RF had multiple problems. The two antennas did not run together for any significant amount of time. The arc detection circuit for the E-port antenna was not working, power feedback did not work, and the plasma position feedback signal was not getting to the hybrid. H-mode (mostly "ELM-free") was obtained on most shots which made RF troubleshooting difficult. | Physop Summary for Tues. 970624 MP 148 RF conditioning 163 High q|| divertor studies (piggyback) SL Takase (if sufficient progress is made, then Goetz takes over for MP163) PO Wolfe EO Silva,Bertolino,Cochrane Run Plan -------- This will be the first post-boronization run of the campaign The purposes of the run are: 1) Get both transmitters running together into plasma, at high power 2) Get physics-quality H-mode plasmas, including EDA if possible 3) Re-install and exercise the RF-loading position feedback circuit, preferably on H-mode plasmas 4) Try to reduce the H/(H+D) ratio, probably by using between-shot ECDC in D2 5) Try to improve startup reliability 6) Develop and test impurity puffing feedback in support of MP163 (piggyback) 7) Test D pellet injector We will start with a 1MA shot with NL4 set to 8e19 and outer gap of 1cm. Things to try on startup: Drop RCUR offset to <6000 Change RCUR waveform Increase OH pre-programmed voltages Decrease EF3 pre-programmed voltage Drop EF4 pre-programmed voltage, delay EF4 swing Symmetrize EF2's, and perhaps delay positive swing I want to try these ideas at the beginning of the run, but may need to punt if we aren't getting plasmas and the RF is ready to go. First priority is to get the power out of the two antennas operating together. Target is P>2.5MW. We need to demonstrate access to H-mode after boronization. This requires reasonably efficient heating, which may require better control of H/(H+D). This will need to be monitored during the run; it is possible that the boronization will solve the problem. If not, we will test between-shot ECDC in D2. The RF-loading feedback on RCUR needs to be demonstrated again. It would be best to do this in H-mode, but it can be tested in L-mode if necessary. If we get that far, we will increase the density and look for EDA H-modes. These are required for the MP163 experiment, although development and testing of the algorithm could be done without EDA. When ready, we will begin puffing N2 from the J-bot valve under feedback control from the bolometer signals. We may also test the D pellet injector late in the shot on a few discharges. The DPI is required if we decide to do MP158 on Wednesday We reduced the diborane bottle pressure by 71 psi during the boronization last night --> 1038 Angstrom boron layer if uniformly applied to the vessel surface. PCS setup: LOAD_FROM 970617031 Import seg1 from 97062037 Seg 2 changes: NL04 to 8e19 Seg1 changes: RCUR offset to 6000 RCUR waveform to .653, constant EF4_volt to 600,leave first non-zero point at -.003 OH1_volt to 180V from .005 to .015 OH2_volt to 10V from .005 to .015 copy V_ef2L ->V_EF2U decrease pg4 puff from 32 to 22 (note that I should get 20% more gas due to higher pressure) Results: ------- The high priority goals were NOT accomplished. Some of the others were. Referring to the above list: 1) We did not get E-port ICRF working; it seems to be somewhat worse off than when we started. It's arc detectors are apparently not working; after this was determined, it was turned off for the remainder of the run. 2) H-mode was obtained on several shots, with only D-port transmitter. All were ELM-free or type-3 ELM's, but some lasted a reasonable length of time. Shots 14,18,24 are examples. H-modes were obtained at target densities of 0.8,1.0 and 1.2e20 (programmed and achieved). 3) The RF_loading circuit was producing an output when E-port was operating, but it is not clear it was doing the right thing. It does not appear to be hooked up to the AFOL; there was no signal on Hybrid INPUT_81. 