MP 170A Start-up and 148 RF Conditioning

The object of this run is to get routine plasma operation and check out
diagnostics while getting the RF conditioned. Good progress was made toward
these goals.

Plasmas were reasonably reproducible (13 plasmas, 8 fizzles, 2 power supply
related duds, and 8 tests; most fizzles before we got rid of the early radial
field thrash). It was necessary to change the Br offset and EF4 current
significantly from last week's values, more in line with previous (June)
settings. We discovered that the radial field thrash previously observed just
after breakdown was due to voltage programming on oh2 and ef2 supplies that
was not up-down symmetric. This was fixed on shot 17. E-port antenna was
conditioned up to 1.7 MW at end of a ramp, and run at 1.3MW flattop, resulting
in elmy h-modes. GPC was checked out and a setup error on channels 7-9 found
and fixed. The rf loading feedback circuit was checked out; the circuit
appears to be operating correctly, but the one attempt to use it (shot 31)
failed because its bias and/or gate were not set up correctly.

There were several problems during today's run:
-------------------------------------------------
The k-side duty-cycle valve driver failed, resulting in a runaway shot and
hard disruption on shot #7, the first plasma shot of the day. The driver was
replaced by a direct driver for several shots, then a repaired duty factor
board at shot 21 (test shot). Also, the b-side upper driver (Ar valve) failed
while the k-side board was being worked on after shot 7. The HV board for this
valve was also replaced before shot 22.

TCI alignment went out before or during shot 7, which would have caused a
different problem with density feedback had the gas valve not also failed. We
left density feedback off until Irby was convinced that the alignment had
stabilized (shot 18).

The shot 7 disruption caused a tf crowbar and blown fuses in the TF and
EF4. The first crowbar was on OH2U.

There were two power supply failures, resulting in duds, on shot 4 (no OH1)
and shot 16 (no TF). The first was probably the result of backing out of the
shot after INIT, as has been found previously, but the shot 16 problem was
unexplained.

The most potentially serious problem was the appearance of spikes or glitches
on the hybrid outputs (Mout) observed on shots 20-23 (and perhaps earlier). On
shot 23 in particular, the spikes were full scale (10V) and may have caused
the chopper to do the wrong thing, leading to a disruption. The glitches seem
to originate in the PID stage, with smaller, less frequent glitches showing up
on the Aout (error signals) and even on a few inputs. The glitches seem to
start at the time that Ip referenced feedback gains turn on, or perhaps
derivative gains, around t=0, with no glitches earlier. The glitches did not
re-appear on hybrid-only test shots after shot 23, or on test or full shots
from 24-31. This could be an indication of an intermittant problem on the PID
stage or a power supply problem. It was not possible to diagnose the problem
further because it disappeared after shot 23.

Details:
---------
We started with a copy of 971030015, but with density feedback enabled and
clearin set to -8mm instead of -5mm, to avoid the vertical instability we got
on 971030016.

