The purpose of this part of the run was to evaluate the boronization carried
out on Friday night and do the magic wall conditioning usually required after
a fresh boronization. The plan was to start with fiducial shots (800kA, RF in
two steps at 1MW and 2MW.) and then to take a few 1MA shots for a more direct
comparison with the previous weeks' results. This was accomplished.

A fresh boronization was carried out over the weekend. 137 psi of diborane was
used, for an average coverage of about 2000 Angstroms. This boronization
processed the most diborane ever used during a single C-Mod boronization. In
addition, we scanned the ECDC resonance out past the Faraday shield midplane
location to just behind the current strap. Previous boronizations during this
run campaign have been limited to just up to the Faraday shield.

Breakdown was extremely problematic at the start of the day. Ian made
substantial changes to the startup segment, including tweaks to OH1, OH2, EF1,
and EF3 voltages, as well as RCUR offset, IC_EF4 and Br0. The first non-fizzle
was shot 17, at about 11:45AM. The new startup has a rather slow initial
current rise, but seemed quite robust once we got going.

NOTE: The ratiomatic response has apparently changed. We got about a factor of
two lower pressure on the f-side ratiomatic for the standard pre-puff. John
Goetz confirmed that the ratio of the divertor RGA signal to the ratiomatic on
a fizzle was different today from 980116037.

Shots 17 and 21-25 were 800kA fiducials with no Argon. The L-H transition
moved from 1sec on shot 17 to earlier and earlier in the 1MW step. All shots
got into EDA shortly after the LH transition. The 2MW step of the 800kA shots
peaked out at 115-120kJ Wmhd. Except for injections, the 2pi on these shots
was typically 200kW, and the main bolo around 600kW.

On shot 26, and thereafter, the Argon pulse was enabled, (20msec @1psi) and
the 2pi increased by about 100kW. The L-H was delayed and the EDA didn't come
on until .94sec. The Mo signal (ch 2 of the Moly-monitor) went from 7.6e13 on
shot 25 to 1.2e14 on shot 26. The stored energy was not significantly affected
at 114kJ.

Shots 27-28 were at 1MA, with everything else nominally the same. Argon was
left on. The 1MA shots did not go into H-mode until the second RF step,
perhaps indicating a current dependence on Pthresh. Shot 27 got to stored
energy of 160kJ, which is very similar to 1MA shots of the previous two
weeks. Shot 28 had a large injection, up to 1.6e15 on the Mo monitor, and
raised the bolometer Prad to 1.5MW and cooled the plasma noticeably. Wmhd only
reached 150kJ on this shot.

Moly levels, aside from injections, seem down from last week. However, the
stored energy and confinement seem quite similar, and lower than in 1996.

After shot 28, the run was turned over to Bob Granetz for MP#173B,
inside/outside fueling.

Run summary for 980120_B

MP 173B -- Compare high-field side and low-field side gas fueling

Summary: We gas puffed deuterium into a limited plasma from both the high-field
side and the low-field side, and even though the quality of the data is not
great, we can conclude that gas fueling into the high-field side does NOT show
any enhanced fueling efficiency compared to the low-field side. The actual
density rises were rather miniscule, and the absolute fueling efficiencies may
be affected by marfe activity, but the comparative null result is clear. Shots
to look at are 32 (inboard w/o puff), 34 & 35 (inboard w/puff), 37 (outboard
w/o puff), 40 & 42 (outboard w/puff). No deleterious effects of running on the
outboard limiter for 0.4 s were noticed.

This half-day run is beginning at 14:05, with 980120029 as the first shot. It
will be an 0.8 MA, 5.3 T, ohmic shot, limited on the inboard wall from t=0.7 to
1.2 s. We'd like to get an elongation of 1.45, but don't know how to set that
up a priori, so let's see what we get on the first shot and adjust from there.

The lower divertor NINJA has been filled to approximately 35 psi of D2. (It
is used for both the inboard midplane capillary and the outboard midplane (A-B
limiter) capillary.

Shot 29 -- Fizzle.

Shot 30 -- Plasma. Just barely limited from t=0.8 to 1.3 s. Kappa=1.55.
Next shot: push up farther against the inboard limiter. This should
also reduce the elongation.

