| run 971210 session leader: Bruce Lipschultz physop: Joe Snipes engineering op: Vinnie Bertolino Mini-proposal 167: Impurity Screening: Divertor Compression and the Role of Core Impurity Confinement We investigated the compression of impurity gases into the divertor region today with the divertor RGA and core impurity diagnostics. We concentrated on obtaining data with ohmic plasmas. We accomplished about 1/2 of the ohmic program due to difficulties obtaining high density long-pulse plasmas. The obtained data with Ar at 3 different densities (nl04 = 1,1.4 & 1.8e20 corr. to nebar approx. 1.6, 2.4 and 3e20). With Kr we covered the lower 2 densities. We cannot report an analysis of the effect of impurity mass on scaling at this time. That will have to await MIST analysis and further calibration of the RGA with Kr. The Kr was successful in that we had good signals on both the divertor RGA and the McPherson spectrometer. The spectrometer was set to view Mg and Na-like Kr (Kr 24+ and 25+) that are at around 500 eV in the plasma. We were not successful in finding an appropriate line for B-like Kr (higher Te). The HIREX system failed to find a bright line for monitoring the Kr. We managed to get detachment with the 1MA plasmas (e.g. shot 15) at nl04=1.6e20. These high density shots invariably disrupted leading to at least one fizzle for the following shot. The details follow: shot #1: shot kind of strange. We got 1 MA but there was a problem with the magnetics and we don't know what the equilibrium was. Also, for some reason the RF was on. shot #2: Magnetics back. Shot flattop to 1.2 seconds. nl04 = 1.4e20. Good Ar data. Next shot lengthen to 1.5 sec current flattop and nl04=1.0e20. shot #3: disruption at 0.55 seconds shot #4: disruption at .47 seconds. shot #5: disruption at 0.82 seconds. Huge MARFE/radiated power (2MW) at around 0.45 seconds which almost kills the plasma. shot #6: finally a full length shot. Ar off this shot for a background. x-point still pretty high. Disruption during rampdown at 1.7 seconds, 700 kA. nl04=1.e20. shot #7: Ar back on and shot lasts till 1.8 seconds as in shot 6. nl04=1.0e20. shot #8: no Ar but disrupted. nl04 ~ 1.3e20. burping probe and shit-shooter (niobium) on this shot. shot #9: good shot, disrupted during rampdown at 1.7 seconds. Another background shot. FSP scan without burping. shit-shooter (niobium) at .65 sec leading to 1.5 MW radiated power! nl04=1.3e20. shot #10: disrupted at 0.45 sec. shot #11: full flattop with Ar. Disrupts at 1.58 seconds. No shit-shooter. nl04=1.5e20. shot #12: power supply problem shot #13: fizzle shot #14: fizzle shot #15: disrupted at 1.33 seconds but got a good background shot. Definite detachment at 1.05 seconds! nl04=1.6e20. shot #16: fizzle shot #17: Ar puffed but disrupted early. Shit-shooter injection at .65 seconds. shot #18: test shot #19: TF problem shot #20: Ar injected but disruption at 1.05 seconds. Starting to detach. nl04 approx. 1.6e20. shot #21: fizzle shot #22: power supply problem shot #23: shot makes it with Ar till 1.35 seconds. In and out of detachment. nl04 approx. 1.8e20. shot #24: fizzle shot #25: fizzle shot #26: background shot. Makes it almost to 1.4 seconds. nl04=1.e20. shot #27: Got Kr in! Shot lasted to inversion (1.55 seconds). Small amount of RF power (1.0 MW) in D/E combination at 0.5-0.7 seconds. nl04=1.e20. shot #28: fizzle shot #29: Kr in for nl04=1.3e20. Shot lasts to 1.55 seconds. John reports an increase of a factor of 4 in Kr levels in the divertor over the lower density. Jim also reports an increase for the core. Perhaps the valve opened for longer rather than a change in compression. shot #30: fizzle shot #31: attempt at calibration of RGA. The puff appears too small for a good calibration. In addition we find that ethylene was puffed as well by accident through the NINJA system. |

| MP 167 Impurity Screening and Divertor Compression Session Leader: Bruce Lipschultz Physics Operator: Joseph Snipes We will be using the divertor RGA and core spectroscopy to determine the compression of impurities into the divertor relative to the core. The shit-shooter will be used to monitor core impurity transport. All of this information can also be used to determine the enrichment of the impurity gas compared to D2. A byproduct of this work is to extend the screening studies we have made previously to krypton. The shots today will be primarily ohmic. If we finish the ohmic agenda we will move on the RF-heated plasmas. During the ohmic shots the RF will NOT be on except for perhaps 100 msec at the beginning of the current flattop. The basic plasma characteristics will be 1 MA and varying density (from shot to shot). 1) Plasma setup and Ar injection We will start up at nl04=1.0 and make sure all the diagnostics (RGA and HIREX) are getting the proper data using Ar as the test gas. Then increase the density to nl04=1.4 and 1.8e20. This should allow us to cross the threshold into detached plasmas and determine the effect of detachment on compression/enrichment. We will also investigate Ne and Kr. The initial setup for valves and pressures will be B-bottom lower - Ar at 4 PSI. Injection time 0.3 sec for 20 msec. J-bottom - Program a 200msec pulse of vacuum at 1.5sec (eventually this will be filled with Ne at 4 PSI. Injection time 0.3 sec for 50 msec). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 971210001 SNIPES PHYSICS_OPERATOR 10-DEC-1997 08:41:45.64 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
