempts to lengthen the rampdown were made without obvious improvement. See the logbook for shot by shot tweak comments. |