Shot 31 -- Fizzle.

Shot 32 -- Plasma. Good inboard-limited plasma. Kappa=1.3. Density flattops
at nl04=1.4e20 m-2 by t=0.95 s. Gas valve is off during the limited
portion of the discharge.

Next shot: fire inboard midplane NINJA valve (B16-001) from t=0.95
to 1.05 s.

Shot 33 -- Fizzle.

Shot 34 -- Plasma. Good inboard-limiter plasma with inboard NINJA puffing.
Density rise is noticeable starting around t=1.05 s. Total plasma
particles increase by only 0.13e20. Brian says that he is injecting
a total of 21 torr-litres of D2, which corresponds to about 15e20
atoms. Initial injection rate is about 105e20 atoms per second;
initial plasma particle rise is approx 2e20 ions/s. JT reports that
the marfe Te is 1.1 ev (determined from slope of radiative
recombination continuum of neutral deuterium).

Next shot: repeat with no changes.

Shot 35 -- Plasma. Another good inboard-limiter, inboard fueling shot.
Very similar results.

Next shot: same, except no NINJA puffing, to get a 2nd background
shot.

Shot 36 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: run an outboard-limited plasma. No NINJA puffing.

Shot 37 -- Plasma. Good outboard-limited plasma. There apparently was still
a marfe, with accompanying density increase, just like there was on
the previous inboard-limited shots. Inner gap is 1 cm. Kappa=1.4.

Next shot: puff from the NINJA A-B outboard midplane capillary
(A33-001). No puff from the inboard capillary.

Shot 38 -- Fizzle.

Shot 39 -- Fizzle.

Shot 40 -- Plasma. Good outboard-limited plasma with outboard puffing.
Density starts increasing at t=1.05 s (same as inboard cases) at
the same rate of rise as the inboard case. However, the total
number of particles continues rising, eventually reaching about 3
times more increase on this shot than on the inboard shots (035).

Next shot: repeat, again with outboard puffing.

Shot 41 -- Fizzle.

Shot 42 -- Plasma. Good outboard-limited plasma with outboard puffing. Very
similar to previous shot (040).

Next shot: repeat, with no puffing.

Shot 43 -- Plasma. Good outboard-limited shot with no NINJA puffing.
Unfortunately, nl04 digitiser failed.

End of run. Later this evening, Brian will run a couple of gas calibration
shots to absolutely calibrate the inboard and outboard NINJA injections.

Hi Bob,

I've analyzed the gas puff tests 2082 (AB limiter) and 2083 (inner wall).

The peak flow rates are approx 75 Torr l /s and 93 Torr l /s, respectively.

Somewhat higher for the inner wall. We didn't do enough tests
to see how reproducible the ninja system is, but my feeling
is that this difference is real, and probably reflects the different
length capillaries and/or some pinch of the capillaries somewhere.

Got plasmas back but not with perfect reliability.
Demonstrated the null hypothesis for inboard outboard ninja fueling.

Physop Stuff

Started up with a long series of fizzles. Then eventually slowed the
Bz ramp rate a lot and finally got a series of 8 plasmas. Then things
reverted to alternating fizzles. The Bz was irreproducible at the 2mT
level. Current rise was generally very slow, and sometimes the
breakdown time was variable. Tweaked at improving the mflux shape.
Need to increase the EF1 commutation resistors to go where I really
wanted to.

Ratiomatic was giving pressures about a factor of 2 lower than before
for the same gas puff. We believe its calibration has changed but this
is not 100% certain. Densities in the first 30ms were very high, over
1e19 in many cases, versus typically 0.5 previously.

Plasmas had very low Mo and radiation in fiducials, but not
particularly spectacular confinement. Still it is clear that this
boronization was very effective in removing Mo at 2MW of RF.
It took only about 5 plasmas to cycle into a more or less steady
state.

No disruptions today. Sorry Bob!

1.2 s. We'd like to get an elongation of 1.45, but don't know how to set that
up a priori, so let's see what we get on the first shot and adjust from there.

The lower divertor NINJA has been filled to approximately 35 psi of D2. (It
is used for both the inboard midplane capillary and the outboard midplane (A-B
limiter) capillary.
