| Run Summary for 971217 - Dimensionless Similarity Experiment MP 161 Session Leader: Greenwald Phys Op: Wolfe Plan: We are trying to create a dimensionless "match" to JET - (similar to the runs on 950407 and 960229 where we matched D3D L-modes.) We will attempt to test both confinement and L/H threshold scaling. To do this, the RF heating will be programmed with a step. The first step is to last 0.15 sec at around 1 MW, the second step should last 0.35 sec at 2.5-3.0 MW. We will scan the power level at both steps. The first step will be scanned to find the L/H threshold. The second will be scanned to maximize the chance of a match with JET. The target density should be around 2 - 2.5 e20 /m^3 The conditions we are looking for were: R = .67 a = .21 kappa = 1.7 delta u ~ .4 delta l ~ .4 Bt = 5.3 Ip = 1.2 (95 ~ 3.!) Pinput = 3.5 - 4.0 MW nebar = 4.0e20 Results: A difficult day. The first two hours were spent returning to conditions from the previous afternoon. A series of fiducials was run - by shot 6 we had obtained H-modes during the 1 MW phase. Success was declared and we moved onto the main program. Good matches to the JET shape were obtained on shot 007. The rest of the program was composed of intermittent good shots, fizzles, and disruptions. We finally went "out" with halo current problems on shot 24. We never got the RF properly tuned so as to stay on throughout the H modes. The best shot was 971217013. On that shot we had two longish ELMfree periods. We reached 0.19 MJ (for the first time in a while.), and nebar went to 4.9 x 10^20 - a record I think for non-pellet shots. The radiated power rose, but not much faster than 960116024. Zeff67YAG doesn't show any increase. Hiter89 peaked at 2 then dropped to 1.6. They bad news is that there were many RF faults so we never had sustained high power. Details for "good" shots: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 971217002 Attempt at fiducial, but RF power only 0.5 MW just dithering - interesting for L/H threshold studies -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 971217004 Fiducial shot Only a 30 msec long H-mode however. We'll try again before starting the day's program -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 971217005 Fiducial shot Goes into H-mode only at 2 MW Looks like EDA but with some type 3 ELMs H-mode lasts past the end of the RF pulse for 150 msec into OH H factor at only about 1.3 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 971217006 Fiducial Goes into H-mode during 1 MW phase H reaches ~1.6, Prad ~ 0.6 MW about as good as yesterday start dimensionless scaling program on next shot -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 971217007 Good shot shape matches target fairly well Ip = 1.2 MA nebar = 2e20 Prf = 1MW, 2MW No H-mode however ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 971217010 Good shot shape matches target fairly well needs slightly bigger gaps Ip = 1.2 MA nebar = 2e20 Prf = 1.3MW, 2.2MW Prad, Zeff both low Still no H-mode -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 971217013 Good shot shape matches target fairly well needs slightly bigger gaps Bt = 5.33 Ip = 1.2 MA nebar = 2e20 target nebar = 4.9e20 in H-mode Prf = 1.4MW, 2.7MW 2 Longish ELMfree H-mode periods, but major RF faults H factor reaches just to 2 before RF drops out Prad -> 2MW -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 971217017 Good shot Ip = 1.2 MA target nebar = 1.5e20 hmode nebar = 3.6e20 Prf = 1.2MW, 2.5MW Two ELM free periods RF faults right after switch to 2.5 MW -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 971217021 Disruption just after 1 second one RF transmitter only Ip = 1.2 MA target nebar = 1.5e20 Prf = 1.2MW -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 971217030 Fiducial Nice Shot, one long H-mode W -> 0.12 MJ H -> 1.6 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 971217031 Fiducial Nice Shot, one long H-mode W -> 0.12 MJ H -> 1.6 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 971217032 Ohmic Fiducial -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 971217033 Fiducial Nice Shot, one long H-mode W -> 0.12 MJ H -> 1.6 |