4) The H/(H+D) ratio did seem to be down. Weaver reported less than 5% except on the midplane view which was about 10%, and it seemed to drop during the day. Rejean got good data on shot 35 and reported 6%. The boronization may have done the job. We did not attempt between-shot ECDC. 5) Startup was terrible again today. All the fizzles were moving back inside. The problem seems to be less that B-z is coming in too fast than that the current rise was too slow, or non-existent. The modified startup produced one plasma, shot 5, (out of 12 attempts) but after that further tweaks to try to increase the voltage and reduce Bz were unsuccessful. I finally gave up after shot 13 and reloaded seg1 from 970620037, which had been the starting point. Since that worked, I didn't go back, although I still think I was going in the right direction to begin with. The fizzles (and the success) in shots 2-13 had early H-alpha, with spikes, indicating poor burn-out. This may have been a boronization effect. The Z-meter burned out very fast, and the CII was extremely low all day. Later shots, such as 17, had similar early H-alpha traces. I got breakdowns all the way down to 10msec pre-puff width; this definitely is lower pressure than previously possible. One important effect I found and remedied (shot 34 and thereafter) is that the C-integrator in SEG 1 was causing a significant imbalance in the demand to the EF1 coils after t=0. This was eliminated by turning the integrator gate off at t=0, so that the integral error accumulated in the ramp-up is reset. ****************************************************************************** ***IT IS IMPORTANT TO SET THE INTEGRATOR GATE (NOT JUST THE GAINS) TO ZERO.*** ****************************************************************************** This was undoubtedly one source of irreproducibility in the fields, although not the only one. It may also be the reason the startup seemed to prefer imbalanced EF2's. The signs of the imbalances seem to be opposite. My recommendation is to start (segment 1) from shot 970624005, and set the integrator gate to zero at t=0. Certainly the Friday startup was not at all robust, and symmetrized EF2's would seem to be a good idea. In any case, the integrator gate should be zeroed (reset). 6) The jbot valve was exercised, but still seems to have very poor response. A 125 msec pulse was needed to get a noticeable injection with 4psi of N2. The bolo signals are coming in to the hybrid on channels 85 and 86. [The zmeter signal is also now working, on channel 83]. 7) The pellet injector is working. Pellets were injected on shots 31,36,and 38 (2 pellets/shot at 1.15 and 1.4sec). It is necessary to allow substantial pump-out time to prevent a pressure burst when the PI gate valve is opened. For the later shots Martin moved the open time earlier, allowing the burst to decay somewhat. Rice observed a decrease in rotation at pellet injection. Weaver looked for CER in Boron emission from the pellet, but didn't see any. Problems --------- Power systems ran well today, with no faults or crowbars. There were two shots lost to magnet resistance faults. The TF thermocouple scanner still has problems, but Willy thinks they are solvable. According to him, there were some good readings among the bad; he suspects some incorrect connections. Partial flux loop F13 failed on shot 22 and fixed itself during shot 23. The outer gap may have been forced to a small value on 23 by the spurious signal on F13; the shot disrupted early. Scorecard: ---------- Tests 1 Duds 2 (mag resistance fault) fizzles 25 ! plasmas 12 ------- -- shots 40 There were also three gas calibration tests for BLIP after the conclusion of the run. |

| Jun 24 1997 12:47:19:460PM | 970624021 | Steve Wolfe | shot 21: Copy EF2L into EF2U still trying to increase nl4 to 1.2e20 Magnet resistance fault. I noticed an imbalance in the EF1 currents on shot 20, seems to be ZCUR2 controller Note that the EF2's are in BR_0 |
| Jun 24 1997 12:55:31:520PM | 970624022 | Steve Wolfe | shot 22: Repeat of 21: Copy EF2L into EF2U still trying to increase nl4 to 1.2e20 fizzle. Magnetics errors on F13 and F14, BP14BC early breakdown, h-alpha hangs up till 15msec, rcur turns around at 15msec |
| Jun 24 1997 12:56:39:770PM | 970624022 | Steve Wolfe | shot 22: Repeat of 21: Copy EF2L into EF2U still trying to increase nl4 to 1.2e20 fizzle. Magnetics errors on F13 and F14, BP14BC early breakdown, h-alpha hangs up till 15msec, rcur turns around at 15msec |
| Jun 24 1997 01:23:16:560PM | 970624023 | Steve Wolfe | shot 23: import seg1 from shot 18 still trying to increase nl4 to 1.2e20 plasma - disruption at .71sec errors on F13 and BP26_BC; outer gap is down to 4mm, may be due to bad f13 signal? F13 "fixed itself at commutation" according to Bob. BP26 looks ok, does have a small offset; doesn't matter, it's not used for anything. EFIT has big chisq on F13 or maybe 14? startup is terrible; current actually turns around, then comes back up. I don't know why it disrupted; maybe an injection. RF has a problem too: apparently the arc detector isn't shutting off one transmitter. |
