| Physics Operator Summary for 971208 MP#170A Startup MP#148 RF conditioning SL: Granetz, Wukitch PO: wolfe EO: silva, bertolino, cochrane Run Plan: -------- Part 0: Run power supply and alternator tests as required by engineering. At minimum, the TF supply should be exercised under PLC control to verify operation of the new cabinet#1 circuits. Verify that hybrid programming signals are appearing at all supply cabinets and gas valves. It should not be necessary to carry out hybrid tests on individual power supplies prior to integrated test (i.e. plasma attempt). Part 1: MP 170A (Establish plasma operation). The goal will be to get plasmas and verify operation of diagnostics. During this phase, RF may be pulsed if desired. We will start with a segment 1 from 971104030 and segment 2 from 971105027 (800kA, outer gap ~1cm). Note that this shot has RF_LOAD feedback on, so have to verify the RF gate is off. Tweak and twiddle to get breakdown, verify shape. RF can fire if it wants to. If/when we aren't having disruptivity problems, increase current to 1MA, for instance using segment 2 from 960116027. Tweak gap and x-point location to taste. Use this as RF conditioning target. Part 2: MP148A (RF conditioning) Bang away till the RF gets to acceptable power levels, staying on, with both transmitters running together. Hopefully, this will provide good quality H-modes, perhaps EDA (like the basis shot 960116027). Continue running shots as required for RF and diagnostic alignment, checkout. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Engineering setup for 971208 (after engineering "part 0"): Two hours of ECDC in deuterium before the run, if possible. Engineering setup as on 971105027, with TF under hybrid control Gas setup - fill K-side with 20 PSI of D2, hybrid enable fill B-top with 6 PSI of D2, hybrid enable fill B-side-lower with 3 PSI of Ar, hybrid enable The following gate valves should be enabled, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE (no others until we verify the status of each system) Results: ------- The plan was largely accomplished, after several delays in getting started. Plasma current was successfully increased to 1MA and the RF power was brought up to 3.9MW (!) although it was not possible to maintain the RF pulse constant at high power levels without faults. Nevertheless, a good start was made on the RF conditioning and tuning. H-modes were readily obtained, with some indication of EDA while the RF stayed on on some shots. All shots were run with RF_load feedback turned on, at a gain of -1500. Plasma startup was quite reliable, with only one fizzle. The sparker was run all day, but the improvement over November may be due to the removal of the saturating input_58 to the hybrid following the 971105 run, as described elsewhere. All plasmas ran well into ramp-down. Details: ---------- We had originally planned to begin operation at 10AM, but problems with getting the alternator started on turning gear delayed the first shot to 11:30. Shot 1 was programmed as a 50KA TF pulse under PLC control; it failed with a low PT indication, for unknown reasons. Shot 2 was just a repeat and ran nominally. Shots #3 and #4 were TF pulses at 100ka and 150kA respectively; both ran correctly, with no alternator or other difficulties. In the course of these shots we verified that all the hybrid signals were appearing properly at the power supplies. Shot 5 was a standard "Tuesday" oh coax resistance test, with the addition of testing the pulse gas for K-side and B-top under hybrid control; these tests all succeeded. This completed part 0, the engineering tests. Shot 6 was the first plasma attempt. On the first attempt, an oil overtemperature fault appeared during INIT, and we ended up backing out of the shot (INIT->RECOOL). After a delay during which the overtemp fault was dealt with, shot 6 was run through, but several supplies (OH1,EF1's, TF) did not fire. We have experienced this effect before, i.e. when we back out of a shot something is not properly reset and the subsequent attempt at the same shot is missing one or more supplies. It would be nice to figure out why. Before we could take shot 