| Physop Summary for 971217 MP 161 Dimensionless Similarity (JET) SL: [g] PO: wolfe EO: silva/bertolino/cochran This was the second try this week at getting the JET similarity run. We got more done today than yesterday (when the JET shot was never even loaded) but we still don't have the data. We abandoned the effort today after a halo current "OUT" on shot #24, I_halo>250ka (just over the line). While we were trying we got some nice 1.2MA shots in essentially the JET shape, including an ELM-free H-mode shot that reached 185 kJ (shot #13), this year's best so far. Only ELM-free h-modes were obtained. The threshold was between 1.5 and 2MW, but we had difficulting getting the RF levels adjusted to get a better value. We were in an alternating plasma/fizzle cycle or worse for most of the day at 1.2MA, so the data rate was poor. Recovery from these shots seemed to take more fizzles than for the fiducials. The initial target plasma was based on 960904035, with some minor tweaks, the main one being to extend the TF longer after start of rampdown. These ran beautifully, ramping down to around 200kA or less. We got into disruption trouble later, after dropping the density and trying to tweak the elongation up to get an even better match and getting vertical instabilities; these may have been due to the shape or to deteriorating wall conditions. The RF load feedback was turned on at shot 20, and didn't help the RF much but may have aggravated the stability and Mo problems. I can't blame it for all the disruptions though, since some happened before the RF pulse. I recommend continuation of this experiment starting from shot 971217013, which had ZXU moved up to make it less double null. It might be a good idea to tweak the current to move away from q=3.0, especially if increased gaps or higher elongation is really required. After the "out" we went back to fiducials, which did show signs of poor conditioning for a few shots, then seemed to get better, giving long EDA's in the 1MW phase. Some of the fiducials were disruptive, with injections (bricks) particularly near crossover. All day we were observing lots of antenna heating and projectiles on the fast camera. The top of both antennas, worse on D, glowed brightly incandescent during the high power RF, and continued glowing after the shot. While the EFITs indicated no reason for a strong plasma interaction at the top of the antenna, I tried running a fiducial-like shot with the ZCUR shifted down; this showed essentially the same effect. An ohmic shot with the same program did not exhibit the effect, but then the edge temps are much lower, so it doesn't prove much. The argon was not turned on all day until the last shot, when a comparison shot was made with 28msec @3psi. This killed the EDA for the duration of the 1MW step, but it did show up at 2MW. The shot with no Ar was EDA at 1MW as well. I recommend further testing to determine how much Ar is innocuous, starting at 14msec @3psi. I have now moved the new fiducial (971216032) into segment 4 of the current model (and all shots today after #7). This segment was used for the fiducial and fiducial-like shots (some had longer RF, still the same PCS program), between #25 and #30. Note that, contrary to Martin's logbook entry, shots #31-33 had a lower ZCUR and were run from segment 2, not the fiducial in segment 4. Segment 4 has the title "1997 fiducial (960904032)" and that's what it is. It should not be modified without changing the title. Engineering setup: ------------------ NO ECDC. None overnight and none before the run. Supply setup from 971212036. We'll need to check the reverse swing limits on this. TF under hybrid control K-side with 30PSI deuterium and enable B-top with 6psi Deuterium and enable B-side lower with 3psi Argon; don't enable for first shot. Gate valves: ECE (if vacuum ok) Run Plan -------- Take 1 fiducial (like 971216), for reference. Load segment 2 from 960904035 (and update predictors). This is a 1.2MA shot. We probably will need to do some work on the rampdown. Try to get a good match to JET equilibrium (960904035 was pretty good). Set up a two step RF pulse, with a low power (~1MW) for 150 msec, followed by as high as we can reliably get. Scan RF power in first step (shot to