| Jun 24 1997 01:33:47:450PM | 970624024 | Steve Wolfe | shot 24: repeat, after RF makes a change in power room. plasma - so much for disruption recovery! Two h-modes, FMIT 2 is tripping out through the shot. F13 is ok on this shot. Long hesitation in current rise, pnly moves out to .63 meter; this one barely made it, but I'm surprised it went at all. |
| Jun 24 1997 02:00:03:890PM | 970624025 | Steve Wolfe | shot 25: Move Ar pulse to .5sec Put N2 pulse at .8 sec, for 60msec (PG2=Jbot) Mike will remove the demodulator on FMIT2, and try to fix it outside. Meanwhile we will run with D-port. fizzle. turns at 17msec Just try again. |
| Jun 24 1997 02:07:35:980PM | 970624026 | Steve Wolfe | shot 26: No change Move Ar pulse to .5sec Put N2 pulse at .8 sec, for 60msec (PG2=Jbot) plasma bd before 5msec; still hesitating, not as bad this time; gets out to .65 at 30msec RF faulting continuously, peaks around 1.2MW, no H-modes |
| Jun 24 1997 02:26:09:630PM | 970624027 | Steve Wolfe | shot 27: INcrease jbot pulse to 80msec, 100V (from 90). [g] will fire pellet into target this shot (plasma or not). fizzle; this one barely makes it off the wall, max RCUR=.55 |
| Jun 24 1997 02:32:14:400PM | 970624028 | Steve Wolfe | shot 28: No change INcrease jbot pulse to 80msec, 100V (from 90). plasma. 4 ELM-free h-modes I'm looking at an imbalance in the EF1's. I don't see where it is coming from, since ZCUR is not supposed to come on until .034 sec |
| Jun 24 1997 02:46:09:340PM | 970624029 | Steve Wolfe | shot 29: pellet set for 1.15 sec jbot to 100msec fizzle. late breakdown (10msec) |
| Jun 24 1997 02:57:27:380PM | 970624030 | Steve Wolfe | shot 30: BR from .007 to .0065 fizzle. bd back at 5msec, rcur turns around at 13msec |
| Jun 24 1997 03:05:25:410PM | 970624031 | Steve Wolfe | shot 31: no changes, still waiting for a pellet and 100msec on Jbot plasma - disrupts at 1.47, pellets at 1.15 and 1.4 lots of little h-modes. D-port is faulting like mad. startup looks better, little hesitation. |
| Jun 24 1997 03:23:03:360PM | 970624032 | Steve Wolfe | shot 32: no changes. Mike re-installing demodulator fizzle. looks like inner wall again. I still can't find the ef1l imbalance The Vouts are identical |
| Jun 24 1997 03:35:22:080PM | 970624033 | Steve Wolfe | shot 33: Ar back to .3sec, set pg4 to pulse full on from .7 to 1.0sec, no feedback fizzle. bd at 6.5msec |
| Jun 24 1997 03:51:13:400PM | 970624034 | Steve Wolfe | shot 34: turn off integrator C at 0.sec in seg 1; see if this is responsible for EF1 imbalance Ar back to .3sec, set pg4 to pulse full on from .7 to 1.0sec, no feedback fizzle:very late breakdown (12msec) Ratiomatic pressure looks very high? Big pressure burst at -1.6sec? Is it Martin's gate valve? EF1 demands now equal; must have been the integrator! |
| Jun 24 1997 04:32:47:760PM | 970624035 | Steve Wolfe | shot 35: repeat with PI gate valve closed. Ar back to .3sec, set pg4 to pulse full on from .7 to 1.0sec, no feedback plasma: no pressure burst. breakdown at 5msec still hesitates, EF1 demands match until 35msec when ZCUR feedback comes on. Rejean reports 6% H/(H+D) |
| Jun 24 1997 04:13:34:610PM | 970624036 | Steve Wolfe | shot 36: repeat with PI gate valve open, but wait for G to start a pump cycle. D-port only, There is a major problem with E-port transmitter. J-bot seemed to be opening on previous couple of shots. base=1.4e-6, result: plasma to 1.56 sec, rf got 400kW. pellets pressure burst at -1.6sec gives 3e-6 gage |
| Jun 24 1997 04:26:23:910PM | 970624037 | Steve Wolfe | shot 37: no changes Joe moves fast window to catch snake; longer pump-out this time. fizzle; stil can't do 3 in a row! later bd, 6.3sec, rcur turns around at 10msec! |
| Jun 24 1997 04:38:27:440PM | 970624038 | Steve Wolfe | shot 38: jbot pulse from 100->125msec G is moving his valve opening earlier. plasma. H-modes, got pellet, RF faulting during h-mode less hesitation |
| Jun 24 1997 04:52:42:140PM | 970624039 | Steve Wolfe | shot 39: jbot pulse to 75msec, increase pressure in Jbot to 8psi. continue pellets for benefit of JR, who sees a change in rotation. fizzle. bd ok, turns in at 13.5 msec |
| Jun 24 1997 05:04:45:340PM | 970624040 | Steve Wolfe | shot 40: no change jbot pulse to 75msec, increase pressure in Jbot to 8psi. continue pellets for benefit of JR, who sees a change in rotation. fizzle. |
| Jun 24 1997 05:16:13:250PM | 970624041 | Steve Wolfe | shot 41: gas test only (for BLIP et al.) B-side lower standard pulse. All other valves disabled. fizzle detector start to 1.08 sec |
| Jun 24 1997 05:20:10:330PM | 970624042 | Steve Wolfe | shot 42: gas test only (for BLIP et al.) 200msec pulse from B-side lower .301-.501 pressure rise to 8e-5 on ITG |