Shots 1-2 were no power cycles to check the operation of the Ross relays
Shot 3 was the Tuesday oh test
shot 4 was a dud (no OH1)
shot 5-6 were fizzles; adjusted Br and Bz
shot 7: plasma; disrupted at 1.2 sec. NO PG3 gas; the duty cycle driver died;
also the density feedback was screwed because the TCI alignment went out.
There was a current hesitation early. RF got 1.5kW in.
shot 8-10: gas tests. Replaced duty cycle board with direct driver, while
Willy fixes the chopper board.
shot 11: plasma, full length; density feedback disabled until we confirm TCI
alignment. Still a long hesitation. RF got 15kW in. Now the B-side
lower valve (Ar) is dead
shot 12: no changes:fizzle.
shot 13: Adjust br, ef4. fizzle.
shot 14-15: tweak br,bz. fizzles.
shot 16: Notice and fix non-symmetric programing on oh2 and ef2 voltages in
seg 1. Dud - no tf
shot 17: plasma, got rid of br thrash.
shot 18: density feedback back on. plasma, rf=.3MW
shot 19: repeat. rf to 350kW from E-port. Dport is getting a fault indication
shot 20: repeat, fizzled. There are some glitches on the Mout signals betweem
t=0 and .15 sec
shot 21: replace duty-cycle board on k-side and HV board on B-side lower.
gas pulse test. Still see some glitches on MOUT channels
shot 22: plasma, Argon working, RF=.6MW
shot 23: disruption at .6 sec; lots of +/- 10V glitches on hybrid Mouts. May
have caused disruption by driving chopper? Take some test shots to try
to trace where glitches come from, but they go away on their own!
shot 24: gas pulse and TS laser only; no glitches
shot 25: oh plc test; no glitches
shot 26: full shot. Plasma, no glitches from hybrid. rf>1MW, dithering h-mode.
shot 27: plasma, rf up to 1.7MW
shot 28: repeat, setting up rf feedback signal
shot 29-30: good plasmas with elmy h-modes. RF flattop around 1.4MW
shot 31: try turning on rf loading feedback, but it causes a disruption at
t=.87sec

Physics operator summary for run 971104

MP 170A: Re-start C-Mod
MP 148 : 80 MHz RF conditioning

SL: Wolfe
PO: Granetz
EO: Cochran/Bertolino

Summary: Considering this was only our second plasma run of this campaign,
things went very well. The E-port ICRF system has essentially been
conditioned, having launched up to 1.6 MW into the plasma, which was
enough to give some very ELMy H-modes. The D-port system was not
working today. Also, the RF position feedback control needs some
more fiddling, although the circuit was working.

We had 13 plasmas, with most extending well into rampdown. Several
problems with gas valve driver boards were found, and fixed. A
mysterious problem with noise spikes on the hybrid computer outputs
was seen on several shots (21, 22, 23), but went away on its own.
This should probably be monitored during the next few runs; it may be
an early indication of a power supply going bad. We also found that
symmetrizing the OH2 and EF2 pre-programmed voltages (done just prior
to shot 17) does wonders for balancing out the stray Br field during
breakdown and early rampup.

WARNING: the last shot used the RF position feedback signal in the
hybrid RCUR estimator. This seemed to cause some problems, so be
careful if you plan on using the PCS programming from this shot.
DO NOT COPY the PCS from any shot before 017, since the OH2 and EF2
voltages were not yet symmetrized.

Scorecard: 13 plasmas
7 fizzles
2 duds (both due to a power supply failing to turn on)

Run Plan for Tuesday, 971104

MP 170A -- Restart plasma operation, and begin conditioning 80 MHz ICRF

Engineering setup for Tuesday, 04 Nov 1997:

Two hours of ECDC in deuterium before the run, if possible.

Engineering setup as on 971030015, with TF under hybrid control
Plasma current to be set for 0.8 MA
Segment 1 startup will be copied from 971030015
Density to be set for nl_04=1.0e20 m-2, if TCI is available, else use
the pre-programmed gas valve trace from the setup shot.

Gas setup - fill K-side with 20 PSI of D2, hybrid enable
fill B-top with 6 PSI of D2, hybrid enable
fill B-side-lower with 4 PSI of Ar, hybrid enable

The following gate valves should be enabled, assuming no vacuum problems:

ECE (no others until we verify the status of each system)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Detailed shot log:

Note: this is the first run after last week's boronization.
Note: about 1.5 hours of ECDC was done prior to this run.
Hybrid coldstart done; no errors found
($set default cmod$models:[hybrid.tcl]
$@hybinit_dispatch
$@show_bitbus_log
Use editor to search for no "error" and no "not respond")
Reload plasma shot from last Thursday (971030015), which
has Ip=0.8 MA and Bt=5.3 T.
Turn nl_04 feedback back on. Gain is set at 4, starting at 0.082 s.
Move CLEARIN in by 3 mm (change from -5 to -8 mm) to improve
vertical stability (since the setup shot had a VDE disruption).