shot) to get a threshold point. Try for full power (target 3.5 MW total power) in the second step and scan power around that for transport comparison. If time permits, raise field to 6.4T, Ip to 1.45MA and repeat, at least for confinement scaling. Results: -------- We got a rough bracketing on the threshold at 1.2MA, but didn't get the high power in reliably. Shot 13 was the best, and it had too high a final density. ELM-free h-modes were obtained at 1.2MA in the JET shape. EDA h-modes were obtained in fiducials at the beginning and end of the run. The fiducial segment is now in segment 4 of todays shots after shot #7. Startup reliability continued poor, especially after 1.2MA shots. Problems: --------- There was an apparent leak present all day. 28 peak was on the 7 scale. Coarse argon leak checking indicated it is in the vicinity of the pump stack and/or RGA, but could not be localized quickly. The RGA pump-out was bagged in argon, but is probably not the culprit. Leak is stil there and should be investigated tomorrow. Computer was in a bad state at the start of the day. Couldn't start the cycle or get shots from the Jukebox. Josh fixed things up in time for a 9AM start. Problem was apparently a holdover from yesterday's network hang; some servers didn't get stopped or started successfully. Shot 1 was data system only to be sure all was fixed. Josh has been asked to get in early tomorrow for early run-start. At the start of the run the EF1L supply had its offset problem again. This fixed itself after Vinnie and Bill started putting probes on the board (shot 8). On shot 3 the OH1 supply had a noise problem that looked a lot like the TF cabinet 1 problem. Caused some perturbations on the oh1 current in pre-charge and may have led to the fizzle. The problem did not recur. Details: -------- Shot 1: data system test only - looks ok. Shot 2: Fire off a "fiducial" (as on 971216032) Ok - got plasma RF only gave us .5MW. Misunderstanding. Try again for next shot (if we get it) Meanwhile start updating predictors for the JET shot. Shot 3: Another fiducial, this time RF set for normal fiducial. fizzle. OH1 output voltage has big spikes. Also EF1L is doing its offset thing again. null looks horrible. Probably OH1 error. OH1 supply current trace looks like the TF cab 1 problem. It may be tickling the REVERSE current limit, and affecting the voltage even though we're on hybrid current control. PCS setup for the JET shot. Note that I had to lower the CLEARIN factor to make it fit; RXL changed factor to 5e-5 RXU changed factor to 2.5e-5 Others left default values. Shot 4: Repeat, see if the OH1 fixes itself plasma. RF pulse looks right, but no H-modes, even on the 2MW pulse. OH1 looks ok this time. Still an offset on EF1L. We'll try another fiducial for shot 5 Shot 5: repeat plasma - H-mode on second RF pulse, not on first. EDA while RF is on, then ELM-free to 1.15sec (RF off at 2MW) We're still not back to yesterday's conditions, since we aren't in H-mode at 1MW. Keep running fiducials until we are, or get too bored. Shot 6: repeat H-mode during the 1MW pulse. Looks EDA. Has 100msec lag from RF on to L-H transition, then a 28msec lag to EDA. Startup is nicer this time. Go to JET shape, 1.2MA for next shot. Shot 7: Go to JET shape, 1.2MA Extend TF pulse to 1.35sec (power supply inverts at 1.4) Copy PG3 from fiducial. Also copy PG1 pulse (Ar) byt leave it off. plasma, looks like it ramped down! All the way down to 200kA, at 1.68sec No H-mode, got both RF pulses (1MW and 2MW) Shape isn't terrible, a little too close to double null. burst of vertical instability between .57 and .67 Shot 8: CLEARIN from -.001 to 0. fizzle. EF1L worked correctly this time. Vinnie put a probe in the right place? Late breakdown, BR a bit positive. Sparker looks like it arced just before 0. Just try again, but I may need to make a br tweak Shot 9: Repeat, CLEARIN from -.001 to 0. another fizzle. May need a tweak Still a late breakdown. Tweak Br. Shot 10: Br from .007 -> .0065 CLEARIN from -.001 to 0. plasma - ramps down ok. No sign of an H-mode. Still nearly DN. Try increasing ZXU Shot 11: ZXU from .035 to .045 Note: on shot 10 Br was a bit negative, but the startup was on time and