7, it was noticed at the alternator that the explosive fuses had not been reconnected after the last round of alternator tests. At first it was thought that it would be necessary to cancel the run and bring the alternator back down to turning gear in order to reconnect these fuses, but it turned out to be possible to remedy the situation without bringing the alternator down. The turnaround ended up taking about an hour. Shot 7 was another plasma attempt, but the air switch opened due to an incorrectly set air valve, resulting in no 13.8 supplies firing. Finally on shot 8 all supplies fired properly, and we got a full length plasma (1.6+ sec), complete with small rf pulses from both antennas. After that, we were off and running. Shot 9: enabled the Ar pulse for Hirex, and JR also turned on the shit shooter (1.3sec) to look at C injection using the U.Texas slide. RF power increased on both transmitters. A small injection was observed on the 2pi at the time of the laser blow-off. Shot 10: Moved the segment 1 PG3 gas puff earlier (from 33msec to 28msec) to get rid of hards observed on #8,9. Increased Ar pulse and moved C pulse to 1.0sec. Plasma shortened to 1.46 sec (Ar effect) but RF got up to 3MW in a ramp-up pulse. Good H-mode late in pulse. Irby, et al. report that the TTCI is working. Hards eliminated. The TCI is showing a lot of hash on the analysed signal, but the feedback input is fine. Shot 11-12: repeat for RF; JR moving laser blow-off pulse. On shot 12 moved Ar puff to .6sec for Goetz. RF still faulting at 3MW level, lots of h-modes. Shot 13: Increase current to 1MA. I started to do this by loading 960116027, but noted that this would require recalculating predictors to account for change of BP12 input signal, so I just drew the Ip trace to 1MA. Note that there may still be some differences in the equilibrium from the high-performance shots. The plasma ran fine (to 1.56sec) and the RF reached 3.9MW! Wplasm got to 156kJ and rising at about .5MW when the RF faulted. Shot 14: was a repeat that fizzled. All I could see was that there might have been a slight increase in Br over the previous n shots, so I reduced the Br offset from 7mT to 6.5mT. Shot 15-18: were good 1MA shots with H-modes. The RF was still not staying on at the high power level, but reasonable h-mode durations were obtained. Problems: -------- Once we got started, all systems performed quite reliably. We had 11 shots (10 full length) in less than 2.5 hours, so cooling was not a major issue. We again experienced the back-out problem, with several supplies not firing after an INIT->RECOOL->INIT->CHECK->PULSE sequence. Also, the TCI interferometer analyzed outputs had a lot of noise/hash; after the run, Jim determined that this was due to a problem in one of the HeNE fringe counter/digitizer channels. Bob Granetz was running his automatic x-ray pedestal calculation on Barolo batch queue, and later in the day it backed up and began delaying EFIT and other jobs; for the last shot he changed it to another queue. Note: There are new regulator circuits in TF Cabinet 1. On the "150KA" TF test Vinnie noted that the usual PLC setting (156) only gave 5.2T, implying a change in the offset. However, the hybrid programming (150000.) gave 5.4T, perhaps a couple kA more than previously. Scorecard: --------- Tests: 5 Duds: 2 (power supply non-fires) Fizzles: 1 Plasmas:10 ======= == Total 18 |

| Dec 8 1997 11:33:33:110AM | 971208001 | Steve Wolfe | shot 1: 50kA TF under PLC control Breakers pulled. no current. |
| Dec 8 1997 11:55:39:170AM | 971208002 | Steve Wolfe | shot 2: try again: 50kA TF under PLC control. Shot 1 had a low pt voltage indication. This time it worked. |
| Dec 8 1997 12:09:01:050PM | 971208002 | Steve Wolfe | shot 2: try again: 50kA TF under PLC control. Shot 1 had a low pt voltage indication. This time it worked. I'm seeing a .04 to .01V signal on the RF load signal I'm also seeing a -.1V offset on BP21_bc |
| Dec 8 1997 12:10:29:870PM | 971208004 | Steve Wolfe | shot 3: 100kA TF test. ok Bp21_BC signal is similar to 971105027. Offset is ok on magnetics signal, so it may be an isoamp problem |
