| Run 970619 Mini-proposal 167: Impurity Screening: Divertor Compression and the Role of Core Impurity Confinement Physics Operator: Steve Wolfe Session Leader: Bruce Lipschultz Engineering Operator: Frank Silva ('dad') The purpose of this run was to try and deal with the following question: (1) Only a small fraction of injected impurities are found in the core. Where are they going? The new Divertor RGA 'Prisma' was used to measure the neutral density in the divertor. The core levels were determined from McPherson and HIREX measurements. The injected quantities will be determined from calibration of the piezo valves used. The mp also includes studies of RF-heated H-mode plasmas but only the ohmic issues were addressed today. During this run we obtained some baseline data, primarily with Ar. The primary difficulty was the run itself. We had reproducibility problems that may be attributable to lack of an ionization gauge with a 'view' of the plasma. In addition, there was difficulty in achieving densities above nl04=1.3e20. As we pushed the density up the the plasma became very disruptive. And each disruption seemed to cause 2 fizzles..... In looking at the Ar data, the primary shots that are usable are 5,15,17,20,22 and 23 with 5 being the baseline shot. Analysis of the RGA data using the calibration numbers from the offline VTS work indicates high Ar neutral densities in the divertor (of order .1 mTorr Ar) with nAr/n_neutral there ~ .3 percent. The compression of Ar in the divertor compared to the core, n_Ar(div)/n_Ar(core) ~ 150! Based on these numbers we can account for all of the injected Ar (the amount injected needs an up to date calibration as well). These are high numbers so final analysis will await calibrations on the tokamak. Jim Terry monitored Li-like Ar in the core and found that for typical injections the Ar level stayed constant after the puff. However, for shot 22, the time behaviour was different. At the partial detachment from the outer divertor the Ar level in the core rose by a factor of 2 (.8 sec). At 1.07 second there was another jump in the brightness due to the 'shark fin'. This may be attributed to a rise in density of Ar and/or D2 in the core. We may have obtained some data with N2 but the signal, if there for the Prisma RGA was negligible. We tried injection of Ne for the remainder of the run but no plasma shots were had. | Physop Summmary for 970619 MP: 167 Impurity compression and transport SL: Blip PO: wolfe EO: Silva,Cochrane,Bertolino Run Plan: -------- Engineering setup: ------------------ Power system as for 970617031 Gas setup: B-top 5psi D2 K-side 20psi D2 B-side lower 4psi Argon J-Bottom 4psi Argon (J-bottom) Note: On Wed. night, Tommy purged the B-side upper plenum with D2 and filled it to 12.4 PSI of He3, then disabled SG6 again, as well as PUR1, so the only access to the plenum is P1IN. This should not be touched before the run; we will need to put some of the He3 from B-side upper to J-bot later in the run. To start, Hybrid ENABLE on B-top, K-side, and B-side-upper, but NOT on B-side-LOWER. Also, plenum output valves on both B-side-UPPER and J-BOT should be open. Gate valves: VUV,ECE,PCX, TCX, assuming the relevant vacuums are ok. Run plan: -------- The purpose of this run is to determine where the "screened fraction" of injected impurities (the part that never shows up in the core) goes, and to investigate the role of core transport on the penetration factor for injected impurities. Impurity gas puffing (Ar, N2, and He3) from J-bottom will be used to obtain ohmic plasma data at several densities, all at 1MA. We'll use a shot from Tuesday as a basis, probably 970617031. The initial density setting will be 0.8e20 (NL4), then raise the density to get detachment. After a background shot with no impurity puff, the first impurity gas will be Argon, using J-bot plenum (PG2) and a pulse time (0.3) and width of 30msec The B-side lower will not be used for these first shots. After several densities with Argon puffing (attached to detached), change to N2 puff from J-bottom, then He3. RF should piggyback during the run. RF timing should be 0.5 to 0.7 sec. Results: ------ This was a really painful run, with terrible startup reliability. We ended up with only 13 plasmas out of 36 attempts. Argon response was obtained for two densities, and N2 response for 1 density. An attempt to inject Ne at the end of the run was unsuccessful because we could get nothing but fizzles. He3 was never attempted. Some