smooth. Leave it. fizzle. bd time is ok, br looks good. Probably a waiting game. Shot 12: drop pre-puff to 12 msec (from 13) ZXU from .035 to .045 another fizzle. Breakdown a litle later (6.0 instead of 5.7) Too much Bz? Shot 13: EF4 from -1335 -> -1345 drop pre-puff to 12 msec (from 13) ZXU from .035 to .045 plasma - 2 ELM-free H-modes, just after 2nd step in RF density is too high, reaches 5e20/m3 during H-mode less of a DN, Martin thinks the gap is still too small. Stored energy around 185kJ For next shot, reduce density, increase CLEARIN Shot 14: NL4 from 1.2-> 1.0 CLearin 0.0 -> 0.002 fizzle. What else is new? Shot 15: repeat ("Be patient"-J. Goetz) NL4 from 1.2-> 1.0 CLearin 0.0 -> 0.002 Disruption at .618. It went down. Halo strike > 200kA Something came in on the 2pi, plasma cools, then got a vertical problem Shot 16: leave CLEARIN at 0. to 0.6sec, then to .002 at .65 Still asking for 1.0 nl4 long delay while RF group changes a cooling fan. Fizzle. CII at .004 (started at .001) bd is a little late (6.8msec) Shot 17: repeat leave CLEARIN at 0. to 0.6sec, then to .002 at .65 Still asking for 1.0 nl4 plasma, full length. 2 h-modes, ELM free. density gets to 4e20 in second h-mode. 2nd RF drops out quickly. Only about 150kJ on this one. RF loading feedback on next shot. Shot 18: RF loading feedback on with gain =-1500 Early RF raised by 200kW to try to get h-mode on first step. Early disruption, .34 sec. Looks like a brick? Growing vertical oscillation from .268sec; it didn't make it past the early thrash. Shot 19: repeat RF loading feedback on with gain =-1500 fizzle. late bd, CII at .004. bz may be a little negative. Shot 20: repeat of 19 RF load feedback = -1500, early RF raised by 200kW to get threshold plasma, full length, 2 ELM-free h-modes 1st RF step only at 1.25 MW, no transition. Multiple RF faults soon after transition in second step. Rice reports extremely large Mo signal. WMHD about 150kJ. outer gap gets very small during RF feedback time. Shot 21: repeat Disruption at 1.02. Growing vertical instability. No h-mode. No d-port RF; only 1.1MW from E-port. mo bursts around crossover. Inner gap goes to zero. Shot 22: MOve RCUR out faster, get to .668 at .4sec (was .664). dud! Fields don't look bad. Try raising the fill a little. shot 21 shows hot spots on the antennas, although the gap is large. The density is low and it never went into H-mode. Shot 23: Raise pre-puff to 15msec (from 12) MOve RCUR out faster, get to .668 at .4sec (was .664). fizzle. CII at .005, with a spike to .008 bd still around 6.1msec, bz is a bit positive early. Shot 24: repeat Raise pre-puff to 15msec (from 12) MOve RCUR out faster, get to .668 at .4sec (was .664). disruption at .91. Halo out! 250kA halo current. Must Abort. H-mode at .77sec, after a long 2MW level Huge Moly influx during RF. Either the position is very different from what we think it is or we are getting a lot of RF generated Mo from the divertor nose. Some combination of the RF load feedback and the CLEARIN we are running seems to be giving us a vertical instabilty that wasn't there earlier. Back to fiducial shots. Shot 25: Turn off segment 2 and turn on segment 4 (fiducial) plasma . full length. Two Elm-free h-modes, maybe EDA late in second one. early sharkfin. RF a little ragged, but both levels are there. Go again, extend 2nd RF pulse. Shot 26: repeat, with 2nd level RF out to 1.2sec plasma One long EDA h-mode. Something happens at 1.1, Prad goes up to 1.5MW from < 1 with constant 2.2 of RF; density goes up a little. Is it detaching the divertor? Camera still showing lots of heating at top of antennas. EFIT doesn't look like it should be interacting there. Shot 27: repeat. disruption at .5 sec. No sign of a vertical problem. Looks like a brick. Amanda and Gary Taylor want to switch over to the PPPL 19 channel ECE diagnostic. We will have a delay of about 20 minutes while they do. Then we'll go back to fiducials, and if time permits, change the plasma height to see if the antenna hot spots go away. I don't think we'll go back to the JET shape today. Shot 28: repeat. Another early disruption. at crossover (.4sec) I think it touched somewhere. Maybe left gap close to 0? Shot 29: repeat once