Shot 01 -- Test of Ross relays

Shot 02 -- Another test of Ross relays.

Shot 03 -- Usual OH-only test shot. Looks okay.

Next shot: try for plasma.

Shot 04 -- Dud. No OH1.

Shot 05 -- Fizzle. Very bad Br.

Next shot: increase BR offset from 0.003 to 0.006 T

Shot 06 -- Fizzle. Bz too negative, Br better, but not all the way there yet.

Next shot: increase EF4 by +50 amps, increase BR offset to 0.007 mT

Shot 07 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.3 s, perhaps because the density feedback
signal failed. The nl_04 signal claims only 0.5e20 m-2, but Jim
says that is too low. There was a growing Z oscillation leading
to the VDE. TF crowbarred. Steve reports that the K-side valve
(which is our main fueling valve) didn't fire, even though the
hybrid was putting out full voltage.

Next shot: turn off density feedback.

Shot 08 -- Test of new K-side valve driver board. (Willy has just
replaced/worked on the board.) Valve didn't open.

Shot 09 -- Another test of K-side valve driver board, but this time using the
old direct analog signal (not the chopper signal). This one worked.

Shot 10 -- Another test of K-side valve driver board, this time using the
chopper signal. No gas.

Next shot: run the gas valve with the direct analog signal (i.e.
with the bypass in). Willy is debugging the duty cycle board
offline.

About 1 hr 40 min have elapsed between the last plasma shot (007) and the start
of the next plasma shot (011).

Shot 11 -- Plasma, nice shot. Duration=1.67 s. NL_04=0.8-1.0e20 m-2.
John Rice reports no argon. He's right, B-side-lower didn't open,
even though the proper pulse came out of the hybrid. Teeny weeny
amounts of RF (like 15 kW).

Next shot: no changes.

Shot 12 -- Fizzle. Not was not all that bad.

Next shot: reduce BR offset by 1 mT (to 0.006 mT) and raise EF4
current by 15 amps (to -1350 A).

Shot 13 -- Fizzle. Pretty good null.

Next shot: raise BR offset back to 0.007 mT

Shot 14 -- Fizzle. Very good null.

Next shot: no changes.

Shot 15 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: symmetrize the OH2U and L voltage programming. Copy
upper to lower.

Shot 16 -- Dud. No TF.

Next shot; symmetrize the EF2U and L voltage programming as well.
Copy upper to lower.

Shot 17 -- Plasma, good shot. Duration=1.68 s. NL_04=0.9-1.0e20 m-2.
Prf=50 kW.

Next shot: turn density feedback back on, with a gain of 4.

Shot 18 -- Plasma, good shot. Duration=1.68 s. Density feedback worked well.
NL_04=1.0e20 m-2. Prf=0.3 MW.

Next shot: no changes.

Shot 19 -- Plasma, good shot. Duration=1.68 s. Prf=0.35 MW.

Next shot: no changes.

Shot 20 -- Fizzle. Null looks good.

Next shot: increase EF4 by +15 amps (from -1350 to -1335 amps)

There's a break here for cell access for Willy to put back the repaired
chopping valve driver board. He'll also look at the problems with the argon
valve. Amanda is going into the ECE lab to check on why channels 7,8, and 9
are not working.

Shot 21 -- Test shot to check valves. Main fueling valve is working (K-side).
Don't know about the argon valve.

Shot 22 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.29 s. I_halo_lower=100 kA. Prf=0.6 MW
No H-modes. Lots of argon

Next shot: no changes.

Shot 23 -- Plasma, but disrupted at 0.63 s. I_halo_L=134 kA. EFC was
thrashing alot for the entire shot. Lots of noise spikes coming
out of hybrid (this has been getting worse for at least the last
few shots). There were many camac DAQ errors on this shot as well.

Shot 24 -- Test shot to check hybrid noise spikes. No power supplies enabled.
No spikes.