useful data was obtained, but probably less than half of the planned experiment was completed. Early in the run we had problems with cooling, and clearing the O2 alarms for cell access. Unfortunately, several accesses were required to get essential systems on-line. By 11:20 we had only had 6 attempts, and only two of them were plasmas. Most of the fizzles in the first six shots seemed to correlate with unbalanced EF4 cooling, but later in the run the balance was good and we were still plagued with non-plasmas. We had an additional delay due to a tf crowbar following shot 6. At about the time the fuses had been replaced and the hipot completed, the IGT torus ion gauge died and had to be swapped to the backup gauge, which doesn't have a line-of-sight to the plasma. It later turned out that the IGT gauge was ok, and the problem was a loose connector at the gauge controller. We also lost some time on a data server hang. Attempts to fix the startup were unsuccessful. I tried resymmetrizing the EF2's, and several tweaks to EF4, RCUR offset, and V_OH1 between shots 6 and 11, with no good startups. Finally for shot 12 I gave up and reloaded #5, which also didn't work. A counter-intuitive Br tweak resulted(?) in good plasmas on 14,15,17,19,20,22,and 23 [7 for 10], but after a 1MA disruption on 23 the fizzles and duds were back with a vengence. It probably didn't help that most of the plasmas later in the run disrupted, either from high density, impurities, or injections, but that may not have been the whole story. The fields seemed to be varying significantly from shot to shot, with no program changes. After shot 22 the replacement ITG ion gauge stopped working, so we left it off for the remainder of the run. It was necessary to have Joe force an interlock in the ladder logic to keep having the ITG off not cause a gas-fill-fault condition. As noted above, the ITG problem was actually with a loose connector, which was fixed after the run. It is not clear that the loss of the direct-view ITG affected the startup, although there were a few duds during the time with no ion gauge, while only fizzles were obtained earlier. There were numerous late breakdowns throughout the run. The new JBOT piezo, which was supposed to be used for all the impurity injection today, took a while to get going, despite having been exercised last night with a DC supply. It appears this valve has a 30msec deadtime, so you have to provide at least that long a pulse to get anything out of it. The differential gauges on the new small plenums seem to work well, and allow an absolute measure of the injected gas. Since we weren't getting a response initially from the JBOT valve, the Argon experiments were done using B-side-lower. Lots of time was spent purging and re-filling various plenums as we tried to change gases. Getting to high density (nl4 > 1.2e20 m^-2) was problematic. While we were able to get up to 1.4e20 with heavy puffing from two valves, these shots all ended in disruptions. After the run, Brian determined that the burping probe capillary is leaking into the torus when he attempts to fill the probe plenum, so that no gas ends up in the plenum. This apparently happened sometime during the run today. The burping probe is now out of commission until this can be repaired. The one piece of good operational news today is that the hybrid wavegen glitch seems to have been diagnosed and remedied. TWF confirmed that the wavegen failures yesterday corresponded to cases where the DECODER INIT was not completed before the BIT_WAVEGEN INIT, so that the wavegen would have fired when the decoder got init'ed and been inert thereafter. This was thought to be excluded by the fact that the CAMAC initialization on DAQA normally runs much faster than the BITBUS initialization on SHAPE, but this apparently is not the case on rare occasions. Tom added an explicit dependence to the BIT_WAVEGEN INIT task to force it to wait until after the DECODER is armed. The RF was successful in getting up to P>1.5MW, and we had some H-modes during the RF pulses. The RF group decided that the tuning and conditioning so far is adequate to go ahead with tomorrow's physics run, rather than requiring an additional conditioning day. Hopefully Goetz will have a better time with startups than I did. Scorecard: ---------- tests 0 duds 3 fizzles 20 plasmas 13 ------- -- shots 36 |