more. The programming hasn't changed. fizzle. late bd, CII at .0035, Br is positive again. Shot 30: Br from .0065 to .006 plasma . Nice long EDA. Still has an injection near crossover. Get ready to move the plasma down.to check on the antenna light Shot 31: Import seg2 from seg4, relable and lower zcur to -.02 from -.015 (seg2 on, seg 4 off) plasma. Another nice long EDA. Antenna lights up as much as previous, also has some ejecta. Next shot no RF. Shot 32: repeat with no RF. plasma. Antenna light mostly gone. One more with Argon. Shot 33: repeat of 31, with 28 msec of Ar enabled. Long h-mode, but ELM free until 2nd step, then EDA and maybe a toggle. 2pi signal is about 50% higher before RF, maybe a factor of 2 in the 1MW step. Apparently 28msec at 3psi is still too much. Suggest trying 14msec@3psi on a future test. Scorecard: ---------- 33 shots. 21 plasmas. 10 fizzles. 1 dud 1 test |

| Dec 17 1997 07:22:52:620AM | Steve Wolfe | We seem to have a leak. 28 peak is on the 7 scale. Ar is flowing at F-port, and the pump is on B-bottom gate valve. Set up PCS and hope for the best. Load From 971216032 Load into model Import seg 4 from seg 2; rename the segment "1997 fiducial (971216032)" Import seg 2 from 960904035 seg 2 : I'll need to rebuild predictors for BP12 and touch V-screen for PG5 It hangs at call algorithm; probably can't retrieve the reference shot. I tried to retrieve it (930817004) from IDL and it hung there too. Have to wait for TWF to come in. | |
| Dec 17 1997 07:52:55:130AM | Steve Wolfe | Try doing a coldstart, see if that link is broken too HYBINIT_DISPATCH ran. bitbus log shows ok. Hloader server ok. We are having computer problems. Several people report unable to do test shots, or get scopes to update. It looks to me like the data cycle didn't complete for 971216032 yesterday. I have no Mout data on the compare-volts scope. Frank is chasing the leak. Seems to be on the turbo stack. | |
| Dec 17 1997 09:04:08:460AM | Steve Wolfe | Tom still hasn't gotten in. I've blown away PCS and my IDL session. Bring PCS back up and redo the import, but not the call algs. Import seg 4 from 2, rename to "1997 fiducial (971216032)" Import seg 2 from 960904035 Accidentally did 960904032, and it hung again $%)**+*+* ctrl c out and try again. Import seg 4 from 2, rename to "1997 fiducial (971216032)" Import seg 2 from 960904035 touch V-screen rename segment to "1.2MA JET shape" Tom and Josh seem to have fixed things now. First shot will be data system only. | |
| Dec 17 1997 09:10:09:240AM | 971217001 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 1: data system test only - looks ok. |
| Dec 17 1997 09:17:09:280AM | 971217002 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 2: Fire off a "fiducial" (as on 971216032) Ok - got plasma Meanwhile start updating predictors for the JET shot. |
| Dec 17 1997 09:20:29:450AM | 971217002 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 2: Fire off a "fiducial" (as on 971216032) Ok - got plasma RF only gave us .5MW. Misunderstanding. Try again for next shot (if we get it) Meanwhile start updating predictors for the JET shot. |
| Dec 17 1997 09:26:32:000AM | 971217002 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 2: Fire off a "fiducial" (as on 971216032) Ok - got plasma RF only gave us .5MW. Misunderstanding. Try again for next shot (if we get it) Meanwhile start updating predictors for the JET shot. |
| Dec 17 1997 09:41:13:550AM | 971217003 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 3: Another fiducial, this time RF set for normal fiducial. I have the PCS setup for the JET shot. Note that I had to lower the CLEARIN factor to make it fit; RXL changed factor to 5e-5 RXU changed factor to 2.5e-5 Others left default values. |
| Dec 17 1997 09:53:54:550AM | 971217004 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 4: Repeat, see if the OH1 fixes itself plasma. RF pulse looks right, but no H-modes, even on the 2MW pulse. OH1 looks ok this time. Still an offset on EF1L. We'll try another fiducial for shot 5 |