Shot 25 -- OH-only test shot, again to check the hybrid.
No spikes.

Next shot: try for plasma again.

Shot 26 -- Plasma. Ramps halfway down before it disrupts at t=1.45 s.
Prf=1.2 MW. No H-modes. No spikes on hybrid.

Next shot: no changes.

Shot 27 -- Plasma. Ramps halfway down before it disrupts at t=1.46 s.
Prf=1.7 MW. Hints of things happening on the H-alpha, density, etc.
Magnetics Traq-2 data was corrupted.

Next shot: no changes.

Shot 28 -- Plasma. Ramps halfway down before it disrupts at t=1.43 s.
Prf=1.6 MW. More hints of things happening on the H-alpha,
density, etc.

Next shot: no changes, except set up fast sampling windows from
t=0.930 to 1.077 s.

Shot 29 -- Plasma. Ramps halfway down before it disrupts at t=1.44 s.
Prf=1.3 MW for 0.3 s. Very ELMy.

Next shot: no PCS changes, but RF position feedback signal is
enabled to the hybrid. The hybrid will not use it though.

Shot 30 -- Plasma. Ramps halfway down before it disrupts at t=1.46 s.
Prf=1.3-1.6 MW for 0.3 s. Very ELMy.

Next shot: Turn on hybrid usage of the RF position feedback signal.

Shot 31 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 0.86 s, perhaps due to the RF position
feedback control signal. I_halo_L=126 kA.

End of run.

plasma - similar to 29.

EFIT had stalled because of low disk space on cmod$models /user=cmod$mhd.
DId a purge on efit_work, and ran shot 28 and 29 manually.
Nov 4 1997 05:05:55:280PM971104031Steve Wolfeshot 31: set up RCUR rf_load for gain=-1500. Wukitch says it's ready.
Disruption at .87 sec; it was the RCUR feedback.
The sudden jump in RCUR error when the feedback comes on apparently drives the derivative
gain crazy.

(which is our main fueling valve) didn't fire, even though the
hybrid was putting out full voltage.

Next shot: turn off density feedback.
Nov 4 1997 11:16:33:610AM971104008Robert GranetzShot 08 -- Test of new K-side valve driver board. (Willy has just
replaced/worked on the board.) Valve didn't open.
Nov 4 1997 11:32:24:170AM971104009Robert GranetzShot 09 -- Another test of K-side valve driver board, but this time using the
old direct analog signal (not the chopper signal). This one worked.
Nov 4 1997 11:49:47:100AM971104010Robert GranetzShot 10 -- Another test of K-side valve driver board, this time using the
chopper signal. No gas.

Next shot: run the gas valve with the direct analog signal (i.e.
with the bypass in). Willy is debugging the duty cycle board
offline.
Nov 4 1997 12:11:36:760PM971104011Robert GranetzShot 11 -- Plasma, nice shot. Duration=1.67 s. NL_04=0.8-1.0e20 m-2.
John Rice reports no argon. He's right, B-side-lower didn't open,
even though the proper pulse came out of the hybrid. Teeny weeny
amounts of RF (like 15 kW).

Next shot: no changes.
Nov 4 1997 12:19:08:970PM971104012Robert GranetzShot 12 -- Fizzle. Not was not all that bad.

Next shot: reduce BR offset by 1 mT (to 0.006 mT) and raise EF4
current by 15 amps (to -1350 A).
Nov 4 1997 12:42:31:670PM971104013Robert GranetzShot 13 -- Fizzle. Pretty good null.

Next shot: raise BR offset back to 0.007 mT
Nov 4 1997 12:53:30:270PM971104014Robert GranetzShot 14 -- Fizzle. Very good null.

Next shot: no changes.
Nov 4 1997 01:05:22:110PM971104015Robert GranetzShot 15 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: symmetrize the OH2U and L voltage programming. Copy
upper to lower.
Nov 4 1997 01:11:36:730PM971104016Robert GranetzShot 16 -- Dud. No TF.