| Jun 19 1997 02:02:33:270PM | 970619019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 19: change to 20psi of D2 in J-bot. , increase pg2 width to 100msec Increase nl04 to 1.3e20 plasma to 1.45sec, nl=1.2e20 unclear if anything vcame from j-bot, there is some drop in demand at the right time goetz didn't get data, just repeat. |
| Jun 19 1997 02:06:53:620PM | 970619020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 20: No changes plasma to 1.45 sec go on to next density |
| Jun 19 1997 02:16:57:340PM | 970619021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 21: nl04 to 1.5e20 add a second j-bot pulse at .79sec to .91sec (roughly) fizzle late bd, 11msec just go again. |
| Jun 19 1997 02:28:45:540PM | 970619022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 22: increase nl04 to 1.7e20 (go for it, need to get a detached case). add a second j-bot pulse at .79sec to .91sec (roughly) plasma - 1.36sec, nl4= 1.4e20 looks like the jbot valve is getting conditioned. |
| Jun 19 1997 02:52:27:190PM | 970619023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 23: take a background = no enable on B-side-lower IGT is dead again, both filaments; it must be the controller or the cable. Leave it off, see if we can run at all. Need to get Yuri or Joe to bypass the fill fault so it will enable the valves. still need to bypass torvac at the state machine plasma - disruption at around .88sec |
| Jun 19 1997 03:12:15:650PM | 970619024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 24: pg2 (jbot) to 8psi N2, 30msec pulse at .7sec pg1 (b-side lower) 20psi D2+3.75psi Ar, 100msec at .6sec Purging the Ar would take too long, and we seem to need the extra puff; however this is going to be a lot of Ar. fizzle. bd at 11msec |
| Jun 19 1997 03:22:13:500PM | 970619025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 25: go again, but chicken out on the pg1 pulse pg2 (jbot) to 8psi N2, 30msec pulse at .7sec Get rid of the pulse pg1 (b-side lower) 20psi D2+3.75psi Ar Purging the Ar would take too long, and we seem to need the extra puff; however this is going to be a lot of Ar. fizzle. 55ka, late bd (10msec) |
| Jun 19 1997 03:36:29:360PM | 970619026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 26: ef4 from 1325 to 1330 (just to do something). pg2 (jbot) to 8psi N2, 30msec pulse at .7sec plasma, disrupts at around .92sec bd around 9msec (still late) h-modes during rf around .6sec |
| Jun 19 1997 03:46:43:130PM | 970619027 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 27: back to 20msec Ar at .3sec from pg1 60msec pg2 N2 pulse @0.7sec back off nl4 demand to 1.4e20 (all we're getting anyway) dud! |
| Jun 19 1997 03:52:43:270PM | 970619028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 28:increase pre-puff to 28msec back to 20msec Ar at .3sec from pg1 60msec pg2 N2 pulse @0.7sec back off nl4 demand to 1.4e20 (all we're getting anyway) fizzle. bd at 10msec |
| Jun 19 1997 04:02:11:900PM | 970619029 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 29: go to 80msec on N2 puff, back off nl4 to 1.2e20 plasma to 1.46sec, nl4 =1.1e20 bd at 7.1msec |
| Jun 19 1997 04:15:10:670PM | 970619030 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 30: Baseline shot, disable and purge b-side lower and jbot. dud. Null doesn't look bad, |
| Jun 19 1997 04:23:31:800PM | 970619030 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 30: no change Baseline shot, disable and purge b-side lower and jbot. plasma disrupts at .57sec they think it's ok for a baseline! disruption looks like an injection, |
| Jun 19 1997 04:34:37:400PM | 970619032 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 32: 4psi Ne through jbot (60msec pulse @0.3sec) fizzle, 45ka, bd @7.5msec, CII at .01mW/cm2/ster |
| Jun 19 1997 04:41:59:890PM | 970619033 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 33: no changes 4psi Ne through jbot (60msec pulse @0.3sec) another fizzle. CII down to .007, bd at 7msec |
| Jun 19 1997 04:49:32:260PM | 970619034 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 34: no changes 4psi Ne through jbot (60msec pulse @0.3sec) another fizzle, late bd (9msec) |
| Jun 19 1997 04:55:57:800PM | 970619035 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 35: Rcur offset from 6600 to 6500 4psi Ne through jbot (60msec pulse @0.3sec) fizzle, later bd 12msec Try the other direction for the last shot. |
| Jun 19 1997 05:02:51:720PM | 970619036 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 36: Rcur offset from 6500 to 6700 (opposite direction to 35) 4psi Ne through jbot (60msec pulse @0.3sec) fizzle, another late 12msec breakdown. |