| Dec 17 1997 10:08:52:650AM | 971217005 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 5: repeat plasma - H-mode on second RF pulse, not on first. EDA while RF is on, then ELM-free to 1.15sec (RF off at 2MW) We're still not back to yesterday's conditions, since we aren't in H-mode at 1MW. Keep running fiducials until we are, or get too bored. |
| Dec 17 1997 10:11:13:600AM | 971217005 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 5: repeat plasma - H-mode on second RF pulse, not on first. EDA while RF is on, then ELM-free to 1.15sec (RF off at 2MW) breakdown is dicey. Now BR is too positive. Long hesitation, and it hits something. We're still not back to yesterday's conditions, since we aren't in H-mode at 1MW. Keep running fiducials until we are, or get too bored. |
| Dec 17 1997 10:24:47:330AM | 971217006 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 6: repeat H-mode during the 1MW pulse. Looks EDA. Has 100msec lag from RF on to L-H transition, then a 28msec lag to EDA. Startup is nicer this time. Go to JET shape, 1.2MA for next shot. |
| Dec 17 1997 10:46:28:550AM | 971217007 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 7: Go to JET shape, 1.2MA Extend TF pulse to 1.35sec (power supply inverts at 1.4) Copy PG3 from fiducial. Also copy PG1 pulse (Ar) byt leave it off. plasma, looks like it ramped down! All the way down to 200kA, at 1.68sec No H-mode, got both RF pulses (1MW and 2MW) Shape isn't terrible, a little too close to double null. burst of vertical instability between .57 and .67 |
| Dec 17 1997 11:06:42:880AM | 971217008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 8: CLEARIN from -.001 to 0. fizzle. EF1L worked correctly this time. Vinnie put a probe in the right place? Late breakdown, BR a bit positive. Sparker looks like it arced just before 0. Just try again, but I may need to make a br tweak |
| Dec 17 1997 11:13:38:400AM | 971217009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 9: Repeat, CLEARIN from -.001 to 0. another fizzle. May need a tweak Still a late breakdown. Tweak Br. |
| Dec 17 1997 11:23:42:460AM | 971217010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 10: Br from .007 -> .0065 CLEARIN from -.001 to 0. plasma - ramps down ok. No sign of an H-mode. Still nearly DN. Try increasing ZXU |
| Dec 17 1997 11:34:22:470AM | 971217011 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 11: ZXU from .035 to .045 Note: on shot 10 Br was a bit negative, but the startup was on time and smooth. Leave it. fizzle. bd time is ok, br looks good. Probably a waiting game. |
| Dec 17 1997 11:46:29:110AM | 971217012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 12: drop pre-puff to 12 msec (from 13) ZXU from .035 to .045 another fizzle. Breakdown a litle later (6.0 instead of 5.7) Too much Bz? |
| Dec 17 1997 12:03:02:620PM | 971217013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 13: EF4 from -1335 -> -1345 drop pre-puff to 12 msec (from 13) ZXU from .035 to .045 plasma - 2 ELM-free H-modes, just after 2nd step in RF density is too high, reaches 5e20/m3 during H-mode less of a DN, Martin thinks the gap is still too small. Stored energy around 185kJ For next shot, reduce density, increase CLEARIN |
| Dec 17 1997 12:10:57:640PM | 971217014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 14: NL4 from 1.2-> 1.0 CLearin 0.0 -> 0.002 fizzle. What else is new? |
| Dec 17 1997 12:26:29:210PM | 971217015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 15: repeat ("Be patient"-J. Goetz) NL4 from 1.2-> 1.0 CLearin 0.0 -> 0.002 Disruption at .618. It went down. Halo strike > 200kA Something came in on the 2pi, plasma cools, then got a vertical problem |
| Dec 17 1997 01:07:05:650PM | 971217016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 16: leave CLEARIN at 0. to 0.6sec, then to .002 at .65 Still asking for 1.0 nl4 long delay while RF group changes a cooling fan. Fizzle. CII at .004 (started at .001) bd is a little late (6.8msec) |
| Dec 17 1997 01:19:13:930PM | 971217017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 17: repeat leave CLEARIN at 0. to 0.6sec, then to .002 at .65 Still asking for 1.0 nl4 plasma, full length. 2 h-modes, ELM free. density gets to 4e20 in second h-mode. 2nd RF drops out quickly. Only about 150kJ on this one. RF loading feedback on next shot. |