Next shot; symmetrize the EF2U and L voltage programming as well.
Copy upper to lower.
Nov 4 1997 01:20:59:490PM971104017Robert GranetzShot 17 -- Plasma, good shot. Duration=1.68 s. NL_04=0.9-1.0e20 m-2.
Prf=50 kW.

Next shot: turn density feedback back on, with a gain of 4.
Nov 4 1997 01:31:08:580PM971104018Robert Granetz
Shot 18 -- Plasma, good shot. Duration=1.68 s. Density feedback worked well.
NL_04=1.0e20 m-2. Prf=0.3 MW.

Next shot: no changes.
Nov 4 1997 01:44:47:300PM971104019Robert Granetz
Shot 19 -- Plasma, good shot. Duration=1.68 s. Prf=0.35 MW.

Next shot: no changes.
Nov 4 1997 01:59:47:530PM971104020Robert GranetzShot 20 -- Fizzle. Null looks good.

Next shot: increase EF4 by +15 amps (from -1350 to -1335 amps)
Nov 4 1997 02:33:33:670PM971104021Robert GranetzShot 21 -- Test shot to check valves. Main fueling valve is working (K-side).
Don't know about the argon valve.
Nov 4 1997 02:52:35:420PM971104022Robert Granetz
Shot 22 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 1.29 s. I_halo_lower=100 kA. Prf=0.6 MW
No H-modes. Lots of argon

Next shot: no changes.
Nov 4 1997 03:35:32:890PM971104023Robert GranetzShot 23 -- Plasma, but disrupted at 0.63 s. I_halo_L=134 kA. EFC was
thrashing alot for the entire shot. Lots of noise spikes coming
out of hybrid (this has been getting worse for at least the last
few shots). There were many camac DAQ errors on this shot as well.
Nov 4 1997 03:35:47:400PM971104024Robert Granetz
Shot 24 -- Test shot to check hybrid noise spikes. No power supplies enabled.
No spikes.
Nov 4 1997 03:41:57:600PM971104025Robert GranetzShot 25 -- OH-only test shot, again to check the hybrid.
No spikes.

Next shot: try for plasma again.
Nov 4 1997 03:56:38:650PM971104026Robert GranetzShot 26 -- Plasma. Ramps halfway down before it disrupts at t=1.45 s.
Prf=1.2 MW. No H-modes. No spikes on hybrid.

Next shot: no changes.
Nov 4 1997 04:07:49:540PM971104027Robert GranetzShot 27 -- Plasma. Ramps halfway down before it disrupts at t=1.46 s.
Prf=1.7 MW. Hints of things happening on the H-alpha, density, etc.
Magnetics Traq-2 data was corrupted.

Next shot: no changes.
Nov 4 1997 04:17:34:020PM971104028Robert GranetzShot 28 -- Plasma. Ramps halfway down before it disrupts at t=1.43 s.
Prf=1.6 MW. More hints of things happening on the H-alpha,
density, etc.

Next shot: no changes, except set up fast sampling windows from
t=0.930 to 1.077 s.
Nov 4 1997 04:53:20:760PM971104029Robert GranetzShot 29 -- Plasma. Ramps halfway down before it disrupts at t=1.44 s.
Prf=1.3 MW for 0.3 s. Very ELMy.

Next shot: no PCS changes, but RF position feedback signals is
enabled to the hybrid. The hybrid will not use it though.
Nov 4 1997 04:52:26:090PM971104030Robert GranetzShot 30 -- Plasma. Ramps halfway down before it disrupts at t=1.46 s.
Prf=1.3-1.6 MW for 0.3 s. Very ELMy.

Next shot: Turn on hybrid usage of the RF position feedback signal.
Nov 4 1997 05:05:14:020PM971104031Robert GranetzShot 31 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 0.86 s, perhaps due to the RF position
feedback control signal. I_halo_L=126 kA.