| Dec 8 1997 12:15:02:580PM | 971208004 | Steve Wolfe | shot 4: 150kA TF test. ok. On shot 3, Vinnie set up to look at hybrid inputs to the EF and oh supplies. They look ok. |
| Dec 8 1997 12:28:04:020PM | 971208005 | Steve Wolfe | shot 5: Tuesday oh test. Also enable K-side and B-top to check gas. 10kA oh shot ok Got gas, got outputs from both valves. Note: on shot 4 we got a gasburst at .72sec to 1.e-6. Can't see it on this one for the real gas. |
| Dec 8 1997 01:07:06:960PM | 971208006 | Steve Wolfe | shot 6: Go for plasma. Alternator fault indication during INIT. Oil temperature fault. Back out of INIT->RECOOL Try again- No OH1,EF1, TF. |
| Dec 8 1997 01:28:36:210PM | 971208006 | Steve Wolfe | Before shot 7, it was noticed at the alternator that the explosive fuses were never reconnected. It is not considered safe to operate without them. It may be necessary to run the alternator all the way down in order to reconnect them safely. |
| Dec 8 1997 02:10:48:450PM | 971208007 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 7: Try for plasma again, after resetting everything. The run had been cancelled, but then re-started. Explosive fuses have been reconnected. Still not asking for the Argon pulse. Air switch opened. Only EF2's and EFC fired. |
| Dec 8 1997 02:27:27:830PM | 971208008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 8: Try for plasma Plasma to 1.64 sec. Two bursts of vertical instability at.22 and 1.1sec RF ran, .15MW. Lots of Moly injections. Looks like some hards. bd at 5.6msec, some hesitation. |
| Dec 8 1997 02:39:07:060PM | 971208009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 9: Repeat. Turn on Argon pulse. Shit Shooter enabled (C) at 1.3sec. plasma to 1.59sec. Late vertical burst gone this time. Still a burst of hards. RF to .3 and .2 Got a small spike on 2pi at 1.3. JR is whining about insufficient Ar. |
| Dec 8 1997 02:58:41:180PM | 971208010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 10: Increase Ar pulse to 28msec Move PG3 pulse 5msec earlier. Let C injection happen at 1.0sec plasma to 1.46 sec H-mode late. RF gets to 3MW gets to 110kJ, still rising. TTCI is working (According to Irby) Small signal on 2pi at C injection again Hards seem better, late signal is neutrons, I think. |
| Dec 8 1997 03:11:22:510PM | 971208011 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 11: repeat for RF. JR may change injection. plasma to 1.5sec. MUltiple H-modes. RF faulting ; Steve says it's because he asked for too much power. |
| Dec 8 1997 03:35:39:650PM | 971208012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 12: Move Ar pulse to 0.6sec for Goetz. Long delay for cooling before this shot. plasma : multiple H-modes. Rf faulting again, after short 3MW pulse. Going to 1MA next shot. |
| Dec 8 1997 03:53:53:980PM | 971208013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 13: Change to 1MA. Started to do it by reloading 960116027, but it would need all the predictors changed, so reload 12 and just draw the Ip to 1MA Move Ar pulse back to .3 sec plasma - 1.56 sec, 1MA. RF to > 3.8MW Record high edge xray signals - RSGranetz 156kJ and rising when the RF faults. |
| Dec 8 1997 04:08:49:150PM | 971208014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 14: repeat. fizzle. Maybe a small br drift? It seems to be swinging negative. |
| Dec 8 1997 04:21:42:100PM | 971208015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 15: Br offset from .007 to .0065 plasma - 1.56 sec multiple h-modes, rf still faulting. |
| Dec 8 1997 04:32:44:510PM | 971208016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 16: repeat, rf still tuning plasma: 1.54sec one long h-mode, modulated by rf faults. only 140kJ and falls through shot. Granetz' xray fitting program is lagging by a shot on barolo batch queue, beginning to back up EFIT job. |
| Dec 8 1997 04:52:11:660PM | 971208017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 17: repeat, rf still tuning plasma to 1.51 sec |
| Dec 8 1997 05:02:26:450PM | 971208018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 18: repeat, rf still tuning ECE fast trigger to .8sec (using fast_control) plasma to 1.56 sec, RF faults a little worse, 2 H-L periods. |