| Dec 17 1997 01:44:45:010PM | 971217018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 18: RF loading feedback on with gain =-1500 Early RF raised by 200kW to try to get h-mode on first step. Early disruption, .34 sec. Looks like a brick? Growing vertical oscillation from .268sec; it didn't make it past the early thrash. |
| Dec 17 1997 01:44:56:660PM | 971217019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 19: repeat RF loading feedback on with gain =-1500 Early RF raised by 200kW to try to get h-mode on first step. fizzle. late bd, CII at .004. bz may be a little negative. |
| Dec 17 1997 06:15:43:020PM | 971217020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 20: repeat of 19 RF load feedback = -1500, early RF raised by 200kW to get threshold plasma, full length, 2 ELM-free h-modes 1st RF step only at 1.25 MW, no transition. Multiple RF faults soon after transition in second step. Rice reports extremely large Mo signal. WMHD about 150kJ. outer gap gets very small during RF feedback time. |
| Dec 17 1997 02:33:36:260PM | 971217021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 21: repeat Disruption at 1.02. Growing vertical instability. No h-mode. No d-port RF; only 1.1MW from E-port. mo bursts around crossover. Inner gap goes to zero. |
| Dec 17 1997 02:51:00:410PM | 971217022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 22: MOve RCUR out faster, get to .668 at .4sec (was .664). dud! Fields don't look bad. Try raising the fill a little. shot 21 shows hot spots on the antennas, although the gap is large. The density is low and it never went into H-mode. |
| Dec 17 1997 03:01:17:770PM | 971217023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 23: Raise pre-puff to 15msec (from 12) MOve RCUR out faster, get to .668 at .4sec (was .664). fizzle. CII at .005, with a spike to .008 bd still around 6.1msec, bz is a bit positive early. |
| Dec 17 1997 03:16:08:600PM | 971217024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 24: repeat Raise pre-puff to 15msec (from 12) MOve RCUR out faster, get to .668 at .4sec (was .664). disruption at .91. Halo out! 250kA halo current. |
| Dec 17 1997 03:27:22:180PM | 971217025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 25: Turn off segment 2 and turn on segment 4 (fiducial) plasma . full length. Two Elm-free h-modes, maybe EDA late in second one. early sharkfin. RF a little ragged, but both levels are there. Go again, extend 2nd RF pulse. |
| Dec 17 1997 03:44:50:430PM | 971217026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 26: repeat, with 2nd level RF out to 1.2sec plasma One long EDA h-mode. Something happens at 1.1, Prad goes up to 1.5MW from < 1 with constant 2.2 of RF; density goes up a little. Is it detaching the divertor? Camera still showing lots of heating at top of antennas. EFIT doesn't look like it should be interacting there. |
| Dec 17 1997 04:00:16:020PM | 971217027 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 27: repeat. disruption at .5 sec. |
| Dec 17 1997 04:21:59:630PM | 971217028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 28: repeat. Another early disruption. at crossover (.4sec) I think it touched somewhere. Maybe left gap close to 0? |
| Dec 17 1997 04:29:29:520PM | 971217029 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 29: repeat once more. The programming hasn't changed. fizzle. late bd, CII at .0035, Br is positive again. |
| Dec 17 1997 04:40:41:210PM | 971217030 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 30: Br from .0065 to .006 plasma . Nice long EDA. Still has an injection near crossover. Get ready to move the plasma down.to check on the antenna light |
| Dec 17 1997 04:54:36:830PM | 971217031 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 31: Import seg2 from seg4, relable and lower zcur to -.02 from -.015 (seg2 on, seg 4 off) plasma. Another nice long EDA. Antenna lights up as much as previous, also has some ejecta. Next shot no RF. |
| Dec 17 1997 05:05:57:510PM | 971217032 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 32: repeat with no RF. plasma. Antenna light mostly gone. One more with Argon. |
| Dec 17 1997 05:38:27:000PM | 971217033 | Steve Wolfe | Shot 33: repeat of 31, with 28 msec of Ar enabled. |
